Principal’s Message : May 2020

These past few months have been unlike anything that most of us have ever experienced before. I want to thank all the teachers, students, administration, and parents for their cooperation, support, and hard work during this unprece-dented time. On March 15, we ushered in the Virtual Learning Era to Washington Park School with online learning from daily OneNote assignments, to “Zoom” clas-ses, to Flip Grid. Many of the teachers and students have been working very hard to complete all assignments on time, and I applaud all you for your ef-forts. I look forward to being able to put this behind us and begin a fresh new year in September. I truly miss all my students and wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe sum-mer.

CORONA-CATION

By- Catherine Snell

As the going gets tough, the students at Washington

Park School get tougher as they continue to attend school virtual-

ly. In the midst of a pandemic, schools around the country and

world have been closed. After seven weeks of learning online,

uncertain as to whether schools will open again, New Jersey has

been informed that they will not be returning to school. Learning on line has its advantages and disadvantages, but most students miss the face to face interaction

and socialization with teachers and peers. Sure, every student is missing out of the rest of the year, but what about our eighth grade students and high school

seniors especially?

Since school was halted in March, the eighth-grade class at WPS was stripped of many opportunities. The Washington, D.C. trip as well as the eighth

grade formal was cancelled. They were the highlights of the final year at Washington Park School. The Eighth Grade Science Fair will be presented on a Zoom

call, and the school wide Art Show will also be presented in another format. High school seniors were stripped of their proms, project graduation, etc.

The WPS spring play, which would have been Frozen this year, has been cancelled. Students in the lower grades will have other shows to put on, but

eighth grade students, some of whom had lead roles, will not have another opportunity to perform in at Washington Park School. Hopefully, this is only a minor

setback, and they will continue to participate in theater throughout high school.

Youth Week, the day the eighth grade students have been preparing for since November, will not proceed as planned this year. The students who won

town and board of education positions in the general election usually spend the day learning about Totowa and how it operates. However, there is a possibility

that the program Zoom will be used for some sort of program for the day.

Graduating students across the country, whether elementary or high school, have been robbed of their last few months together as a grade. The 2020

commencement exercises in all schools will not be the same as in the past.

Although it is upsetting that eighth-grade students will not be having the rest of their eighth-grade year as they had planned, they can always look on

the bright side; they will have everything they missed out on this year at some point in high school. For example, prom and high school graduation will take

place. Hopefully, schools across the United States will return to normal in September, and all students across the country will get to experience some of the

things they missed this spring with the shut down.

Stay safe and healthy everyone.

FOURTH GRADE CELEBRATES

DIFFERENT CULTURES

By:Peter Ghaly

Gianna Goow

Catherine Snell

Once again, Washington Park School

hosted Nation’s Night, an event where the fourth grade

students celebrate their diverse cultures with singing and

food. Fourth grade students spent their class time researching different cultures and traditions for the last month or so. Students sang songs from around the globe,

including “Canoe Song,” which is Native American, “Kuwa Furaha,” which is East African, and “Gong Xi Gong Xi,” which is Chinese. Students brought in food

representing their country, which was eaten after the wonderful performance. Some of these foods included pierogis, baked apples, and baked ziti.

The wonderfully entertaining night began with students walking onstage and performing their first song which was in a foreign language. They ended

with “Back in the USA” to celebrate their return from their journey in music around the world. There was a short intermission where a video about Smile Train, a

charity to help perform surgeries on children with cleft lips, was presented. Parents were given a goal of reaching $1,000 for the children in need. Even students and

families of other grade levels can donate to smile train by visiting the website “www.smiletrain.org.”

Hopefully, this fourth-grade tradition will continue for many years to come in Washington Park School. Every year students volunteer and parents alike

enjoy listening to their children and peers sing songs showcasing their cultures and traditions.

A NIGHT TO

REMEMBER

On February 20, 2020, the Nineteenth Annual

Eighth Grade Fashion Show was held at the Brownstone in Paterson. A vote for the theme of the fashion show was held a short time before, and the theme of

“The Big Apple” was the winner. Students were fortunate enough to wear snazzy clothes from Macy’s, Robert’s Tuxedos, and numerous other clothes stores and

outlets.

Each male student selected a stylish tuxedo of their own choosing complete with pants, a tie, and shoes. Practically none of the tuxedos were the

same, which allowed for a lot of variety. The boys really looked very handsome. The girls did the same and looked beautiful. Each selected dresses or gowns

which suited them. The harder part for the girls was the accessory choices: jewelry, shoes, hair ornaments, etc. They were all on their own for that, and in the

end everyone looked amazing.

Previous to the big event, the models practiced several times on how to walk on the runway, but their poses on the runway that evening were com-

pletely of their own choosing. This provided much entertainment.

On the day of the fashion show, students were permitted to leave at 1:20

P.M. so they could get ready for the fashion show, making sure they would look

their best for the big premiere. Again, the girls had the harder part of getting their

hair, nails, and makeup precisely done.

Once the time came, everyone rocked it. Everyone looked fantastic!

IT’S AN AIR AFFAIR

By: Sabrina Amendola

Charles Johnson

In January, approximately twenty students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades tried out for

the girls’ traveling volleyball team. Only fourteen girls were chosen to make up the junior varsity and varsi-

ty teams. These teams’ members were interchangeable. The competition to make the teams was tough, and

the final teams were comprised of two sixth grade, seven seventh grade, and five eighth grade students. Mr.

Scully, WPS physical education teacher, coached the teams and made every player work hard, helping each

of them to improve.

The team practiced every day after school whenever there was access to the gym. In addition, there were also optional practices in the morning and many

came to get better. Both the junior varsity and varsity players practiced with much effort and competed in a great way. They were all fighting for their positions, as

there were only six girls on the court for junior varsity and varsity.

The teams competed against a few teams this year, but the record of the varsity team is the only one that is recorded. The varsity girls played against

Madison Middle School, Mendham Middle School, Heritage Middle School, and East Hanover Middle School with no wins. In particular, the varsity team did not

have any victories against Madison Middle School, but each game played against them was a close scoring game.

Following the regular season, the teams competed in a tournament. The varsity team lost its first tournament game to Heritage Middle School located in

Livingston, New Jersey causing it to be out of the tournament. The varsity team’s overall record was zero wins and six losses for the season, but the girls played

every game competitively. Even though the varsity team failed to win any games, the girls still formed friendships on and off the court.

This newspaper staff represents students from period 2 writing class during academic rotation. It reflects the journalism and process-writing skills that were taught during this time period, ending with this actual newspaper publication. Thank you to all WPS staff members who cooper-ated with the newspaper staff by giving of their time and interviews. The staff very much enjoyed their introduction to the world of jour-nalism.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, the Unplugged Concert was performed in Washington Park School’s gymnasium. The Glee Club, A Capella, and

Senior Band performed beautiful songs from popular artists such as, “Memories,” “Sorry,” and “Ocean Eyes.” One song, “Hallelujah,” was sung in a trio by

Mykhayla Lopez, Kayla Perricelli, and Hope Sullivan.

The amount of work that the groups exercised in the rehearsals for this concert was tremendous. The rehearsals were under the direction of Mr. Latka

and Mr. Carl, music teachers at WPS. In the end, it was well worth it, judging from the response of the crowd.

While listening to the performance, guests were offered snacks, provided by the PTO, of cookies, cheese and crackers, and fruit along with punch.

At the end of the evening, the students were very proud of themselves. The crowd was filled with euphoria after watching such a delightful perfor-

mance. It truly was such a rewarding experience that seemed to have left the audience wanting to watch it again!
