Sunday by Sunday edited by Michael E. Novak STOLEN THUNDER By the time the Gospels were written, James and John, sons of Zebedee (sons of thunder”) were revered leaders of the Christian community. It is a common device of the evangelists to place the failings of the early Christians on the shoulders of their leaders to illustrate a point about discipleship, and perhaps to comfort them with the fact that Jesus chose common, flawed humans to spread the Good News. It must have seemed doubly odd that these two, already honored and revered, were chastised by Jesus when they requested positions of honor. Jesus, as it were, stole their thunder, and in the Gospel he likewise steals the thunder of the others who get indignant at James and John. Todays readings from Isaiah and Hebrews, along with Jesus as portrayed in Mark, steal the thunder of the places of honor they had attained by reminding us that it is in the humility of service that we come to know the reign of God in our midst. SERVANT CHRIST, SERVANT CHURCH In Matthews Gospel, it is the mother of James and John who makes the request of Jesus (Mark omits this scene). It is only naturalfor mothers to want to see their sons get ahead in the world, just as it is for us as individuals to seek those positions of honor and power. But again it is the lesson of Jesus, along with the lessons of Isaiah and Hebrews, that reminds us that we need to examine constantly our only naturalways of living to make sure that we are living as Christ, the head of the church. When Isaiah writes of the Suffering Servant, it can be seen as a prophecy of Jesus; but it is also a prophecy of the ongoing presence of Jesus, the church. When the author of Hebrews writes of the weakness known by Christ the great High Priest, it is also about the need for weakness on the part of the Body of Christ, the church. In this way the scriptures today show all of us, the baptized, the church, how we must continue to be the Servant Christ for the life of the world. Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications. STOLEN THUNDER By the time the Gospels were written, James and John, sons of Zebedee (sons of “thunder”) were revered leaders of the Christian community. Today’s readings from Isaiah and Hebrews, along with Jesus as portrayed in Mark, steal the thunder of the places of honor they had attained by reminding us that it is in the humility of service that we come to know the reign of God in our midst.

SERVANT CHRIST, SERVANT CHURCH In Matthew’s Gospel, it is the mother of James and John who makes the request of Jesus (Mark omits this scene). It is “only natural” for mothers to want to see their sons “get ahead in the world,” just as it is for us as individuals to seek those positions of honor and power. But again it is the lesson of Jesus, along with the lessons of Isaiah and Hebrews, that reminds us that we need to examine constantly our “only natural” ways of living to make sure that we are living as Christ, the head of the church. Today is World Mission Sunday. We celebrate this day by remembering the revitalizing mission at the heart of our Christian faith—to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith ensures the work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity. Today we celebrate Catholic Daughters of the Americas Sunday. Consider joining the CDA and be a part of this wonderful gift from God. As a member you will work with other Catholic women who share like values and together share your talents and gifts. The current membership theme is “CDA: BOGO! Bring one; Gain one!” Our membership enriches our spiritual, social, and missionary life through our Circle of Love Program. Visit our website at www.catholicdaughters.org. and if you are interested in joining or have any questions please call Dorice Duchscherer at 776-6231. Members will be at the doors passing out CDA brochures after the Masses this weekend. There will be no Sunday School or Building the Domestic Church classes on October 21 due to the Teacher’s Convention school break. All are invited to join the peaceful and prayerful 40 Days-For-Life Prayer Vigil Wednesdays through October 31. We meet by the Guardian of Life Statue on the east side of the church from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Contact Kathy Heilman at 771-2710 with any questions. The 7-12th grade Religious Education students will have their first Early-Out of the 2018-2019 year Wednesday, October 24. In keeping with this year’s Religious Education theme of “Finding Jesus at Home” students will participate in service at the Haaland Estates to be “Jesus’ hands on earth.” The after school program will begin at 1:15 in the RHS commons area with an after school snack before walking to the Haaland Estates to participate in an “Arts for Life” project with residents or help with the fall clean-up of planters and courtyard work. The Early-Out will end with students returning to RHS for pick-up or practice. In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples: “Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all.” The St. Therese Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will be meeting Thursday, October 25 at 7:00 PM in Dorothy’s Room. An Hour of Eucharistic Adoration in Reparation for abuse in the church will be held on Friday, October 26 from 5:30 - 6:30 PM. All are encouraged to gather together to pray for the healing of abused victims, the cleansing of our church, sorrow for the sins committed and an end to the deceit and abuse. We all need to open our hearts to a deeper level of compassion and understanding; our Lord suffered and died for our sins, now we need to pray and sacrifice for His Church. Resources will be available at the front entrance of the church to use for this important time of reflection and prayer. Little Flower CYO: Parish Youth in 7-12th grades are welcome to join the Annual CYO Amazing Race Saturday, October 27 from 5-10 PM. Every year our teens Race through Rugby to collect items needed for a particular service. There are clues to find, with a “Ghoul” or two and a lot of laughs. This year we are working to serve by “Finding Jesus at Home.” Our teens will be racing for non-perishable food items for our local Pierce County Food Pantry. There will be supper and prizes for the team that collects the most food items and pumpkin carving after the race. Please support our CYO teens when they knock on your door, as they continue to actively strive to be “Christ’s Hands on Earth.” Parent permission slips and details have been sent home. Contact Rebecca Leier at 776-6388 with any questions. Pumpkins are needed for the Little Flower Teen Ministry. Please leave any donated pumpkins in the Religious Education Office before October 27th. 3rd Grade Parents: Family preparation for Confirmation will begin on October 28 with parent meeting 1 of 2. Parents of Confirmation students will meet at 9:30 in the large dining room. Please make plans to attend and to receive the materials needed to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation with your child. If you have questions call Rebecca Leier at 776-6388.

Treasures from Our Tradition As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.” Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. —Rev. Donuts & Dates! Join the students of Little Flower School for coffee, juice, and donuts in the small dining room following both Masses on Sunday, October 28. This will be a great opportunity for fellowship and to secure your dates for the "PRAY 365" calendar for 2019. Little Flower School PTO is seeking items for their annual Dine and Bid event scheduled for November 16 at the Rugby Eagles Club. We welcome any NEW items; crafts, gift baskets, sports team items, decorations, children's items, etc. Please consider joining our efforts to help make this our most successful auction yet! Be sure to check out our Facebook page; Little Flower Catholic School to see a listing of our auction items. If you would like your donation included on that list, please have donations to the school no later than October 26. Theresa's chicken will be served from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. The auction will be from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Thank you for contributing and supporting Little Flower School! Thank you for your generous support to the United States Catholic Church Relief Agencies 2018 Disaster Appeal last weekend. A total of $1253.55 (Little Flower $1172.55 and St. Mary $81.00) will be used to provide shelter, medical care and aid and long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts for the victims of natural disasters. October is Respect Life Month! Families are welcome to take home our “Respect Life” traveling tote. The tote contains a beautiful picture book about the world of the unborn and four touch-of-life fetal models depicting the four stages in an unborn baby’s development. The tote also contains our traveling Holy Family icon and other religious articles with suggestions for creating a sacred prayer space in the home. Prayers for the unborn and for families are also included. All parishioners are welcome to check out the “Respect Life” traveling tote and take it to their home for a week. It can be found in the Religious Education/Parish Library from October - January. For more information contact Sr. Jean Louise at 776-6258 or Rebecca Leier 776-6388.
