Joe Mallia In the readings today we again here that famous verse about taking up your cross and following Jesus. The initial reaction is to see serving Jesus and ministry as a whole, as a burden. But before we jump to that initial reaction, think for a moment about the cross. The cross because of Jesus, is not a burden but a sign of victory and love. So, if we then think about Jesus telling us to take up our symbol of victory and love and follow him and serve others, then it is not such a bad thing. In fact, Jesus is telling us what is necessary to make ministry possible. Our lives of service to God and others should never be seen as a burden. It may be challenging, but it is never a burden. In our first reading, the challenge faced by the woman in the story seemed like a burden, until she was encouraged to do it in faith. The result was that the situation worked out better than she planned. It was not anything she did, but her approach to the situation was filled with faith and courage. She was promised that all would work out and it did and so it can be for us. Our problem is that we view our lives filled with insurmountable challenges. We see everything as if we are being burdened and inconvenienced. The result is that we react that way. We never approach things with joy, but an exhaling of air in exasperation. Can you hear yourself saying, "not one more thing". When Constantine was given a vision, he was shown a cross and told, "by this sign you will conquer"; and he did. It is by the same sign that you too will conquer over every challenge you face in your life. Pick up your sign of victory and love and head into the day. With this sign, you can overcome problems in personal and work relationships. You can overcome money issues and you can overcome fear or addiction issues. We need to pick up our cross to find the strength we need to bring light to the darkness of the world and to provide hope to the hopeless. We simply can't be good ministers and servants of the Gospel unless we take up the cross, the sign of victory and love. Have a great week and God bless. Festival Time: Just a reminder, that there are a lot of blank spaces on the volunteer sheets in the back of church. Please don't make me beg! You are needed and any amount of time will be a real help, so take a moment and sign up. Further, plan on attending the festival and invite your family and friends, neighbors and co -workers to come to the festival to enjoy the good music, good fun and good people here at our parishes. Both festival committees have planned great weekends of entertainment for all ages and you will really be missing out if you do not show up this year. Tickets are available for the dinner/auction on Saturday for the Holy Family festival. Please stop by the office to purchase your tickets. Please return your purchased or sold raffle tickets as soon as possible. A little known secret is that the financial success of a festival is based on the ability to sell a large number of the raffle tickets, so please help out by selling your tickets. If you like good music, dancing and having a fun night out with friends, please look at the various groups the committees are bringing to our parishes. All of them are very popular and some are new to our area. There will be various styles of music, but all will provide a fun time for everyone. Hope to see you at the festival. MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

In the readings today we again here that famous verse about taking up your cross and following Jesus. The initial reaction is to see serving Jesus and ministry as a whole, as a burden. But before we jump to that initial reaction, think for a moment about the cross. The cross because of Jesus, is not a burden but a sign of victory and love.

Catholic Services Appeal

The 2017 Catholic Services Appeal is underway. Gifts to the CSA make

possible a wealth of ministries, programs, and services that touch the

lives of thousands throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit each day.

This year’s CSA theme, Opening Doors to Encounter Christ, reflects our

Holy Father’s invitation to all Catholics to renew their personal

relationships with our Savior, as “the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts

and lives of all who encounter Jesus.”

If you have already pledged your gift to the 2017 CSA, thank you! If

you have yet to make your gift, please prayerfully consider generously

supporting this year’s effort. You may pledge your gift online at

give.aodcsa.org. Your gift has a tremendous impact to countless

beneficiaries to CSA-funded services in Southeast Michigan and beyond.

For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and

services, go to www.aod.org.

Q: Doesn’t the Catholic Church make too much of the mother of Jesus? A: Well I certainly hope so. Let’s not forget, the church on earth is not a hotel for saints, it is a hospital for sinners. We have the Church Triumphant (heaven), The Church Penitent (purgatory), and the

Church Militant (us on earth). Our militant understandings are so far below His reality that our “too much” pales to God’s Glory. Jesus glorified his mother in ways far beyond our understanding. The most extravagant office we can imagine doesn’t come close to measuring up to her. Our human “too much” falls short, but it displays our desire to do our best. Through Jesus all things were created (John 1:3 – Colossians 1:16). This means that Jesus created His own mother. If you were in that position wouldn’t you create the best mom you possible could? If God did indeed create His own human, earthly mother - wouldn’t He do the same? Wouldn’t the mother you would create for yourself have the most beautiful complexion, the highest intellect, greatest capacity to love, the most humble spirit, the most kind hearted, and be the most patient mother of all time? The Blessed Virgin Mother Mary would indeed be all of the above and more. More because our human concept of these attributes can’t measure up to God’s fullness. The best we can do is make “too much” of her from our inadequate understanding. Since Sacred Scripture doesn’t record Jesus ever saying anything frivolous, we can be sure that His dying words from the cross were intended to convey a very important message. The Bible doesn’t actually name John in the above passage it only says “the disciple He loved.” Are we not all disciples He loves? Therefore, we can insert our own names into this passage. Since we are members of the body of Christ (Romans 12:4-5 & 1 Corinthians 12:12-27), is Mary not our mother too? We just can’t appreciate her too much.

Basket of Cheer

We would appreciate a donation of a large cooler on wheels for our first place barrel of cheer. The cooler should be 50 quart or larger, rectangular shape. Please not cube-type coolers - they are too difficult to work with. We could also use large baskets for our other prize baskets of cheer.

We also need donations of new bottles of liquor, wine, mixers, beer, snacks, munchies, etc. Please drop off any donation at the Parish Office during business hours. Thank you for your help.

The Festival committee is looking for help in 2 areas of the festival. Concessions needs 2 people to take over in 2018 and the beer tent is in need of someone to help the current person. New volunteers will work with the current Chairs to learn the ins and outs and be able to step into the position as needed. All of these positions require availability throughout the festival weekend plus 5 to 6 planning meetings and a wrap up meeting after. Please consider volunteering your time to the Parish festival. I guarantee you will enjoy the experience. Please call Teri Manteuffel for more information at 586-504-0020.

Festival Donations are needed for the Following . . .

Hooligan Booth

We are in need of prizes to stock our Hooligan Booth for both adults and children. Suggested donations are: back to school supplies, household products, flashlights, key chains, handmade items, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, plants, ceramics, knick-knacks, puzzles, games, holiday items, stuffed animals, kitchen items, baskets filled with goodies, etc. All prizes can be dropped off at the parish office.

The Dueling Pianos concept can be summed up in a single word: FUN. Combine two sharp-witted, incredibly talented musicians with two grand pianos on a stage, and add in a roomful of people: The result is an evening of fast, funny, unforgettable entertainment.

The musical repertoire ranges from classic rock to country, hard rock to R&B, and show tunes to Top 40. Best of all, the audience is the star of the show—shouting out requests, singing along to favorites, bantering with performers, and having the time of their lives.

There’s something for everyone!

Did someone say POLISH DINNER?

Yes they did!!!! The K of C has offered to put on a Polish Dinner for the Festival this year and we are thrilled. The K of

C’s Polish Dinner is so authentic because it is made from scratch. People rave about how good it is. To show them our

gratitude and excitement, we are seeking volunteers to help the K of C prepare and cook; can you help?? If you would

like to help, please contact Sue Ann Wessel, Larry Pfeifer or the parish office.

Thank you in advance.

Thank You for a Great Job!

Thanks to the many volunteers for all the work you did to make Fr. Sean's Farewell Open House a success. I can

always count on Holy Family and St. Augustine people to step up to the plate. There are so many of you to thank, that I won't mention names because I don't want to miss anyone. Thanks, if you decorated, set-up tables, greeted guests, made a salad, appetizer, or dessert, packed up food, or cleaned up, or anything else you did to help. You are great and make me feel fortunate to belong here. God bless.
