Priestly Vocations
Discernment Group
The Office of Priestly Vocations’ discernment
group for men (18-55) considering the
priesthood is having its next meeting on
Thursday, April 22, 2021, 7:00 - 8:30pm. New
members can join at any time, as there is no
requirement to have been at the last meeting.
The previous nights have been a great success
with many men excited to talk about their
possible vocation to the priesthood. Meetings
are led by Fr. Craig Giera, Director of Priestly
Vocations, and will include prayer, group
discussion on discernment, light refreshments,
and fellowship with other-like-minded men.
Please contact the vocation office for more info:

groups/.
Men of the Hearts Podcast
Office of Priestly Vocations
Listen to our new podcast co-hosted by Fr. Craig
Giera, Director of Priestly Vocations, and Fr. David
Pellican, Associate Pastor at Divine Child Parish, as
they explore the richness of priestly vocations and
share how to discern a call from God. We are Men of
the Hearts because both the Immaculate Heart of
Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus beat as one to
animate the calling young men. It is Mary that brings
us to Jesus, and it is at Sacred Heart Major
Seminary that men’s hearts are formed after the
Sacred Heart of Jesus. To listen to the podcast,
please visit:
https://detroitpriestlyvocations.com/category/podcast/
The themes linked in today’s Scripture readings
encourage us to avoid sin by following the Lord’s
directives, to repent, and to seek forgiveness. St.
Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles, reminds the
people, and us, of the evil of Christ’s passion and
death, and that through repentance and
conversion, our sins be wiped away. St. John, in
his First Letter, tells us that Jesus is an offering
for our sins. In St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus appears
to His disciples after His Resurrection while two
of them recount their encounter with Jesus on the
road to Emmaus. They finally recognize Him in
the breaking of the bread. The Church has
long taught that partaking of the Eucharist
strengthens us on our journey as Christ’s
disciples. Likewise, participating in the Sacra-
ment of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins
opens us to Christ’s grace, bringing us closer to
Him, giving us peace in our lives. This week, go
to confession and receive Holy Communion to
draw into union with Christ.

FA I TH MATT ER S
Q: Lately, I have been reading my
bible more than just Sunday’s
readings. In the book of Mark I read
that Jesus drove out some demons
into a herd of swine, which ran down
the bluff, into the water and drowned.
Could not such an action be construed
as cruelty to animals?
A: In our modern society many of
the things Jesus did and said have had
their meaning obscured by our
misunderstanding of an ancient
culture half a world away. This is
perhaps just one of those examples. I
remember my first encounter with this passage. My
grandmother read it to me from a children’s picture bible. I was
about four years old. I remember feeling so very sorry for the
pigs that I missed the lesson to be learned. I eventually learned
the pigs are not really the point of the story, and we probably
should not get so focused on the swine that we lose sight of the
wonderful lesson to be learned.
More to the point is the absolute authority of Jesus Christ to cast
out demons, thousands at a time (legion). It illustrates that even
all hell is subject to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In most
translations the demons “begged” for permission to enter the
hogs. Just think of the lesson here; through Him, we need not
fear, or be subjected to, the principalities of this world or the
netherworld. The cruelty charge itself is a non issue in that the
Lord did not drive the demons into the herd of swine; the
demons begged his permission to enter the herd. Jesus merely
granted permission.
There are other lessons as well to be learned from this passage.
Swine were (and still are) considered unclean animals in the
Orthodox Jewish culture. Here we see the symbolism of unclean
beings (pigs) subjected to demonic influence. With this, we can
extrapolate that those who have been washed in the cleansing
waters of baptism have a powerful safe guard against evil. Other
scripture passages teach that this safe guard is strengthened
through living a sacramental life. Let your next ham sandwich
bring to mind the wonder, power and love that our God has for
us.
Please send your questions to [email protected]
Dear Jesus,
I thank You with all my heart for the
blessings poured out upon me through
the gift of Baptism. I ask You to send
Your Spirit upon me to keep my mind
and heart open to Your plan for my life.
I pray for an increase in all vocations to
the priesthood and religious life. I
especially pray for this seminarian.
Keep him close to You, and fill him
with a zealous love for You and for
Your people. Strengthen and encourage
him to be attentive to Your Word and
obedient to Your will. We ask the
intercession of Your blessed mother,
Mary, to form him in Your divine
image, by the power of Your Spirit, to
the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Alumni Associaiton Update
Due to the high rate of Covid
infections this year again, the Holy
Cross-Cardinal Mooney Alumni
Association will not be holding
their annual breakfast on the first
Sunday of June. We are still planning
on mailing a newsletter to our
membership in the near future.
Unfortunately, with the funding lost in
the past two years from Covid, our
funds are nearly depleted. We are
asking all graduates of Holy Cross or
Cardinal Mooney to send a check
equal to the number of years since
graduation to the Holy Cross-Cardinal
Mooney Alumni Association C/O Dan
Kilian, 660 S. Water St., Marine City
MI 48039. If you are able, feel free to
send more. Please make checks to
HC-CMC Alumni Association. We are
seeking email addresses of HC and/or
CMC graduates.
By emailing your newsletter, we will
save the cost of printing and mailing
the annual newsletter which is in
excess of $1,200 per mailing.
Please email your address to Mary
Patrick at [email protected].
God bless you for your support.

I am pleased to announce that Valerie Oehmke has
graciously agreed to take over as Chairperson of

preparations for this year’s festival, a few things
that will take place are the Raffle and the Sunday

return all events to the Festival but will wait to see
what the next few months hold regarding the Covid-

Lightening Safety
WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS...and stay
there until 30 minutes after the last clap of
thunder. Do not wait for the rain to start before you
decide to seek shelter, and do not leave shelter just
because the rain has ended.
During your outdoor activities, keep an eye to the sky
for developing thunderstorms. If thunder is heard, if
lightning is seen, or even if thunderclouds are
developing, get to your place of shelter without delay!
Being inside a house or other building with electrical
wiring and plumbing is your safest option during a
thunderstorm, but it does not guarantee you will be
100% safe from lightning. There are still some
lightning safety guidelines you must follow while inside
a place of shelter to keep yourself safe.
• Don't use corded phones
• Stay away from windows and doors
• Don't touch electrical equipment or cords
• Avoid plumbing and water
• Refrain from touching concrete surfaces if
inside a vehicle

“Prayer, for me, is simply a
raising of the heart, a simple
glance towards Heaven, an
expression of love and
gratitude in the midst of
trial, as well as in times of
joy; in a word, it is
something noble and
supernatural expanding my
soul and uniting it to God.
Whenever my soul is so dry
that I am incapable of a

a Hail Mary very slowly,
and these prayers alone
cheer me up and nourish my
soul with divine food.”

The old saying goes “April showers bring May
flowers,” and with only a few weeks left in the 2020-
2021 school year, I am left reflecting on just how
many “showers” and “flowers” we’ve all experienced
in the last 12 months. Our students, teachers, staff,
and overall community have been faced with
multiple challenges that have never been faced
before. With so many uncertainties and a year full of
“what ifs,” even the simplest of tasks have become a
tension-filled series of “how do I make this work?”
Of course, no storm lasts forever. As we celebrated
the miracle of our resurrected Lord, we can also
celebrate our many blessings we’ve received this
year. My students have become masters of
technology and have conquered just about everything
there is to know about Google Classroom. We have
learned to appreciate the small things, like having a
class outside on a warm, sunny day. But my personal
favorite part of this year was the gift of being together.
While living in a now very separate world, we have
been able to come to school each day to learn and
grow from each other. Psalm 107:25 states that
“He commanded and raised the stormy wind” and as
we very slowly return, or adjust, to our “normal”, we
can start to see our flowers bloom.

saints you've discovered, reflect with words from
Pope Francis about the saints, listen to prayerful
music, and learn about the Cathedral of the Most
Blessed Sacrament.
In consideration of the safety of everyone walking
with the saints, it is highly recommended that you to
select a specific entrance time in advance.
Pre-registration is not required, but if you choose to
not select a time before arriving, you may be asked
to wait before entering.
To learn more and register for a time slot please visit:

Additional details:
- Participants can attend with a parish group, with
their family, with a Confirmation sponsor, etc.
- Please be sure to reserve a ticket for each person
in your group.
- Plan to be at the event for approximately a one
hour timeframe.
- If it rains, the entire event will be physically
distanced inside the Cathedral. Masks are required.
