This is one of those very important lessons that is taught to us early on in our lives and yet somehow is often forgotten. Taking the time to think about how we acted towards someone and reflecting on how we would react if someone did the same thing to us is a good habit to get into before we become overly self-righteous in wondering why someone was offended by what we said or did. It simply is too easy to justify our actions or words because we know our meaning, but maybe the truth is that your meaning was not always clear in your actions or in your voice. Just as someone may not understand why you did what you did, is the reason we need to take a moment to think that someone may have been having a bad day or just got done with an argument or dealing with a difficult person right before they talked to you. In other words, we all need to take a moment to breathe before we react. The opposite is true as well. When we are trying to seem pleasant but our facial reactions or our tone in our voice clearly indicate that we are not happy with the person or do not really want to help. You can tell when someone is just saying something to appease the situation, but is not sincere in what they are saying and has no real desire to help make the situation better. Just as easily as you can figure it out in others; others can figure it out in you. Most people are not as good at acting as they think they are. Speaking from an theater perspective; there is nothing worse than a person over acting. The principle of treating others the way we want to be treated is the reason that I have a hard time dealing with gossip. Who wants to be spoken about by others especially when what they have to say is mean spirited or untrue? Who wants to hear that people are telling others what they heard from others? How destructive that kind of behavior is and how petty on the part of the person. Should we not question the integrity of a person who speaks of others and is not willing to confront the person in question to find out the truth? Why do we believe those who speak ill of others and excuse their own shortcomings? Is gossip a Gospel value? Treating others with respect and love as is given to us by Jesus is what we should be holding on too, not attacking people's character or personal traits. It is fair to disagree with a person’s viewpoints or opinions, but we should not express our disagreement by saying disparaging comments about the person personally. This constant belittling of people so prevalent in our culture is something that we need to change. We make comments about each other, various parishes or faith traditions, political parties, football teams, or anything else people have opinions on. The constant stream of negativity leaves us drowning in the swamp of evil. Jesus tells us to love each other but maybe we don't love each other because we do not love ourselves? Maybe that is why people are filled with such hate and anger because they are not filled with love? Should a person making a careless mistake while driving throw us into a rage and fill our mouths with profanity? We need to give others the benefit of the doubt and not be so quick to judge them, just the way we want to be forgiven when we do something wrong. Our days are filled with things we do wrong, as well as things other people do wrong, but too often we want to highlight the mistakes of others and have our mistakes thrown under the rug. Thinking about how we want to be treated by others is important if we are really willing to also think about how we treat others. Maybe if we thought about this more, we just might change the way we say and do things. Have a good week and God bless. We recalled that like those people we too are chosen and we too should be praying in thanksgiving for each other as brothers and sisters. Too often, the only time we do pray for each other is when there is something major happening, but even then it is only for a resolution for the problem and not in thanksgiving for the person. So, we had those present meet someone they did not know and simply ask them their name with the promise to pray for that person by name for the next week. The Parishes of

MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

In today's readings we hear about the importance of treating others the way you wish to be treated.

Our days are filled with things we do wrong, as well as things other people do wrong, but too often we want to highlight the mistakes of others and have our mistakes thrown under the rug.

brothers and sisters in Christ and in this way we will strengthen our bond as a church community. By praying for each other in good times and in bad, we further strengthen each other and share in the daily living out of our faith. Our mutual prayer for each other is a work of the Holy Spirit as it opens our minds and hearts to the mystery of the mystical body of Christ which we are. The only thing that will really unite us is our mutual prayer for and with each other.

I am encouraging you to start doing this on your own now at mass each week. If you are near someone you do not know, ask them their name and give them your name and let them know that you will pray for them by name everyday for the next week and ask them to pray for you. What a powerful interaction in the working of God in our midst if we are truly open to praying for each other and how further fruitful our prayer with each other will be at the weekend mass. At the heart of every believer must be our prayer life but also the grace that comes from knowing that you are being prayed for - and you are being prayed for; each day by name to God for your love, faith and hope.

By living out the example of St. Paul, our parish communities could have as their hallmark not simply that they are a community that welcomes, but that prays for you. You can go to Walmart and be welcomed, but you have to be at church to pray for each other. St. Paul addressed his letter to the church of Thessalonica and I address this plea to the church of Richmond and the church of Memphis - pray always in thanksgiving for what you are a part of; giving thanks for the faith, love and hope of your brothers and sisters in faith. Pray for each other by name - one name, every day for a week and be fortified by the grace of being prayed for.

School Auction

The last few tickets remain for this years school auction. I hope you take advantage of this night especially if you graduated from our school, to have a great night out and to give back to the school that gave you so much. Everyday I am keenly aware that what we have was a gift to us by others and we must leave something behind to provide an opportunity for others to benefit from as well. Thank you for your support of our school.

All Saints Day

Wednesday, November 1, is a holy day of obligation. As such, you are expected to attend mass on this day. To help facilitate this we are again offering a mass at 6:30 a.mm that should get you on the road by 7:00 a.m. We will also have an 8:00 a.m. mass at both churches and two masses in the evening at 5:30 p.m. at St. Augustine and 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family. If you are not able to attend either of the five masses here, please try to find a mass that will work for your schedule.

Memorial Mass

Each parish will hold a mass for the repose of the souls of those who were buried in the past year from our respective churches. Family members are welcome to attend and bring with them a picture, no larger than 5 x 7 of their loved one to be placed in the church during the

month of November. Please place your name and phone number on the back of the picture frame so that we can contact you to pick up your picture. All are welcome to attend the mass and pray for those who have died.

Trick or Treat

Please stop by the rectory at St. Augustine on Halloween night. I will be outside passing out candy again this year and I really like seeing the children in their costumes. Please also tell others to stop by as well as I really want to be known as part of the whole community and here for everyone. There is also a trunk or treat event at Holy Family on Halloween. Stop by there as well for some added treats and fun. Events like this really helps to make a civic community a place where people want to be a part of and builds up the presence of the church to a greater number of people. Just a word to encourage our children to be safe as they cross the streets and run around in the dark. Have a fun time and Happy Halloween.

Thank you to all our young people

I want to thank all those who participated in the now annual Christmas Card contest. I looked at many of the submissions and they were all well done. We will let you know who won shortly, but thank you again for giving us many wonderful images of Christmas. I also want to thank the members of our youth group who painted pumpkins that were then taken to Medilodge in Richmond for the residents to enjoy. Thank you for sharing the season with others. Congratulations to the young people from our parish who are part of the Richmond Band who did such a wonderful job at your recent competition. Finally, congratulations to all our athletes who have participated in a sport this past season. You did a great job, win or lose, to represent

our parish, yourself, your family and your community. Congratulations to all.

Remember to turn your clocks back one hour next weekend on November 5th.

33 DAYS TO GIVE YOUR LIFE TOTALLY

TO CHRIST THROUGH MARY

St. Louis de Montford, inspired by the Holy Spirit, developed a devotion to bring souls to a closer imitation of Christ by imitating His Mother, Mary. The Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is giving of oneself, fully and completely, to God, without condition or reservation. We give back to God our ultimate gift: the gift of our very lives which we recognize fully as a gift from the Father, to be used for His purpose. This also includes the surrendering of all of our sufferings, thoughts, words and deeds to Mary so she may take them, care for them and distribute them in accordance with the will of her Son and for His greater glory. This Consecration is accomplished through a 33 day exercise of prayer and ends with a renewal of our Baptismal vows. Our group will meet once a week for five weeks to inspire and guide each other on this journey to better serve Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Our 1st meeting will be on Monday, October 30th at 1pm at St. Augustine and Wednesday,

November 1st at 7 pm, in the Library in the Holy Family Life Center. All inquires are welcome!

Please call Nancy McKiernan (facilitator) at 810-392-2660 as it is necessary to order materials.

St. John Paul II made this consecration (Totus tuss - Totally yours) and recommended that we all be consecrated to our Blessed Mother.

Adoration is an opportunity to be with Jesus in a quiet and prayerful setting. Please prayerfully consider spending some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. There is also praise and worship offered from 7 – 8 pm. You can offer this time spent with Jesus for your loved ones health, healing, or journey.

Share Your Love: a ministry We are looking for married couples who are willing to mentor engaged couples on their journey toward marriage. It is an opportunity to share what is most important to you, the love you have for one another and God. Our engaged couples need to be able to see what marriage is really like and to know that no marriage is perfect. Giving them a real-life lesson on marriage will prepare them for this Sacrament and what to expect once the wedding day is only a memory. If you are a Catholic couple who has been married sacramentally for at least five years and are willing to share your love with others, please contact Deacon Alan or the Parish office at either St. Augustine or Holy Family. Contact information is in the bulletin. God bless you for the consideration you give to this very important ministry.

Fall Clean Up at St. Michael Cemetery November 4th

Mass - 8am Cemetery clean-up - 9am November is the month in which Catholics remember those who have joined the Communion of Saints. In order to keep Saint Michael’s Cemetery a beautiful and dignified resting place for the deceased members of our parish family, it requires a cleaning twice a year. Following morning Mass at Saint Augustine at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4 (November 11 in case of rain), the annual fall cleaning of Saint Michael’s Cemetery will take place. The clean-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. During the clean-up all debris and dried foliage will be removed. Trees and shrubs will be trimmed as well. This will prepare the cemetery for the placement of winter decorations, i.e., grave blankets, wreaths, etc., which takes place later in the fall. Some of the volunteers will be tasked to help clean a portion of the newly acquired section of the cemetery (formerly the Holmberg property). Please bring your work gloves, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc.

It is my hope we have a good showing of parishioners to help us clean our beautiful cemetery on Saturday, November 4th. If you have any questions, please contact me at (810) 543-1838.

Sincerely, Joe Stevens Chairperson, Saint Michael’s Cemetery Committee
