Catholic SchoolsParents are the primary educators of their children, and our archdiocese offers many ways to help parents facilitate their children’s education. I have a strong belief that Catholic schools not only provide for the academic needs of our children but also integrate the faith into every classroom subject. With the ability to provide ongoing formation in the faith, we prepare our students for their future education and jobs. In a nurturing environment, they learn the traditional classroom subjects through a challenging curriculum, but they also learn about virtues and character development to be well-rounded students. This is the Catholic education difference that I want to provide for all children.

Please take time this Sunday to visit our St. Cecilia School open house. Come see all of the wonderful things happening at our school!

Amen? Amen!

At the 10 AM Mass next Sunday, February 4, we especially welcome our engaged couples who are getting married at St. Cecilia Church in 2018. During the prelude (begin-ning at 9:45 aM), Mass, and postlude, couples will have an opportunity to hear a sampling of music selections performed by male and female vocalists, trumpet, violin and organ that are most appropriate for the wedding lit-urgy. A special brunch and meeting for the engaged cou-ples and FOCCUS marriage preparation mentor couples will follow in the St. Cecilia Commons. We encourage all our parishioners to keep these couples in your prayers as they prepare for the sacrament of marriage this year.

Palms to be CollectedEvery year before Ash Wednesday, we collect the palms from previous Palm Sunday services and then burn them as part of our closing of Ordinary Time. Please bring in your palms, and place them in the bins that are located at all the doors.

all Masses the weekend of february 17-18 will include a blessing for married couples. Those who have been married 25 years or more are

invited to a special breakfast in the St. Cecilia Commons after the 10 aM Mass on

Feb. 18. Please RSVP to Colleen Donovan at [email protected] if you will be attending the breakfast.

For quite a number of years, our parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.” Through this proj-ect, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s dresser can be found in the vestibule with a list of suggested items. we are collecting baby items through Sunday, February 11. Your participation is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Credo (I Believe)Is it demeaning to women that only men may receive the sacrament of Holy Orders?

The rule that only men may receive Holy Orders in no way demeans women. In God’s sight, man and woman have the same dignity, but they have different duties and charisms. The Church sees herself as bound by the fact that Jesus chose men exclusively to be present at the Last Supper for the institution of the priesthood. Pope John Paul II declared in 1994 “that the Church simply has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful.”

Like no one else in antiquity, Jesus provocatively affirmed the value of women, bestowed his friendship on them, and protected them. women were among his followers, and Jesus highly valued their faith. Moreover, the first witness to the resurrection was a woman. That is why Mary Magdalene is called “the apostle of the apostles.” nevertheless, the ordained priesthood (and consequently pastoral ministry) has always been conferred on men. In male priests the Christian community was supposed to see a representation of Jesus Christ. being a priest is a special service that also makes demands on a man in his gender-specific role as male and father. It is, however, not some form of masculine superiority over women. as we see in Mary, women play a role in the Church that is no less central than the masculine role, but it is feminine. Eve became the mother of all the living. As “mothers of all the living,” women have special gifts and abilities. Without their sort of teaching, preaching, charity, spirituality, and guidance, the Church would be “paralyzed on one side.” Whenever men in the Church use their priestly ministry as an instrument of power or do not allow opportunities to women, they offend against charity and the Holy Spirit of Jesus.

A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams

M ARK 1:21-2 8 “He taught them as one having authority.”

Making a sandwich is simple. Top a piece of bread with some

sort of filler material (meat, cheese, condiments), and then top

that with yet another slice of bread. Voila! no one would argue

that a sandwich would exist without the bread; in order to

enjoy it, to most satisfyingly appreciate its sandwichness, you

need to keep everything together: meat and cheese between

two slices of bread. So, too, is the case with the Gospel we hear

today. while not a ham-and-cheese-on-rye, it is an “exorcism-

on-authority” sandwich.

The passage begins and ends with the crowds’ amazement

at the fact that Jesus taught with authority. Mark doesn’t repeat

Jesus’ exact words, but seeing as this event is at the beginning

of his ministry, it is safe to say he was continuing to teach on

the nearness of the Kingdom of God and our need for

repentance: that is, the Good News.

everything goes together. The exorcism is only significant

in relation to the newness of Jesus’ teaching. His teaching is

effective; the Word of God not only frees the man from the

evil spirit, but, more importantly, it is able to free all of us

from the grip of sin and thus give us true life. Our freedom

to truly live, then, comes when we acknowledge that Jesus is

Lord of every aspect of our lives, not just those parts we are

comfortable with him taking charge of.

This week’s (January 31) rCIa lesson is HOLY MATRIMONY AND HOLY ORDERS. All marriages begin with hopes and

dreams, but unfortunately half of all marriages end in divorce.

And of those married couples that do stay together, how many

truly reflect the loving union of man and woman that God

intended marriage to be? Perhaps part of the reason so many

marriages struggle is that we forget marriage is a sacrament. The

wedding ceremony is a wonderful event, but the Sacrament of

Matrimony doesn’t end with the vows on the wedding day; it

just begins then. Through the sacrament, God gives married

couples the grace they need to live their call to service, sacrifice,

openness to new life, and lifelong faithfulness to each other. A

strong marriage is formed day by day, over a lifetime, as a

husband and wife grow in love, trust, and mutual self-giving.

Questions for the week: What is the difference between a

contract and a covenant? What are the four pillars of Christian

marriage as reflected in the rite of Matrimony? If you aren’t

married, how can you use your single state to reflect Christ’s

sacrificial love and service to others more? To study along with

us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program

= Symbolon: Living the Faith, Session 15.

BITTERSWEET NEWS: I’m sure everyone would agree that Fr. Jason Williams (photo 1, center) has been such a gift to our par-ish. I could not be happier with the work and joy he has brought in the last year and a half. The sad news is that he will be leaving St. Cecilia in July. He has been reassigned from our parish and will become the master of ceremonies for the archbishop. It is a great honor that Fr. Jason has been chosen to move to the seminary and to be part of the formation team. This is a very important role, and I know he is a wonderful choice. The archbishop has assured me that we will be getting someone to replace Fr. Jason, most likely a newly ordained priest. 1 NO SNOW DAYS AT CHURCH: There has been quite a bit of snow falling, and temperatures have dropped to give us not only some pretty “bone chilling” days but also some very slippery conditions caused by ice. Know that we are doing our best to make sure the church (photo 2) is warm and free from all hazards. Despite the snow, ice and bitter cold, St. Cecilia will maintain its regular sched-ule. There is no need to call the parish and ask if we will have Mass or holy hour, because I live here, and I have to travel just 10 steps. If you cannot make it to church because of the weather, it is not a mortal sin, and you should forgive yourself. 1 RELI-QUARY BECOMING A REALITY: we are moving ahead on displaying the 60+ first-class relics that were gifted to the parish. The new reliquary will be situated in a beautiful mahogany case (photo 3) located between the St. Joseph altar and the confes-sionals on that side of the church. My hope is that the relics will be in their display case by the end of february. 1 HISPANIC

MASS: on the third Sunday of every month, we have a Spanish Mass (photo 4) at St. Cecilia at 5:00 PM, with confessions heard before Mass. our growing hispanic commu-nity had a wonderful Mass in December with Las Posadas celebration in our commons afterward. The community is growing and would like to continue hosting social events after the Mass. If you would like to be part of this wonderful community, please come to the Mass or contact fr. Jason at [email protected]. 1 REST IN PEACE: A longtime parishioner and St. Cecilia graduate passed away on Jan. 8. Jim Assum (photo 5), a greeter at 4:00 Mass, was a retired police officer. he was involved in the St. Vincent de Paul and supported the food pantry and Wednesday night community dinners. His Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 15. May he rest in peace.

Encounter LentJoin our parish—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the united States—in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CrS rice bowl. Pick up your family’s CrS rice bowl at any church door beginning on feb. 14. During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbors.

Thank you , St. Cecilia community , for generously helping with this year’s Christmas dinner. Your support for this event help ed feed 287 carryouts for our shut-ins. In addition to those meals we served roughly 400 walk -in to-go meals and had 200 guests that came in to enjoy a hot meal throughout the day. This really was a Christmas miracle seeing how we had less then three weeks to pull this all together. St . Cecilia, you have a lot to be proud of . You showed our neighbors that we truly care about them. This dinner touch ed so many and brought so much Christmas joy. So from the bottom of our hearts “ thank-you” for all the pray ers, food donations, monetary donations and volunteers who made this event happen. – Julie Gerwe & Peggy Lane
