A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Throughout this season of Advent the Church has given us the figure of St. John the Baptist for our prayerful reflection in anticipation of the Lord’s second coming again in glory and his first coming as the Babe in Bethlehem. In Luke’s Gospel today we have the scene of Mary visiting her cousin, Elizabeth, which took place after the Angel Gabriel had announced God’s request of Mary that she would become the mother of His Son. Her faith filled response is a source of inspiration to us today as present-day disciples of Jesus. Yes, Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” is a reminder to you and me about fulfilling God’s plan in our lives. I have quoted Meister Eckhardt in the past who wrote many years ago, “What good is it to us if the eternal birth of the divine Son take place unceasingly but does not take place within ourselves? And what good is it to us if Mary is full of grace if we are not also full of grace? What good is it to us for the Creator to give birth to his Son if we do not also give birth to him in our time and our culture? This, then, is the fullness of time: when the Son of God is begotten in us. The Evangelist Luke wrote that “when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant (John the Baptist) leaped in her womb.” Even as an infant in his mother womb, John the Baptist gives testimony of the fulfillment of God’s Promise to send the Messiah in the fullness of time. What John did we must do as well in our time. Last week’s Gospel recorded different groups of people asking John the Baptist, “What should we do” as a sign that they were awaiting the Messiah. He asked them to express that anticipation in the proper treatment of others. We face the same challenge today. Is this not reminiscent of the final judgement scene when we will be asked, did you feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give food and drink to those in need? Being disciples of Jesus calls us to make the presence of his Kingdom apparent. Let us begin once again with greater vigor and resolve to fulfill God’s plan.

THERE ARE NO FAITH FORMATION CLASSES THIS

WEEK

WE RESUME CLASSES ON Wed., Jan. 5 B Day Thur., Jan. 6 B Day

The Faith Formation office

will be closed from Dec 24th until Jan 4th.

The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2:9-14

What’s happening in

Faith Formation?

“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled…”

These are Elizabeth’s words to Mary. Let us think about this woman Mary… She is visited by a messenger from God, told that God has chosen her to be the mother of his son, when she asks how this was to be because she was not yet living with Joseph her betrothed she is told nothing is impossible for God and that it would be by the power of the Holy Spirit that this would happen. Her mind must have been spinning, so many thoughts must have been going through her. What will Joseph say, what will Joachim and Anne say? What will the neighbors say? But, she still says YES! What a courageous woman is this Mary. Here she visits her cousin Elizabeth who confirms that she made the right choice that she believed all that God had spoken would be fulfilled. As we enter into the final week of preparation let us consider our own YES to God. Do we say Yes to God’s call even when we doubt it is possible or do we back away? Do we say YES to God even when we know that choice might not be easy, friends may ridicule us, and other people might think we are not in our right mind? Can we, like Mary forget the negative reactions and say Yes to God knowing that by following his will he will always be there to guide and protect us just like he did with Mary.

“For the moment the

sound of your greeting

reached my ears, the

infant in my womb

leaped for joy!”

The Office of Faith Formation wishes you and your Family a Joyous and Blessed Christmas!

“The Governor of New York State has included houses of worship in her recent directives. Therefore, since the Church does not require parishioners to present proof of vaccination in

order to worship God, we ask that all parishioners (two years of age and older) comply with the requirement to wear masks when participating in any activities on parish grounds. This State

requirement is currently in effect through January 15, 2022. We will continue to adapt accordingly as new information becomes available. Your patience and Christian charity

towards one another during this difficult time is appreciated.”

CAN ANYONE HELP?

Our son needs a kidney transplant desperately. He has the “shunt” now, and dialysis is

imminent. 5 years on a waiting list. We have been trying hard—if ever a “miracle” was

needed, now is the time.

Our son is a “special needs” boy (though 60 in birth years). He has been a trooper through it all. He is kind, polite, sensitive and has no idea what is coming. All he knows is that he

has a lazy kidney.

If you are between 18 and 60 years old and are able to help, please call us at 516-349-0004.

Thank you very much.
