WEEKLY MEDLEY January 5, 2020

Question and Answer:

Q: Why does God give himself a name?

A: God gives himself a name so as to make it possible to address him (CCC 203-213, 230-231)

YHWH/YAHWEH:

The most important name of God in the Old Testament (Ex 3:14). It can be translated “I am who I am.” For Jews,

as well as for Christians, it designates the one God of the whole world, their creator, preserver, covenant partner,

liberator from slavery in Egypt, judge and savior.

Feasts and Saints for the Week:

January 6 – St. Andre Bessette and January 7 – St. Raymond of Penafort, Patron Saint of Canon Lawyers

Recipe for a Happy New Year:

Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and

hate.

Cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these

months are freed from all the past-have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of

Time.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts.

Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one

day at a time.

Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor

of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing- don't

do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of

good humor.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Peace and Joy to you on this New Year and the Solemnity of the Lord’s Epiphany!

Epiphany means revelation. The star revealed the way to Jesus. The gifts of the Mage to the baby Jesus revealed his true identity—gold, since Jesus is King; frankincense, since Jesus is God and Priest; and myrrh, since Jesus is our Savior, who died for us.

All of us have moments of epiphany, of revelation. Those are the times when we see and look at the world in a new and different way. Those are the moments when we find the courage to go beyond our comfort zones and like the Magi, be on a way different from what we previously planned. A consequential question related to this Feast might be, “Where is the star that shone the way to Jesus leading us?” Or “How is the Lord Jesus being revealed in our life as time goes on?” and “How do we help in revealing Jesus to others?”

It was only the Gospel of Matthew, among the four Gospels, that described the visit of the Magi. They were traditionally called Three Kings, because of the number of gifts they brought to our Lord. It is also during this Sunday when we have the traditional “chalking of the doors of our houses.” Use a chalk to write the following above the entrance of your home: 20 + C + M + B = 20. The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the Magi-Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar and they also abbreviate the Latin phrase Christus mansionem bendicat (“May Christ bless the house”).

Blessings and regards,

Fr. PJ

Here’s One Positive Encouragement

Written by a fellow parishioner

Being a human with weaknesses, there are

times when we hurt people consciously for

whatever the reason or unconsciously without

realizing we did. On both occasions we usually

feel badly afterwards and want to say I'm sorry

but do not because we would not admit we were

wrong. There are also times when we feel our

actions offend God so what do we do in these

offensive situations? Do we say I'm sorry and

other times do we ask for forgiveness? Do we

feel as if a weight has been lifted when we know

God or the person we offended understood and

forgives us. Do we leave with a feeling in our gut

that person may not really feel we still love them

which may very well be more detrimental than

the original indiscretion? It is possible? What do

we do? I'm going to start saying the following

for any of my indiscretions to people whether

they realized them or not, especially the

indiscretions that offend God. He will already

know what they are and forgive if I am sincere in

asking for forgiveness. I'm going to start saying I

AM SORRY ( realizing the mistake I made)

PLEASE FORGIVE ME (Knowing that forgiveness

is forthcoming because I am sincere )THANK YOU

(Thanking them for forgiving me) I LOVE YOU

(Letting them know that nothing will stand in my

way to continue to love my fellow man and God.

Let's try this together: I’M SORRY, PLEASE

FORGIVE ME, THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU. Don’t

these words put you at ease? They do me.

GUIDELINES FOR GODPARENTS/

SPONSORS

Have you been asked to be a GODPARENT? Have you been asked to SPONSOR someone ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, or for an adult in the RCIA program?

It is an honor and a privilege to be asked. You are seen as someone that a family, child, teenager, or adult looks up to as living a strong, Christian Catholic faith. You model that behavior in the way that you live your life.

To receive a sponsorship form signed and sealed by the Pastor, please keep the following in mind:

I am age 16 or older. I am registered in the parish. If married, the marriage is recognized by the

Catholic Church. I attend Mass on a regular basis. I contribute to the support of the Church, as

best I can. (Attendance is taken by the envelopes in the collection basket).

I receive Sacraments according to the Laws of the Church, and I fulfill the requirements listed above.

The Church takes very seriously the role of being a sponsor. Choosing a sponsor would be based on the person’s dedication to the faith and regular practice thereof.
