RESPONSORIAL PSALM
RESPONSE: My God, my God, why have you
abandoned me?
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of
endless glory! Christ became obedient for us
even to death, dying on a cross. Therefore, God
raised him on high and gave him a name above
all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus
Christ, king of endless glory!
This Sunday, called Palm or Passion Sunday, is the first day of Holy Week. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Satur-day are called the Triduum—three days that are the highlight of the Church year. There are two Gospels proclaimed at today’s Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Riding on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they blessed God and shouted “Hosanna!” This event is reported in each of the four Gospels. The Gospel from Mark challenges the reader to consider the claim with which the Gospel begins: Jesus is the Son of God. When we read Mark’s account of the passion, we begin to comprehend the deeper
theological statement being made about Jesus’ death. In Mark’s telling of the passion narrative, Jesus under-stood his death to have been preordained, and
he accepted this death in obedience to God’s will. Jewish Scripture is quoted only once, but there are several references to the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Jesus understood his anointing in Bethany as an antici-pation of his burial, and he an-nounced that this story would be told together with the Gospel throughout the world. Jesus predicted his be-trayal by Judas as well as Peter’s denial. At his arrest, Jesus acknowl-edged that the preordained time had arrived. Jesus was both confident and silent before his accusers. After he was sentenced to death, Jesus did not speak again until his final cry from the cross. The bystanders misunderstood and believed that he was calling for Elijah. The Roman centurion, however, affirmed what Mark has presented throughout this
Gospel: Jesus is the Son of God. Nowhere was this revealed more fully than in his death on the cross. During Holy Week, we prayerfully remember the events of Jesus’ passion and death. As we meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew what it means to make the statement of faith that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, re-vealed himself to us as God’s Son.
The latest copy of “The Swag” is available at the entrance to the Church.
THOUGHT
Smiles are sunshine
for all.
Imagine that you are there. We might well ask our-selves just one question: Who am I? Who am I, before my Lord. Who am I, before Jesus who enters Jerusalem amid the enthusiasm of the crowd. Am I ready to express my joy, to praise him? Or do I stand back? Who am I, before the suffering Jesus? Reflection: In order to accept the mercy of God, we must have the courage to accept him publicly. Consider the scene of Palm Sunday. Place your-self in the scene and imagine you are there. Where do you find yourself? Who are you, before the Lord?
Are you interested in becoming a Catholic or do you know someone who is? If you would like to learn more

PROJECT COMPASSION When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. Her family was forced to
pick through the rubbish to sell what they could to sur-vive. In 2018, Psyche Mae is now a young social worker, achieving her dream of helping others struggling to leave poverty behind them –with plans to study a Master’s degree. Thanks to the support of individuals and Caritas Australia through Project Compassion, the Faithful Com-panions of Jesus (FCJ) program helps people like Psy-che Mae to learn job and income generating skills, en-courages education, addresses health and runs pro-grams that enable members to save money and take out small, low interest loans. It’s estimated around 5000 people are assisted directly or indirectly by this program. Psyche Mae’s mother has also become a part-time sewing teacher, her father works with the House Repair Program, both run by FCJ and her three brothers and sisters are studying hard. With their jobs and the help of a community savings plan – Psyche Mae’s entire family managed to lift themselves out of poverty and build a just future.

It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-
year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they were for. "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by," his father told him. "Wouldn't you know it," Johnny fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go, Jesus shows up."
Remember to check the bench and the notice board at the back of the church for current events and information.
