From the Desk of Deacon Anthony September 24, 2017They All Received the Same Daily Wage

Next Week: 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time1st Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28

2nd Reading: Philippians 2:1-11Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Second Reading: Philippians 1:20c-24, 27aSt. Paul, in this reading, considers what can be gained by his life as well as by his eventual martyrdom. While alive, he has his mission as apostle to the Gentiles. But his death will take him to Christ, which he acknowledges is far better. But, for now, he must remain in the flesh to accomplish his work.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9

In this reading, Isaiah invites us to seek the Lord. He is merciful and his ways are mysterious.

Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16aThis particular parable is found only in Matthew’s Gospel. It reminds us that our eternal rewards depend not on time but on the concept of equality among those who will gain eternal life. God’s mercy will be given to all those who turn to Him and serve Him.

Whether their work day began at 5:00 PM or at the crack of dawn, they all got paid the same amount. How fair is that? It hardly seems like good business practice to treat employees in this manner; but the landowner is clear, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?”

The Kingdom of God, as this parable illustrates, really gives us the potential to live in the realm of Christ as a win-win situation. The win-win situation is not a popular notion for those of us who are more accustomed to living in a highly competitive world. So often our value and self-worth is based on our earnings and not on the ways that we experi-ence unmerited, unearned generosity. Even more, we live in a world which so often promotes a sense that “might makes right.” Jesus gives us a different value system; in the Kingdom of God only “Right makes Right.”

We fail to see this truth when we are more concerned about getting ahead of our neighbor (or fellow vineyard work-er). We have a difficult time seeing God’s generosity when we live our lives only in a competitive manner. This par-able of the vineyard workers immediately follows a scene in which the disciples ask Jesus how they are going to get to heaven. Jesus reminds them of the commandments, and then goes on to say that they must sell all that they have and give to the poor.

Realizing how many possessions they had, and how difficult it would then be to be a real follower of Jesus, and in a question of desperation they ask, “Then who can be saved?” Ah, now they are starting to get it. For human beings, Jesus says, it is impossible, but for God all things are possible. Yep, it’s a win-win situation for those who understand that salvation is not dependent on us, but on God. It’s an issue of God’s generosity, not our pride-filled attitude of earning what we think is an honest wage. Justice is determined by God!

The Kingdom of God can be a win-win situation if we do not work to hinder the Spirit.

The just wage of God is given to all when we live in a stance of gratitude, rather than competition and control. The disciples’ questions of, “What’s in it for us?” are questions of limitation, rather than a statement of openness to God’s grace. So often our value and self-worth are based on our earnings and not on the ways that we experience unmer-ited, unearned generosity. Envy because of generosity has no place in God’s reign.

As hard as it may be to accept as truth, “the last will be first, and the first will be last”. Thanks be to God

While essentially a lay association, legionaries look for spiritual and apostolic formation to priests and religious, who, as Legion Spiritual Directors, hold an honored place in the Legion system.

The general and essential means by which the Legion of Mary is to affect its object is personal service acting un-der the influence of the Holy Spirit, having Divine Grace as its moving principle and support, and the glory of God and the salvation of souls as its final end and purpose. Evangelization, especially the seeking of conversions to the Church, should be a priority for the Legion. Through the visitation of homes and by other means, the Legion must, as a first principle, set out to establish a contact of some sort with every soul everywhere. Seeing and serv-ing Christ in the sick and marginalized is another vital part of the legionary apostolate. While not engaging in the giving of material relief, legionaries will often find opportunities to do works of service for the needy.

As I mentioned, the basic unit of the Legion is called a praesidium. Our praesidium meets each Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM in the new Parish Center (lower level of the school). To be an active legionary, it is necessary to apply for membership in a praesidium. Each person is given a weekly apostolic task; they generally work in pairs. After a successful period of probation, members are called to make the Legionary Promise (this is only applicable for members over 18 years old) which is directed to the Holy Spirit.

If you wish to make an application to this wonderful Apos-tolate, please contact Gabrielle Kelly at (914) 400-8291.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

108. What is the Legion of Mary? The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting – in our Parish every Tues-day evening, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion. Persons who wish to join the Legion must apply for membership in a Praesidium. The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each in-dividual. The members participate in the life of the parish through visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospitals and through collaboration in every apos-tolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish. Every legionary is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary.

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, serve the Church and their neighbor on a voluntary basis in about 170 countries.

Drawing its inspiration from the True Devotion to Mary, as taught by St. Louis Marie de Montfort, who had a pro-found influence on the Founder of the Legion, the Servant of God, Frank Duff, the Legion is at the disposal of the Bishops and Priests for use in the mission of the Church.
