next Week’S readingS - fourth Sunday of LentFirst Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 • Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14 • Gospel: John 8:1-11

fourth Sunday of Lent

firSt reading: JoShua 5:9a, 10-12This passage follows the time when the Israelites and the Ark of the Covenant crossed the Jordan River. They celebrated the Passover and no longer needed the manna that they had relied upon to sustain them. From that time, they were able to eat the produce of the land.

SeCond reading: 2 CorinthianS 5:17-21In this letter to the people of Corinth, St. Paul reminds them that everything has changed as a result of Christ’s sacrifice which reconciled us to the Father. Christ’s redemptive sacrifice was for our sins and for us to be able to be reconciled - then and now.

goSpeL: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32This Gospel tells of the Prodigal Son - and of the prodigal father. There are two main definitions of “prodigal” The first is to spend lavishly, recklessly and wastefully, as the Prodigal Son. But the second definition refers to giving something on a lavish scale. Despite his son’s wanton ways, the father’s loving welcome and celebration of his son’s return could very well earn him the descrip-tion of prodigal as in this second definition.

Perhaps the resentment of the older son is typical of many of us. This season of Lent is an excellent time to examine ourselves and identify the feelings and emotions that need improvement.

Gold Envelopes - as you probably recall I spoke at all Masses on February 7th about the extraordinary debt on the Gymnasium, a $1,338,084.65 mortgage. The Gold envelope invites everyone to help with a dollar or two or more to help us meet our monthly payment of $10,200 without touching our overstretched collections. I have been overwhelmed by the great response these first three weeks: $3,530, $2,437 & $2,230. If this keeps up, then the Gold Envelopes will actually pay the monthly mortgage. I encourage more parishioners to HELP! The Gold envelopes are at the entrances of both churches and in the gymnasium.

Bonanza 2016 is doing wonderfully and has reached nearly $73,000 in prizes & profit raised for many needed projects here at the Parish. Our 11 buildings and Holy Mount cemetery need lots of repairs and renovations. Let’s keep buying them so we can hit the big goal.

Thank you for the success of Phase II of the Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal In-Pew last weekend. Special words of thanks go to Deacon Anthony Viola, Jim Celestino, and Vincent & Kevin Reilly for the organization of the in-pew appeal. As you will read further in the bulletin it was a great success.

My first three projects, after lots of cleaning and re-building a maintenance staff, will be the Sound system in Immaculate Conception, Windows in the Rectory, and the Renovation of Fr. Fata Hall - upstairs and downstairs. Hopefully, when Cardinal Dolan launches the Capital Campaign next year, many more projects will be speedily addressed. Please join me in extending a word of welcome to Mr. Richard Ambrosio, who is our new Facilities Manager.

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by foster-ing actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community

within and without our parish.

From: Maria & Children Fr. André Cirino, OFM will lead our Lenten Mission, which will focus on St. Francis of Assisi’s experience before the Crucifix of San Damiano in Assisi, when God told him to rebuild my church. The mission will center on three themes from the prayer Francis uttered before this precious crucifix.

Stories from Franciscan sources as well as the writ-ings of St. Francis will help expand each theme. As we move through the season of Lent, the mission will hopefully let St. Francis’ prayer before the crucifix resonate in our prayers as well.

Fr. André Cirino, OFM is a contemporary Franciscan itinerant preacher whose ministerial experience in-cludes parish work, Franciscan formation, and high school education. He also worked at the Little Portion Retreat House for the poor in the Bronx for 8 years.

He is co-author of numerous books and CD’s. Since 1984 Fr. André has conducted pilgrimages to Italy, Prague, England, Mallorca, France, Germany and the California Missions for Franciscan Pilgrimage Pro-grams. He lectures at the Franciscan International Study Centre, Canterbury, England. Visit: www.as-

CCD 2.0: Catholic Catechism DomainsArticle 9 in the series by Katy Feeney, DRE

Though I personally went through public school, having been a Catholic school teacher and principal, I saw first-hand the beauty of “steeping” the chil-dren in the Catholic culture, practices and rites. It is a beautiful thing! So, the challenge for Religious Ed programs is to look for opportunities to give the children time to experience the beauty of our Faith. Here are some of the ways we have accomplished that this Season:

• Ash Wednesday: The classes were able to go to the Church services with their families, and the catechists spoke about the significance and meaning of the Ashes.

• Stations of the Cross: All the classes have prayed the Stations of the Cross. We took our time, and I explained each Station. Many of the children saw our beautiful Stations in the Church with new eyes, and now will be able to pray them.

• Confessions: Grades 3-8 are all participating in Penance Services and individual Confession. Many thanks to the priests who have heard over 550 confessions!

• The Parish Mission: A parish mission is an im-portant part of the prayer life and culture of a parish. Classes will be suspended that week so that families can attend at least one night of the mission.

We are looking forward to a May Crowning and Cor-pus Christi procession… and I would love to add a Passion Play to the mix!

Hospitality at Immaculate ConceptionWe will have Hospitality at Immaculate Conception this weekend after the 12:00 Noon Mass.

- 5 - 422IC/A

During Holy Week, we will only have one Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This year it will take place at Immaculate Conception Church so I can see how many people come and celebrate. You had always had two celebrations because until August 1, 2015, you were two Parishes. Now we are one Parish with two Churches, two rectories, one school … we will worship together. There is no Mass all year that is supposed to speak of UNITY more than The Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Therefore we will celebrate it together, share the Eucharist together, wash the feet of representatives from the whole of our community: women, men and children – TOGETHER. During the first Last Supper, Jesus pleaded four times for unity. Pope Benedict XVI said, that plea remains his constant prayer to the Father on our be-half. “How deeply it must have concerned him!” said the Holy Father regarding unity, adding: “Jesus ex-plicitly states that this prayer is not meant simply for the disciples then present, but for all who would be-lieve in him.” (cf. Jn 17:20) Christian unity can exist only if Christians are deeply united to him, to Jesus. And as we mark the institution of the Blessed Sacrament on this day, we remember that with the Eucharist, the Church is born. All of us eat the one bread and receive the one body of the Lord; this means that he opens each of us up to something above and beyond us. He makes all of us one. The Eucharist is the mystery of the profound closeness and communion of each individual with the Lord and, at the same time, of visible union between all. For the first time in 105 years, our two communi-ties that had been two diverse parts of the Body of Christ will be “One with each other, Lord, for one in Thee.” (from the opening hymn on Holy Thursday) May the unity that Our Lord prayed for at the Last Supper continue to be evident in our new life as the Parish of Immaculate Conception & Assumption of Our Lady!

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

27. Why will we only have one Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening? We always had two, one in each Church.

From the Parish Nurse

Juvenile Diabetes

Juvenile Diabetes (JD) is an autoimmune disease and occurs when the body’s im-

mune system attacks the insulin producing cells (beta cells) of the pancreas and destroys them. This makes the pancreas unable to produce insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that your body produces. It is car-ried to the cells through the blood and allows the body to get energy from glucose in the food you have eaten. Without insulin, our bodies cannot use glucose so it re-mains in our blood, causing a very high blood glucose level. This condition called hyperglycemia has a number of symptoms:

• Increased thirst (often the first noticeable symptom in a child)

• Increased urination• Increased blood glucose• Sugar in the urine
