Please do not make arrangements for a Baptism Celebration before you get a Baptism date from Sr. Mary, as we may not be able to grant any special requests for a particular date. me of the marital consent exchanged by the par es a specific component of the marriage was lacking or defec ve. Hence, the marriage failed to be a sacramental marriage as defined by the Catholic Church. If you wish to reestablish your freedom to marry in the Church contact the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Prayer Service for Fr. Bill & Those Involved in the Investigation

On Sunday, February 16th, at 4pm we will gather in the Church for a Prayer Service for Fr. Bill and all those who are involved in the investigation (which is over a year old). There will be a reflection given by Bishop Emil Wcela to assist us with our healing and to encourage us in this difficult time.

Our Pastoral Council has suggested (and Fr. Augustine has agreed) that we hold these Prayer Services on a monthly basis. We will be praying on the Third Sunday of each month at 4pm (Feb. 16th; April 19th; May 17th; and June 21st).

All are welcome to come join us in Prayer!!

A special Thank You to Mr. Ralph Ferrara from O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place who print-ed up special Prayer Cards with Fr. Bill’s picture for us. We would also like to Thank Mr. Gregory Iovine who recorded a special song for Fr. Bill that we play at our Prayer Service each month and Sr. Mary for printing and assembling our Prayer Service Programs.

Flu Season Precautions To combat the possibility of becoming infected with the flu virus at Mass, we recommend the following:

Stay home when you have flu-like symptoms.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing.

Clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol based anti-bacterial wash.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Do not receive communion from the cup, if you are feeling sick or at risk for infection.

Do not shake hands (e.g. at the beginning of Mass or at the Sign of Peace) if you have a scratchy throat, the “sniffles,” a cough or the sneezes. Some of our parishioners, particularly if they are sick, do not want to shake hands at the sign of peace. A bow or a verbal greeting to the person beside you is a sufficient sign of peace.

Eucharistic Ministers, Deacons and Pre-siders are asked to wash their hands be-fore and after Mass with anti-bacterial soap or hand sanitizers. Your fellow pa-rishioners appreciate your consideration!

Ash Wednesday February 26

Respect Life “FOR I WAS HUNGRY AND YOU GAVE ME

FOOD, I WAS THIRSTY AND YOU GAVE ME DRINK, I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU WELCOMED ME” (MATTHEW; 25:35)

Who hasn’t been hungry? I believe we all have, and it doesn’t feel good. But for those who deal with chronic hunger due to circumstances beyond their control, hunger is an everyday thing. Around the holidays, the number of people willing to help serve in feeding the poor is overwhelming, but for the rest of the year, the hungry are often forgotten about, so what are some different ways that we can feed the poor? Our Church is very blessed to have a very generous food pantry with wonderful volunteers where those in need can freely come and be nourished with the food that is so generously given by you, our parish-ioners. There are many other local churches who have food pantries as well. Friends Soup Kitchen of the Greater Port Jefferson Area is one that opens at 5pm. (631-403-6707) is their phone number. They always need volunteers. Perhaps we might think about volunteering there, or at other local soup kitchens that prepare meals for the hungry. Meals on Wheels of Stony Brook can use volunteers – (631-689-7070). Long Island Cares Inc. is a large food bank which also has a large list including 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shel-ters. Long Island Cares is in need of volunteers as well. People need clothing, and here at St. Anthony’s, we have a wonderful Thrift Shop full of donated cloth-ing with dedicated volunteers where many people can find warm clothing for the cold months, clothing for their children, etc. Let’s take a look in our own closets and dresser drawers! Try thinking of the rule; “if I haven’t worn this in a year, give it away”. You can give your clothing to the Thrift Shop, and include blankets, coats, gloves, hats. These are just a few things that we can do to help the poor, those in need, those down on their luck or who have lost their jobs, become ill. So please keep be-ing generous. Carry on the work of Jesus Christ.

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”

(Matthew; 25:40)

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a

bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school edu-cation on Long Island. The goal of this initia-tive is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, & create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the

Marianists, who have two centuries of Cath-olic educational commitment & expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas

Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization

Officer & to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will

seek feedback & ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parish-ioners. We value your input, so please share

your thoughts. Visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org

Choices “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and wa-ter; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we can-not choose our own path. We have certain bounda-ries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries.

In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus re-minds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the per-jured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior.

Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well.

The Chair of St. Peter the Apostle February 22 In brushing up for “Catholic Jeopardy,” it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It’s for a chair: Saint Peter’s chair in fact

After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in today’s Syria, the place where we were first called Christians. From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching.

Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair (“disciple” literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter’s chair has long been treasured. To-day there is a symbolic shrine of Peter’s chair above the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Au-gustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athanasius from the East. High above it is the alabaster window of the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Weekly Reflection Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time Today’s readings draw us into ageless, vi-brant depths. Followers of God’s law, we be-long to ancient traditions. Children of God, we marvel at the freshness of creation. The Old Testament readings, from Sirach and the Psalms, celebrate the rich blessings we re-ceive when we observe God’s commands—not because we are slaves to the law, but be-cause the law gives life in abundance. Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians confirms the glory of divine law, but warns that God’s ways tend to be unpopular and misunder-stood in this world. Paul speaks of the an-cient wisdom of God, which is mysteriously both “hidden” and “revealed.” God does not have secret codes that we earthly mortals cannot understand; in love, God reveals the glory of the divine way in Jesus. Saint Mat-thew’s Gospel emphasizes the importance of living in God’s law, enlivened by a deep and personal relationship with Jesus. Passing Away There is some urgency in Christ’s call to ho-liness. Everything in this age is passing away. Jesus’ call is timely and radical, plead-ing with us to drop other business and make reconciliation a priority. The Lord actually says to “leave your gift at the altar” and re-turn to worship after making peace with the adversaries in our lives. Jesus is deadly seri-ous about the need for reconciliation and righteousness, insisting that nothing—not even our eyes and arms—are worth more than love. All of today’s readings reflect on the deep connection between God’s law and healthy, peaceful love. As Saint Paul says in Romans 13:10, “love is the fulfillment of the law.” Here in the twenty-first century, we modern disciples of Christ can cultivate that mystery deep in our hearts, nurturing the tre-mendous twin gifts of God’s love and God’s law, offered to us freely to help us sustain a healthy and holy Body of Christ.
