As my own kids get older (8 and 10 years old), I see them mimic me: faces down, thumbs a blur already texting away. It’s time like these when I make the decision to turn off my worldwide umbilical cord and ask my kids to do the same. Their answer is always the same “Oh Dad, Really?!?”

The newest and most noteworthy addition to Pitkin County’s inven-tory of open space is the 845 acre parcel between the Aspen airport and Brush Creek, from Highway 82 to Snowmass Village. This spine of land known at first as the Droste property was being renamed in a public naming contest at time of publication. It is one of the most ambitious open space purchases in Pitkin County’s history. It took a partnership between Pitkin County, the Town of Snowmass Village, The City of Aspen, The Aspen Valley Land Trust and Great Outdoors Colorado to conserve this incredible property for wildlife and people.

Officially open to the public last spring, this property not only offers incredible views of Aspen, Snowmass, all four of the area’s ski resorts and the surrounding Elk and Sawatch mountain ranges, it is a critical habitat for wildlife, includes rare plant species and serves as an

elk migration corridor. The property is also a critical link that connects several other open space properties between Aspen and Snowmass to create a 2,500 acre mountain park. What Exactly is Mountain Sickness?Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) represents a condition that devel-ops when one is unable to adjust to the lower oxygen concentration associated with altitude travel. Most symptoms develop within 12-48 hours of one’s arrival. When a person fails to adjust to the change in altitude, the following symptoms are often noted: head-ache, insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath.

Should I be Concerned if I Suffer From Acute Mountain Sickness?While symptoms often resolve within 2-5 days of arrival and acclimatization, progression of this illness may lead to high alti-tude cerebral edema (HACE), a condition associated with clumsi-ness, confusion, and unrespon-siveness. Lung involvement may lead to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a condition asso-ciated with poor exercise toler-ance, shortness of breath, cough, chest discomfort, and a low grade fever. Both HACE and HAPE rep-resent true medical emergencies, for those who suffer from severe altitude illness risk death if not

appropriately diagnosed and treated. One should not dismiss any concerning medical issue as a benign complication of altitude-related travel.

What Can I do to Prevent Acute Mountain Sickness?Remember this fact when travelling to altitude: a higher incidence of acute mountain sickness is associ-ated with a quicker rate of ascent. Take your time when traveling to the mountains and consider spend-ing a night or two at a lower eleva-tion if you are prone to AMS. Once you arrive please allow yourself time to adapt to the altitude. Don’t forget that significant physical activity and alcohol use interferes with one’s ability to achieve accli-matization. If you fail to note improvement in your symptoms, please seek medical attention for significant altitude-related illnesses are both preventable and treatable if recognized early.

Vaudeville was popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s. The shows were specifically designed to entertain audiences of all ages. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts including dancers, comedians, trained animal acts, magicians, illustrated songs, jugglers and basi-cally anything that entertains. There were many popular movie stars like Mae West, W.C. This coming May there is going to be a change in the grocery stores from Aspen to Carbondale. The City of Aspen along with Basalt and Carbondale all have banned plastic bags from grocery stores in their jurisdictions and imposed a 20 cent fee on paper bags. The combined effort is a strong move to protect the environment, as well as to send an environmental message to the Valley that single-use items, like plastic bags aren’t necessary.

All three communities are hosts to visitors from around the world and this policy will hopefully inform guests that this Valley is a leader in sustainability and strongly values the natural beauty of snowy moun-tains in the winter, wildflowers in the summer, healthy ecosystems and an environment free from unnecessary waste.

The 20-cent bag fee will go to both reimburse grocers for the costs of

the program as well as education and outreach on the issue which will include providing free cloth bags to as many people as possible. There is potential in these jurisdictions to go beyond just banning the plastic bags at grocery stores and addressing other retail venues that use plastic bags in the future.

Leading up to the May 1, 2012, implementation date, the hope is customers will prepare themselves by stocking up on inexpensive reusable bags that they will bring with them every time they go shopping so they get into the habit before the law takes effect.

The ban does not include bags used for produce, bulk items, frozen food, flowers, baked goods, prescription drugs, dry-cleaning or newspapers.

Aspen’s only professional theatre is beginning its 29th year of high-qual-ity productions, featuring musicals, comedies and plays, with a special focus on family entertainment. Starring Broadway professionals and local artists alike, Theatre Aspen (TA) received the 2009 “Outstanding Regional Theatre” Henry Award, and has garnered multiple Ovation Awards and nominations from the Denver Post.

In 2011, the new Hurst Theatre was unveiled in Rio Grande Park, where the theatre season runs from June through August. TA has also enjoyed an elevated national profile; Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Sandy Duncan starred in Steven Dietz’s comedy Becky’s New Car. A cast of singers and dancers with credits from Broadway shows like Wicked, Hairspray and Ragtime, as well as the Radio City Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular brought the Broadway-bound new musical Vices: A Love Story to life. Our summer production of Annie was so suc-cessful, we brought it back for an encore in the Wheeler Opera House this December, featuring guest star Aileen Quinn, who played the origi-nal “Annie” in the film version of the musical! (Dec 16 – 23).

Explore our Imagination Station. Gifted to Theatre Aspen as part of last year’s “I TA” Campaign for a new theatre tent and lobby, we had a special play station designed just for kids! Our portable Imagination Station opens on all sides, revealing a costume closet, a stage with its own curtain and an art wall for kids

to express themselves with cray-ons, chalk and magnetic letters and words. It’s the perfect place to play while waiting for the show to start, or at intermission.

We are also proud to keep our tick-ets affordable for families. While premium seats help us support our mission, our children’s ticket prices have remained the same since 2007! And we offer group rates and local’s discounts as well.

Theatre Aspen School (TAS) offers year-round programming, with after-school classes as well as our popular summer camps, for ages 5 – 18 from June through August. (See opposite page).

Even though scientists concluded their fossil excavation near Snowmass Village this past July, their search for answers was just beginning. Led by staff members from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Ziegler Reservoir find provided a preserved series of Ice Age ecosystems and is her-alded as one of the most significant fossil discoveries ever in Colorado. And now, back at the museum, the ensuing four months of behind-the-scenes investigations have yielded some interesting results.

“We are in the early stages of scientific study and plan to continue offer-ing updates on our progress,” said Dr. Kirk Johnson, vice president of the Research and Collections Division at the Museum. “There are now more than 40 scientists investigating various aspects of the site and new data is pour-ing in daily.”

BoneshakingNext, in order to understand what led to such a collection of fossils to be in one area over an expanse of time, the team has to consider a variety of pos-sibilities. One idea – or hypoth-esis – is that an earthquake or a series of quakes trans-formed underlying sediment into quicksand. The quicksand trapped the more-than 30 mastodons that visited the area to drink and eat. “Evidence such as the nature of the debris flow deposits, the condition of the bones, and the distribution of the bones may support this sce-nario,” said Johnson. But this is just one of many theories to be examined. “Ultimately we use many types of data to test more than one hypothesis. This site is really complicated and this work is just beginning.”

Art in MotionAnd, finally, the museum has commissioned a series of acrylic-on-canvas paintings that illus-trate the site during various eras. World-renowned painter and muralist Jan Vriesen visited the dig site several times and has created five paintings depicting the Ziegler Reservoir landscapes. The series shows the area from about 130,000 years ago to early winter 2010, just after the first phase of the dig was concluding. Johnson notes, “These visual representations are impor-tant tools in helping us show how this site evolved over time. All of the paintings are made from the same vantage point, from the north side of the lake look-ing south with the Snowmass ski area visible to the left and the Snowmass Creek Valley and Mount Daly visible to the right.”

Call him snowboarding’s golden child. Shaun White has taken home gold from the Olympics, the Winter X Games and both the Summer (for skate-boarding, of course) and Winter Dew Cup events. The red-headed boarding sensation has been sponsored since he was 7 years old, went pro at age 13, and has steadily transformed the sport ever since.The Parent’s Handbook caught up with the ever-friendly Shaun White in early November, just as he was getting psyched for the snow.

On overcoming fear before doing a trick: “It’s not so much the fear, but the doubt. You don’t want to ever doubt yourself going at a jump. If you put the thought of falling in your head, the likelihood of falling goes way up. You

have to block that out and only think of the positive and only believe ‘I’m going to make it.’”

On the competition he’s most excit-ed for this winter: “Definitely the X Games. I’ll be there not only defend-ing the half pipe, but I’m planning to make my comeback in slopestyle. I stopped riding jumps because of the Olympics and in the meantime, everyone made leaps and bounds on what they were doing. I humbly bowed out at the slopestyle comp this past season. I showed up, know-ing I wasn’t going to win, which I don’t like to do often, but I got something that’s priceless: I left with the motivation to do better. I got the fire lit to do what needed to be done to get back on top of the podium.”

Mothers are powerful, beautiful and diverse. Put a few of them together, and profound things happen in a community.

This has never been more true in the Roaring Fork Valley until now, as a new idea in social networking builds the idyllic towns that grace our corridor into more connected and supportive spheres for mothers at all stages of life.

Created by Carbondale resident Janine Cuthbertson in 2010, Moms for Moms Communities has been called the “super highway of local mommy information.” It sprouted from a simple idea, that “moms needed a better way to commu-nicate while finding and offering support and inspiration on the local level,” said Cuthbertson.

From potty training to the fight for the Thompson Divide. From deal-ing with teenagers and raising grandchildren, to joining volunteer opportunities and voicing ideas for education reform. Moms have strong opinions, tremendous ideas, and the drive to make a difference for their kids. And now, they have a very local and intimate vehicle for making their voices heard.

Moms for Moms sites are flourish-ing throughout the valley in Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Rifle. Membership is free and local mothers oversee the sites.
