Hey Key Club,

I know everyone’s been busy this summer. I hope you’re all accom-

plishing your summer goals and volunteering. I know I’ve been busy

with dual credit classes and preparing for the school year, as well

with doing this newsletter. Let’s make these last three weeks of sum-

mer count! I hope to see everyone at our car washes and ongoing

events. Together, we can make this summer of volunteering one of

the best ever. Stay amazing.

Yours in service,

Lexi Cepak,

North Crowley Key Club

Editor

What is a PCM? A Presidential Council

Meeting is when the Lt. Governor updates

the officers of the division on what is hap-

pening in the District and Divisional

Events. This is a great opportunity to learn

new service ideas from other clubs in the

division, as well as getting to know your

Kiwanis advisors. Each PCM will include a

service project and an FAQ session. Club

officers can use this time to ask any ques-

tions he/she may have and get an immedi-

ate response. I strongly encourage every-

one to attend and take advantage of what

PCMs have to offer, because this is what

your Lt. governor is here for!

This month, our PCM was held on July 19th

at the Salvation Army. The event started

at 9:00 am so Key Clubbers and Kiwanis

members could help make sack lunches

and help serve lunch. Our Lieutenant Gov-

ernor, an Bui and our Vice President, Daisy

Doan both attended this month’s PCM.

Together, everyone helped make and

package over 200 meals.

B efore we could have our summer car washes,

North Crowley Key Club had to make posters in

order to advertise for them. On Tuesday, July

15 our key club got together

to make posters for the car washes we

would hold this summer.

The event started at 5:00 at Jordan’s

house. We were welcomed into her

home that was chock full of snacks,

drinks, and art supplies for us to use.

As the artist of the group, my job was

to draw a car on the car wash poster

while everyone else painted. It was a

lot of fun getting to socialize with fellow

Key Club members, while making posters for our up-

coming car washes and Joe’s Pizza, Jack in the Box,

and Chick-Fil-A.

We used brightly colored posters and paints in order to

grab people’s attention and get them to our car wash-

es. Evidently, we were successful because so far, we

have raised over $100 for our North Crowley Key Club.

O n Saturday, July 26 North Crowley Key Club held

their first car wash of the summer at Jack in the

Box on Alta Mesa. It started at the early hour of

the morning, 9:00. It was a day full of hard work for the

club like holding posters and washing cars, but it was well

worth our time and effort.

First, Daisy and Demi would spray the cars with water, then

Crystal and Jordan would scrub the car with soap. Because

we care about the environment, we used animal friendly

soap on all of the cars. Daisy and Demi then rinsed the cars

off again before Crystal and Jordan wiped them dry.

It was a hectic day because dozens of cars showed up

needing to be washed, but our Key Club was able to pull

through and make raise a total of over $100. It also

strengthened the bonds between the members of our club,

since they all had to work together to achieve a common

goal of getting cars cleaned in the most efficient way possi-

ble. Everyone had fun at the car wash, but when 3:00, the

end of the car wash, came around everyone was ready to

eat popsicles and drink some ice cold lemonade to celebrate

the accomplishments of their first summer car wash in the

middle of the heat of Texas in late July.

B arnes & Noble Storytime is a

weekly event North Crowley

Key Club holds every Satur-

day morning at 11 am at the Over-

ton Ridge Barnes & Noble. This stu-

dent led event allows Key Clubbers

to interact and spend quality time

with children and their families,

sharing knowledge, education, and

creativity. Key Clubbers come at 10

am geared with their craft supplies

to prepare and plan a specific “craft”

for the week’s theme. The craft gen-

erally and usually corresponds with

the week’s planned out book chosen

by the members. Generally, there

are two books chosen to read each

week. Once things are prepared and

settled, Key Clubbers set up the

reading stage by moving and setting

out chairs for the children and fami-

lies to sit. The Barnes & Noble staff

announces that Storytime begins

throughout the store to inform cus-

tomers about the event. Once 11:00

am hits, the Key Club members

begin to sit on the stage and wel-

comes everyone to Storytime. The

theme is announced and the mem-

bers begin to read the first book, fol-

lowed by the second.

This month, we had four different story times that each

had a separate theme.

On Saturday, July 5th, there was a Thank You, Octopus

by Darren Farrell and Pig Kahuna theme.

On July 19th, there was a dinosaur theme!

Page 11: The Panther Post - Volume 2 // Issue 3 (July 2014 Key Club Newsletter)

T hroughout the readings,

members engage with the

children, allowing them to

socialize, ask questions, or make

comments about the story time.

Once the reading is finished, a mem-

ber welcomes the children over to

the craft table to join in making the

week’s craft. Key Clubbers make

sure each child is seated correctly

and safely around the table, along

with any parents or families that

would like to join. A member begins

to explain the week’s craft and

shows the children how to make it.

The necessary supplies are passed

around to each child and the craft

making begins. Key Clubbers con-

stantly are engaged around the chil-

dren, interacting, helping, and guid-

ing the children with their crafts. If

any child has questions or needs

help, the members are there to sup-

port them through it all. The satis-

faction and joy in seeing the kids’

enjoyment and excitement is price-

less!

On July 12th, there was a numbers theme, that included

the books The Numberlys by Wiliam Joyce & Christina Ellis,

and The Hueys in None the Number by Oliver Jeffers.

On July 26th, there was a DC Comics theme that all the

kids loved.
