The Palermo Elementary Scoop Issue: 5 May—June 2019

It’s REALLY here this time!

It has been great to see people out and about riding bikes, running, walking, and working in their yards. After a long winter, I know the children have been eager to go out and play! Don’t forget this is the time of year when a sunburn and bug bites can sneak up on you. Some spring and summer safety tips include:

Use Bug/Tick Repellent: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has been around for more than 40 years, but the tragic death

of a 4-year old, New Haven girl, Maggie Sue Wilcox, has increased our need to take proper precautions. The New York De-partment of Health recommends:

~Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and/or clothing. The repel-lent/insecticide permethrin can be used on clothing to protect through several washes. Always follow the directions on the package.

~Wear long sleeves and pants when weather permits. Tuck pants into socks.

~Have secure, intact screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

~Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets, barrels, and other containers. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used.

Protect Skin from Sunburns: The New York Department of Health recommendations include:

~Use a sunscreen labeled "broad-spectrum" with a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of 15 or higher. SPF 15 blocks out 93% of UV rays, while SPF 30 blocks out 97% of UV rays.

~Apply the sunscreen to dry skin 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and again after swimming or perspiring.

~Avoid direct sun at midday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.

Summer Safety Tips include:

~Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

~Always swim with a buddy, along with adult supervision

~When crossing the road, look both ways

~Be careful of “TRICKY PEOPLE”~ those who may try to talk you into coming to help them look for their lost puppy, and so on…

~Wear your helmets at all times on bicycles. 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers, skateboards, scooters, etc.

Playground Safety: Please be sure to send along a pair of sneakers for the playground. Flip-flops and sandals can lead to

falls when students run and climb on the equipment and are not allowed.

KINDERGARTEN and UNIVERSAL PRE-KINDERGARTEN (UPK) REGISTRATION:

DON’T FORGET~

If your child did not attend our UPK Program this year, he or she is not on our list for our 2019 Kindergarten Class. Call Mrs. McCarty ASAP for an appointment so your child can participate in Kindergarten Screening which is taking place on May 9 & 10. *If your child is currently registered in our UPK Classes, you should have received some additional paperwork to complete by June 3rd. Kindergarten screening for our UPK stu-dents will take place during the school day and parents will not need to attend.

Also, if you have a child who will turn 4 before December 1, 2019, he or she is eligible for our UPK program in the fall. CALL TODAY! Space is limited and students with complete applications will be put on the list. Slots are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Our Mission: To develop leaders, one child at a time!

Our Vision: We should SEE the 4 L’s Every Day!

Leaders Know What’s Important!

• Being Present: Good Attendance is Key! Our District Goal is 97% Attendance!

• Being Positive: It’s important that we choose a happy and cooperative attitude! We can choose

to be proactive rather than reactive to the events of the day! This kind of attitude leads to a safe and

pleasant bus and school environment!

• Being Prepared: For example, returning orange folders, completed homework, book bags, night-ly reading calendars (5 out 7 days a week), sneakers for PE class, and 4th grade instruments on Band Days are some of the ways we can be prepared & successful!

Please continue to encourage your children to exercise their leadership! We are so proud

of their efforts!

L- To Love: Care for others

L- To Learn: To always do our Best

L- To Laugh: Smile & find the joy in life

L- To Leave a Legacy: To be remembered as a person who is admired & respected
