THE PACIFIC COLLECTION
These new works by Maria Luisa Hernandez are inspired, energised and fed by the waters of the Chilean coast near Santiago.
Maria went back to her roots this year and returned to her studio by the beach for three months, after nearly a decade of living and painting in London. She found that the land which had inspired her as a young artist had lost none of its power. She was mesmerised. With this collection, she has captured that spirit: the metamorphosis of the ocean, the power of the Andes, the salt, sand and oxygen of this sublime coastline.
Critics talk of her ability to capture “essence”, of “evocation” and atmosphere (Pedro Labowitz) and of the complicated emotions that she is capable of transmitting with brushstrokes alone. Her paintings are sweeping abstract land-scapes, powered by emotion and finished with a mastery that evokes Turner.
Raúl Zurita, the celebrated Chilean poet and anthologist wrote: “[The artist] shows us the edge of the light: that precious moment in which landscapes empty out and are filled with the mesh of our emotions.”
