On 7 th February 2017 (Safer Internet Day), two Year 5s were lucky enough to join Mr Moorfield at Maidstone Kent Police College. Throughout the day, we learned lots of different ps and tricks for staying safe online. When we arrived, we signed in and did a starter acvity where we had to answer quesons on e-safety. During the day, there were three different acvies: an NSPCC workshop, a CEOP workshop and a general e- safety talk. Our first acvity was the general e-safety talk where we learnt the 4 golden rules of cyberbullying. 1. Tell an adult. 2. Block them. 3. Report them. 4. Save copies of the messages. To help us remember them, we made a flip flap/decision maker. On the flip flap, there were the situaons, the golden rules and what the golden rules meant. Our second acvity was the NSPCC workshop; this was mainly about being share aware. Being share aware is knowing what you should and shouldn’t post online. We also talked about what apps we use at the ages of 9 and 10. Next, we had lunch and golden me when we got to write on this awesome graffi wall; we wrote very posive messages about staying safe online. Our last acvity was the CEOP workshop. This was very informave about when to click the CEOP buon and when not to. We also learnt what happens when you click the CEOP buon. When you click it, you need to fill out a report to show who you are and where you come from. At the end of the day, we all gathered back into the main auditorium and filled out some feedback sheets. Finally, we got a goody bag, which included lots of interesng things for staying safe online. Overall, I think everyone really enjoyed the day! Sports captains and leaders take charge of PE lessons

Sports captains and leaders have been given the chance to take a 30 minute lesson with all sorts of activities to do with all different years and to win vital house points. This will help the children to share sporting knowledge, sportsmanship and responsibility onto lower years and achieve it themselves. These will be all sorts of activities ranging from dribbling a basketball to running races (when we are able to go on the field and playground). They can vary throughout the year. As sports captain, I think it is a great way to help the younger years and older years and to interact with them. I have written this article to notify you of the fun sporting experience your children are having.

For this article, I interviewed Mrs Manson who is a Year 6 teacher

and our newspaper editor. What is your name? Mrs Manson - or Cara and Libby’s mummy. How old are you? 21—like all the teachers at Joy Lane! Do you like school? I love working at this school. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The children are perfect (my daughter told me to say that!). What class are you in? Banksy aka The Best Class Do you like your class? My class are brilliant. They have made this year so much fun. I can’t wait to start working on the end-of-year production with them. Working with Mrs Harkins and Mrs Luckhurst is a lot of fun too although Mrs

Luckhurst keeps telling me off for using both the coat pegs in the cupboard so she doesn’t have room to hang her coat! Oops. Why do you like your job? It is challenging and every day is different. One minute you are singing in assembly and the next you have children throwing wet sponges at you as part of Enterprise Week. Do you like working in the same school as your daughters? I love seeing my daughters get their certificates in assembly and saying hello to them on the playground. It’s also great being able to check if they have eaten all their vegetables at dinnertime! Pupils V Teacher!

As our school has been doing a lot of times tables, we

have decided to ask the ‘Times Table Master’ - Mr

Rogers - about his times tables. He has been set the

challenge to beat the pupils on his own times table test.

His challenge is to pass the ultimate big quiz before

anyone else in the school. The test is a series of 14 tests

that reward you with wristbands. Can he do it? Who will

win? By jlottie

How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Loads of people in the world celebrate New Year’s Eve in different ways.

Here are some people saying how they celebrated New Year’s Eve. Mrs

Manson said, “I spent it with my friends and family. We danced and ate

haggis pasties because our friends are from Scotland and Cornwall.”

Cara (Da Vinci) added, “For my New Year’s Eve I went to my friend’s

for a sleepover, and we stayed up past midnight.” Naomi (Banksy) said that her nan and grand-

dad came over, and she stayed up until 2am, but the adults went to bed! Mrs Kyle said, “I stayed

in the cosy warm and my friends came over.” How did you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Christmas Adverts! Did you see the recent Christmas adverts? I personally LOVED the new John Lewis

advert! I also liked the new Sainsbury’s ad. Making the John Lewis ad must have cost a

fortune because all the effects were incredible. When making Buster the Boxer, they used a

real dog, but the other animals weren’t real. A lot of people liked or even loved the

Sainsbury’s advert from 2015: Mog’s Christmas, or the book: Mog’s Christmas Calamity. The John Lewis

advert from 2015 was Man On The Moon. The song that goes with it is beautiful! If you don’t know it, it’s

called: Half The World Away. You can find it on YouTube and it’s by Aurora. Some people like the song from

the Sainsbury’s advert 2016. Others, including me, like the John Lewis Christmas advert 2014: Monty the

Penguin. Who knows what Xmas adverts we’ll have next time? By Sister Do Do

On 1st

December, a new film came out

in the cinemas called Moana. It

is about a little girl called

Moana who saves the world

from a lava monster, but she

does not do it alone! Libby

Baldesarra (or

Michele from the Next Step)

had body image issues from

the age of twelve. She grew

taller than a lot of the girls in

her class, and she felt insecure

competing with girls who were

smaller than her. I think we

can all see what she has

achieved now!

This article shows us that even

the most famous icons have

insecurity about their bodies,

but it does go away. It does

get better. And it does

eventually stop.

By AppleCrumble

What is a body image? Well,

I’ll tell you. It is whatever you

make it. How you look at yourself

is your choice and nobody else’s.

You can’t base what you think

about yourself on other people’s

opinions and, if you do, stop right

now!

A lot of famous icons felt

insecure about themselves when

they were younger. However,

after becoming famous and

realizing that people saw them as

awesome whatever they looked

like, they changed dramatically.

It helped them achieve and get

to where they are today.

Louis Smith (the gymnast and

Strictly icon) had long arms.

That’s it…long arms! But sure

enough people found a way to

tease him about it. He was

nicknamed Mowgli from the

Jungle Book all because he

hadn’t fully grown yet. After

he grew into the man he is

today, he achieved two Olympic

medals and an MBE from the

Queen.

Meghan Trainor was once told

by her best friend that she

would be a lot prettier if she

were ten pounds lighter. When

performing her hit All About

That Bass, she began to see

herself more positively after

seeing the comments on her

music. She grew up on an island

where you could walk to the

beach but didn’t want to wear a

bathing suit in front of other

kids because she thought they

would tease her. Today, she

At a Co-op, a

battery has been

found inside a

normal, chocolate

Easter bunny.

A little girl from

Nottingham found

one o f these

batteries in the ear

of the Easter bunny.

When she bit into

the bunny, she found it.

Luckily, she did not eat the

battery, but she did nearly

swallow it.

The Co-op said that they

have sold 3,000 Easter

bunnies around the UK;

they said that customers

should not eat the bunnies,

but they should bring them

back so that they can get a

refund.

Even though the batteries

are small, they can get

stuck in your throat and

cause you to choke; they

also have chemicals in them

that can burn up, which is

dangerous.

The shop keepers are

worried that there could be

more batteries inside the

chocolate Easter bunnies.

A spokesman for the Co-op

said, “the health and safety

of our customers is

uppermost in our minds.”

Which ships were most popular - Vikings or Anglo-Saxons? It’s clear the Vikings would have won! Did you know Vikings ships are the most famous boats ever in history? Unfortunately, the Anglo-Saxons had some very horrid punishments; for example, if you stole a pig, your hand got cut off.

If you killed your next door neighbour, you would have to pay 100 shillings because the man or women could no longer work for the family. Year 3’s Libby says she prefers Anglo Saxons because she likes the harsh punishments the Anglo Saxons had.

Year 4’s Kayla says she likes Vikings more because she likes the style the Vikings used in their boats. Which is your favourite? By Banana Split

I am sure if you are reading this that you

have heard of Beyoncé; if you haven’t,

where have you been? Well, if you’ve

heard of her or not, I am sure that you

will be hugely excited to find out that

this megastar is having twins with her

husband Jay Z. This is not the first time

that these two celebrities have had a

child - they have a five-year-old

called Blue Ivy.

Beyoncé is now the most nominated

woman in the history of the Grammys, and

has been nominated for nine categories in

the 2017 Grammy awards. There is no hint

on when the babies will arrive, but I’m sure

that we are all looking forward to it!

Have you met a

dog called Kaspa?

If you haven’t,

Kaspa used to be super fat. He is obsessed

with food and his owner Maria said,

“Kaspa will eat absolutely anything

including crumbs, cardboard and even

socks.” After a lot of running around and

hard work, he should be back to chasing

balls very soon.

Mikey is a lovely pussy cat and became a

runner up in an unusual competition

where different animals try to put on

weight in order to win a prize. Mikey put

on a lot of weight and, as I said earlier, he

came as a runner up. After this life-

changing event, Mikey had to do lots of

running around to get him back into the

real Mikey spirit! Mrs Manson thought that

the competition was horrifying and was

worried about Mikey’s health; Mrs Kyle has

two cats at home, but wouldn’t enter them

into the competition!

I know a more responsible owner that has a

wonderful cat that fits in to this story so

let’s begin. This next character is my best

friend’s cat named Puss Puss. When he was

only eight, he started being a bit lazy.

Through the years, he got fatter. Then, an

amazing thing happened. He started to get

SKINNIER! He is now eleven, and he is one

of the skinniest cats I know! He got

skinnier because his owner put him on a

special diet and let him out into the garden

more. His owner Ella said, “before he was

TIME CAPSULE Amazingly, a time capsule was once buried by a famous programme known as Blue Peter. However, it was recently accidently dug up by builders. The presenters, Katy Hill and Richard Bacon, buried the new millennium time capsule under the 02 arena nineteen years ago. In case you don’t know, a time capsule is a group of things put inside a container. The whole point of a time capsule is to remind someone in the future what life was like in the past. The Blue Peter time capsule was to give people an idea of what life was like in the last millennium. Here are some examples of what was inside: a toy car, a video of kids walking to school, stamps, coins, roller blade wheels, a pen, Spice Girls CD, and photographs of Princess Diana. A spokesperson from the 02 arena said that, “The time capsule has been broken but luckily the contents aren’t.” By Banana Split

This mashed potato with cheese is served in southwest France; it involves a special cheese called Cantal, not generally available – but you can make it with something like it: farmhouse Lancashire, which has a lovely, fresh flavour. In China, there has been a thick blanket of smog covering everything around Beijing. Smog is a type of pollution that has come from factories close by. Smog is fog and smoke mixed together. This smog has

been covering China for at least a week. The smog has been causing children to wear face masks so that they do not breathe in the bad air. Imagine having to wear a face mask to school every day. Imagine having a thick layer of pollution over you. Imagine going to sleep after a day of blue skies, and then waking up in the morning and not being able to see a thing. The government of China are trying to reduce the amount of pollution in the air. By Spooky Spider

A new organ changes science

This new organ is called a mesentery. It is used to keep our digestive system locked up; in other

words, it stops your digestive system from moving. The mesentery is part of our digestive system,

and we have known about it for a long time, but until now we have

thought it to be little bits of our stomach. However, recent studies

show that it’s actually one continuous organ! It is part of the lining of

our abdomen and attaches our intestines to the wall of our abdomen.

Weirdly though, nobody actually knows its purpose…yet! By Bug

Hair Analysis Based on all Things Sweet!

By Candi Montego

Have you ever looked at someone and thought their hair looks like caramel, chocolate ice cream or

something like that? Well, in this article, I will tell you what kind of delicious treat I think

different hair looks like! Zoe’s (Year 6) hair looks like chocolate spread (she also asked me what

her hair would look like if her hair were dip – dyed blue, but that question was unanswerable). I

also think that Kirsty (Year 6) has hair that looks like honey! I believe that Kayla (Year 4) has

fudge hair. One person who I think has toffee hair is Lily (Year 5). As well as

all of these, I am led to believe that Holly (Year 6) has hair that looks like

syrup. My apprentice (Zoe) tells me that Alice (year 5) has cocoa butter hair.

What a strange world we live in!

Aligot Great white shark rescued from the beach!

A great white shark has been rescued after it was stranded on a beach at Chatham, Massachusetts in the US. Witnesses say the seven-foot male shark got stuck as the tide went out. Members of the public kept the shark alive and wet by splashing it with buckets of water until officials arrived. The harbour master then attached a line to his rear caudal fin and pulled it back into open waters to release it safely back into the sea. Facts about great white sharks Great white sharks can be found throughout the world's oceans, mostly in cool waters close to the coast. These super swimmers are the largest predatory fish (fish that eat other fish or animals) on our planet. On average, they grow to around 4.6m long, but some great whites have been measured at 6m - that's half the length of a bus! Great white sharks are grey with a white underbelly, which is where they get their name. They have a streamlined shape and powerful tails that propel them through the water at over 60km per hour! Any creature unlucky enough to find itself in the jaws of a great white is in for a nasty shock! Because this marine beast's mouth is equipped with a set of 300 sharp, triangular teeth arranged in up to seven rows. Yikes! Take a closer look, if you dare… By Whitney Whale
