An Invitation from Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry to Practice the Way of Love

I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:17-19

In the first century Jesus of Nazareth inspired a movement. A community of people whose lives were centered on Jesus Christ and committed to living the way of God’s uncondition-al, unselfish, sacrificial, and redemptive love. Before they were called “church” or “Christian,” this Jesus Movement was simply called “the way.”

Today I believe our vocation is to live as the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement. But how can we together grow more deeply with Jesus Christ at the center of our lives, so we can bear witness to his way of love in and for the world?

The deep roots of our Christian tradition may offer just such a path. For centuries, monastic communities have shaped their lives around rhythms and disciplines for following Jesus to-gether. This Parish Life July may signal the start of the “Dog Days of Summer” but Grace Church was full of activity! · With Rev. Suzanne working at Camp Allen the last week in June and on vacation in July, we were treated to visiting priests from near and far. Two priests from the diocesan offices officiated in late June and early July. Rev. Canon Joann Saylors (Canon for Mission Amplifica-tion) led communion on June 30, and Rev. Beth Fain (Missioner for Congregational Vitality) led communion on July 7. Lay minister, John Lothrop, from Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Angleton, led morning prayers on July 14 and July 21. Our own Rev. Nan led the June 23 and July 28 communion services. · Two truckloads of food were delivered to the Veterans at The De George Hotel at Union Station in downtown Houston on Tuesday, July 9. The veterans gratefully accepted over 700 lbs. of canned pasta, meats, beans, peanut butter, and more, to refill their emergency pan-try. · The Single Women of Grace met for the first time on July 10 in the Parish Hall. Six women shared ideas for social and outreach activities, as well as discussed mutual concerns regarding driving, finances, and more. The group plans to meet next on Sunday, August 18 at 9:45 between services. If you would like to know more, contact Jo Nell Parker (281.450.4948) or Johneta Turner (281.703.7791). · Vacation Bible School was simply a hit! The Praying Pelican Minis-tries from Minnesota led a round robin of activities from Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 25 . Each day began with a round of singing with gestures/movement in the sanctuary. Kids divided into three groups by age rotated between an “Imagination Station” (crafts), Bible stories (“Let my people go!”), and fun, active games. Members of the church provided healthy snacks for all and a final round of singing in the sanctuary completed each day. How do we know it was a hit? One of the participants said that VBS was “more fun than going to the Main Event” entertainment venue. Summer maybe winding down but the action at Grace is beginning to heat up. Dear Grace, Although my time away has been wonderful and refreshing, I’ve been closely following Fr Rick and his time in the hospital. As many of you know, he was scheduled to preach and preside at Grace this month, but after learning of another aneurysm, called and said he just couldn’t do it. Rick’s surgery was on July 9th…and his recovery was full of up’s and down’s. Yesterday morning, Rick passed into the glory of God. Things happened so quickly…Susan was updating on how things were going…while at the same time, God was calling Rick home. Dear Grace…I want you to know how proud I am of you…you were so good to Rick and Susan. Rick was given the space to live out his priestly calling at Grace, and I was the lucky student…to soak in his 35 years of priesthood. He graciously, lovingly and with such inspir-ing support walked me through my time as a deacon. I soaked it all in…asked him a million questions and he was so patient…and so kind. He shared his knowledge with me and continually built me up. All the while teaching me so much of what he knew...I was lucky enough to sit at his feet and learn from a seasoned priest for months. How can I ever thank God enough for this? And Grace church…prayer warriors, consummate card writers and encouragers…you gave Rick something he never had in all of his years of being a priest…you gave him love and acceptance…everyone of you loved him un-conditionally….and you told him so. The cards you sent softened his heart and filled his heart with joy. You affirmed his priestly calling at his stage of life and you received him with open arms. There was never a doubt how much he was cared-for and loved. I am so proud of Grace Church. I will car-ry this example of love and acceptance with me all the days God gives to me to serve his Church. Like some of you, I too, have taken this hard. I wish I would’ve had more time with Fr Rick…I wish I could’ve learned more… BUT more than that I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to start my ordained life in the Episcopal Church with Rick as my men-tor. Many of you might remember on his first Sunday back after his first surgery, he present-ed me with one of his stoles. The Canterbury, green stole… Three weeks ago while leading Eucharist at Camp Allen for summer camp, I wore it for the first time…I texted and told him and he simp-ly said, “I love that stole…and I’m so honored you’re wearing it.” We are resurrection people….where there is death there is always life. Rick believed this and he is experiencing this fully now…the communion of saints surround us…and is with us…Rick is now in-cluded in this. Rick has seen the face of God…the God he loved more than life itself…and the God who strengthened him for the work he called him to. He will always be in our hearts and will al-ways be a part of Grace. Susan shared with me that Rick will be cremated and a later date we will celebrate his life and give him back to His creator.

May all of your hearts be comforted in knowing that Rick is at peace and that he will forever rest in the hands of God. Our hope is forever fixed on Jesus and His unfailing love and faithfulness. Rick knew this, trusted in this and imparted these words every time he spoke. If I were to ask anything of Grace it would be this: keep Su-san and her family close in your heart and prayers…and send her cards….lots of them. Overwhelm her with your love…and tell her how much Rick meant to you and why. This will comfort her and hopefully help ease her hurting heart. I’m proud of Grace and I love each of you very much….see you soon…. ~Suzanne+

Single Women of Grace

The Single Women of Grace held a preliminary meeting Wednesday , July 10 at noon in the Parish Hall. This was basi-cally to decide how often and where we would like to meet, and to decide the goals of the group. Six women attended, and we enjoyed sharing ideas. One of the first suggestions was to move the meetings from a weekday to a Sunday between services to make the meetings more accessible. We decided to meet monthly at the church (with Rev. Suzanne’s approval, of course). The main goals of this group are to: 1) Participate in community service 2) Have fun together sharing in various area activities and 3) Support each other as needed Many possible opportunities for each of these goals were men-tioned and discussed. Concerns such as driving distance, driv-ing at night, and financial issues we also mentioned. Five of us took our first step and went to a play at the Purple Box theater in Friendswood this past Sunday. Single Women of Grace group is still very much in the plan-ning stages, and we welcome all single women to come and share their ideas for growth and joy. ACC-17 Conference

Bishops Ed Konieczny from Oklahoma (USA), Joel Waweru from Nairobi (Kenya), and Eraste Bigirimana from Bujumbura (Burundi), embrace after a pas-sionate debate over a resolution on sexuality at ACC-17On May 1, the Anglican Consultative Council suspended its work, and members had the option of attend-ing a 90-minute “consultation” on Living in Love and Faith, the Church of Eng-land’s new effort to think theologically about diverse opinions on human identity and sexuality. Its subtitle is “Christian Teaching & Learning about Human Iden-tity, Sexuality & Marriage.” Slightly less than half the council attended.

This project was not meant to declare the rightness or wrongness of same-sex marriage. The Bishop of Coventry in the United Kingdom, Christopher Cock-sworth, told the Church Times earlier this year that it is about “helping people to learn how to think, and how to better understand.” Bishop Cocksworth chairs the group that coordinates about 40 scholars working in theology, history, biblical studies and science.The attendance-optional session required the suspension of the council’s work because “it doesn’t fall within what the ACC can do,” accord-ing to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Archbishop had con-tended earlier in a news conference that the council cannot discuss his decision to exclude the same-sex spouses of bishops invited to the 2020 Lambeth Confer-ence because the ACC constitution precluded the group from dealing with doctri-nal matters.On Friday May 3, after a long emotional debate in response to the Archbishop’s above statement the following resolution was passed with 83 in favor, none against, and three abstentions:The Anglican Consultative Council

1) Notes with concern the pattern of invitations to the Lambeth Conference 2020 and requests that the Archbishop of Canterbury as a focus of unity ensures that a listening process is put in place with supportive and independent facilitation in order to hear the concerns and voices of people especially those who have felt themselves marginalized with regard to sexuality. The Archbishop of Canterbury will also be responsible for compiling all the work done in this area across the Anglican Communion since Lambeth 1998 and reporting to the Standing Com-mittee [of the ACC] and ACC-18.

2) Requests the Archbishop of Canterbury to look at all issues of discrimination across the Anglican Communion and make recommendations to the Standing Committee and to report back to ACC-18.”The Council members also passed eight other resolutions on Friday, May 3:

1) Calling for continued support of the colleges and universities of the Anglican Communion;

2) Encouraging networks to improve theological education in the Anglican Com-munion;

3) Affirming support of the International Anglican Women’s Network and wom-en’s ministries;

4) Recognizing that there is a global climate emergency, encouraging member churches to make the Fifth Mark of Mission (To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth) “a living testament to our faith,” and encouraging the Lambeth Conference 2020 to be as environmentally sustainable as possible;

5) Calling for work to develop an Anglican Health Network;

6) Affirming the work of the Anglican Alliance and encouraging provinces to support it;

7) Commending the emphasis on intentional discipleship and disciple-making in the Anglican Communion Office’s strategic plan; and

8) Encouraging member churches to invest in pathways to education and em-ployment for young lay people. Saint Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) once prayed, “Day by day, Dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: To see thee more clearly, Love thee more dearly, Follow thee more nearly, Day by day.” I hope you will join me in praying that prayer.

Dear People of Grace: Bishop Doyle has asked us to reflect upon the blessing we have in our dear Priest-In-Charge, Suzanne, and remember that she is a product of The Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. Other churches are in need a Deacons and Priests, and would benefit from the wonderful program at The Seminary of the Southwest. As a symbol of our gratitude and blessing for The Rev Suzanne, the ves-try has committed to a donation to The Seminary of the Southwest in Suzanne’s name. To meet that commitment, we ask you to prayerfully consider a giving towards this donation. You may write a check to Grace Church and put “Seminary gift” in the memo line and drop your check in the offertory plate or send it to the church office. Our goal is $3000. Together, as a parish family, we can pay it forward for other churches in transition.

My thoughts on Vacation Bible School It's difficult for me to find the right words to truly describe our Va-cation Bible School experience, so forgive me if this seems a little scattered. I don't think we could have asked for a better week. We were blessed with a team of teenagers and adults from Minnesota who came to help us as part of their missions week. They eagerly and joyously took these children under their wing and showed them the love of our Savior. Members from our own congregation showed up in big ways to volunteer their time (and their food!) to be present with the children. You all make me so proud to be serv-ing this church! Attendees included several children within our congregation, as well as a few from the community! From the first day, little children walking in scared and shy were dancing and singing together in a matter of hours! They were embracing the goodness of our God the way our Savior asks us to do daily: with unchecked, joyous, reckless abandon. Your Grace Vestry has been busy and continued with good works in Suzanne’s absence. Highlights for July include:

· Al’s Plumbing is working on an itemized statement so that we can receive our insurance payment for damages incurred from the administrative-office flood.

· A request for the Verna Browning fund to cover expenses of just over $11,000 for the removal of unwanted “visitors” by Bayou City Wildlife Removal will be made.

· A special pass-through budget account has been set up to accept donations for Father Rick Benson’s reception sched-uled for Thursday, August 8.

· Grace church signed up for an online payment/giving ac-count with Vanco; details for using the service will follow in the coming months.

· Preliminary date for the Pumpkin Patch has been set for Oct 19; several new options, such as vendor/craft sales, food trucks, and more are being considered.

· Stewardship materials offered by the diocese for 2019 were reviewed.

Life Celebrations We’re looking for creative and nurturing individuals to help plan and support funeral service receptions. These individuals would organize food offerings, manage reception supplies, and coordinate the set up and decoration of tables and chairs in the Parish Hall. We typically host one or two receptions a year which are usually held on a weekday. WHAT IS CURSILLO? A Cursillo weekend is a spiritual retreat. At Cursillo you will gain a deeper understanding of what leading a spirit filled life is all about. You will learn tools that will enable you to live a God filled life in your normal day-to-day activities. It is a weekend filled with God’s love shown to you through a lay people led team of Episcopalians from our Diocese of Texas. Ordained ministers are also on each team that are for spiritual guidance and counseling. The next Cursillo is August 8-11, 2019 If you have any questions or may be interested in Cursillo, please talk to Aubrey Smith, Michael Smith, Don Richardson, or Kati Garner. What is the Way of Love? The Way of Love is a way of life. More than a program or curriculum, it is a return to the ancient pathways and Rules of Life that followers of Jesus have observed for centuries. They knew the power of commitment to a core set of practices – Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest – and the power of gathering in a small group where you find love and support for living into these commitments. If we hope to not only worship Jesus but to grow more like him and bear his redeeming love in the world, we can adopt a rule of life like the Way of Love and find a community with which to practice it. What is a Rule of Life? How Do I Begin? A Rule of Life is an intentional commitment to a set of practices that provide guidance, rhythm and inspiration for living a beautiful, meaningful and holy life. As we place these practices at the heart of our daily lives and join with companions who share the commitment, we grow more and more in the unselfish, hope-filled Way of Love that Jesus embodied in the world. Exploring and Living the Practices We invite you to take time exploring these practices for living a Jesus-centered life. Sit with the words from scripture and from the Book of Common Prayer, pray over the practice, reflect and discern where God is calling you, and note the “Helpful Terms” at the end if you want to learn a little more. And remember: no one follows Jesus all alone. The ideal way to live the Way of Love is in a community of love, support and accountability.

The Kairos Prison Ministry is a faith based, lay-led, ecumenical ministry that brings the message of God’s love and Christ’s forgiveness to our incarcerated broth-ers and sisters throughout the world. “Kairos” is Greek for “God’s Time” as opposed to “Chronos” which is “Man’s Time”. It signifies that God is in control and will reach out to his chosen on his schedule, not ours. Our ministry is at the TDCJ Clemens Unit in Brazoria Texas near Lake Jackson, a medium security state pris-on housing approximately 1,100 inmates, who we call “residents”. We have about 40 volunteers who participate regularly twice each year for weekend retreats which have been modeled after the Emmaus and Cursillo Walks. A re-treat has a four day, spirit-filled agenda where approxi-mately 30 volunteers interact with 42 residents spread among seven groups we call “families.” There is a syllabus where Christianity is presented and discussed, little bites at a time. There are personal testi-monies by volunteers which help us connect with the residents. Our motto is “Listen-Listen-Love-Love” and our message is “forgiveness and brotherly love.” While we are ecumenical, you will be pleased to know Epis-copalians are well-represented. However, there is never any emphasis on our individual faiths, as we are all one in Christ. We cater to the gang leaders, the “worst-of-the-worst” and residents are always ethnically/racially balanced (by design). Weekend expenses are mostly funded by our own volunteer donations. At the end of each weekend, there is a closing ceremony that lasts about an hour and a half. The next one is Sunday November 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. It would be a great experience for you to attend a closing ceremony. The Kairos messages we bring to the prison will not reach all inmates simultaneously, and for many, probably not on our weekend, but the seeds are planted where they can grow and mature in fertile soil. Don’s Fish Fry The date for Don’s Fish Fry has been set for Saturday, September 14 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This is our 18th year to hold the fish fry and we will offer the same “delish” menu of catfish, hush puppies, green beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob, and dessert. Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase beginning in August. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available this year along with a “To Go” lane on Hood Street for quick meal pick up. Expanded dessert offerings include cake and brownies as well as cookies. We will have a Fish Fry workday on Friday, September 13 to prep for the big fry. Work details include: fish cut up, coleslaw mixing, and green bean seasoning-packet assembly. Look for a signup sheet in the church narthex in August for Friday’s Team Fish, Team Slaw, and Team Green Bean. On the big day (September 14), we will need: Grace Greeters to help visitors find their way

around our fish fry campus. Grace Packers to assemble the meals. Grace Sweet Hosts to keep the dessert table

stocked with goodies. Grace Beverage Tenders to make sure the drinks

are cool. Signup sheets for all positions will be available in Au-gust in the church narthex. Please start planning how you would like to help—all hands will be appreciated!
