Nature, Community, Forever

Harpswell residents and visitors value the wild places in our town, and we are blessed with

rugged shoreline, quiet forests and clean streams and marshes. These natural areas are critical to Harpswell’s wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, scenic views and marine water quality (see below for more on this).

Protecting these special places has been the work of Harspwell Heritage Land Trust (HHLT) for more than 30 years.

SPRING 2016

Have you considered that your actions on land have a direct impact on the health of

the ocean around us? Everything that we do ashore, from driving our cars, to building our homes, to caring for our lawns, has an impact upon clean water. With numerous marine species suffering population declines,

we need to understand that over-fishing is only a small piece of the equation.

Some of the answers are easy: dispose of your trash properly so it doesn’t end up in the ocean, and spend a few minutes picking

they reach the ocean. Many marine animals spend

at least part of their life cycles in near shore waters. Eel grass beds and salt marshes serve as nurseries for young fish, crustaceans and mollusks. By protecting these sensitive coastal waters, we are supporting the entire ocean food chain.

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the increased acidity of ocean waters, what some label “climate change’s evil twin.” The buildup of carbon dioxide and decades of unchecked pollution are

outdoor recreation.Otter Brook is located

between Harpswell Neck Road and Hildreth Road.

Because of its benefits to town residents, HHLT requested $75,000 from the town for the project, and voters overwhelmingly voiced their support. HHLT has been engaged in a capital campaign to raise the rest of the funding required from individuals and grants. The fundraising is going so well that HHLT recently decided to raise the $495,000 goal by 10 percent to allow for additional purchases to enhance the future trail system and wildlife habitat values.

causing major changes in waters, including those around our community. Juvenile shellfish are greatly affected by ocean acidification because it is difficult for them to build hard shells in highly acidic water. Protected land helps slow the course of ocean acidification.

Making use of conserved properties as outdoor classrooms is an excellent way to teach young people how to have a healthy relationship with the land and ocean. If taught the principles of environmental protection at an early age, many children carry these lessons into adulthood. Each one of us can have an impact in our own lives, and in the behaviors we model for those around us.

For a community like Harpswell, the health of the ocean is important to the quality of life in our town and to maintaining the livelihoods of local fishing families. Our fishermen depend upon a variety of species: lobsters, groundfish, scallops, clams, mussels, oysters and seaweed. So while many of us simply take in the views and enjoy the beaches, for Harpswell fishermen the oceans are a way of living. Keeping the land healthy keeps the oceans healthy, which keeps our community healthy.

StewardshipNew Visitor Guidelines at Stover’s Point Preserve

In response to community concerns, HHLT has updated its visitor guidelines for Stover’s Point Preserve.

New guidelines ban vehicles from nighttime use and require dogs

be on leash between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day. The new rules explicitly state that fireworks are only allowed July 3, 4, 5, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, which is the ordinance for the entire town of Harpswell.

The new guidelines are posted at the preserve and on HHLT’s website, and they are enforceable by the Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Department.

A New Preserve on Birch IslandThis summer, HHLT will

close on a new preserve on the northeast corner of Birch Island in Middle Bay. The 45-acre property is a mix of forest and wetlands, and it includes more than 3,000 feet of shorefront. Preserving the property protects valuable wildlife habitat, clean water and marine resources. The property will be open to the public. It is accesible to small boats, and will be a great place to explore the shoreline and have an island picnic.

Most of the funding comes from a National Coastal Wetlands Conservation grant. Additional funding comes from foundations and individuals.

Community Outreach and EducationShort Course on Harpswell’s Coastal Habitats

HHLT is offering a seven-session short course on Harpswell’s coastal habitats this May and June. This pilot program provides an in-depth learning opportunity for adults. We hope to offer more courses like this in the future, especially since this course filled up within days of its announcement.

Harpswell Community SchoolAt every grade level (K-5),

hands-on science programming is engaging students with the natural habitats of Harpswell, thanks to the work of HHLT and the support of the Holbrook Community Foundation. This spring students are raising and releasing Atlantic Salmon,

watching the changing seasons, helping with a Great Blue Heron banding project and much more.

Nature Day CampWe believe in the power of

outdoor experiences to enrich young lives. Our Nature Day Camp combines fun, creativity, scientific inquiry and hands-on exploration to create a memorable learning experience.

In 2016 we are offering two weeks of preschool camp and two weeks of elementary camp. New this year, one week of elementary camp will feature art and other creative pursuits; the other week of camp will feature scientific inquiry and identification. Both weeks will include plenty of hands-on exploration of nature.

in her support of the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust. “We have been long-time supporters of the HHLT because we value the outdoors and believe in protecting and conserving land, while also allowing for public access,” says Merkle.

Jan and Merkle regularly enjoyed hiking in Harpswell at the HHLT’s Long Reach Preserve, at the Bowdoin College Coastal Studies Center and along the Town’s Cliff Trail. “A special place for us and our children is the Giant’s Stairs Trail and McIntosh Lot Preserve on Bailey Island,” adds Merkle. “We fondly recalled bringing our children to Cedar Beach when they were young.”

Jan McClintock, a Passionate Supporter of the Environmentby Doug Warren

Jan McClintock followed her passions in life. She loved the town of Harpswell, where

she moved in 1986. She volunteered at the Harpswell Islands School because she cared deeply about her children’s education. As an assistant attorney general, she worked tirelessly for 27 years to protect the water, land and wildlife of her beloved state of Maine. In 2013, she married the love of her life, Merkle Muller.

Jan was also passionate

Given Jan’s passion for the outdoors, and particularly for Harpswell, Merkle says it made sense to suggest a memorial contribution to the HHLT when Jan passed away in September 2015.

“When Jan and I were joyfully married in 2013, we requested, in lieu of gifts, that contributions be made to the HHLT, along with the Campaign for Justice and/or Equality Maine,” says Merkle. “We wanted to share our love and good fortune. Suggesting contributions in Jan’s memory to these same organizations is a way to honor and uphold her values.”

If you share Jan’s passion for

Harpswell and the outdoors, whether you are a long-time resident or summer visitor, please consider making a memorial donation or establishing a memorial fund for a departed loved one. Every donation, no matter how small, helps the HHLT in its ongoing effort to keep Harpswell the beautiful place it is today, and for generations to come.

“Jan felt a deep connection to the outdoors, it was where she found her refuge,” Merkle says. “She instilled that love of nature in our four children.”

If you share that kind of connection – to Harpswell and the outdoors – remember that a contribution to the HHLT can help keep alive the kind of passion that Jan McClintock followed in her life – forever.

Harpswell Invasive Plant Partnership

The Harpswell Invasive Plant Partnership is a collaboration of the Town of Harpswell’s Lands, Recreation and Mitchell Field committees; the Harpswell Conservation Commission; the

Harpswell Garden Club and HHLT. It is an initiative to identify and control terrestrial invasive plants and build an invasive plant-sensitive culture in Harpswell through collaboration among local organizations and active citizens.

Middle Bay Wetlands Partnership

This collaboration of Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, Maine Coast Heritage Trust and HHLT improves our access to grant funding to preserve undeveloped shorefront in Middle Bay. HHLT’s new Birch Island Preserve is an outcome of this partnership.
