What is the UK?• The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and

Ireland, which is comprised of 4 distinct parts – England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland

• The UK is smaller than the US state of Oregon• The nature of an English (wo)man• As in the US, central tendencies in the UK favor

individualistic leanings; achievement and individual initiative are valued

• The British tendency is toward direct, low-context speech patterns

Communication in the UK• UK media freedoms and restrictions• The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)• Ten national daily newspaper in the UK with

circulation lead by the Sun• Radio and TV saturation in British homes is 100%• PR emerged as a profession in the UK in the

1930s during WWII

Similarities and Differences

• The US and the UK share many of the same values and cultural similarities

• London is the “center of gravity” for international PR with the Prime Meridian dividing the Eastern and Western Hemispheres which run through Greenwich (right outside of London)

• Focus on media relations is taking off in different directions

• Major difference in size & media consumption• Edelman NY versus Edelman London

o Working for a large agency is the same in both nationso Similar day-to-day activity
