SEPTEMBER 2013 THE ORTHODOX VISION 3
A s our Church celebrated the Feast of the Dormition of
the Holy Theotokos, we began shifting gears and looking forward to a new Ecclesiastical
Church year. Xronia Polla to all those who celebrated on this important Feast!
As many of you return to Church from your summer vacations , you will notice the beautiful restorative
work which has been done in the Dome of our Church. The damaged Icons have been restored, and we
have put new lighting in the dome. T h i s w a s a n i m p o r t a n t accomplishment in light of the celebration of our 100th anniversary,
which we will be celebrating this coming November.
The dome of our Church has the traditional Christ Pantocrator as its apex. It is the centerpiece of our
Church, both aesthetically and spiritually. The word Pantocrator means, “He who holds all things.” It is one of the titles given to God and
is so often translated in English as “Almighty.” Also, the majestic beauty of this bust of Christ denotes
His authoritative powers as Judge of the Universe. The Pantocrator serves an axis wherefrom sunlit of
bordered decorations emanate the Prophets of the Old Testament who prophesized the coming of the Messiah. Below the ring of prophets
are depicted the four Evangelists, who authored the four Gospels.
We are truly blessed to have completed our dome project with the
help of the daughter of the original Iconographer of our Church, Father John Spilios. Rev. Spilio devoted
more than 45 years of his life for the glory and beauty of the church. As a result, and through a long family tradition, he was ordained a priest on
August 6, 1988, to fulfill his inward, strong religious beliefs for the Glory of God.
Through a long, successful career,
Rev. Spilio has a record of 82 fully
decorated churches in the USA, Canada, and Greece, including the Chapel in the residence of His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos
(former Archbishop) and the chapel of St. Iakovos in the summer camp of the Archdiocese in Greece. Also,
hundreds of portable art works of his exist at galleries and private collections throughout the world.
May his Memory be Eternal! I would like to thank Katerina
Spilios for the beautiful restorative
work she did in the dome of our Church. She continues the beautiful legacy of her father and keeps his
memory alive through her artwork, which she learned under his guidance.
I would also like to thank our
President, George Mourizakis, John Stevens, Tom Hallas, and John
Tsiflides for their assistance and guidance with our dome project.
Our Vacation Church School , which ran the week of August 12th, was very successful. Our theme this
year was the Divine Liturgy, and our children enjoyed many activities and lessons that introduced them to the meaning of the Liturgy. I would
like to thank Cindy Waldron for organizing and teaching our VCS this year, the Teacher’s Aides:
Vasiliki Roussas, Irene Bal, Angelica Demestihas, and Effie
Hallas, and Mrs. Zoe Gountas for teaching the children how to make the Prosforo. I’d also like to thank
all the children who attended (15 in all) and who were so eager to learn and participate. They were a wonderful group, and Cindy
expressed what a pleasure they were to have in our VCS this year.
There are many exciting programs and events which will be available to all members of our Church this
c o m in g Ne w Ye a r. Th e Ecclesiastical Church year coincides with the beginning of a new school year. We need to not only help our
children prepare for a new year of school, but also prepare for a new year in Church. Just like we need
school supplies we need to think of spiritual supplies for our children. Some of the essential materials each
child should have are a prayer book, a prayer rope, an icon, and a Bible. These are the essential building blocks for all of our children in
order for them to grow and develop as Orthodox Christians.
The other essential building block for our youth is the Church herself, where there are many programs that
help build up our youth in their Orthodox Faith, Greek Heritage, and community involvement. Under the spiritual guidance of our Church of
Holy Trinity, there are several schools and programs for youth - Religious Education, Greek
Language instruction, and Sporting events. All these serve the purpose of continuing to make the Church of
Holy Trinity a "welcoming" and safe environment for young families, and this growth is critical for us to remain a viable place where
everyone's spiritual and intellectual needs can always be served.

Ecclesiastical Year
And The Future of
Our Church: Our
Youth by Father Andreas
“Be willing to be a beginner every single morning.” ― Meister Eckhart
SEPTEMBER 2013 THE ORTHODOX VISION 4
Through our programs, our youth receive a well -rounded formation in both the traditions of our Greek Orthodox Faith and heritage, but also put what they learn into
practice through involvement in the community. Our youth are able to interact with others in a safe and supportive environment. There are a variety of programs and events which fit each individual child’s needs. Our
Youth sports programs offer our kids the ability to compete against each other in a safe and healthy environment.
Our youth are involved in a variety of philanthropic,
religious, and social activities. Many of our youth
volunteer much of their time and give back to our community. I have watched them enthusiastically participate in various philanthropic and sporting events organized by the Clergy and Laity, whether it is food
runs at local supermarket or volunteering at the local soup kitchen serving food to individuals and families who are less fortunate. Our youth also volunteer in
teaching Sunday school, leading Altar boy groups, and even leading us in worship. Our Youth are giving back
to our community in many ways and I believe they will continue to do so throughout their lives.
It is your job as parents and volunteers to make sure
that our programs continue to operate and flourish. I
cannot emphasize enough the need for youth volunteer workers. We cannot continue to develop our programs without your support and love. We welcome you even if you can only volunteer a small portion of your time to
any one of our youth programs. It is an investment which you will not be sorry that you made. As parents , you must encourage your children to participate in our
youth programs and reinforce the religious values they learn at home. Learning about Christ and the Church must begin at home. We must work together to help our
children stay close to the Church and raise their own children as Orthodox Christians in the future. The future of the Church lies in our youth and in our ability to contribute our talents to our Church to make sure our
youth stays connected to the Church. I look forward to seeing all of you and your families
this coming year!

Our Parish by George Mourizakis -Parish Council President
I would like to welcome everyone back from their summer vacations. Our new Ecclesiastical year is
beginning in September, and our facilities are all ready
for you. Our Dome Restoration Project has been completed.
Our dome was restored to its original colors and state. As you know, the entire project was funded by our
insurance, and it didn’t cost our church a dime. We came in under budget and on time. We are good for the next 50 years!
I would like to Thank Tom Hallas and John Tsilfides for the electrical work, and John Stevens for his advice and help on the lighting options on the dome.
All of our attention is now focused on the preparation for the 100th Anniversary Gala. All the formal invitations are out, the tickets are coming out shortly, and the hotel is booked. What we need are more of your
personal ads for our Centennial Book that will be published for the event. Be a part on this important anniversary for our community. Commemorate a loved
one or present your family to the community and for the future generations. You all need to be a part of this. This is not a time for politics or agendas. We all have to
be united . Please call the office today to reserve your
page.
On another note, all our organizations are getting ready with their agendas and programs for the New Year. We are looking forward to working together with all the new officers that were elected, and I would like
to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we have to communicate and work together.
We have great plans for our community in the near
future. Last year, we had a great year with our Athletic department. Now, I would love to see the same excitement and progress on all of our committees and
departments. Please support our Sunday and Greek schools by participating in their programs. Bring your children to church. Church is not only for Sundays any more.
We just had a great Vacation Church School. Our kids had a great time during the week as they learned a lot of basics about the Divine Liturgy. For the grand
finale to a successful week, the kids were treated to a water slide and an ice cream truck. Thanks to Cindy Waldron and Vassiliki Rousas who ran the program for
the week. Also, thank you to all their helpers who took care of the kids, and to Zoe Gountas, who taught them how to make Prosforo.
As you know, to run a successful church, we also
need your monetary donations. If you have not sent your stewardship for 2013 yet, please do so now. We will send out another reminder shortly. Thank you for
your support and God Bless.
Happy New Year!
Ecclesiastical New
Year - September 1st
W hat is know as the
C o n s t a n t i n o p o l i t a n induction, adopted by the
Patriarchs of that city after the fall of
the Eastern Empire in 1453, begins on the 1st of September and is observed with special ceremony in the Church. Since the completion of
each year takes place, as it were, with the harvest and gathering of the crops into storehouses, and we begin
anew from henceforth the sowing of seed in the earth for the production
of future crops, September is considered the beginning of the New
Year. The Church also keeps festival this day, beseeching God for fair weather, seasonable rains, and an
abundance of the fruits of the earth. The Holy Scriptures (Lev. 23:24-5 and Num. 29:1-2) also testify that the people of Israel celebrated the
feast of the Blowing of the Trumpets on this day, offering hymns of thanksgiving. In addition to all the
aforesaid, on this feast we also commemorate our Saviour's entry into the synagogue in Nazareth,
where He was given the book of the Prophet Esaias to read, and He opened it and found the place where it is written, "The Spirit of the Lord
is upon Me, for which cause He hath anointed Me..." (Luke 4:16-30).
It should be noted that to the present day, the Church has always
celebrated the beginning of the New Year on September 1. This was the custom in Constantinople until its
fall in 1453 and in Russia until the reign of Peter I. September 1 is still festively celebrated as the New Year a t t h e P a t r i a r c h a t e o f
Constantinople; among the Jews also the New Year, although reckoned according to a moveable calendar,
usually falls in September. The service of the Menaion for January 1 is for our Lord's Circumcision and
for the memorial of Saint Basil the Great, without any mention of its being the beginning of a new year.

over seventy years later continues to be, actively involved in offering financial support to Holy Cross.

W e hope that this month finds you all enjoying the
summer , and we look forward to
hearing about all the fun and ac-tive things that you've been do-ing. In mid-September, we'll
have signups for both basketball and volleyball
leagues. Please stay tuned for more details in the up-coming weeks.
As you know, we launched “Inspire Blue” last year,
and we'll continue to make improvements to our athlet-
ic programs this year as well. In fact, we'll need coaches this year, and all parents are encouraged to help out at games, events, etc...
Mark your calendars for October, when we'll start conditioning with our teams, host a Zumba fundraiser , and keep the momentum of “Inspire Blue” going to
kick off a great season.
