Image 1 is cropped from a dust jacket design for a book by the Welsh author Rhys Davies. The artist of the wood or lino cut is not given. The book of short stories was published in 1936 and this illustration is probably inspired by the anti-facist Cherry Blossom on the Rhine. CH Dav R th

Image 2 is from MS 3849 and is an aquatint by Gabriel Lory the Elder. It was made during his journey from Switzerland to Italy over the Alps in 1811. This is a detail of the bridge over the waterfall at the Gondo Gorge. It is from a number of prints collected by Dr Robert Wilson on his travels. MS 3849/1/2/30

Image 3 is from Inc 3 the Hortus sanitatus which is an extremely early book, from our collection of Incunabula, printed in Mainz in 1491. The image shows a woman collecting honey from a comb.

Image 4 is a photograph from the George Washington Wilson collection and shows a fish shed in Kirkwall, Orkney, and is described as a view of women fish gutters and men barrellers. The date is not given but it is listed in a catalogue of 1904. MS 3792/C4425
