II Kings 5: 9-14

John 4: 46-54

I am someone who operates best with a plan. While spontaneity has its

merits, I prefer to go in with all the decisions made so that I can adjust my

expectations. My wife, Katie, and I o% en ask each other on Friday nights,

“What are your expectations for this weekend?” I don’t mind spending

some of my Saturday doing yard work, but I like having a heads up. Un-

fortunately, few things in life work that way. You leave on time for an ap-

pointment and get stuck in tra! c. You plan out your meals but get home

too late from work. You teach your church basketball team a play, and they

forget what to do in the game (Just me?). Even when things don’t go as we

planned, we as Christians lean on our faith in God who has the ultimate

plan for our lives.

Both of the men in today’s scripture readings seek God’s help with a

plan in mind. Naaman, looking to cure his leprosy, goes to Elisha expect-

ing a grand gesture from the prophet himself. Instead Elisha’s messenger

tells him to just go wash in the river. Similarly the royal o! cial travels 20

miles from his home to Cana in a desperate attempt to convince Jesus to

come back and save his son from death. Instead Jesus simply says, “Go;

your son will live.” Naaman and the royal o! cial # nd themselves in hope-

less situations. " ey each have an idea of how to get what they need. When

God presented them with a change of plans, they put their faith in Him.

On this # rst Sunday of Advent, we shi% our focus to the coming of our

Savior. When Jesus was born, the people of Israel were yearning for some-

one to save them. " ey expected a great leader who would rise up and

free them from Roman rule. What they got was a baby born in a barn. We

can plan out and organize every detail based on what we think we need.

" ankfully we have a God who loves us so deeply that he sent us what we

really need. We only have to have faith and believe.
