June 2020 PRE-ORDER/MAIL ORDER LIST
www.facebook.com/orchidphile (203) 329-7255
Address all correspondence & orders to: [email protected]
(Please mention “Plant Pre-Order” or “Mail Order” in the subject line)
This list replaces & supersedes all previous lists. All orders are filled in the order in which they are received& are subject to prior sale.
We only ship to the US so prices are listed in US Dollars.
PHALAENOPSIS Categories are divided into:
Species, Multi-Floral Minis, Micro-Minis, “Big Lip” hybrids, Waxy (often Fragrant) Novelties & larger-flowering Classic Phalaenopsis in new colors & patterns
Other categories include MINIATURE VANDACEOUS, MINIATURE DENDROBIUMS & divisions of some of our select
PAPHS plus MISCELLANEOUS GENERA (includes Oncidinae, miniature Oncidinae, miniature Cattleyas, etc.) ~
all of which grow & flower happily with our Phals. Each genus is put into their own category after our Phal. listings.
Most plants are in 2.7 - 3” pots as first or second bloomers unless otherwise noted as being in 4” pots. The bulk of our stock is currently growing in New Zealand moss unless marked as growing in bark.
ORDERING INFORMATION FOR OUR MAIL ORDER CLIENTS:
In the winter or during inclement weather, shipments may be delayed pending more moderate weather conditions. Shipping is either
via FedEx Ground or Air depending on the final destination ~ Priority Mail requests are at the buyer’s risk. We reserve the right to withdraw any offering from sale and to limit quantities. We guarantee all plants to be true to their identity to the best of our knowledge.
However, since many come in from Taiwan, we have to assume they are properly labeled as to their species or hybrid name. We make no warranty as to the productiveness of any plants sold since everyone’s growing conditions vary.
Although we do our utmost to pack carefully, we are not responsible for damage to buds or flowers shipped if buyer specifically requests these plants ~ therefore, risk is assumed by buyer for buds or flowers on plants shipped at this stage
Safe arrival of a healthy orchid plant is guaranteed.
Packing & Shipping Charges:
Based on the total of your order, a minimum of 10% for packing plus the actual shipping cost will be charged. We use FedEx Ground for all 1-3 day deliveries within our delivery zone since Ground shipping rates are much more reasonable than FedEx Air
or Priority Mail.. If heat packs are requested, they will be provided for an additional $4.50.
Additional Shipping Note: FedEx charges an additional $3.50 for “Home Delivery” so many of our clients choose to have their plants
delivered either to their office or to a nearby FedEx Ship Center that accepts “Hold for Pickup” packages ~ those business/FedEx locations always get delivery priority over the average Home Delivery. If you want to save the additional charge levied for Home
Delivery, we can research a FedEx location near you that accepts “Hold for Pickup’ Ground or Express packages.
During the colder/hotter months, if you ship to your business address or a FedEx location, they’re not exposed to being on the delivery vehicle for longer hours since those addresses get delivery priority. Whenever possible, we highly recommend doing this.
SIZE DEFINITIONS:
PF = Previously flowered & fully mature Blooming Size plants (multi-floral minis can flower more than once a year) B/F = Currently in bud and/or in flower (one spike unless otherwise noted) B = In bud (one spike unless otherwise noted) SP = In spike, just initiating to medium spike stage (one spike unless otherwise noted) BS = Blooming size (should flower in season) NBS = Near blooming size (approximately 1 year to flowering in season) S = about 2-3 years to first flowering
IN TRANSIT = arriving bare-root from Taiwan mid-June (order Bare-root or potted for August shipping) LIMITED = fewer than 5 plants available
PHAL SPECIES:
Most of these Phalaenopsis species are from Taiwan & reflect much improved forms & colors, having been sibbed or selfed using very select parents. Species like Phal. bellina, violacea, venosa, speciosa, gigantea, viridis and javanica are extremely
slow to reach maturity & can be easily lost as small seedlings so we’re only offering well-established Near Blooming or Blooming Size plants. As a result of their extra years to reach maturity, the pricing on these plants is higher than is usual for
quicker growing & more readily available Phal. species.

Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana
‘A09001’ (4N)
(TETRAPLOID FORM of Species)
A dynamite tetraploid form of this favorite of all Phal. species ! This clone is producing more compact leaves and much larger flowers than is typical for this subspecies of aphrodite. Its fuller
form & beautifully round flowers with the petals almost touching carries great
substance & produces a much longer-lasting display with a smaller leaf span than is typical for this species. And the bonus to this particular 4N strain is their naturally & gracefully cascading spikes with the flowers displayed to perfection
making for a stunning display !

Phal. equestris fma. coerulea
(Blue lip form of Species)
This white form of Phal. equestris bears soft cerulean blue lips, varying slightly in their blue intensity according to light &
temperature when they’re forming. Beautifully compact spikes are produced
on their first flowering with some carrying the blue into the petals as a light flush. Always leave the still-green spikes on these plants since they can continue to either add additional buds or produce
keikis from the original spike & still create additional new flowering spikes !

Phal. inscriptiosinensis
Endemic to Sumatra found growing in light shade on forest trees, this small to medium sized species is a hot to warm

Phal. javanica
This particular strain is the result of a selfing of an extremely good color form
of this species ! Very compact pendulous spikes produce small flowers
cascading over or between compact round leaves. Again, we’ve found this
species does better in our greenhouses when grown a little cooler & shadier at a
lower bench level. And for its best flowering display, many growers mount
this species. The two we’ve flowered from this group so far have wonderful
dark stippled striping on them !

PHALAENOPSIS HYBRIDS
Most of these clones are the result of cutting-edge Taiwanese breeding programs & are plants we’ve hand-selected from some of the most forward-thinking nurseries during our annual trips to Taiwan to judge their TIOS Orchid Show. The
advantage to many of the Multi-floral Minis is that they tend to spike more than once a year due to their breeding background. We’ve actually discovered that many spike again within 3-4 months after the initial flowering is over !
PLEASE NOTE: With many of the harlequins & the blue, red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various
times of the year can cause some variation in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red novelty-type hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background
will flower showing more of the influence of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to winter months, the red pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid to nearly solid red flowers.
Also, many hybrids with a heavy Harlequin influence will show their boldest and most vivid colors when bloomed under cooler temperatures & brighter light during the fall & winter.
In addition, many of the Novelty-type hybrids with Phal. bellina and/or violacea in their breeding background improve in color intensity and size, with even fuller form, on their 2
nd & 3
rd flowerings, just like their species parents.

Phal. Charming Little Cutie
‘Lee 1155’
(Sogo Vivien x Houston Glory)
Charming is as Charming does ~ and this mini is just totally charming ! Using one of our most favorite multi-mini parents,
the white candy-striped Sogo Vivien, mated to a fabulous yellow harlequin,
Phal. Charming Little Cutie has taken on the best of both. It has retained the great candy-stripes of Sogo Vivien in addition
to its multi-mini flower size & floriferousness. Houston Glory has
added a bright red lip & a yellow background producing its 2 ¼” flowers on taller branching spikes. It has also
added a heavier substance to the flowers which translates to a longer lasting
display on vigorously branching spikes. Our newest most favorite multi-mini !

A stunning harlequin-influenced multi-floral miniature ! Its flowers are heavily suffused with harlequin spotting fusing
to an intense & velvety dark fuchsia-burgundy (darker than our photo shows)
covering most of the 1 ½” flowers, leaving just a charming fuchsia-pink
picotee as a halo around its segments. This particular hybrid also has very attractive silvery-green foliage as
opposed to the traditional dark green leaves of many miniatures. And as first
bloomers they rewarded us with compact branching spikes producing
over ten flowers on each, while those that were cut back just two months ago are
spiking once again !

Just awarded an 82 point AM/AOS from our recent Cape & Islands Orchid Show exhibit ! A delightful 2-tone multi-floral
mini with that fabulously contrasting broad brilliant red-orange lobbii-type lip !
Capable of producing multitudes of branching spikes for an amazingly
floriferous presentation ~ many of these spiked again within 2 months, meaning
twice a year flowering. And this year we discovered that the cooler nights of fall to winter encouraged these same plants to create up to 6 spikes each ! It can also readily make basal keikis which, when mature, will flower at the same time as
the mother plant, making for a spectacular show. The charm of this
particular clone is that the petals & dorsal sepal are pink with the contrast of white bi-color accented lateral sepals, creating

great mix of harlequin and splash accents. Its intensity of harlequin

Our newest & most exciting find, this multi-floral mini is RED ! A mix of an art
shade miniature with a rich pink miniature has created a little wonder that produced 1-2 heavily branching compact
spikes over very compact leaf spans. And thanks to its pod parent, its buds are
very slow to open on the spikes with much longer-lasting flowers due to their
heavier substance than is typical for multi-floral minis. When flowered in the
cooler & brighter months, the flowers are red ~ when bloomed under warmer &

MICRO-MINIS ~ PERFECT FOR SPACE-CHALLENGED COLLECTIONS:
These smaller growing Phalaenopsis are ideal for tucking into any space-challenged colletion. Their leaf spans are much smaller than those of multi-floral miniatures & they produce multitudes of smaller charming flowers. Many have been bred
from smaller growing Phalaenopsis species like Phal. lobbii, parishii & pulcherrima ~ and they usually flower more than once a year, with many from this type of breeding continuing to add additional buds & flowers on previously bloomed spikes while
continuing to add a new spike or two.
Phal. Chienlung Cute Lobi ‘M’
(Liu’s Cute Angel x lobbii)
Finally, an easy-to-grow primary hybrid of
Phal. lobbii that flowers with even more flowers per spike than Phal. lobbii, but with the flowers being exactly like that
charming species ! For many, Phal. lobbii is one of the more difficult species to grow so we’re always looking for near-
primaries that produce flowers like the species but are much easier to grow & flower. This little cutie flowers on very
compact spikes over delightfully miniature round leaves, giving us, on its first flowering, two spikes with 5 or more flowers per spike & it will continue to add
more buds to its original spikes in addition to producing new. So if the spikes remain green, do not remove them. As these grow up we expect
multiple spikes on very micro-miniature growers.

“BIG LIP” HYBRIDS:
One of the most important factors in today’s “Big Lip” breeding is a large flat lip that is almost identical to the petals ! We have seen some pretty poor hybrids in this new line of breeding over the past 2-3 years, with their “big lips” either cupped or
crippled, or with the “lip” dropping so far down from the other segments of the flower that you could drive a truck right through it ! The clones we choose to carry must have a beautiful broad flat lip tucked right up into the flower itself so it gives the definite impression of a 3-petal ~ or 3-lip ~ flower. There have been only a few so far that meet those standards for us, &
we’re excited to be able to share some of them with everyone.

WAXY ~ OFTEN FRAGRANT ~ BRIGHTLY-COLORED NOVELTIES:
This group of Waxy Novelties includes limited Stem Props & Poly Props from Taiwan. As mentioned under Phal. species, due
to the heavy influence of the slower-growing species of Phal. bellina, violacea, lueddemanniana, amboinensis & venosa in their breeding backgrounds, it often takes an additional year or two for these hybrids to reach flowering size as opposed to a standard Phalaenopsis. But once they do, they’re well worth the wait for their vivid color, thick long-lasting waxy flowers & amazing fragrances. They also have a tendency to produce basal keikis from the mother plant for the ultimate presentation.
In addition, many of these Novelty-type hybrids improve even more in their color intensity and size while adding fuller form on their 2
nd & 3
rd flowerings. They will retain previously flowered green spikes, continuing to add more buds to them, while still
producing additional spikes ~ within a couple of years these plants can be surrounded with multiple spikes in full flower for a sensational show to please all the senses !

richer blackened-burgundy which are sharply contrasted against the chalk
white flowers. Medium height branching spikes bear large 3 ½ - 4” flowers. What we especially love about this new clone is the almost black moustache on the
side lobes of the lip, further adding to the impact of its flowers. An arresting new

SELECT ONE-OF-A-KIND NOVELTY SEEDLINGS:
Many of our novelty or select seedlings will be flowering for the first time for us this spring into fall ~ and with Phal. bellina in the background of many, as first bloomers they will initially produce only 1-3 flowers on their first spikes. This type of
breeding is extremely slow to grow to maturity due to the heavy influence of the slower-growing waxy Phal species in their background. With these waxy novelties, we leave any still-green spikes on the plants since they will most likely add more
buds to these spikes in addition to producing new spikes at their next flowering. Some people choose to remove the initial spikes & give the energy back to the plant. However, we’ve never noticed (with novelty-type breeding) that it makes much
difference in the overall vigor of the plant since their parentage carries the habit of retaining older spikes. Also, their flower form, color and size improve enormously with their 2
nd & 3
rd flowerings. But ~ the real bonus to owning a One-of-a-Kind plant
is that you can give it your own clonal name !
As they flower we’ll number & photograph each one for sale ~ they’ll be showcased on our monthly Pre-Order Lists under Waxy Novelties in addition to being shared on our Facebook page &
when available, on the Facebook page of Orchids, Trade & Sale.
OTHER GENERA WHICH GROW & FLOWER HAPPILY UNDER PHALAENOPSIS CONDITIONS
MINIATURE VANDACEOUS:
All these species & hybrids grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since they are miniature growers, requiring much lower light than their larger-growing & flowering cousins. We’re growing them in small plastic baskets, with just a little media in the bottom of each basket, to allow their roots to dry slightly between waterings. In the winter we tuck these little baskets onto the rims of deep rose pots to allow the roots to continue to grow down from the basket into the empty bottom of the rose pot, our own approach to “collaring” that Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids does with some of his plants & which the Vandaceous seem to love. These are mostly miniature ~ & a few compact ~ growing species & hybrids, many of which will readily form basal keikis to become beautiful specimen miniatures producing multitudes of spikes at the same time on all of their mature growths. And most of them are also delightfully FRAGRANT !

OTHER GENERA ~ CATTLEYAS, ONCIDINAE & MISC SPECIES & HYBRIDS:
All the plants listed below grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since many are miniature or micro-miniature growing species or hybrids, requiring much lower light than their larger cousins – they can put on quite a show for their compact size ! In addition, most of our Oncidinae can also be grown under intermediate conditions with bright Phalaenopsis light. Re: our Brassia hybrids ~ we absolutely adore this direction in Oncidinae breeding for its amazing fragrance & exotic displays on showy spikes gently cascading just above the foliage. We had an abundance of these flowering Brassia-type hybrids, all in spike, bud or flower, just waiting to show off at our spring shows which, unfortunately, were all cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. As a result we chose to cut many back early rather than allowing them to fully flower out ~ by doing this many are putting that energy into initiating their new growths which will mature over the summer & produce flowering spikes again in the fall. As a side note, all the Oncidinae are growing in New Zealand moss which they seem to love ~ we never would have believed they would do so beautifully in this medium ! The moss not only helps maintain a nice even moisture in the pot, but it also helps the plant retain plumper pseudobulbs while adding to the vigor of the plant’s new growths. We’ve been amazed at the difference the moss makes for all these plants as opposed to growing them in a bark mix.
As you will see, we’re extremely fond of the Brassia-type Oncidinae, preferring to carry many of its hybrids, both miniatures and standards, from this section of the Oncidium family for their truly exotic flowering displays & fragrance ~ they simply redefine the word “exotic” for us. They are now mature enough to potentially produce two spikes on each new pseudobulb ~ and they love being summered outdoors where they tend to make vigorous new growth(s) thanks to the warmth and high humidity of the season. Now is the perfect time to repot them, once their new growths are showing new roots with apple green tips, and get them established under your growing conditions.

An adorable species, endemic to Mexico, which just loves warm to hot conditions ! When each new growth matures, it sends
out a pendulous, robust inflorescence bearing fragrant, waxy, long-lasting
flowers up to 3” in size. Large showy flowers can literally dwarf the miniature
size of the plant and pseudobulbs. We’ve found that this little species is amazingly
easy to grow & flower under Phalaenopsis conditions. The leaves will drop in the fall after flowering, at which point we reduce watering & fertilizing
through the winter, but we do recommend keeping the medium damp to
avoid shriveling its pseudobulbs. With the onset of new growth in the spring, we resume normal watering/fertilizing. This species does not like to be repotted with any great frequency so we wait until new growths are literally overflowing the pot to shift them up to the next larger size.

Clowesetum Rebecca Express ‘M’
(Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. expansum)
Easily grown under Phalaenopsis conditions, this is one outrageous new
green flowered hybrid mating the best of two worlds ~ the green of expansum enhanced by the frilly lip of Rebecca
Northen ! Its wonderful fragrance comes from both parents with Ctsm. Rebecca Northen, which smells like grapefruit, combined with the sweet fragrance of Ctsm. expansum. Allow them to dry
slightly between waterings while in active growth & flowering. After they’ve lost their leaves & have finished flowering, reduce water & fertilizer, keeping the medium just damp enough to avoid
shriveling of their pseudobulbs. At the onset of new growth, accompanied by new roots, resume normal watering & fertilizing. One of the most exotic of
exotics !

Fredclarkeara After Dark
’Sunset Valley Orchids’ FCC/AOS
(Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. Donna Wise)
Easily grown under Phalaenopsis conditions, this particular clone of
Fredclarkeara After Dark produces tawny green flowers, heavily spotted maroon over all ! Its heavy substance flowers
with a waxy texture lead to a long-lasting display. In 2005 this plant was the
recipient of the Merritt W. Huntington Award as the most outstanding plant that
had been granted an FCC/AOS. When awarded with its FCC, it was vigorously displaying 48 flowers on three pendant inflorescences, all emerging from just one pseudobulb ! A great exhibit plant and a stunner when in flower. These
plants are now just completing their new leafy growths in preparation for
fall/winter flowering.
Of special note: We shifted our exhibit plants of Fredclarkeara into New Zealand
moss as an experiment to keep the deciduous growths plump & have noted that its even moisture supply helps keep the older pseudobulbs from desiccating while giving increased vigor to the new growths. We have since moved all our
stock of this type into NZ Moss & they’re happily thriving !

Habenaria carnea
(‘Mem. Ruffles’ AM/AOS x outcross)
(Species)
Endemic to Thailand, this charming soft pink to salmon Habenaria also has
dramatically spotted leaves, adding to its charm even when not in flower ! This particular sibbing was bred by Leon
Glicenstein for its fuller form & larger flowers. Blooming begins in late summer
with its terminal upright inflorescence carrying up to 15 wide-lip flowers per
leafed-out corm or tuber. Flower size can reach up to 2” on a fully mature growth making it quite showy. A warm grower under Phalaenopsis conditions, follow
our culture suggestions (included) for all Habenarias, & you’ll be amazed how easy
they are to grow & flower !

Hawkinsara Sogo Doll
’Little Angel’ HCC/AOS
(Lctna. Peggy San x Slc. Katsy Noda)
This is one of the very best of peloric miniature Cattleyas for its perfect mirror of the lip in its petals ~ or its petals to its
lip ! Capable of producing 3+ tri-color 2 ½” flowers on each upright
inflorescence, it makes for a long-lasting display due to their firm substance. One of our all-time favorites for peloric/splash

Maxillaria tenuifolia
‘Yamada’ AM/AOS
(Yellow form of Species)
The beloved ‘Coconut Orchid’, aptly named for its coconut fragrance, in the
more rare rich yellow form ! A compact grower, it can become a specimen in a short period of time due to its ease of
growth. And its grasslike foliage makes it attractive, even when not in flower. A May – July bloomer, these plants have
just matured their new growths & are now producing their flowers from spikes
which emerge from the base of each new pseudobulb. Keep them moist enough to
maintain their plump pseudobulbs & grow under high Phalaenopsis light. Reduce watering & fertilizing slightly
during the winter. Adaptable to a generous range of growing conditions, this is one easy-grower that belongs in
every collection !

Onc. Sweet Sugar
‘Lemon Drop’ HCC/AOS
(now Oncidesa)
(Aloha Iwanaga x Gomesa varicosa)
This is our favorite clone of this hybrid for its concolor electric yellow flowers,
with no other color in the lip, which makes it infinitely more stunning than
other clones of this hybrid ! Capable of producing over sixty flowers & buds with
huge bold 2 ¼” lips on vigorous multi-branching spikes, its heavy substance
satiny flowers provide a long-lasting and amazingly floriferous display. Although its vivid lip is outstanding, we also love
the subtle contrast of its small green petals & sepals. Add to all of that, the plants themselves produce beautiful
round pseudobulbs with very compact leaves standing around 9” tall. We’ve
actually had one plant of this clone last beautifully through two rigorous months of show exhibits & still look as fresh as
the day it opened. This is a true standout to add to any collection !

A remake of this amazing miniature/compact Cattleya using
improved select parents ! These are from the breeding program of Sunset Valley Orchids & promise to show a beautiful
variation in the patterning of their flares with beautifully round petals & varying
base colors on their sepals. These photos are the first to flower by Fred from this cross. We’re guessing there will be
many awards to this remake !

Rlc. Chian-Tzy Goldenorange
’Goldenboy’
(Rlc. Sweet Sugar x C. acuensis)
Another one of our favorites in miniature Cattleyas for its bold contrast
of a golden yellow lip against its rich orange flowers ! These charmers tend to
flower 2-3 times year on each newly maturing growth, producing adorable
little bouquets of up to four 1 ½” flowers on each spike, their flowers being
amazingly large in proportion to the miniature size of the plant. Multiple
flowering spikes on a well-grown plant can actually totally hide the foliage !

Thecopus maingayi
(MINIATURE Species)
Endemic to Thailand, Malaysia,
Vietnam & Borneo, this miniature species is just one of two in this genus ! A
hot/warm growing, shade-loving species, found growing in lowland stream valleys, it’s very happy growing under the same
conditions as Phalaenopsis ! Its 1” waxy flowers appear from summer to fall on inflorescences arising from the base of each pseudobulb, each cascading spike being up to 5” long & bearing up to 10
flowers on each. After flowering, if all the leaves drop off, reduce watering &
fertilizing, doing just enough to keep the flattened pseudobulbs plump. At the onset of new growth with bright new roots in the spring, resume normal
watering & fertilizing. A unique addition to any miniature species collection !

Wilhelmara Pinot Princess
’Scary’
(Rhynchostele bictoniensis x Bratonia Kauai’s Choice)
A great new hybrid combining one of our most favorite “black” Brassia-type
hybrids (Bratonia Kauai’s Choice) with a species parent which is famous for its floriferousness ! Producing the same
dark, almost black, flowers as Bratonia Kauai’s Choice, this hybrid sports a
brilliant red lip as opposed to the white lip of Kauai’s Choice. This hybrid shows off with eye-catching waxy 4-5” flowers, unique not only for their almost-black
sepals & petals but also for the surprise of their dramatically contrasting red lips.
A new favorite of ours !
(NOTE: Although the petals & sepals
appear brown in this photo, they are actually a blackened burgundy)

Zed. Kukoo
(Zelenkoa onusta x Onc. cheirophorum) We just love this newest petite micro-
miniature find from the Oncidium family ! As a primary intergeneric hybrid of two
perfectly delightful miniature species, it’s capable of producing a multitude of small
bright yellow flowers on arching, often branching, spikes over its micro-
miniature foliage, the foliage being no more than 3-4” in height. This little
charmer is infinitely easier to grow than its species parentage & flowers any time
of the year, at least twice a year as its new growths mature. A delightfully
adorable little accent orchid, perfect for windowsill, space-challenged or under
lights growing !
