A letter from Lee

Hi everyone, It is hard to believe we are in the month of September. September is filled with fun past times to engage in. Of course, we will all be rooting out team, the Buffalo Bills to victory this season. September also brings Assisted Living week. This years theme is Compassion, Community and Caring and is our chance to celebrate all the people that make Orchard Heights such a special place. This years festivities will include filling and decorating donuts, a staff chalk walk, the creation of a community hearts and hands mural, making gifts for our friends at Hillcrest fires department.

This will all take place the week of September 12-17. Our outings this month will include a driving tour of Buffalo, taking a walk at Bird song and rides for ice cream. Our mini concerts will include: Mark Swarts, Roger Rainville, multi instrumentalist Brian Beaudry, the ever popular Peter Van Scozza on violin. Other special programs will include Karaoke with Jen, a teacher appreciation social and Scrabble with Arlene.

Enjoy the cooler temps! Lee

• Rainbows can only happen in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is 40degrees or less above the horizon.

• Men can read smaller print than women. Women can hear better.

• Tigers skin is actually striped. Just like their fur. Also no two fur patterns are alike • German chocolate cake doesn’t come from Germany. It was named for a person, Sam German, who

created a type of baking chocolate for Baker’s in 1852. (npr.org)

• The first footprints on the moon will remain there for a million years.

• You lose up to 30 percent of your taste buds during flight.

• The "M's" in M&Ms stand for "Mars" and "Murrie." That would be Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie, the two

businessmen who created the candy-coated chocolates

• Cotton candy was invented by a dentist. It is not known whether William Morrison had an ulterior motive

for inventing the soft confection, but the dentist no doubt helped ensure others in his profession continued

drawing in plenty of customers.

Reliable by Nature

In 1870, former U.S. Representative and Civil War officer Henry Washburn led an expedition down the Yellowstone River to explore and survey a remote region of northwest Wyoming. Washburn’s party was the first to map the area, explore its many lakes, and climb its mountains. What awed the explorers most were the many boiling and steaming thermal features of the region. One geyser fas-cinated them most of all. On September 18, 1870, the party realized that it would reliably erupt 100 feet into the air every 74 minutes. Washburn himself dubbed the geyser “Old Faithful.” This

famous geyser would help make Yellowstone America’s first national park in 1872.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Alicia Hein to the position of Assistant Director of Nursing. Alicia started at Orchard Heights on July 10, 2015 as a Personal Care Aide on Harmony Lane.
