Jack Cook 1922-2013 ORMTA Honorary Life Member

by Amy Boyes, Assistant Editor

It was with great sadness that the music community of Ottawa said goodbye to Jack Cook. His life accomplishments paint a picture of man almost most larger than life. He was an RCMP officer, professional singer, music teacher, store owner, supporter and promoter of the arts, pilot, flying instructor, father, grand-father and great grandfather.

He is remembered fondly within the ORMTA commu-nity. Past-presidents Edith Orton and Gloria Jean Nagy recall Jack as "a gracious, gallant host, loved by all musicians who knew him" and a man with a "generous nature who will be missed." Jack’s Obituary may be read on the Ottawa Citizen's website Read his interview with Gloria Jean Nagy on Page 3 of the November 2012 issue of the ORBit http://issuu.com/ormtaorb/docs/newsletter_nov2012

ORMTA Student Membership Pilot Project by Kimberley Sundell, U of O Student Membership Liaison

Kimberley Sundell, Nicole Pachla, Lisa Szczepanski, Erin Dempsey, Grace Wong, Jillian Beacon and Ann Babin

An exciting new pilot project has just started in our Ottawa branch. After many years of discussion, the province has decided to open ORMTA membership to university students who are working towards their Bachelor of Music degrees. Not only is this a wonderful way to introduce future teachers to our organization, the students themselves get the important benefits of mem-bership. This year the project is starting off at the University of Ottawa School of Music. We are delighted to welcome

U of O students Nichole Pachla, Lisa Szczepanski, Erin Dempsey, Jillian Beacon and Grace Wong to ORMTA. Council members Kimberley Sundell and Ann Babin have bravely taken on designing and organizing this en-deavour, and we are so fortunate to have Prof. Gilles Comeau as our faculty advisor. We are very excited for the prospects of this project. Please be sure to welcome our new members at the Annual General Meeting in January.

Canada Music Week Recital by Tania Granata, Convenor

President and Convenor Tania Granata (third row left) and Canada Music Week Recital participants Wow! What a night! Resurrection Lutheran Church was packed with supportive family and friends on Sunday, November 24th for the 2013 Canada Music Week recital. The crowd was dazzled by 46 young musicians ranging in age from 6 to 23 featuring a variety of instruments: voice, harp and piano. We even had a few original compositions by Ottawa composers, always a real treat. The finale was a mixed media presentation with piano and voice called “Permanent Imaginations”. It was a huge crowd pleaser! Thanks to Colin Mack, Adam Kubelka and Nathalie Chrétien.

I want thank all the volunteers who helped organize the students and reception, those who brought items for the reception and those who helped with the cleanup. I am so grateful for your help! All the participants received a certificate of participation and First Vice-President Olivia Riddell helped hand out the “Obama” cookies to all the performers. This has become a small tradition! Not to be left out, there were some music trivia games with Canadian-themed prizes for the audience members. All in all another successful ORMTA event!

Saturday, March 1: Jenny Regehr Piano Workshop and Master Class Studio of Carol A. Wood, 3025 Linton Road, Ottawa

Jenny Regehr is well-known across Canada for her solo recitals, duo and chamber music performances and Lieder collaborations. She performs with many of Canada’s leading musicians in universities and concert series across the country. She has been heard regularly on national radio.

Ms. Regehr is a senior piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations. She has performed and taught at summer music festivals in Canada, the United States and Italy. More recently, her work has taken her to Asia where she was on an international panel of adjudicators at the prestigious Hong Kong schools music festival. The topic for the Workshop is: From Harpsichord to Piano “How the piano’s evolution is relevant to every piece we play today.”

A Piano Master Class will take place in the afternoon.

Saturday, March 8: Donna Klimoska Vocal Workshop and Master Class Studio of Carol A. Wood, 3025 Linton Road, Ottawa Donna Klimoska is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in voice and earned a Master's Degree in 1966. Besides concer-tizing widely, she began to teach in Quito, Ecuador, where she lived with her young family for a number of years. Her sojourn to Ecuador led to a musical collaboration with German classical guitarist Wolfgang Lendle. As a result of the musical partnership, a CD of beautiful Spanish songs with guitar accompaniment was recorded and is entitled “En las Puertas de Guápulo.”

On her return to North America and Ottawa, Donna pursued her career as a mezzo-soprano and voice teacher. She has performed mezzo roles in Quebec City and Ottawa, such as Berta in the Rossini’s The Barber of

Seville. Donna has frequently been heard on the CBC Program “Mélodie” and has toured with Glebe St. James United Church Choir as a soloist to Boston. Her Voice Studio is located in her Fifth Avenue home in the Glebe. In a morning Workshop, which Donna will offer, techniques of the Alexander Method and Tai Chi movement will be included in demonstration. Master Class participants will be models for the demonstration. In the afternoon Master Class, Donna will incorporate techniques which had been presented in the Workshop as well as working interpretively with the singers. Tania Granata will be at the piano.

Further Information: Observers are welcome to attend both the Piano

Workshop and Master Class as well as the Vocal Workshop and Master Class.

Both the Piano and Vocal Workshops and Master
