From the Rabbi….
Each summer I serve on the educational faculty at URJ Camp Harlam. While working with rising 10th graders this summer, we discussed what it means to be an authentic Jew.
Often, when I ask this question people respond with an ideal to strive toward that looks more like Chabad then Reform. This was not the case at camp. These young adults felt completely secure in their Jewish identities. They attributed this to their time spent at camp. Research has shown that spending just one summer in a Jewish residential summer camp is enough to have a lifelong positive impact on Jewish involvement.
When you are at camp you experience Judaism in a way that is “all in.” You climb the tower and learn that it was ometz lev, courage, which was shown. You help a friend on a rough day showing rachamim, kindness and compassion. Counselors are dynamic, full of spirit and “all in.” At camp, they reaffirm their own Jewish identities, serving as role models. They get everyone on their feet, during song session with intense ruach – spirit and joy – that is as “all in” as you can be. During worship, you feel “all in” while being swept up in the melodies of prayer. Jewish values, traditions and culture are woven into every aspect of camp. You can’t help but be “all in,” which we know has a profound impact on the positive role Judaism plays in the lives of our youth.
As we prepare to enter the year 5778 I am asking you to be “all in” here at Temple B’nai Or. Our Adult Opportunities brochure, features many ways to get involved. Come hear a speaker, attend a class, view art in the gallery, study Torah. Join an auxiliary group. Come to services. It doesn’t have to be every week, but there is something very powerful about starting Shabbat as a community, praying together in song. As the New Year approaches let’s make the conscious choice to be “all in” at Temple so that we too can experience the profound impact and positive role Judaism can play in our lives.

From the Cantor…
Every year our tradition invites us to go on a spiritual journey. From the beginning of the month of Elul, until Rosh Hashanah we are to venture inward, to introspect, to account for our souls – Cheshbon Nefesh — so that ultimately, we can do a Tikkun – a fixing; to realize the potential of our highest selves. Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we delve more profoundly into Teshuva – returning to our purest selves. We return by taking small steps in the right direction. When the Shofar blows at the end of Yom Kippur we will emerge at our full potential self.
I have become accustomed to a special symbolism attached to writing on Teshuva during the time of 9 b’Av - the holiday commemorating the destruction of the holy Temples in Jerusalem. Most liberal Jews do not mourn this loss, because it is far removed from us, and because we have reconciled with no longer yearning to build a third Temple in Jerusalem.
However, progressive organizations in Israel take this traditional period of weeping and mourning to look at the current brokenness in our society and to grapple with meaningful issues worthy of our tears. Our tradition tells us the Temple was destroyed, not because of our enemies, but because of hate within our own people. Recent political developments at the Kotel have brought forth grave questions asking who we are as a people, and perhaps harder questions: Are we all one people?
Disagreement and debate have always been part of our evolution and definition as a people. I pray that we continue to engage in this discussion, stay informed and fight for the things that we feel passionately about. I hope that we bring each and every one of our voices to the table and make it count.
Cantor Galit Dadoun Cohen
From the President…
I wish I was sitting here writing this article feeling ready to kick off the New Year but instead I am still reeling from what I saw in Charlottesville, Virginia, and continue to read in the news. Now more than ever, it is important to have a thriving synagogue to provide support and a spiritual home for us all.
September is a time of enormous energy at Temple. The building is filled with the sounds of the kids coming back to Pre-School and Hebrew School. The clergy and staff are in high gear preparing for the high holy days. The calendar is full of events and celebrations for the coming year, including the rededication of our beautiful, ADA-compliant sanctuary.
While much has been accomplished there is still a lot of work to do. Our world can be a scary place, and as Jews, we want to feel safe and protected. Thank you once again, to all who contributed to the call for assistance in funding our security guard for the second half of last year. I hope everyone will remember what we are all witnessing right now, and continue with your support as we review and refine our safety procedures.
Another thank you to the 44% of the congregation that took the time to complete the congregational survey this spring. The data has been returned to us and a mentor has been assigned from the URJ to help us sort through the feedback, and share the results and an action plan. Stay tuned…
Finally, the financial stability of our temple is of paramount importance for us to be able to fulfill our mission to enrich the Jewish community in the greater Morristown area with a synagogue that connects our traditions to contemporary life. Thank you for your membership and support – in kind and in deed.
L’shanah tovah – a happy and healthier new year to you and for our world

From the Religious School…
The school year always begins with the freshness of starting anew – whether you are returning, or if you are coming to the Joel & Helen Jacobs Religious School for the first time. Our hope is for all the students to flourish here both academically and spiritually. I believe that we are more of a “Jewish” School than a “Religious” School. Our goal is to give each of our boys and girls a sense of what it means to be Jewish and to live a Jewish life in a modern, advanced world. We want each one to experience Jewish faith, understand Jewish history, and feel a connection to the Jewish people. If we are successful, these kids have a full appreciation of how they fit in to an incredible 3000 year history, and how they can embrace their personal Jewishness. Temple B’nai Or is a community of Jewish families wanting to insure their children will be part of the legacy of the Jewish people. We hope our parents will partner with us in this journey, and will help energize their children by actively participating in Temple life – in Jewish life. It will be a truly special year of learning for all. Wishing everyone a Shana Tovah – a happy, healthy and meaningful 5778. David Iskovitz, Director of Education

THE IMPORTANCE OF JUDAICA We like to surround ourselves with beautiful things from pillows and rugs to art work. Our home furnishings reflect who we are and how we find comfort. That is the reason we need Judaica. Beyond candlesticks and mezzuzot, Judaica has a long and rich cultural history. It displays who we are and runs the gamut from elaborate to kitsch. Most of our items are utilitarian but some are purely fun. Judaica shows our children who they are. Do you own a shofar? An havdalah set? A challah or matzah cover?
Our shop is one small place in the retail world that surrounds our children with items specific to them - not to Halloween, St. Valentine's Day or Christmas. A yad does more than point to words in the Torah. It points out the pride you have in having read the Torah. There are symbols unique to our culture; a hamsa, a pomegrante, a chai, and even our stars. Our tradition of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) begins with a tzedakah box. Before lighting candles on a Friday night, or after a good phone call, drop a few pennies into the box and at year's end, donate
that money to the Soup Kitchen, or your favorite charity. We teach our children through our actions. Our culture is varied and beautiful. Stop in the shop - we're open during Religious School hours. See what's new - or old. Take pride in our shared heritage and support our Temple. Shalom Y'all,

Begin the High Holy Day Season in a Meaningful Way
Feed the Community Feed Ourselves Feed our Souls
Saturday, September 16th at 5pm Feed the Community There is no better way to celebrate our newly renovated kitchen than by using it to do a mitzvah. We will make a meal to donate to the Market Street Mission.
Feed Ourselves Enjoy a pasta and salad meal with our Temple family. No night would be complete without delicious desserts.
Feed our Souls Our family friendly S’lichot service will begin following dessert. Come together in prayer and song to begin the Days of Awe. Together, we will dress our Torahs in the traditional white covers symbolizing the High Holy Days. We welcome everyone from the youngest hands to the oldest hands.
RSVP’s are required, including what ingredients families can contribute to our community meal. Please RSVP to Audrey Forman at [email protected] by Monday, September 8th.
