Talking about rooftop solar in Thailand: the announced program does not provide for FIT
A rooftop solar plant today serves the energy
needs and competes with regular electricity pricing
1) A feed-in-tariff project generates
returns but doen‘t reduce costs
Available space is utilised at a maximum
Every kWh produced is sold to the grid
Pay back time is around 5 years
Double digit returns can be achieved
The host of the rooftop plant still purchases
power from the grid
2) A self-consumption project saves
immediately on the energy bill
Available space is utilised according to demand
Every kWh of clean energy is being used on site
Pay back time is around 6-7 years
Savings accumulate and provide double digit

The power plant owner reduces its energy bill and
becomes more independent

A comparison that works out well:
Solar energy can compete with power from the grid
Grid parity has been achieved
The cost of electricity will increase eventually whereas the cost
of generating power from the sun has decreased significantly
over time beating the average price of power of ~ 4 THB/kWh

But how to size the right system?
Analysing and understanding the individual load
A rooftop solar power plant should work against the energy bill and suit the
customer needs.
1. Retrieve the consumption data on a high resolution and check the existing energy bill
2. Generate a production profile based on the local irradiation and circumstances on the same resolution
Example of a cold storage company
Energy demand: 10,067,962 kWh/year
Current electricity price: ~ 4 THB/kWh

2 Main Business Models
Self investment model: ROI 5-6 years, O&M
requirements, EPC must be realiable
PPA model: 15-25 years contract, typically 10-15%
discount, immediate savings

the sun as their supplier in Thailand
Cost savings: Producing power yourself and using it instantly is more economical than purchasing a
standard power mix from the grid
Independence: You become more independent from power price developments
Planning security: You freeze part of your energy costs at a low level for approx. 25 years. After
break even only marginal maintenance costs occur. The sun does not bill
No excess energy: We design the individual system the way that is does not export power to the grid
CO2 savings: You improve your carbon footprint and protect the planet
Reputation: You can market your efforts to protect the environment and to provide clean energy to
your company
