Ways to UseTHE ONE YEAR BIBLE

The One Year Bible is divided into daily readings. For each day there is a portion ofthe Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs,* and each day’s read-ing contains a boldfaced passage that can be memorized as a thought for the day.The four separate daily readings are grouped on consecutive pages, giving freshnessand diversity to each day’s reading. This also makes it easy to use The One Year Biblein a variety of ways.

The One Year Bible has led millions of readers through the Bible in one year. Itsarrangement, however, is equally useful for guiding a reader through the Bible intwo, or even three, years. If you feel too rushed or want to spend more time on eachday’s selections, here are a few other suggested reading plans:

The Revised One-Year Plan. Schedule some time in both the morning and evening.Then read the New Testament and Psalms selections in the morning and the OldTestament and Proverbs selections in the evening.

The Two-Year Plan. During the first year, just read the Old Testament and Proverbsselections. Then during the second year, read the selections from the New Testa-ment and Psalms.

The Three-Year Plan. Read the Old Testament selection the first year, the NewTestament selection the second year, and the Psalms and Proverbs selections duringthe third year.

Words of Praise and Wisdom in One Year. Read the Psalms and Proverbs selec-tions for each day. This will take you through the Psalms twice and Proverbs onceduring the year, giving you words of praise and wisdom to live by each day.

You need not limit yourself to these suggested plans. The arrangement of The OneYear Bible makes it easy to devise any number of Bible reading plans to meet yourparticular needs.

*Since the Proverbs readings are always short, they have been printed in a non-standard format, and theverse numbers have been dropped. If a small box appears within a reading, it represents a paragraph break.

The Translators of the Bible wish Grace, Mercy, and Peace

through JESUS CHRIST our Lord

GREAT and manifold were the blessings, most dread Sovereign, which Almighty God, the Fatherof all mercies, bestowed upon us the people of England, when first he sent Your Majesty’s RoyalPerson to rule and reign over us. For whereas it was the expectation of many, who wished not wellunto our Sion, that upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star, Queen Elizabeth of mosthappy memory, some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed thisLand, that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk; and that it should hardlybe known, who was to direct the unsettled State; the appearance of Your Majesty, as of the Sun inhis strength, instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists, and gave unto all that werewell affected exceeding cause of comfort; especially when we beheld the Government estab-lished in Your Highness, and Your hopeful Seed, by an undoubted Title, and this also accompa-nied with peace and tranquility at home and abroad.

But among all our joys, there was no one that more filled our hearts, than the blessed continu-ance of the preaching of God’s sacred Word among us; which is that inestimable treasure, whichexcelleth all the riches of the earth; because the fruit thereof extendeth itself, not only to the timespent in this transitory world, but directeth and disposeth men unto that eternal happinesswhich is above in heaven.

Then not to suffer this to fall to the ground, but rather to take it up, and to continue it in thatstate, wherein the famous Predecessor of Your Highness did leave it: nay, to go forward with theconfidence and resolution of a Man in maintaining the truth of Christ, and propagating it far andnear, is that which hath so bound and firmly knit the hearts of all Your Majesty’s loyal and reli-gious people unto You, that Your very name is precious among them: their eye doth behold Youwith comfort, and they bless You in their hearts, as that sanctified Person who, under God, is theimmediate Author of their true happiness. And this their contentment doth not diminish or de-cay, but every day increaseth and taketh strength, when they observe, that the zeal of Your Ma-jesty toward the house of God doth not slack or go backward, but is more and more kindled,manifesting itself abroad in the farthest parts of Christendom, by writing in defence of the Truth,(which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin, as will not be healed,) and every day at home,by religious and learned discourse, by frequenting the house of God, by hearing the Word

preached, by cherishing the Teachers thereof, by caring for the Church, as a most tender and lov-ing nursing Father.

There are infinite arguments of this right Christian and religious affection in Your Majesty; butnone is more forcible to declare it to others than the vehement and perpetuated desire of accom-plishing and publishing of this work, which now with all humility we present unto Your Majesty.For when Your Highness had once out of deep judgment apprehended how convenient it was,that out of the Original Sacred Tongues, together with comparing of the labours, both in our own,and other foreign Languages, of many worthy men who went before us, there should be one moreexact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English Tongue; Your Majesty did never desist tourge and to excite those to whom it was commended, that the work might be hastened, and thatthe business might be expedited in so decent a manner, as a matter of such importance mightjustly require.

And now at last, by the mercy ofGod, and the continuance ofour labours, it being brought untosuch a conclusion, as that we have great hopes that the Church of England shall reap good fruitthereby; we hold it our duty to offer it to Your Majesty, not only as to our King and Sovereign, butas to the principal Mover and Author of the work: humbly craving of Your most Sacred Majesty,that since things of this quality have ever been subject to the censures of ill-meaning and discon-tented persons, it may receive approbation and patronage from so learned and judicious a Princeas Your Highness is, whose allowance and acceptance of our labours shall more honour and en-courage us, than all the calumniations and hard interpretations of other men shall dismay us. Sothat if, on the one side, we shall be traduced by Popish Persons at home or abroad, who thereforewill malign us, because we are poor instruments to make God’s holy Truth to be yet more andmore known unto the people, whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness; or if, onthe other side, we shall be maligned by self-conceited Brethren, who run their own ways, and giveliking unto nothing, but what is framed by themselves, and hammered on their anvil; we may restsecure, supported within by the truth and innocency of a good conscience, having walked theways of simplicity and integrity, as before the Lord; and sustained without by the powerful pro-tection of Your Majesty’s grace and favour, which will ever give countenance to honest and Chris-tian endeavours against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations.

The Lord of heaven and earth bless Your Majesty with many and happy days, that, as his heav-enly hand hath enriched Your Highness with many singular and extraordinary graces, so You maybe the wonder of the world in this latter age for happiness and true felicity, to the honour of thatgreat GOD, and the good of his Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour.

11The name of the first is Pison: that isit which compasseth the whole land ofHavilah, where there is gold;

12And the gold of that land is good:there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

19Then Joseph her husband, being ajust man, and not willing to make her apublick example, was minded to put heraway privily.

20But while he thought on thesethings, behold, the angel of the Lordappeared unto him in a dream, saying,Joseph, thou son of David, fear not totake unto thee Mary thy wife: for thatwhich is conceived in her is of the HolyGhost.

21And she shall bring forth a son, andthou shalt call his name JESUS: for heshall save his people from their sins.

22Now all this was done, that it mightbe fulfilled which was spoken of theLord by the prophet, saying,

23Behold, a virgin shall be with child,and shall bring forth a son, and theyshall call his name Emmanuel, whichbeing interpreted is, God with us.

24Then Joseph being raised fromsleep did as the angel of the Lord hadbidden him, and took unto him his wife:

3 When Herod the king had heardthese things, he was troubled, and all Je-rusalem with him.

4And when he had gathered all thechief priests and scribes of the peopletogether, he demanded of them whereChrist should be born.

5And they said unto him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea: for thus it is written bythe prophet,

6And thou Bethlehem, in the land ofJudah, art not the least among the princesof Judah: for out of thee shall come a Gov-ernor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7Then Herod, when he had privilycalled the wise men, inquired of themdiligently what time the star appeared.

8And he sent them to Bethlehem, andsaid, Go and search diligently for theyoung child; and when ye have foundhim, bring me word again, that I maycome and worship him also.

9When they had heard the king, theydeparted; and, lo, the star, which theysaw in the east, went before them, till itcame and stood over where the youngchild was.

10When they saw the star, they re-joiced with exceeding great joy.

11And when they were come into thehouse, they saw the young child withMary his mother, and fell down, andworshipped him: and when they hadopened their treasures, they presentedunto him gifts; gold, and frankincense,and myrrh.

12And being warned of God in adream that they should not return toHerod, they departed into their owncountry another way.

11And he said, Who told thee thatthou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of thetree, whereof I commanded thee thatthou shouldest not eat?

12And the man said, The womanwhom thou gavest to be with me, shegave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13And the Lord God said unto thewoman, What is this that thou hastdone? And the woman said, The serpentbeguiled me, and I did eat.

14And the Lord God said unto theserpent, Because thou hast done this,thou art cursed above all cattle, andabove every beast of the field; upon thybelly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thoueat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between theeand the woman, and between thy seedand her seed; it shall bruise thy head, andthou shalt bruise his heel.

16Unto the woman he said, I willgreatly multiply thy sorrow and thyconception; in sorrow thou shalt bringforth children; and thy desire shall beto thy husband, and he shall rule overthee.

17And unto Adam he said, Becausethou hast hearkened unto the voice ofthy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, ofwhich I commanded thee, saying, Thoushalt not eat of it: cursed is the groundfor thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of itall the days of thy life;

18Thorns also and thistles shall itbring forth to thee; and thou shalt eatthe herb of the field;

19In the sweat of thy face shalt thoueat bread, till thou return unto theground; for out of it wast thou taken: fordust thou art, and unto dust shalt thoureturn.

23Therefore the Lord God sent himforth from the garden of Eden, to till theground from whence he was taken.

11And now art thou cursed from theearth, which hath opened her mouth toreceive thy brother’s blood from thyhand;

13And Cain said unto the Lord, Mypunishment is greater than I can bear.

14Behold, thou hast driven me outthis day from the face of the earth; andfrom thy face shall I be hid; and I shallbe a fugitive and a vagabond in theearth; and it shall come to pass, thatevery one that findeth me shall slay me.

15And the Lord said unto him, There-fore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeanceshall be taken on him sevenfold. Andthe Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest anyfinding him should kill him.

16And Cain went out from the pres-ence of the Lord, and dwelt in the landof Nod, on the east of Eden.

17And Cain knew his wife; and sheconceived, and bare Enoch: and he

24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25And Adam knew his wife again; andshe bare a son, and called his name Seth:For God, said she, hath appointed meanother seed instead of Abel, whomCain slew.

26And to Seth, to him also there wasborn a son; and he called his name Enos:then began men to call upon the nameof the Lord.

3Let us break their bands asunder,and cast away their cords from us.

4He that sitteth in the heavens shalllaugh: the Lord shall have them in deri-sion.

5 Then shall he speak unto them inhis wrath, and vex them in his sore dis-pleasure.

6Yet have I set my king upon my holyhill of Zion.

7I will declare the decree: the Lord

hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; thisday have I begotten thee.

8Ask of me, and I shall give thee theheathen for thine inheritance, and theuttermost parts of the earth for thy pos-session.

9Thou shalt break them with a rod ofiron; thou shalt dash them in pieces likea potter’s vessel.

16A window shalt thou make to theark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it

3And the waters returned from offthe earth continually: and after the endof the hundred and fifty days the waterswere abated.

4And the ark rested in the seventhmonth, on the seventeenth day of themonth, upon the mountains of Ararat.

5And the waters decreased continu-ally until the tenth month: in the tenthmonth, on the first day of the month,were the tops of the mountains seen.

6And it came to pass at the end offorty days, that Noah opened the win-dow of the ark which he had made:

7And he sent forth a raven, whichwent forth to and fro, until the waterswere dried up from off the earth.

8Also he sent forth a dove from him,to see if the waters were abated from offthe face of the ground;

wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wiveswith thee.

17Bring forth with thee every livingthing that is with thee, of all flesh, bothof fowl, and of cattle, and of every creep-ing thing that creepeth upon the earth;that they may breed abundantly in theearth, and be fruitful, and multiplyupon the earth.

19Every beast, every creeping thing,and every fowl, and whatsoever creepethupon the earth, after their kinds, wentforth out of the ark.

20And Noah builded an altar unto theLord; and took of every clean beast, andof every clean fowl, and offered burntofferings on the altar.

21And the Lord smelled a sweet sa-vour; and the Lord said in his heart, Iwill not again curse the ground anymore for man’s sake; for the imaginationof man’s heart is evil from his youth; nei-ther will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done.

15And I will remember my covenant,which is between me and you and everyliving creature of all flesh; and the wa-ters shall no more become a flood to de-stroy all flesh.

member the everlasting covenant be-tween God and every living creature ofall flesh that is upon the earth.

17And God said unto Noah, This is thetoken of the covenant, which I have es-tablished between me and all flesh thatis upon the earth.

18And the sons of Noah, that wentforth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham,and Japheth: and Ham is the father ofCanaan.

14And the Lord said unto Abram, afterthat Lot was separated from him, Lift upnow thine eyes, and look from the placewhere thou art northward, and south-ward, and eastward, and westward:

15For all the land which thou seest, tothee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

16And I will make thy seed as the dustof the earth: so that if a man can numberthe dust of the earth, then shall thy seedalso be numbered.

17Arise, walk through the land in thelength of it and in the breadth of it; for Iwill give it unto thee.

18Then Abram removed his tent, andcame and dwelt in the plain of Mamre,which is in Hebron, and built there analtar unto the Lord.14:1And it came to pass in the days ofAmraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king ofEllasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, andTidal king of nations;

2That these made war with Bera kingof Sodom, and with Birsha king of Go-morrah, Shinab king of Admah, andShemeber king of Zeboiim, and the kingof Bela, which is Zoar.

3All these were joined together in thevale of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.

4Twelve years they served Chedor-laomer, and in the thirteenth year theyrebelled.

5And in the fourteenth year cameChedorlaomer, and the kings that werewith him, and smote the Rephaims inAshteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims inHam, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiria-thaim,

6And the Horites in their mount Seir,unto El-paran, which is by the wilder-ness.
