Ways to UseTHE ONE YEAR BIBLE

The One Year Bible is divided into daily readings. For each day there is a portion ofthe Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs,* and each day’s read-ing contains a boldfaced passage that can be memorized as a thought for the day.The four separate daily readings are grouped on consecutive pages, giving freshnessand diversity to each day’s reading. This also makes it easy to use The One Year Biblein a variety of ways.

The One Year Bible has led millions of readers through the Bible in one year. Itsarrangement, however, is equally useful for guiding a reader through the Bible intwo, or even three, years. If you feel too rushed or want to spend more time on eachday’s selections, here are a few other suggested reading plans:

The Revised One-Year Plan. Schedule some time in both the morning and evening.Then read the New Testament and Psalms selections in the morning and the OldTestament and Proverbs selections in the evening.

The Two-Year Plan. During the first year, just read the Old Testament and Proverbsselections. Then during the second year, read the selections from the New Testa-ment and Psalms.

The Three-Year Plan. Read the Old Testament selection the first year, the NewTestament selection the second year, and the Psalms and Proverbs selections duringthe third year.

Words of Praise and Wisdom in One Year. Read the Psalms and Proverbs selec-tions for each day. This will take you through the Psalms twice and Proverbs onceduring the year, giving you words of praise and wisdom to live by each day.

You need not limit yourself to these suggested plans. The arrangement of The OneYear Bible makes it easy to devise any number of Bible reading plans to meet yourparticular needs.

*Since the Proverbs readings are always short, they have been printed in a non-standard format, and theverse numbers have been dropped. If a small box appears within a reading, it represents a paragraph break.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The One Year Bible has been prepared especially for regular Bible readers who wishto read through the entire Bible in one year.

Each day you will read a passage from the Old Testament and from the New Testa-ment, along with short selections from Psalms and Proverbs. This will give varietyand freshness to your daily reading.

Instead of following a Bible reading chart and experiencing the delay of turningfrom place to place, you will find the text here in sequence, ready for your quietreading and meditation. This fulfills our goal at Tyndale to make the Bible as acces-sible as possible for people no matter what their background or walk of life.

May this year and every year be enriched as you enjoy daily portions from God’sWord.

TO THE MOST HIGH AND MIGHTY PRINCE

JAMES

BY THE GRACE OF GOD

KING OF GREAT BRITAIN, FRANCE, AND IRELAND

DEFENDER OF THE FAITH, &c.

The Translators of the Bible wish Grace, Mercy, and Peace

through JESUS CHRIST our Lord

GREAT and manifold were the blessings, most dread Sovereign, which Almighty God, the Fatherof all mercies, bestowed upon us the people of England, when first he sent Your Majesty’s RoyalPerson to rule and reign over us. For whereas it was the expectation of many, who wished not wellunto our Sion, that upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star, Queen Elizabeth of mosthappy memory, some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed thisLand, that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk; and that it should hardlybe known, who was to direct the unsettled State; the appearance of Your Majesty, as of the Sun inhis strength, instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists, and gave unto all that werewell affected exceeding cause of comfort; especially when we beheld the Government estab-lished in Your Highness, and Your hopeful Seed, by an undoubted Title, and this also accompa-nied with peace and tranquility at home and abroad.

But among all our joys, there was no one that more filled our hearts, than the blessed continu-ance of the preaching of God’s sacred Word among us; which is that inestimable treasure, whichexcelleth all the riches of the earth; because the fruit thereof extendeth itself, not only to the timespent in this transitory world, but directeth and disposeth men unto that eternal happinesswhich is above in heaven.

Then not to suffer this to fall to the ground, but rather to take it up, and to continue it in thatstate, wherein the famous Predecessor of Your Highness did leave it: nay, to go forward with theconfidence and resolution of a Man in maintaining the truth of Christ, and propagating it far andnear, is that which hath so bound and firmly knit the hearts of all Your Majesty’s loyal and reli-gious people unto You, that Your very name is precious among them: their eye doth behold Youwith comfort, and they bless You in their hearts, as that sanctified Person who, under God, is theimmediate Author of their true happiness. And this their contentment doth not diminish or de-cay, but every day increaseth and taketh strength, when they observe, that the zeal of Your Ma-jesty toward the house of God doth not slack or go backward, but is more and more kindled,manifesting itself abroad in the farthest parts of Christendom, by writing in defence of the Truth,(which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin, as will not be healed,) and every day at home,by religious and learned discourse, by frequenting the house of God, by hearing the Word

preached, by cherishing the Teachers thereof, by caring for the Church, as a most tender and lov-ing nursing Father.

There are infinite arguments of this right Christian and religious affection in Your Majesty; butnone is more forcible to declare it to others than the vehement and perpetuated desire of accom-plishing and publishing of this work, which now with all humility we present unto Your Majesty.For when Your Highness had once out of deep judgment apprehended how convenient it was,that out of the Original Sacred Tongues, together with comparing of the labours, both in our own,and other foreign Languages, of many worthy men who went before us, there should be one moreexact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English Tongue; Your Majesty did never desist tourge and to excite those to whom it was commended, that the work might be hastened, and thatthe business might be expedited in so decent a manner, as a matter of such importance mightjustly require.

And now at last, by the mercy ofGod, and the continuance ofour labours, it being brought untosuch a conclusion, as that we have great hopes that the Church of England shall reap good fruitthereby; we hold it our duty to offer it to Your Majesty, not only as to our King and Sovereign, butas to the principal Mover and Author of the work: humbly craving of Your most Sacred Majesty,that since things of this quality have ever been subject to the censures of ill-meaning and discon-tented persons, it may receive approbation and patronage from so learned and judicious a Princeas Your Highness is, whose allowance and acceptance of our labours shall more honour and en-courage us, than all the calumniations and hard interpretations of other men shall dismay us. Sothat if, on the one side, we shall be traduced by Popish Persons at home or abroad, who thereforewill malign us, because we are poor instruments to make God’s holy Truth to be yet more andmore known unto the people, whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness; or if, onthe other side, we shall be maligned by self-conceited Brethren, who run their own ways, and giveliking unto nothing, but what is framed by themselves, and hammered on their anvil; we may restsecure, supported within by the truth and innocency of a good conscience, having walked theways of simplicity and integrity, as before the Lord; and sustained without by the powerful pro-tection of Your Majesty’s grace and favour, which will ever give countenance to honest and Chris-tian endeavours against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations.

The Lord of heaven and earth bless Your Majesty with many and happy days, that, as his heav-enly hand hath enriched Your Highness with many singular and extraordinary graces, so You maybe the wonder of the world in this latter age for happiness and true felicity, to the honour of thatgreat GOD, and the good of his Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour.

JANUARY

1GENESIS 1:1–2:251In the beginning God created theheaven and the earth.

2And the earth was without form, andvoid; and darkness was upon the face ofthe deep. And the Spirit of God movedupon the face of the waters.

3And God said, Let there be light: andthere was light.

4And God saw the light, that it wasgood: and God divided the light fromthe darkness.

5And God called the light Day, andthe darkness he called Night. And theevening and the morning were the firstday.

6And God said, Let there be a firma-ment in the midst of the waters, and letit divide the waters from the waters.

7And God made the firmament, anddivided the waters which were under thefirmament from the waters which wereabove the firmament: and it was so.

8And God called the firmamentHeaven. And the evening and the morn-ing were the second day.

9And God said, Let the waters underthe heaven be gathered together untoone place, and let the dry land appear:and it was so.

10And God called the dry land Earth;and the gathering together of the waterscalled he Seas: and God saw that it wasgood.

11And God said, Let the earth bringforth grass, the herb yielding seed, andthe fruit tree yielding fruit after hiskind, whose seed is in itself, upon theearth: and it was so.

12And the earth brought forth grass,and herb yielding seed after his kind,and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed

was in itself, after his kind: and God sawthat it was good.

13And the evening and the morningwere the third day.

14And God said, Let there be lights inthe firmament of the heaven to dividethe day from the night; and let them befor signs, and for seasons, and for days,and years:

15And let them be for lights in the fir-mament of the heaven to give light uponthe earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; thegreater light to rule the day, and thelesser light to rule the night: he madethe stars also.

17And God set them in the firma-ment of the heaven to give light uponthe earth,

18And to rule over the day and over thenight, and to divide the light from thedarkness: and God saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morningwere the fourth day.

20And God said, Let the waters bringforth abundantly the moving creaturethat hath life, and fowl that may flyabove the earth in the open firmamentof heaven.

21And God created great whales, andevery living creature that moveth, whichthe waters brought forth abundantly,after their kind, and every winged fowlafter his kind: and God saw that it wasgood.

22And God blessed them, saying, Befruitful, and multiply, and fill the watersin the seas, and let fowl multiply in theearth.

23And the evening and the morningwere the fifth day.

24And God said, Let the earth bringforth the living creature after his kind,cattle, and creeping thing, and beast ofthe earth after his kind: and it was so.

25And God made the beast of the earthafter his kind, and cattle after their kind,and every thing that creepeth upon the

earth after his kind: and God saw that itwas good.

26And God said, Let us make man inour image, after our likeness: and letthem have dominion over the fish of thesea, and over the fowl of the air, and overthe cattle, and over all the earth, andover every creeping thing that creepethupon the earth.

27So God created man in his own im-age, in the image of God created he him;male and female created he them.

28And God blessed them, and Godsaid unto them, Be fruitful, and multi-ply, and replenish the earth, and subdueit: and have dominion over the fish ofthe sea, and over the fowl of the air, andover every living thing that movethupon the earth.

29And God said, Behold, I have givenyou every herb bearing seed, which isupon the face of all the earth, and everytree, in the which is the fruit of a treeyielding seed; to you it shall be formeat.

30And to every beast of the earth, andto every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth,wherein there is life, I have given everygreen herb for meat: and it was so.

31And God saw every thing that hehad made, and, behold, it was very good.And the evening and the morning werethe sixth day.2:1Thus the heavens and the earth werefinished, and all the host of them.

2And on the seventh day God endedhis work which he had made; and herested on the seventh day from all hiswork which he had made.

3And God blessed the seventh day,and sanctified it: because that in it hehad rested from all his work which Godcreated and made.

4These are the generations of theheavens and of the earth when theywere created, in the day that the Lord

God made the earth and the heavens,5And every plant of the field before it

was in the earth, and every herb of thefield before it grew: for the Lord God

had not caused it to rain upon the earth,and there was not a man to till theground.

6But there went up a mist from theearth, and watered the whole face of theground.

7And the Lord God formed man ofthe dust of the ground, and breathedinto his nostrils the breath of life; andman became a living soul.

8And the Lord God planted a gardeneastward in Eden; and there he put theman whom he had formed.

9And out of the ground made theLord God to grow every tree that ispleasant to the sight, and good for food;the tree of life also in the midst of thegarden, and the tree of knowledge ofgood and evil.

10And a river went out of Eden to wa-ter the garden; and from thence it wasparted, and became into four heads.

11The name of the first is Pison: that isit which compasseth the whole land ofHavilah, where there is gold;

12And the gold of that land is good:there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

13And the name of the second river isGihon: the same is it that compasseththe whole land of Ethiopia.

14And the name of the third river isHiddekel: that is it which goeth towardthe east of Assyria. And the fourth riveris Euphrates.

15And the Lord God took the man,and put him into the garden of Eden todress it and to keep it.

16And the Lord God commanded theman, saying, Of every tree of the gardenthou mayest freely eat:

17But of the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: forin the day that thou eatest thereof thoushalt surely die.

18And the Lord God said, It is notgood that the man should be alone; I willmake him an help meet for him.

19And out of the ground the Lord

God formed every beast of the field, andevery fowl of the air; and brought themunto Adam to see what he would callthem: and whatsoever Adam called

every living creature, that was the namethereof.

20And Adam gave names to all cattle,and to the fowl of the air, and to everybeast of the field; but for Adam therewas not found an help meet for him.

21And the Lord God caused a deepsleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept:and he took one of his ribs, and closedup the flesh instead thereof;

22And the rib, which the Lord Godhad taken from man, made he a woman,and brought her unto the man.

23And Adam said, This is now bone ofmy bones, and flesh of my flesh: sheshall be called Woman, because she wastaken out of Man.

24Therefore shall a man leave his fa-ther and his mother, and shall cleaveunto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25And they were both naked, the manand his wife, and were not ashamed.

MATTHEW 1:1–2:121The book of the generation of JesusChrist, the son of David, the son of Abra-ham.

2Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaacbegat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas andhis brethren;

3And Judas begat Phares and Zara ofThamar; and Phares begat Esrom; andEsrom begat Aram;

4And Aram begat Aminadab; andAminadab begat Naasson; and Naassonbegat Salmon;

5And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab;and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obedbegat Jesse;

6And Jesse begat David the king; andDavid the king begat Solomon of herthat had been the wife of Urias;

7And Solomon begat Roboam; andRoboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

8And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphatbegat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

9And Ozias begat Joatham; andJoatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begatEzekias;

10And Ezekias begat Manasses; andManasses begat Amon; and Amon begatJosias;

11And Josias begat Jechonias and hisbrethren, about the time they were car-ried away to Babylon:

12And after they were brought to Bab-ylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Sa-lathiel begat Zorobabel;

13And Zorobabel begat Abiud; andAbiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begatAzor;

14And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadocbegat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Elea-zar begat Matthan; and Matthan begatJacob;

16And Jacob begat Joseph the hus-band of Mary, of whom was born Jesus,who is called Christ.

17So all the generations from Abra-ham to David are fourteen generations;and from David until the carrying awayinto Babylon are fourteen generations;and from the carrying away into Babylonunto Christ are fourteen generations.

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ wason this wise: When as his mother Marywas espoused to Joseph, before theycame together, she was found with childof the Holy Ghost.

19Then Joseph her husband, being ajust man, and not willing to make her apublick example, was minded to put heraway privily.

20But while he thought on thesethings, behold, the angel of the Lordappeared unto him in a dream, saying,Joseph, thou son of David, fear not totake unto thee Mary thy wife: for thatwhich is conceived in her is of the HolyGhost.

21And she shall bring forth a son, andthou shalt call his name JESUS: for heshall save his people from their sins.

22Now all this was done, that it mightbe fulfilled which was spoken of theLord by the prophet, saying,

23Behold, a virgin shall be with child,and shall bring forth a son, and theyshall call his name Emmanuel, whichbeing interpreted is, God with us.

24Then Joseph being raised fromsleep did as the angel of the Lord hadbidden him, and took unto him his wife:

25And knew her not till she hadbrought forth her firstborn son: and hecalled his name JESUS.2:1Now when Jesus was born in Bethle-hem of Judaea in the days of Herod theking, behold, there came wise men fromthe east to Jerusalem,

2 Saying, Where is he that is bornKing of the Jews? for we have seen hisstar in the east, and are come to worshiphim.

3 When Herod the king had heardthese things, he was troubled, and all Je-rusalem with him.

4And when he had gathered all thechief priests and scribes of the peopletogether, he demanded of them whereChrist should be born.

5And they said unto him, In Beth-lehem of Judaea: for thus it is written bythe prophet,

6And thou Bethlehem, in the land ofJudah, art not the least among the princesof Judah: for out of thee shall come a Gov-ernor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7Then Herod, when he had privilycalled the wise men, inquired of themdiligently what time the star appeared.

8And he sent them to Bethlehem, andsaid, Go and search diligently for theyoung child; and when ye have foundhim, bring me word again, that I maycome and worship him also.

9When they had heard the king, theydeparted; and, lo, the star, which theysaw in the east, went before them, till itcame and stood over where the youngchild was.

10When they saw the star, they re-joiced with exceeding great joy.

11And when they were come into thehouse, they saw the young child withMary his mother, and fell down, andworshipped him: and when they hadopened their treasures, they presentedunto him gifts; gold, and frankincense,and myrrh.

12And being warned of God in adream that they should not return toHerod, they departed into their owncountry another way.

PSALM 1:1-61Blessed is the man that walketh not inthe counsel of the ungodly, nor standethin the way of sinners, nor sitteth in theseat of the scornful.

2But his delight is in the law of theLord; and in his law doth he meditateday and night.

3And he shall be like a tree planted bythe rivers of water, that bringeth forthhis fruit in his season; his leaf also shallnot wither; and whatsoever he doethshall prosper.

4The ungodly are not so: but are likethe chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall notstand in the judgment, nor sinners inthe congregation of the righteous.

6For the Lord knoweth the way of therighteous: but the way of the ungodlyshall perish.

pent, We may eat of the fruit of the treesof the garden:

3But of the fruit of the tree which is inthe midst of the garden, God hath said,Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall yetouch it, lest ye die.

4And the serpent said unto thewoman, Ye shall not surely die:

5For God doth know that in the day yeeat thereof, then your eyes shall beopened, and ye shall be as gods, know-ing good and evil.

6And when the woman saw that thetree was good for food, and that it waspleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be de-sired to make one wise, she took of thefruit thereof, and did eat, and gave alsounto her husband with her; and he dideat.

7And the eyes of them both wereopened, and they knew that they werenaked; and they sewed fig leaves to-gether, and made themselves aprons.

8And they heard the voice of theLord God walking in the garden in thecool of the day: and Adam and his wifehid themselves from the presence ofthe Lord God amongst the trees of thegarden.

9And the Lord God called untoAdam, and said unto him, Where artthou?

10And he said, I heard thy voice in thegarden, and I was afraid, because I wasnaked; and I hid myself.

11And he said, Who told thee thatthou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of thetree, whereof I commanded thee thatthou shouldest not eat?

12And the man said, The womanwhom thou gavest to be with me, shegave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13And the Lord God said unto thewoman, What is this that thou hastdone? And the woman said, The serpentbeguiled me, and I did eat.

14And the Lord God said unto theserpent, Because thou hast done this,thou art cursed above all cattle, andabove every beast of the field; upon thybelly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thoueat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between theeand the woman, and between thy seedand her seed; it shall bruise thy head, andthou shalt bruise his heel.

16Unto the woman he said, I willgreatly multiply thy sorrow and thyconception; in sorrow thou shalt bringforth children; and thy desire shall beto thy husband, and he shall rule overthee.

17And unto Adam he said, Becausethou hast hearkened unto the voice ofthy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, ofwhich I commanded thee, saying, Thoushalt not eat of it: cursed is the groundfor thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of itall the days of thy life;

18Thorns also and thistles shall itbring forth to thee; and thou shalt eatthe herb of the field;

19In the sweat of thy face shalt thoueat bread, till thou return unto theground; for out of it wast thou taken: fordust thou art, and unto dust shalt thoureturn.

20And Adam called his wife’s nameEve; because she was the mother of allliving.

21Unto Adam also and to his wife didthe Lord God make coats of skins, andclothed them.

22And the Lord God said, Behold, theman is become as one of us, to knowgood and evil: and now, lest he put forthhis hand, and take also of the tree of life,and eat, and live for ever:

23Therefore the Lord God sent himforth from the garden of Eden, to till theground from whence he was taken.

24So he drove out the man; and heplaced at the east of the garden of EdenCherubims, and a flaming sword whichturned every way, to keep the way of thetree of life.4:1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and sheconceived, and bare Cain, and said, Ihave gotten a man from the Lord.

2And she again bare his brother Abel.And Abel was a keeper of sheep, butCain was a tiller of the ground.

3And in process of time it came to

pass, that Cain brought of the fruit ofthe ground an offering unto the Lord.

4And Abel, he also brought of thefirstlings of his flock and of the fatthereof. And the Lord had respect untoAbel and to his offering:

5But unto Cain and to his offering hehad not respect. And Cain was verywroth, and his countenance fell.

6And the Lord said unto Cain, Whyart thou wroth? and why is thy counte-nance fallen?

7If thou doest well, shalt thou not beaccepted? and if thou doest not well, sinlieth at the door. And unto thee shall behis desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8And Cain talked with Abel hisbrother: and it came to pass, when theywere in the field, that Cain rose upagainst Abel his brother, and slew him.

9And the Lord said unto Cain, Whereis Abel thy brother? And he said, I knownot: Am I my brother’s keeper?

10And he said, What hast thou done?the voice of thy brother’s blood criethunto me from the ground.

11And now art thou cursed from theearth, which hath opened her mouth toreceive thy brother’s blood from thyhand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, itshall not henceforth yield unto thee herstrength; a fugitive and a vagabond shaltthou be in the earth.

13And Cain said unto the Lord, Mypunishment is greater than I can bear.

14Behold, thou hast driven me outthis day from the face of the earth; andfrom thy face shall I be hid; and I shallbe a fugitive and a vagabond in theearth; and it shall come to pass, thatevery one that findeth me shall slay me.

15And the Lord said unto him, There-fore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeanceshall be taken on him sevenfold. Andthe Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest anyfinding him should kill him.

16And Cain went out from the pres-ence of the Lord, and dwelt in the landof Nod, on the east of Eden.

17And Cain knew his wife; and sheconceived, and bare Enoch: and he

builded a city, and called the name ofthe city, after the name of his son,Enoch.

18And unto Enoch was born Irad: andIrad begat Mehujael: and Mehujaelbegat Methusael: and Methusael begatLamech.

19And Lamech took unto him twowives: the name of the one was Adah,and the name of the other Zillah.

20And Adah bare Jabal: he was the fa-ther of such as dwell in tents, and ofsuch as have cattle.

21And his brother’s name was Jubal:he was the father of all such as handlethe harp and organ.

22And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer inbrass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23And Lamech said unto his wives,Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wivesof Lamech, hearken unto my speech: forI have slain a man to my wounding, anda young man to my hurt.

24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25And Adam knew his wife again; andshe bare a son, and called his name Seth:For God, said she, hath appointed meanother seed instead of Abel, whomCain slew.

26And to Seth, to him also there wasborn a son; and he called his name Enos:then began men to call upon the nameof the Lord.

16Then Herod, when he saw that hewas mocked of the wise men, was ex-ceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slewall the children that were in Bethlehem,and in all the coasts thereof, from twoyears old and under, according to thetime which he had diligently inquired ofthe wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which wasspoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

18In Rama was there a voice heard,lamentation, and weeping, and greatmourning, Rachel weeping for her chil-dren, and would not be comforted, be-cause they are not.

19But when Herod was dead, behold,an angel of the Lord appeareth in adream to Joseph in Egypt,

20Saying, Arise, and take the youngchild and his mother, and go into theland of Israel: for they are dead whichsought the young child’s life.

21And he arose, and took the youngchild and his mother, and came into theland of Israel.

22But when he heard that Archelausdid reign in Judaea in the room of his fa-ther Herod, he was afraid to go thither:notwithstanding, being warned of Godin a dream, he turned aside into theparts of Galilee:

23And he came and dwelt in a citycalled Nazareth: that it might be ful-filled which was spoken by the proph-ets, He shall be called a Nazarene.3:1In those days came John the Baptist,preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2And saying, Repent ye: for the king-dom of heaven is at hand.

3For this is he that was spoken ofby theprophet Esaias, saying, The voice of onecrying in the wilderness, Prepare ye theway of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4And the same John had his raimentof camel’s hair, and a leathern girdleabout his loins; and his meat was locustsand wild honey.

5 Then went out to him Jerusalem,and all Judaea, and all the region roundabout Jordan,

6And were baptized of him in Jordan,confessing their sins.

PSALM 2:1-121Why do the heathen rage, and the peo-ple imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set them-selves, and the rulers take counsel to-gether, against the Lord, and against hisanointed, saying,

3Let us break their bands asunder,and cast away their cords from us.

4He that sitteth in the heavens shalllaugh: the Lord shall have them in deri-sion.

5 Then shall he speak unto them inhis wrath, and vex them in his sore dis-pleasure.

6Yet have I set my king upon my holyhill of Zion.

7I will declare the decree: the Lord

hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; thisday have I begotten thee.

8Ask of me, and I shall give thee theheathen for thine inheritance, and theuttermost parts of the earth for thy pos-session.

9Thou shalt break them with a rod ofiron; thou shalt dash them in pieces likea potter’s vessel.

10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings:be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11Serve the Lord with fear, and re-joice with trembling.

12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and yeperish from the way, when his wrath iskindled but a little. Blessed are all theythat put their trust in him.

PROVERBS 1:7-9The fear of the Lord is the beginning ofknowledge: but fools despise wisdomand instruction. My son, hear the in-struction of thy father, and forsake notthe law of thy mother: For they shallbe an ornament of grace unto thy head,and chains about thy neck.

3And the Lord said, My spirit shallnot always strive with man, for that healso is flesh: yet his days shall be an hun-dred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth inthose days; and also after that, when thesons of God came in unto the daughtersof men, and they bare children to them,the same became mighty men whichwere of old, men of renown.

5And God saw that the wickedness ofman was great in the earth, and thatevery imagination of the thoughts of hisheart was only evil continually.

6And it repented the Lord that he hadmade man on the earth, and it grievedhim at his heart.

7And the Lord said, I will destroy manwhom I have created from the face of theearth; both man, and beast, and thecreeping thing, and the fowls of the air;for it repenteth me that I have madethem.

8But Noah found grace in the eyes ofthe Lord.

9These are the generations of Noah:Noah was a just man and perfect in hisgenerations, and Noah walked with God.

10And Noah begat three sons, Shem,Ham, and Japheth.

11The earth also was corrupt beforeGod, and the earth was filled with vio-lence.

12And God looked upon the earth,and, behold, it was corrupt; for all fleshhad corrupted his way upon the earth.

13And God said unto Noah, The endof all flesh is come before me; for theearth is filled with violence throughthem; and, behold, I will destroy themwith the earth.

14Make thee an ark of gopher wood;rooms shalt thou make in the ark, andshalt pitch it within and without withpitch.

15And this is the fashion which thoushalt make it of: The length of the arkshall be three hundred cubits, thebreadth of it fifty cubits, and the heightof it thirty cubits.

16A window shalt thou make to theark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it

above; and the door of the ark shaltthou set in the side thereof; with lower,second, and third stories shalt thoumake it.

17And, behold, I, even I, do bring aflood of waters upon the earth, to de-stroy all flesh, wherein is the breath oflife, from under heaven; and every thingthat is in the earth shall die.

18But with thee will I establish mycovenant; and thou shalt come into theark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, andthy sons’ wives with thee.

19And of every living thing of all flesh,two of every sort shalt thou bring intothe ark, to keep them alive with thee;they shall be male and female.

20Of fowls after their kind, and of cat-tle after their kind, of every creepingthing of the earth after his kind, two ofevery sort shall come unto thee, to keepthem alive.

21And take thou unto thee of all foodthat is eaten, and thou shalt gather it tothee; and it shall be for food for thee,and for them.

22Thus did Noah; according to all thatGod commanded him, so did he.7:1And the Lord said unto Noah, Comethou and all thy house into the ark; forthee have I seen righteous before me inthis generation.

2Of every clean beast thou shalt taketo thee by sevens, the male and his fe-male: and of beasts that are not clean bytwo, the male and his female.

3Of fowls also of the air by sevens, themale and the female; to keep seed aliveupon the face of all the earth.

4For yet seven days, and I will cause itto rain upon the earth forty days andforty nights; and every living substancethat I have made will I destroy from offthe face of the earth.

5And Noah did according unto allthat the Lord commanded him.

6And Noah was six hundred years oldwhen the flood of waters was upon theearth.

7And Noah went in, and his sons, andhis wife, and his sons’ wives with him,

into the ark, because of the waters of theflood.

8Of clean beasts, and of beasts thatare not clean, and of fowls, and of everything that creepeth upon the earth,

9 There went in two and two untoNoah into the ark, the male and the fe-male, as God had commanded Noah.

10And it came to pass after sevendays, that the waters of the flood wereupon the earth.

11In the six hundredth year of Noah’slife, in the second month, the seven-teenth day of the month, the same daywere all the fountains of the great deepbroken up, and the windows of heavenwere opened.

12And the rain was upon the earthforty days and forty nights.

13In the selfsame day entered Noah,and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, thesons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and thethree wives of his sons with them, intothe ark;

14They, and every beast after hiskind, and all the cattle after their kind,and every creeping thing that creepethupon the earth after his kind, and everyfowl after his kind, every bird of everysort.

15And they went in unto Noah intothe ark, two and two of all flesh, whereinis the breath of life.

16And they that went in, went in maleand female of all flesh, as God had com-manded him: and the Lord shut him in.

17And the flood was forty days uponthe earth; and the waters increased, andbare up the ark, and it was lift up abovethe earth.

18And the waters prevailed, and wereincreased greatly upon the earth; and theark went upon the face of the waters.

19And the waters prevailed exceed-ingly upon the earth; and all the highhills, that were under the whole heaven,were covered.

20Fifteen cubits upward did the wa-ters prevail; and the mountains werecovered.

21And all flesh died that moved uponthe earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and

of beast, and of every creeping thingthat creepeth upon the earth, and everyman:

22All in whose nostrils was the breathof life, of all that was in the dry land,died.

23And every living substance wasdestroyed which was upon the face ofthe ground, both man, and cattle, andthe creeping things, and the fowl of theheaven; and they were destroyed fromthe earth: and Noah only remainedalive, and they that were with him in theark.

24And the waters prevailed upon theearth an hundred and fifty days.

MATTHEW 3:7–4:117But when he [John the Baptist] sawmany of the Pharisees and Sadduceescome to his baptism, he said unto them,O generation of vipers, who hathwarned you to flee from the wrath tocome?

8Bring forth therefore fruits meet forrepentance:

9And think not to say within your-selves, We have Abraham to our father:for I say unto you, that God is able ofthese stones to raise up children untoAbraham.

10And now also the ax is laid unto theroot of the trees: therefore every treewhich bringeth not forth good fruit ishewn down, and cast into the fire.

11I indeed baptize you with waterunto repentance: but he that comethafter me is mightier than I, whoseshoes I am not worthy to bear: he shallbaptize you with the Holy Ghost, andwith fire:

12Whose fan is in his hand, and hewill throughly purge his floor, andgather his wheat into the garner; but hewill burn up the chaff with unquench-able fire.

13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee toJordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14But John forbad him, saying, I haveneed to be baptized of thee, and comestthou to me?

15And Jesus answering said unto

him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus itbecometh us to fulfil all righteousness.Then he suffered him.

16And Jesus, when he was baptized,went up straightway out of the water:and, lo, the heavens were opened untohim, and he saw the Spirit of God de-scending like a dove, and lighting uponhim:

17And lo a voice from heaven, saying,This is my beloved Son, in whom I amwell pleased.4:1Then was Jesus led up of the Spiritinto the wilderness to be tempted of thedevil.

2And when he had fasted forty daysand forty nights, he was afterward anhungred.

3And when the tempter came to him,he said, If thou be the Son of God, com-mand that these stones be made bread.

4But he answered and said, It is writ-ten, Man shall not live by bread alone,but by every word that proceedeth outof the mouth of God.

5Then the devil taketh him up intothe holy city, and setteth him on a pin-nacle of the temple,

6And saith unto him, If thou be theSon of God, cast thyself down: for it iswritten, He shall give his angels chargeconcerning thee: and in their handsthey shall bear thee up, lest at any timethou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is writtenagain, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thyGod.

8Again, the devil taketh him up intoan exceeding high mountain, andsheweth him all the kingdoms of theworld, and the glory of them;

9And saith unto him, All these thingswill I give thee, if thou wilt fall down andworship me.

10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get theehence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shaltworship the Lord thy God, and him onlyshalt thou serve.

11Then the devil leaveth him, and, be-hold, angels came and ministered untohim.

PSALM 3:1-8A Psalm of David, when he fled fromAbsalom his son1Lord, how are they increased that trou-ble me! many are they that rise upagainst me.

3But thou, O Lord, art a shield forme; my glory, and the lifter up of minehead.

4I cried unto the Lord with my voice,and he heard me out of his holy hill.Selah.

5I laid me down and slept; I awaked;for the Lord sustained me.

6I will not be afraid of ten thousandsof people, that have set themselvesagainst me round about.

7Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God:for thou hast smitten all mine enemiesupon the cheek bone; thou hast brokenthe teeth of the ungodly.

8Salvation belongeth unto the Lord:thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

PROVERBS 1:10-19My son, if sinners entice thee, consentthou not. If they say, Come with us, letus lay wait for blood, let us lurk privilyfor the innocent without cause: Letus swallow them up alive as the grave;and whole, as those that go down intothe pit: We shall find all precioussubstance, we shall fill our houses withspoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let usall have one purse: My son, walk notthou in the way with them; refrain thyfoot from their path: For their feetrun to evil, and make haste to shedblood.Surely in vain the net is spreadin the sight of any bird. And they laywait for their own blood; they lurkprivily for their own lives. So are theways of every one that is greedy of gain;which taketh away the life of the own-ers thereof.

4GENESIS 8:1–10:321And God remembered Noah, and everyliving thing, and all the cattle that waswith him in the ark: and God made awind to pass over the earth, and the wa-ters asswaged;

2The fountains also of the deep andthe windows of heaven were stopped,and the rain from heaven was re-strained;

3And the waters returned from offthe earth continually: and after the endof the hundred and fifty days the waterswere abated.

4And the ark rested in the seventhmonth, on the seventeenth day of themonth, upon the mountains of Ararat.

5And the waters decreased continu-ally until the tenth month: in the tenthmonth, on the first day of the month,were the tops of the mountains seen.

6And it came to pass at the end offorty days, that Noah opened the win-dow of the ark which he had made:

7And he sent forth a raven, whichwent forth to and fro, until the waterswere dried up from off the earth.

8Also he sent forth a dove from him,to see if the waters were abated from offthe face of the ground;

9But the dove found no rest for thesole of her foot, and she returned untohim into the ark, for the waters were onthe face of the whole earth: then he putforth his hand, and took her, and pulledher in unto him into the ark.

10And he stayed yet other seven days;and again he sent forth the dove out ofthe ark;

11And the dove came in to him in theevening; and, lo, in her mouth was an ol-ive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew thatthe waters were abated from off theearth.

12And he stayed yet other seven days;

and sent forth the dove; which returnednot again unto him any more.

13And it came to pass in the six hun-dredth and first year, in the first month,the first day of the month, the waterswere dried up from off the earth: andNoah removed the covering of the ark,and looked, and, behold, the face of theground was dry.

14And in the second month, on theseven and twentieth day of the month,was the earth dried.

15And God spake unto Noah, saying,16Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy

wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wiveswith thee.

17Bring forth with thee every livingthing that is with thee, of all flesh, bothof fowl, and of cattle, and of every creep-ing thing that creepeth upon the earth;that they may breed abundantly in theearth, and be fruitful, and multiplyupon the earth.

18And Noah went forth, and his sons,and his wife, and his sons’ wives withhim:

19Every beast, every creeping thing,and every fowl, and whatsoever creepethupon the earth, after their kinds, wentforth out of the ark.

20And Noah builded an altar unto theLord; and took of every clean beast, andof every clean fowl, and offered burntofferings on the altar.

21And the Lord smelled a sweet sa-vour; and the Lord said in his heart, Iwill not again curse the ground anymore for man’s sake; for the imaginationof man’s heart is evil from his youth; nei-ther will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done.

22While the earth remaineth, seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, andsummer and winter, and day and nightshall not cease.9:1And God blessed Noah and his sons,and said unto them, Be fruitful, andmultiply, and replenish the earth.

2And the fear of you and the dread ofyou shall be upon every beast of theearth, and upon every fowl of the air,

upon all that moveth upon the earth,and upon all the fishes of the sea; intoyour hand are they delivered.

3Every moving thing that liveth shallbe meat for you; even as the green herbhave I given you all things.

4But flesh with the life thereof, whichis the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

5And surely your blood of your liveswill I require; at the hand of every beastwill I require it, and at the hand of man;at the hand of every man’s brother will Irequire the life of man.

6Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, byman shall his blood be shed: for in theimage of God made he man.

7And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply;bring forth abundantly in the earth, andmultiply therein.

8And God spake unto Noah, and to hissons with him, saying,

9And I, behold, I establish my cov-enant with you, and with your seed afteryou;

10And with every living creature thatis with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, andof every beast of the earth with you;from all that go out of the ark, to everybeast of the earth.

11And I will establish my covenantwith you; neither shall all flesh be cutoff any more by the waters of a flood;neither shall there any more be a floodto destroy the earth.

12And God said, This is the token ofthe covenant which I make betweenme and you and every living creaturethat is with you, for perpetual genera-tions:

13I do set my bow in the cloud, and itshall be for a token of a covenant be-tween me and the earth.

14And it shall come to pass, when Ibring a cloud over the earth, that thebow shall be seen in the cloud:

15And I will remember my covenant,which is between me and you and everyliving creature of all flesh; and the wa-ters shall no more become a flood to de-stroy all flesh.

16And the bow shall be in the cloud;and I will look upon it, that I may re-

member the everlasting covenant be-tween God and every living creature ofall flesh that is upon the earth.

17And God said unto Noah, This is thetoken of the covenant, which I have es-tablished between me and all flesh thatis upon the earth.

18And the sons of Noah, that wentforth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham,and Japheth: and Ham is the father ofCanaan.

19These are the three sons of Noah:and of them was the whole earth over-spread.

20And Noah began to be an husband-man, and he planted a vineyard:

21And he drank of the wine, and wasdrunken; and he was uncovered withinhis tent.

22And Ham, the father of Canaan, sawthe nakedness of his father, and told histwo brethren without.

23And Shem and Japheth took a gar-ment, and laid it upon both their shoul-ders, and went backward, and coveredthe nakedness of their father; and theirfaces were backward, and they saw nottheir father’s nakedness.

24And Noah awoke from his wine, andknew what his younger son had doneunto him.

25And he said, Cursed be Canaan; aservant of servants shall he be unto hisbrethren.

26And he said, Blessed be the Lord

God of Shem; and Canaan shall be hisservant.

27God shall enlarge Japheth, and heshall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Ca-naan shall be his servant.

28And Noah lived after the floodthree hundred and fifty years.

29And all the days of Noah were ninehundred and fifty years: and he died.10:1Now these are the generations of thesons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth:and unto them were sons born after theflood.

2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, andMagog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal,and Meshech, and Tiras.

3And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz,and Riphath, and Togarmah.

4And the sons of Javan; Elishah, andTarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5 By these were the isles of theGentiles divided in their lands; everyone after his tongue, after their families,in their nations.

6And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Miz-raim, and Phut, and Canaan.

7And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Hav-ilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, andSabtechah: and the sons of Raamah;Sheba, and Dedan.

8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began tobe a mighty one in the earth.

9He was a mighty hunter before theLord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nim-rod the mighty hunter before the Lord.

10And the beginning of his kingdomwas Babel, and Erech, and Accad, andCalneh, in the land of Shinar.

11Out of that land went forth Asshur,and builded Nineveh, and the city Reho-both, and Calah,

12And Resen between Nineveh andCalah: the same is a great city.

13And Mizraim begat Ludim, andAnamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

14And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out ofwhom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.

15And Canaan begat Sidon his first-born, and Heth,

16And the Jebusite, and the Amorite,and the Girgasite,

17And the Hivite, and the Arkite, andthe Sinite,

18And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite,and the Hamathite: and afterward werethe families of the Canaanites spreadabroad.

19And the border of the Canaaniteswas from Sidon, as thou comest toGerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, untoSodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, andZeboim, even unto Lasha.

20These are the sons of Ham, aftertheir families, after their tongues, intheir countries, and in their nations.

21Unto Shem also, the father of all thechildren of Eber, the brother of Japheththe elder, even to him were children born.

22The children of Shem; Elam, andAsshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, andAram.

23And the children of Aram; Uz, andHul, and Gether, and Mash.

24And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Sa-lah begat Eber.

25And unto Eber were born two sons:the name of one was Peleg; for in hisdays was the earth divided; and hisbrother’s name was Joktan.

26And Joktan begat Almodad, andSheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

27And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,28And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,29And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab:

all these were the sons of Joktan.30And their dwelling was from Me-

sha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mountof the east.

31These are the sons of Shem, aftertheir families, after their tongues, intheir lands, after their nations.

32These are the families of the sonsof Noah, after their generations, in theirnations: and by these were the nationsdivided in the earth after the flood.

MATTHEW 4:12-2512Now when Jesus had heard that Johnwas cast into prison, he departed intoGalilee;

13And leaving Nazareth, he came anddwelt in Capernaum, which is upon thesea coast, in the borders of Zabulon andNephthalim:

14That it might be fulfilled which wasspoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

15The land of Zabulon, and the landof Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, be-yond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

16The people which sat in darknesssaw great light; and to them which sat inthe region and shadow of death light issprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began topreach, and to say, Repent: for the king-dom of heaven is at hand.

18And Jesus, walking by the sea ofGalilee, saw two brethren, Simon calledPeter, and Andrew his brother, casting anet into the sea: for they were fishers.

19And he saith unto them, Follow me,and I will make you fishers of men.

20And they straightway left their nets,and followed him.

21And going on from thence, he sawother two brethren, James the son ofZebedee, and John his brother, in a shipwith Zebedee their father, mendingtheir nets; and he called them.

22And they immediately left the shipand their father, and followed him.

23And Jesus went about all Galilee,teaching in their synagogues, andpreaching the gospel of the kingdom,and healing all manner of sickness andall manner of disease among thepeople.

24And his fame went throughout allSyria: and they brought unto him all sickpeople that were taken with divers dis-eases and torments, and those whichwere possessed with devils, and thosewhich were lunatick, and those that hadthe palsy; and he healed them.

25And there followed him great mul-titudes of people from Galilee, and fromDecapolis, and from Jerusalem, andfrom Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

PSALM 4:1-8To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalmof David1Hear me when I call, O God of my righ-teousness: thou hast enlarged me whenI was in distress; have mercy upon me,and hear my prayer.

2O ye sons of men, how long will yeturn my glory into shame? how long willye love vanity, and seek after leasing?Selah.

3But know that the Lord hath setapart him that is godly for himself: theLord will hear when I call unto him.

4Stand in awe, and sin not: communewith your own heart upon your bed, andbe still. Selah.

5Offer the sacrifices of righteous-ness, and put your trust in the Lord.

6There be many that say, Who willshew us any good? Lord, lift thou upthe light of thy countenance upon us.

7Thou hast put gladness in my heart,

more than in the time that their cornand their wine increased.

8I will both lay me down in peace, andsleep: for thou, Lord, only makest medwell in safety.

5GENESIS 11:1–13:41And the whole earth was of one lan-guage, and of one speech.

2And it came to pass, as they jour-neyed from the east, that they found aplain in the land of Shinar; and theydwelt there.

3And they said one to another, Go to,let us make brick, and burn themthroughly. And they had brick for stone,and slime had they for mortar.

4And they said, Go to, let us build us acity and a tower, whose top may reachunto heaven; and let us make us a name,lest we be scattered abroad upon theface of the whole earth.

5And the Lord came down to see thecity and the tower, which the children ofmen builded.

6And the Lord said, Behold, the peo-ple is one, and they have all one lan-guage; and this they begin to do: andnow nothing will be restrained fromthem, which they have imagined to do.

7 Go to, let us go down, and there

confound their language, that they maynot understand one another’s speech.

8So the Lord scattered them abroadfrom thence upon the face of all theearth: and they left off to build the city.

9Therefore is the name of it called Ba-bel; because the Lord did there con-found the language of all the earth: andfrom thence did the Lord scatter themabroad upon the face of all the earth.

10These are the generations of Shem:Shem was an hundred years old, andbegat Arphaxad two years after theflood:

11And Shem lived after he begat Ar-phaxad five hundred years, and begatsons and daughters.

12And Arphaxad lived five and thirtyyears, and begat Salah:

13And Arphaxad lived after he begatSalah four hundred and three years, andbegat sons and daughters.

14And Salah lived thirty years, andbegat Eber:

15And Salah lived after he begat Eberfour hundred and three years, and begatsons and daughters.

16And Eber lived four and thirty years,and begat Peleg:

17And Eber lived after he begat Pelegfour hundred and thirty years, and begatsons and daughters.

18And Peleg lived thirty years, andbegat Reu:

19And Peleg lived after he begat Reutwo hundred and nine years, and begatsons and daughters.

20And Reu lived two and thirty years,and begat Serug:

21And Reu lived after he begat Serugtwo hundred and seven years, and begatsons and daughters.

22And Serug lived thirty years, andbegat Nahor:

23And Serug lived after he begat Na-hor two hundred years, and begat sonsand daughters.

24And Nahor lived nine and twentyyears, and begat Terah:

25And Nahor lived after he begat Te-rah an hundred and nineteen years, andbegat sons and daughters.

26And Terah lived seventy years, andbegat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now these are the generations ofTerah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, andHaran; and Haran begat Lot.

28And Haran died before his fatherTerah in the land of his nativity, in Ur ofthe Chaldees.

29And Abram and Nahor took themwives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sa-rai; and the name of Nahor’s wife,Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the fa-ther of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

30But Sarai was barren; she had nochild.

31And Terah took Abram his son, andLot the son of Haran his son’s son, andSarai his daughter in law, his sonAbram’s wife; and they went forth withthem from Ur of the Chaldees, to go intothe land of Canaan; and they came untoHaran, and dwelt there.

32And the days of Terah were twohundred and five years: and Terah diedin Haran.12:1Now the Lord had said unto Abram,Get thee out of thy country, and from thykindred, and from thy father’s house,unto a land that I will shew thee:

2And I will make of thee a great nation,and I will bless thee, and make thy namegreat; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3And I will bless them that bless thee,and curse him that curseth thee: and inthee shall all families of the earth beblessed.

4So Abram departed, as the Lord hadspoken unto him; and Lot went with him:and Abram was seventy and five yearsold when he departed out of Haran.

5And Abram took Sarai his wife, andLot his brother’s son, and all their sub-stance that they had gathered, and thesouls that they had gotten in Haran; andthey went forth to go into the land of Ca-naan; and into the land of Canaan theycame.

6And Abram passed through the landunto the place of Sichem, unto the plainof Moreh. And the Canaanite was thenin the land.

7And the Lord appeared unto Abram,and said, Unto thy seed will I give thisland: and there builded he an altar untothe Lord, who appeared unto him.

8And he removed from thence unto amountain on the east of Bethel, andpitched his tent, having Bethel on thewest, and Hai on the east: and there hebuilded an altar unto the Lord, andcalled upon the name of the Lord.

9And Abram journeyed, going on stilltoward the south.

10And there was a famine in the land:and Abram went down into Egypt to so-journ there; for the famine was grievousin the land.

11And it came to pass, when he wascome near to enter into Egypt, that hesaid unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, Iknow that thou art a fair woman to lookupon:

12 Therefore it shall come to pass,when the Egyptians shall see thee, thatthey shall say, This is his wife: and theywill kill me, but they will save theealive.

13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister:that it may be well with me for thy sake;and my soul shall live because of thee.

14And it came to pass, that, whenAbram was come into Egypt, the Egyp-tians beheld the woman that she wasvery fair.

15The princes also of Pharaoh sawher, and commended her before Pha-raoh: and the woman was taken intoPharaoh’s house.

16And he entreated Abram well for hersake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and heasses, and menservants, and maid-servants, and she asses, and camels.

17And the Lord plagued Pharaoh andhis house with great plagues because ofSarai Abram’s wife.

18And Pharaoh called Abram, andsaid, What is this that thou hast doneunto me? why didst thou not tell me thatshe was thy wife?

19Why saidst thou, She is my sister?so I might have taken her to me to wife:now therefore behold thy wife, take her,and go thy way.

20And Pharaoh commanded his menconcerning him: and they sent himaway, and his wife, and all that he had.13:1And Abram went up out of Egypt, he,and his wife, and all that he had, and Lotwith him, into the south.

2And Abram was very rich in cattle, insilver, and in gold.

3And he went on his journeys fromthe south even to Bethel, unto the placewhere his tent had been at the begin-ning, between Bethel and Hai;

4Unto the place of the altar, which hehad made there at the first: and thereAbram called on the name of the Lord.

MATTHEW 5:1-261And seeing the multitudes, he [Jesus]went up into a mountain: and when hewas set, his disciples came unto him:

2And he opened his mouth, andtaught them, saying,

3Blessed are the poor in spirit: fortheirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are they that mourn: for theyshall be comforted.

5Blessed are the meek: for they shallinherit the earth.

6Blessed are they which do hungerand thirst after righteousness: for theyshall be filled.

7Blessed are the merciful: for theyshall obtain mercy.

8Blessed are the pure in heart: forthey shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: forthey shall be called the children of God.

10Blessed are they which are perse-cuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirsis the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are ye, when men shall re-vile you, and persecute you, and shallsay all manner of evil against you falsely,for my sake.

12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: forgreat is your reward in heaven: for sopersecuted they the prophets whichwere before you.

for nothing, but to be cast out, and to betrodden under foot of men.

14Ye are the light of the world. A citythat is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15Neither do men light a candle, andput it under a bushel, but on a candle-stick; and it giveth light unto all that arein the house.

16Let your light so shine before men,that they may see your good works,and glorify your Father which is inheaven.

17Think not that I am come to destroythe law, or the prophets: I am not cometo destroy, but to fulfil.

18For verily I say unto you, Till heavenand earth pass, one jot or one tittle shallin no wise pass from the law, till all befulfilled.

19Whosoever therefore shall breakone of these least commandments, andshall teach men so, he shall be called theleast in the kingdom of heaven: butwhosoever shall do and teach them, thesame shall be called great in the king-dom of heaven.

20For I say unto you, That except yourrighteousness shall exceed the righ-teousness of the scribes and Pharisees,ye shall in no case enter into the king-dom of heaven.

21Ye have heard that it was said bythem of old time, Thou shalt not kill;and whosoever shall kill shall be in dan-ger of the judgment:

22But I say unto you, That whosoeveris angry with his brother without acause shall be in danger of the judg-ment: and whosoever shall say to hisbrother, Raca, shall be in danger of thecouncil: but whosoever shall say, Thoufool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23Therefore if thou bring thy gift tothe altar, and there rememberest thatthy brother hath aught against thee;

24Leave there thy gift before the altar,and go thy way; first be reconciled to thybrother, and then come and offer thygift.

25Agree with thine adversary quickly,whiles thou art in the way with him;lest at any time the adversary deliver

thee to the judge, and the judge deliverthee to the officer, and thou be cast intoprison.

26Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt byno means come out thence, till thouhast paid the uttermost farthing.

PSALM 5:1-12To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth,A Psalm of David1Give ear to my words, O Lord, considermy meditation.

2Hearken unto the voice of my cry, myKing, and my God: for unto thee will Ipray.

3My voice shalt thou hear in themorning, O Lord; in the morning will Idirect my prayer unto thee, and willlook up.

4For thou art not a God that hathpleasure in wickedness: neither shallevil dwell with thee.

5 The foolish shall not stand in thysight: thou hatest all workers of iniq-uity.

6Thou shalt destroy them that speakleasing: the Lord will abhor the bloodyand deceitful man.

7But as for me, I will come into thyhouse in the multitude of thy mercy:and in thy fear will I worship toward thyholy temple.

8Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteous-ness because of mine enemies; makethy way straight before my face.

9For there is no faithfulness in theirmouth; their inward part is very wicked-ness; their throat is an open sepulchre;they flatter with their tongue.

10Destroy thou them, O God; letthem fall by their own counsels; castthem out in the multitude of theirtransgressions; for they have rebelledagainst thee.

11But let all those that put their trustin thee rejoice: let them ever shout forjoy, because thou defendest them: letthem also that love thy name be joyful inthee.

12For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righ-teous; with favour wilt thou compasshim as with a shield.

6GENESIS 13:5–15:215And Lot also, which went with Abram,had flocks, and herds, and tents.

6And the land was not able to bearthem, that they might dwell together:for their substance was great, so thatthey could not dwell together.

7And there was a strife between theherdmen of Abram’s cattle and theherdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Ca-naanite and the Perizzite dwelled thenin the land.

8And Abram said unto Lot, Let therebe no strife, I pray thee, between me andthee, and between my herdmen and thyherdmen; for we be brethren.

9Is not the whole land before thee?separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: ifthou wilt take the left hand, then I willgo to the right; or if thou depart to theright hand, then I will go to the left.

10And Lot lifted up his eyes, and be-held all the plain of Jordan, that it waswell watered every where, before theLord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah,even as the garden of the Lord, like theland of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11Then Lot chose him all the plain of

Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and theyseparated themselves the one from theother.

12Abram dwelled in the land of Ca-naan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of theplain, and pitched his tent toward Sod-om.

13But the men of Sodom were wickedand sinners before the Lord exceed-ingly.

14And the Lord said unto Abram, afterthat Lot was separated from him, Lift upnow thine eyes, and look from the placewhere thou art northward, and south-ward, and eastward, and westward:

15For all the land which thou seest, tothee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

16And I will make thy seed as the dustof the earth: so that if a man can numberthe dust of the earth, then shall thy seedalso be numbered.

17Arise, walk through the land in thelength of it and in the breadth of it; for Iwill give it unto thee.

18Then Abram removed his tent, andcame and dwelt in the plain of Mamre,which is in Hebron, and built there analtar unto the Lord.14:1And it came to pass in the days ofAmraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king ofEllasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, andTidal king of nations;

2That these made war with Bera kingof Sodom, and with Birsha king of Go-morrah, Shinab king of Admah, andShemeber king of Zeboiim, and the kingof Bela, which is Zoar.

3All these were joined together in thevale of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.

4Twelve years they served Chedor-laomer, and in the thirteenth year theyrebelled.

5And in the fourteenth year cameChedorlaomer, and the kings that werewith him, and smote the Rephaims inAshteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims inHam, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiria-thaim,

6And the Horites in their mount Seir,unto El-paran, which is by the wilder-ness.
