To be able to be Jewish in a Jewish land is the legacy of the Macabees and to pursue that kind of Jewish freedom is why we celebrate the day with such enthusiasm. Thanksgiving is, as you know, our autumn fesƟval and it is based on Sukkot, the Jewish harvest fesƟval. That is preƩy much agreed on by most historians. And here is the interesƟng part: did you know that Hannukah is also based on Sukkot? It is. You see, when the Macabees nally rededi- cated the Temple on the 25 of Kislev, they had been ghƟng all throughout the Fall holidays of Rosh Hashanna, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. When they reached the Temple Mount, puried it (which is the where the story comes from about the oil), and rededicated it, they sought to fulll the mitzvot of waving the lulav and celebraƟng Sukkot, giving thanks to God for what had just happened. We know this from what is wriƩen in the book of 2 Maccabees - which is not in the bible. Here is what it says: "Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the ve and twenƟeth day of the same month, which is Kislev. And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the tab- ernacles, remembering that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles, when as they wandered From Rabbi Cy Stanway The Oldest Congregation in Monmouth County, and the One with the Youngest Attitude. It is hard to believe that we are at the beginning of December and we are in the middle of Hannukah! We all have heard how rare it is for Hannukah and Thanksgiving to coincide (what is it, every 72,000 years, or something like that?) It is a strange coincidence but when I look at it, I see in it an impor-tant Jewish lesson.

Hannukah is a holiday that celebrates our freedom and, in a way, so does Thanksgiving. Remember, despite the original Pilgrims' dismissive a tudes about the na ve 'savages,' as they called the Na ve Americans and the way they treated them, the reality is that they came to this country so they could prac ce their religion. Remem-ber, they were persecuted in England and so sought refuge on our shores.

The Macabees did not have any for-eign shores where they could run to. They had to stand up for themselves. To be sure, the years long war against the Green Selucids was bloody and violent. But the lesson is that some-thing worth living for is some mes worth fi gh ng - and dying - for. To be able to be Jewish in a Jewish land is the legacy of the Macabees and to pursue that kind of Jewish freedom is why we celebrate the day with such enthusiasm.

The great irony, though, is that we have confl ated Thanksgiving and Hannukah into some kind of bizzare holiday called "Thanksgivikkah." This is a bit distressing. To combine the totally secular holiday of Thanksgiv-

When they reached the Temple Mount, purifi ed it (which is the where the story comes from about the oil), and rededicated it, they sought to fulfi ll the mitzvot of waving the lulav and celebra ng Sukkot, giving thanks to God for what had just happened. We know this from what is wri en in the book of 2 Maccabees - which is not in the bible. Here is what it says:

"Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the fi ve and twen eth day of the same month, which is Kislev. And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the tab-ernacles, remembering that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles, when as they wandered

Being the parent of an almost 3 year old child is quite the adventure. I can recite episodes of Dora the Explorer, Yo Gabba Gabba, Thomas the Train, Team Umizoomi and especially Caillou in my sleep. One of the exci ng things that comes as a child this age learns and absorbs new things is her capability to par ci-pate in Jewish holidays and rituals. My daughter is learning basic blessings over food and drink and says them in her own toddler way.

By the me this ar cle is published, Chanukah will be past, but this year I am looking forward to ligh ng the Menorah with her and seeing this fun holiday through her eyes now that she is old enough to have a basic understanding that something special is happening. Of course I am sure that she will then expect to get gi s every night going forward.

Here at TBM, we celebrated Chanukah a li le early since it coincided with Thanksgiving. Our Youth Choir led a wonderful Shabbat service fi lled with Chanukah music on November 22. A big thank you and bravo to our Youth Choir: Lyla Gill, Olivia Gill, Ava Green, Abbey Reisler, Izabelle Shauriki, Elliot Topper, Michael Topper and Anna Vernick.

On Friday, December 6, the TBM Intergenera onal Choir (formerly known as the Adult Choir) will be rehearsing at 6:00 pm and then singing at 8:00 pm for Shabbat. All Temple members in good standing from grade 7-adults are invited to join.

There are s ll parts open for this year’s Purim Spiel: A Classic Rock Purim Spiel. We especially need adults or teens for a few roles.

Please email me to sing in a choir and/or to be part of the Purim Spiel.

Youth Group NewsHello again everyone. Salty has a lot of great events planned for this month that I hope to see everyone at. To start things off Salty is going to go ice ska ng in Red Bank. This is actually going to be a joint event and the fi rst Salteen event as well for

the year. I met with the Salteen group and will be planning many events for them in the future as well. They had a lot of great ideas and I look forward to making them happen. At the end of the month is the NFTY Winter Kallah. Scholarships are available for the event. The event is December 26th-29th at Camp Harlam. I hope everyone can come out again as we had a great group for Fall Kallah.

I would once again like to say that if anybody has any sugges ons for an event or an idea that they would like to see either of the youth groups do please get in contact with me. I would like to create the best experience possible for both of the TYG and am willing to listen to all comments and sugges ons that you may have. I am really excited for the year that we have planned out star ng with the Midnight Run in January. I look forward to con nue to work with everyone as this year progresses. Have a great new year!

Social Ac on Commi ee Helps Supports Jewish Family

and Children's Service

Last month, Gayle Topper and the Social Ac on Commi ee received a beau ful thank you le er from Paul Freedman, Execu ve Director of Jewish Family and Children's Service, for their support.

In part, Paul writes, "On behalf of the board of di-rectors, and those who benefi t from our services, I want to thank you for your dona on to our food support programs. Your generous contribu on of $100 refl ects the compassion you possess for the people in need of be er nutri on, and the lack of ability to prepare meals or are facing food insecu-rity."

It's just another example of how TBM members play a vital role in caring about the those in our community who are less fortunate. We certainly have a lot to be proud of as a congrega on!

Thank You for a Successful Rummage SaleOur Sisterhood Rummage Sale was a huge success. Our gross was a li le over $4,000 plus we had a very generous anonymous dona on of $5,000 from a Big-Hearted Sister!

The Rummage Sale is a huge commitment of me and energy and we thank our volun-teers and those who donated items! This is a key fundraiser for Sisterhood in order to host wonderful programs and support our temple and community in many worthwhile projects.

Our thanks go out to Rabbi Cy, Stella, Paula, Marje for helping us “get the word out”. Also a big thank you to Frank Marsico for his unending help.

This year a thank-you luncheon for the volunteers was given at Vivian's home by Sisterhood, Vivian and Joni. Everyone enjoyed the a ernoon.

Our speaker, Sara E. Brown, will explore the central role that Rwandan women played during the Rwandan Genocide. By sharing examples of ac ons undertaken by women bystanders, rescuers, vic ms, and perpetrators, she will shed light on the experiences of women, the deeply entrenched patriarchal system that limited their capacity to act, and off er some insight into con nued reconstruc on and rehabilita on eff orts. With the up-coming 20th commemora on of the Rwandan Genocide in April 2014, she will also stress the need to develop a comprehensive narra ve of the Rwandan genocide that includes women who exercised agency.

Sara E. Brown is the Stern Family Fellow and the fi rst compara ve genocide doctoral candi-date at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. Her dis-serta on, Gender and Agency: Women Rescuers and Perpetrators during the Rwandan Genocide, explores women who exercised agency during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Brown has worked and conducted research in Rwanda since 2004. She regularly travels there to conduct fi rsthand inter-views with survivors, perpetrators, rescuers, and witnesses of the Rwandan genocide.
