A Message from the SBRGC President Don’t forget the Annual Dinner is this month!

We had a 4 day Work Party in January and close to 40 volunteers to help out. A lot of needed work was completed which included the following: Removed the 100 yard line, moved the impact berm back 50’ and then reinstalled the 100 yard target line at

100 yards. This was done for maintenance purposes of the impact berm and to set the 100 yard line exactly at 100 yards.

Widened the container location at the 200 yard line for stowage of match equipment Painted all the K-Rails in the Range 6 parking lot (Both Sides) Installed two manhole covers over the septic tank on Range 6, this will help with vehicle traffic and seal the top

of the septic tank. Repaired the berm on the east side of Range 5 (Trap) and installed “L” Panels along the top for safety to con-

tain the shot in the Trap Range. Set 3 “L” Panels in the maintenance yard in preparations for setting up the maintenance yard this summer. Installed Gate one of two at the new entrance. Second gate will be installed during the February Work Party.

These gates are 16 feet wide so we will have one gate for entering and one gate for exiting. This also removed the issue of being able to see both directions when exiting the property.

Painted the Red & Yellow safety lines on Range 6 Replaced table tops and secured the current table tops/stools with new hardware. Cleaned out the erosion material behind the number boards at the 230 yard area on Range 6 Installed a new entrance road and road base to give it stability during wet weather Installed a new storm drain at the new main entrance to the property Upgraded the phone system so we can shift the check in range electronically and only have to move the credit

card machine when we switch check in ranges. As a side note, we did measure the 50yd, 100yd, 150yd and the 200yd target lines on Range 6. All are within 1

-2 inches from exact distance. You are all invited to attend the WORK PARTY on Feb 3 2018, just email me at [email protected] so we can ensure we have ample food. Some of the scheduled work includes:

Manufacture Gate # 2 for the main entrance

Painting of the existing gates

Relocating signs for the entrance

Repair Work on the large sign across the road

Relocate the RSO phones at Range 1 and Range 5

LAN wiring at Range 2

Military Rifle / Lever Action Rifle Silhouette Match January 7, 2018

We kicked off 2018 with our inaugural Long Range 22 match, and a good time was had by all. Chickens shot off hand at 50 yards, other animals off the bench at 100, 150 and 200 yards. We will be running it every month, come give it a try! Knocking down these big critters is lots of fun, so if you haven’t tried it, dust off that old lever gun hiding in the back of the safe and come on out! Bring 50 rounds of ammo – 40 for the match and 5 or 10 to sight in. 30-30 is a perfect caliber, but anything between 357Mag and 45-70 works, so long as it’s safe in a tube magazine. Course of fire is 10 rounds each: Chickens at 50 yards, Pigs at 100 yards, Turkeys at 150 yards and Rams at 200 yards.

Upcoming matches: February 4 – Lever Action with Long Range 22LR side match March 4 - Lever Action with Long Range 22LR side match Set up on the Main Range starts at 7:45.

SCHUETZENGUILDE Ten members of the Schuetzenguilde met on December 24, 2017, for the annual blanket shoot: 20 shots from centerfire rifles with iron sights at 100 yards on the old 10-ring target from the bench, and then 20 shots offhand at the same. We had brisk morning weather with light winds and it warmed up nicely later on. There were many nice prizes on the blanket, and everyone got to pick out a couple. Lots of fun! Our match in February, on the 25th, will also be for centerfire rifles with iron sights: 20 shots benchrest at 200 yards, and then 20 shots offhand. Hope to see everyone there! FEB. 2018 THE OLDE ROD & GUNNER 10

VaRiEtY is the SpIcE of LiFe I don't know about you, but I get a little bored doing the same, predictable things. I am pretty fortunate that in my job as a General Contractor (since 1989) that problem does not exist. I have been trained in nearly all the trades, and am able to perform them in a workmanlike manner, so I get lots of variety in my working life. At the range, it is usually a different story. Shooting in our standard format for the public leaves one with few options to choose from. To serve the general public, South Bay Rod and Gun Club has developed a system to safely operate our ranges, and that requires strict adherence to our Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to maintain the safe order of business. Our ranges are designed and built for specific uses, and our Range Safety Officers (RSO's) are trained to keep the ranges running, by guiding the public shooters in proper shooting practices. However, matches or training regimens have been developed to those who have specific interests in other types of shooting. Conventional Pistol (Bullseye) is a match that features pistol shooting at 25 and 50 yards, with turning targets and strict time allotments for getting one's shots off. The Silhouette Matches (both small-bore and center fire) are for those who like the instant gratification of seeing their steel silhouette targets flop over when struck. The thrill of "bang, clang, thud" is hard to beat when shooting steel targets at distances from 40 yards to 200 yards. Highpower rifle and Palma are traditional target shooting matches that are favored by those with the desire to increase their skills with rifles in distinct classes with national standard courses of fire. Love the lore of the old west and the way of the cowboys? Maybe Cowboy Action shoot-ing is for you. Using real or replica guns, they have a fun and challenging match set in the style of the days of the old west, complete with the requirement to dress in old west period clothing. Want to go back further... we have an active group of folks that enjoy muzzle loading firearms. Flintlock or percussion cap fired, they shoot at some creative targets and have developed a real camaraderie based on their appreciation for the guns of the earliest days of our country. If you are more interested in the modern firearms, perhaps the "America's Rifle Challenge" (ARC) training is for you. Based on learning to shoot modern semi-automatic, box fed firearms (rifle and pistol), the ARC is a course designed to help you develop skills needed to operate your guns in field-like conditions. Shooters start out at a mere 7 yards to build confidence and then work their way back to the 100 yard line. They learn to shoot from their strong side and their support side, from standing, kneeling, and prone positions. And just to keep everyone honest, it comes with time pressure, with prescribed time periods in which one must shoot, reload, and shoot again. Whatever your interest, there is a chance that we have something for you. We can even let you sit at the same old bench, and shoot at the same old target, placed at the same old distance.

However, when you are ready to move your game up a bit, check out some of the available special interest matches or training opportunities that our club offers. In either case, the range is a great place to meet really nice folks (and a cranky one or two) and make new friends. By the way, if you're the type that likes to help out, there are opportunities for that at our club, as well. We are always looking to train new RSO's, and will get you through an NRA certified Range Safety Officer training class if you're willing to volunteer one day a month to keep our ranges staffed. We also are looking for persons who are will-ing to participate in the once a month club workdays, always on the 1st Saturday of the month (weather permitting) to help keep our range maintenance up to par. (lunch pro-vided!) Thank you for your consideration. Jeff Maynard Board of Directors member Junior Rifle Training Director ARC Program Director
