ABOUT TONIGHT’S MATCH A tough non-conference schedule can be beneficial to prepare for conference play. For the Blue and Gold, so far, so good. The John Carroll University Blue Streaks (5-0) welcome the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (3-2) into Don Shula Stadium for a Saturday evening matchup. The 5-0 record that JCU brings into the match is the first time that it has achieved this record since 2000. The undefeated start prompted those voting in the United Soccer Coaches poll to tab the Blue Streaks as the seventh-ranked team in the country. John Carroll made the short journey to Case Western on Wednesday Evening. Characterized by physical, defensive play, the Blue Streaks would emerge victorious after 90 minutes of play with the final score of 1-0. The lone goal came in the 36th minute when Hayden Parente made his way into the box and was fouled. After the referee awarded a penalty kick, Jesse Marinaro would convert. That would prove to be enough as the JCU defense led by the likes of Tristan Lyles, Brian Lutz and Jared Vidika stood tall to keep the clean sheet. Goalkeeper Liam McIntosh would make five saves for his fourth shutout of the season. The Battling Bishops would also take the field on Wednesday evening. Ohio Wesleyan would travel to Ada, Ohio, to take on OAC-member Ohio Northern. OWU would take the victory in exciting fashion, 3-2. The Battling Bishops would take a 2-0 lead into halftime after a 17th minute goal by Adam Yingling and a 32nd minute goal by Matt Yingling, who assisted on Adam Yingling’s goal. The Polar Bears would make a late tying the game at 2-2 with goals in the 79th and 84th minute. However, Ohio Wesleyan would answer just after the 85th minute when Ryan Roberts netted the decisive third goal to get the win. Mike Heeschen made three saves in the contest. Hayden Parente and Jesse Marinaro both lead the Blue Streaks in points with seven. Parente has the edge on goals with three compared to Marinaro’s two, and Marinaro leads the squad with three assists. The defense of JCU has been stellar as the team has only allowed one goal in the first five matches. JCU has outshot its opponents, 92-42. Leading the charge for OWU is Ryan Roberts, whose three goals and seven points lead the team in both of those categories. Joe Brush is second in those categories with two goals and five points. Both Matt Yingling and Adam Yingling each have three points. In goal, Mike Heeschen has earned the most playing time, and he has made 18 saves in the season. This will be the 12th all-time meeting between John Carroll and Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops have won eight of the 11 previous meetings, but John Carroll won the only match in the series that was played in University Heights. The Blue Streaks took a 3-1 decision over Ohio Wesleyan on September 20, 2008. All other matches have taken place in Delaware, Ohio (home of Ohio Wesleyan) or on neutral fields.
