Facts about Career Colleges and Schools and their Students

There are 300 licensed career colleges and schools in Ohio that provide professional, technical, career-specific programs in 200+ occupational areas; grant degrees, certificates and diplomas.

All Career Colleges and Schools are licensed by the State of Ohio; overseen by the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools; approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Many Career Colleges and Schools are nationally and/or regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, The Higher Learning Commission (North Central Association of Colleges) and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, among others.

Career college students account for about one-third of all the health and computer majors; two occupations projected to be among the fastest growing jobs in Ohio through 2016.

Approximately 81% of graduates find jobs in their field of study within 90 days of graduation.

The average cost of tuition at Ohio career colleges is less than the $15,415 statewide average for all of Ohio’s tax-supported community colleges, state universities and their branches, and non-profits.

Colleges and Schools are privately owned and operated and not supported by any federal, state, or local tax money.

The OACCS OhioLEADS! Scholarship Program for 2016

The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools, in cooperation with 30 participating career colleges and schools, is offering 200+ scholarships. The primary objective of these scholarships is to provide students with the education and training necessary to obtain a job in an Ohio business or industry and encourage students to learn more about leadership in their communities and in Ohio.

Available scholarships may cover full, one-half tuition, or a specific dollar amount. Awards for each individual scholarship are not transferable to other programs or schools. Finances for the scholarships are borne by the member schools and colleges and no state or federal funds are involved.

Who is eligible?

These scholarships are available to any current high school senior graduating from any Ohio High School by June of 2016.

The applicant only needs a “C” average or better to apply. Students do not have to demonstrate financial need.

Each applicant must be nominated by a local civic or community leader or by a current member of the Ohio Legislature.

Any recipient of a scholarship must be able to meet the college or school’s entrance requirements. Each applicant is eligible to apply for up to three scholarships, but must use a separate application

for each scholarship. The scholarship recipient must start classes either the summer or the fall term following their high

school graduation.

Scholarship Information

The scholarship amount will be allocated over the length of the program. Scholarships are not transferable from one school or program to another. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, processing fees, books, lab charges, and student activity fees.

A scholarship committee will select the winner for each scholarship. The recipient must meet the requirements of the college offering the scholarship. Scholarship winners will be notified no later than May 14, 2016

How to Apply

1. Choose school and program(s) from the participating schools listed below.

2. Complete the information on the Scholarship Application and obtain the appropriate signatures.

3. Submit two current letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, employers or others, with your

application.

4. A copy of your high school transcript (grades) and attendance records for the past 4 semesters and verification of

your Grade Point Average signed by the school guidance counselor or principal, must accompany each application.

5. Submit a written statement of approximately 250 words explaining why you want a career in the field you have

listed on this application and why you feel you will be successful in this field. This can be typed or handwritten, but

must be on the standard 8 ½” X 11” paper. Your name, address, phone number and high school name should be

printed in the upper left-hand corner.

6. Complete the Nomination Form. Send the form and a short note asking your chosen civic leader to nominate you

for this scholarship. It is suggested that your note include a brief paragraph about who you are and why you want

the scholarship. It is acceptable to send the note and the Nomination Form by email, fax, or U.S. Mail. You can find

out who your Ohio representative and/or senator is by entering your zip code + 4 on one of the following web sites:

www.ohiosenate.gov/ or www.house.state.oh.us/. NOTE: This form should be returned to you or your counselor

from your nominator and then submitted with your application.

The deadline for application submission is April 9, 2016.
