The Ohio 4-H Foundation New President and Board Members will ring in the 2013 New Year!
Volume 13, No. 1
The Ohio 4-H Foundation Board is pleased to welcome Karen Corcoran as the 2013 President
along with seven new members to the organization: Kim Catchpole from Adventure Central is
representing the Ohio Association of Extension Professionals, Denise Shockley - Gallia Vinton
ESC, Christine Steele – Abbott, Elizabeth Thomas - The ScottsMiracle-Gro Company and
Doug Tenney along with two youth members from the TEEN Advisory Council help to round
out the 2013 Ohio 4-H Foundation Board.
The Board consists of highly qualified volunteers from all over Ohio with a variety of professional
backgrounds and firsthand experiences with 4-H. Special thanks to Nominating Chair Cindy Rasmussen and
the entire nominating committee for producing this excellent slate of new members. Board members are
selected through a rigorous nominating process that maximizes the ability to provide critical advice, volunteer
effort, and financial resources to enhance Ohio 4-H programs, professional development, and scholarship
awards.
We bid a fond farewell to departing members Gale Betterly, Erica Clouse, Lynnze English, Robert Joseph,
Jed Osborn and Joy Sharp. The Foundation is vastly improved as a result of their time and talent in building
the resources for Ohio 4-H.

How did we make all of this happen? Surprise, by “Working Together”! I started the year
with this phrase that my dad coined in a weekly column he wrote for 28 years as a county
extension agent. I have spent over 40 years in the commercial building construction
business. It takes clear, concise communication between owner, architect and builder to
achieve the desired building. Each new building continues to be a challenge in cooperation
to accomplish the end goal. To this point, I continue to marvel at what a seamless
organization Ohio 4-H is! Inherent in the system is participation of the Federal, State and
County governments, individual and corporate funding, thousands of local volunteers and
the end users, our Ohio 4-H youth. So many places for the system to fail, but it doesn’t. We
have been able to add 15 more county educators this year, 4-H enrollment is at 240,000 and
volunteers number 31,000. Ohio 4-H has grown and improved this year and it is in a great
position to continue this growth in 2013.
Roger W. Himes 2012 President, Ohio 4-H Foundation Board
How quickly the 110th
year of 4-H rolled by in Ohio. Our Ohio 4-H
Foundation conducts only 3 or 4 major events each year, but the planning
effort is huge and tends to make the year fly by. Thanks again to the
many volunteers and 4-H staff who made these events so successful. Our
Teen & Volunteer Conference in March was attended by 2000 4-H
members and volunteers. In June we awarded 51 separate awards and
scholarships to 70 4-H youth from 30 counties totaling $92,000. We
continue to market ourselves with more of a presence at the Ohio State
Fair. Our annual Celebration of Youth event was a great success and is
highlighted within this newsletter.
Have you ever heard “out with the old and in with the new”? Well lucky
for the Ohio 4-H Foundation we are welcoming new Board members in
2013. Joining the board are Denise Shockley, Christine Steele, Elizabeth
Thomas, Doug Tenney and Kim Catchpole. We did have to say goodbye
to some wonderful 4-H volunteers and professionals but their dedication
and leadership helped to Make the Best Better.
I am really excited about 2013. We are being energized with some idea
Project SAFE – Workforce Prep Joyce Shriner, Hocking County
In collaboration with The Ohio 4-H Foundation and
Logan-Hocking Schools, the Project SAFE after school
program teaches workforce preparation and provides
exposure to community work environments through
field trips. The purpose of the club is to teach
employment skills, to give hope for the future, to
provide a positive reason to prioritize school and
achievement and
avoid high risk behaviors. The program was open to all middle school students in the
after school care program, including those not currently enrolled in 4-H.
In 2012, 50 grants totaling
$111,000 were funded
throughout Ohio.

2012 Grant Programs at Work!
Fashion, Food & Fun! Tracy Winters, Gallia County
Fashion, Food and Fun! provided the opportunity for
hands-on activity and assistance with food and clothing
projects from experts, while delivering adult
mentorship and peer to peer interaction. Thanks to
funding provided in part by The Ohio 4-H Foundation,
25 youth from six counties participated, of which 52%
were first time project takers!
The Ohio 4-H Foundation Grants Program provides 4-H professionals with much needed support in building the capacity for positive
youth development programming, and to train and recognize volunteers that are so essential to delivering those programs. In most
cases, the Foundation is a partner, rather than the sole source of funds. Investments are made where the strategic use of resources are
most in evidence and where the largest number of 4-H youth can be reached with the most meaningful and sustainable impact.

via the use of LEGO bricks and
with older children, robotics. The
Ohio 4-H Cloverbot Challenge
was held on June 9, 2012 at the
Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau

As I continued on my 4-H adventure and got older,
more opportunities opened up for me. Junior Leaders
and Junior Fair Board were just two of the leadership
positions I have held in my 4-H career. One of the
other 4-H events that I attended was the 4-H Teen
Conference and learned many valuable lessons and
information about each of my different leadership
roles. The Teen Conference also showed my future
college major. A fun candy session at the
conference showed me food science. Now, I study
food science at The Ohio State University.
Without 4-H, I do not know where I would be or
what I would be studying. Without 4-H, I would not
be a leader or have gone to camp. 4-H defines who I
am.
County Endowments
County 4-H endowments are permanent accounts, funded
through individual donations, business and corporate
contributions, and fundraising events. Each county has full
control over the interest income generated by their
endowment. County endowment funds support local 4-H
programs through 4-H member scholarships and awards,
educational workshops and resources, and volunteer training
and support. This year over $295,000 was distributed to 77
counties throughout the state.

Our Fantastic 4-H Members!
Elizabeth Fischbach, Allen County
I do not know where I would be without 4-H. My
sisters and I grew up with 4-H and it has always been
a family affair. My great grandparents were Allen
County 4-H advisors; grandma was a 4-H member.
My Dad and Mom were not only members but
advisors as well. I have learned many life skills from
my 10 years as a 4-H member. I learned who I am and
where I want to go through 4-H.
One of the skills 4-H gave me was leadership and my
passion to work with kids. My older sister went to
camp a year before I could, and wow was I jealous!
But the next year, my first year in 4-H, I was a first
year camper and I did not stop there. I went to other
sponsored camps and once I became old enough, I
became a beloved camp counselor at Allen County 4-
H camp. I loved every minute of camp; from the
planning to the moments when we needed to
improvise because of bad weather. My love of camp
compelled me to become an Operation: Military Kids
Camp counselor and volunteer for OMK. Being a
camp counselor, I learned to be responsible, reliable,
flexible and all the other words that describe the ideal
counselor.
