Consumer research conducted acouple of years ago fueled the

strategy behind establishing a Zippo –endorsed club. A surprising 4 millionpeople in the U.S. alone identifiedthemselves as collectors of Zippolighters.

For over a year, the Zippo collectorsclub strategy team met to build thefoundation of our first-ever Zippocollectors club. Led by Peggy Errera,Assistant Manager MarketingCommunications, the Zippo collectorsclub strategy team consisted ofJeff Bosworth, Computer GraphicsManager, Star Davis, CommunicationsCoordinator, Shirley Evers, ConsumerRelations Manager, Jerry Johnson, Jr.,Systems Programmer Analyst, LindaMeabon, Museum Curator/Archivist,and Violet Snyder, National AccountsManager.

To name the club, the team invitedemployees to suggest a name for thecollectors club that was creative, unique and representative of Zippo

collectors. The majority of the employeefeedback was some variation of the "ZippoClick", playing off the famous sound of aZippo lighter, and the word clique definedas an exclusive and usually close-knit groupof people. Therefore, the club was officiallynamed the Zippo Click Collectors Club.

On behalf of the Zippo collectors clubstrategy team and all who had a part indeveloping the club, welcome to theZippo Click Collectors Club!

Author, business owner, Zippo lightercollector, to our friend Robert (Bob)Brockman goes the distinguished honorof being the first highlight in our "CollectorProfile".

Bob has recently finished The Lighter Sideof Camel, a book that places every Camellighter made by Zippo under one cover. Thesoft-cover book contains aprice guide, identificationreference, and hundredsof brilliant color photosof Zippo-manufacturedCamel lighters over thepast 50 years.

After almost threeyears in the worksand at least six or sevenrevisions, The Lighter Side of Camelmade its debut at the 2002 Zippo/CaseInternational Swap Meet. "People told me itwas a labor of love-I think it was the closestthing to childbirth I will ever know," saysBrockman.

Bob has been a Zippo lighter collectorsince 1991 when he stumbled across apromotional Zippo lighter featuringSuperValu. Soon after that, a Pillsbury lighterwas added to his collection. To date, Bob’sbest find was a mint, in the box, 1950s ZippoCar that he purchased at a flea market for$20. Bob proudly displays his collection onwebsite zipstreet.com.

Now Bob focuses his collecting endeavorson the Town & Country Series, ship lighters, major advertisers pre-1960, and of courseCamel lighters. "At first I collected anythingand everything Zippo but as time went on Irealized that I could not keep up…there isjust too much!"

Bob Brockman was born and raised in FortWayne, Indiana. Today he resides there withhis wife Kelly, his son Bo, and daughterMegan. Arriving in September will be Boband Kelly’s third child to be named Lexi(might we suggest Lexippo).

A New Zippo Flame AscendsOver EuropeThere is a new Zippo flame soaring over Europe these days, andit comes with a whoosh instead of a click. It is the flame from thepropane of the colorful Zippo hot air balloon. The balloon, a projectof Zippo Germany, has participated in a variety of balloon eventssince its first launch in the spring of 2001.

The Zippo balloon was created for promoting the Zippo brand. Theballoon is a great tool that fits perfectly, as it is driven by a flame. The huge Zippo logo is very prominent in the sky and as people arealways attracted to a hot air balloon, they look for it.

Last year the Zippo balloon appeared in four major events inGermany and Austria. This year the balloon has been scheduled fortwo major balloon races highlighted by the Zippo Cup in Germanyand Austria. In June the balloon visited Croatia, and other Europeanappearances are being planned for France and the Netherlands.

The balloon was hand made and carries 4 to 5 passengers plus thepilot. It has a volume of 4000 m3 and can carry up to 800 kg. Theballoon is managed and driven by a professional company calledBallonteam Achim Schneider. They have driven hot airballoons around the world and haveparticipated (not in the Zippoballoon) in the largestballoon event in theworld, the famousAlbuquerqueInternationalBalloon Fiesta inAlbuquerque,New Mexico.

As part of Zippo’s 70th Anniversarycommemoration, owners Sarah Dornand George Duke have commissioned300 exceptional solid gold lighters.

The Signet Lighter was unveiled at the2002 Zippo/CaseInternational Swap Meet, where #70, in honor ofZippo’s 70th Anniversary, was auctioned for $6,250.Sarah Dorn will retain the #1 lighter, while George Duke has selected #107,honoring the birth of his grandfather,Zippo founder George G. Blaisdell, 107years ago. The #7 lighter will beawarded to one Zippo Click memberselected at random. All members whojoin by December 31, 2002 will beentered in the drawing.

The image on the lighter replicates theimage on the Zippo signet ring, designed and crafted by Tiffany &Company. Since the 1940s, nine of therings have been commissioned byBlaisdell and given to his directdescendants. The concept of the ringhearkens back to the 1700s, whenindividuals wore such rings to imprint awax seal to secure a document orenvelope. The reversed likeness on thesignet ring displays the image correctlywhen depressed into the hot wax seal.

The Zippo Signet Lighter is producedfrom 18 karat gold to the same specifi-cations as the 1941 model, easilyrecognized by several distinguishing

characteristics. The 1941 case has flatplanes with sharp, less rounded edgeswhere the front and back surfaces meetthe sides, and the lid and bottom arejoined with a four-barrel hinge. Eachlighter is individually numbered andengraved by Zippo’s vintagePantograph process.

Engraving above and below the four-barrel hinge reads: GGB 1941 (for thelighter model) and 2002 (for the year ofissue). Engraving opposite the hingecertifies the lighter as 18-karat gold.

Each lighter is individually numbered onthe reverse bottom surface.

The inside unit closely replicates thedesign of the original 1941 model insideunit. Straight, flat sides meet the frontand back surfaces with squared edges. The chimney has fewer holes, and ahollow rivet holds the striking wheel inplace, similar to the 1941 design.

As a special feature of the SignetLighter, the inside unit, including thecam and flint wheel, has been platedwith 18-karat gold.

An exclusive bottom stamp authenti-cates this lighter as the GGB 1941model. Following stamping of the 300thlighter, the die for the bottom stampwas rendered inoperable, ensuring thatno more will ever be made.

Packaging

The Zippo Signet Lighter is packaged ina deluxe cherry presentation boxhandcrafted in Bradford fromPennsylvania hardwoods. A solidgranite plaque framed in rich cherrydisplays a deep laser engraved image ofthe signet design on the lid.

An exceptional component of theZippo Signet Lighter is the certificate ofauthenticity inset in the bottom panelof every box. Each certificate is handnumbered to match the lighter inside, and personally signed by Sarah Dornand George Duke.

A pillowed insert cradles the solid goldlighter in plush burgundy satin, and asatin-covered support unfolds todisplay the lighter in an uprightposition. The inside lid is enhanced withan antiqued brass Zippo logomedallion.

Pitt-Bradford Helps zippoclick.com Become RealityBy Star Davis

One of the greatest member benefitsof the Zippo Click Collectors Club iszippoclick.com. Members are able toaccess member-only pages including:classified ads, member forums, special offers, member profiles andan opportunity to purchase exclusiveZippo Click products and clothing.

It is thanks to three University ofPittsburgh at Bradford undergrads, with some direction from ourInformation Technology and MarketingCommunications Departments, whohave made this possible.

The training and academic preparationof the students was significantlyenhanced by two successful grantproposals awarded to Pitt-Bradford’sBusiness Management Departmentby the PA Department of Education’sLink-to-Learn program. Don Lewicki,

"These three were selectedbecause they are easily themost qualified of our MIS

students in terms of IT skills; the factthat each one is highly responsible,hard-working and discreet are factorsevery bit as important as their IT talent,"said Lewicki.

Future plans for the website includeauction functionality and live online chats.

Assistant Professor of BusinessManagement, and Richard Nelson,Associate Professor of BusinessManagement, were the grant writersand project directors.

The grant projects were predicated inpart on recognition of the shortage ofqualified IT employees, especially acutein rural parts of the U.S. like northwesternPA. Input fromarea firms andthe creation of aformal IT IndustryAdvisor Panel forthis MIS initiativewas an importantelement in bothgrants.

This panel includes Jim Shincovich,Director of Information Technology atZippo. When contacted by Pitt-Bradfordabout the possibility of students workingon a Zippo project, Shincovich thoughtzippoclick.com would be a greatopportunity for the students.

Don Kemick from Bradford, PA, Ryan Baxterfrom Warren, PA, and Jeremy Callinanfrom Jamestown, NY, were selected.

For years, when referring to the originalZippo lighter, it was referred to as the"1932 Zippo lighter". In 1997 Zippodiscovered that was not correct. The firstlighter was actually made in 1933.

The discovery was made as the MarketingCommunications Department beganplanning for the museum at the Zippo/Case Visitors Center. Mrs. Sarah Dorn, daughter of Zippo founder George G.Blaisdell, delivered a box that had been instorage at her home. It proved that Zippo

THE ZIPPO BEGINNING

was established in October 1932 and theoriginal Zippo lighter was actually made inJanuary 1933.

Tagged with the words, "First Zippo lighter -Do not touch" in Mr. Blaisdell’s handwriting, the 1933 model lighter case and inside unitwere cut from brass tubing. The top andbottom pieces were soldered in place toform the complete lighter case. The cornersof the lighter were square, the entire hinge iswelded to the outside of the lighter case, andthe lighter is 1/4" taller than lightersproduced today. The lighters were producedwith a plain case or with decorative linesengraved in the corners.

The first Zippo lighter accomplishedMr. Blaisdell’s goal of "one hand operation, windproof, and guaranteed." 82 Zippo

lighters were produced the first monthwith a profit of $62.15.

Patent 2032695 for the Zippo lighter wasissued in 1936. The patent number doesnot appear beneath the word "Zippo" onthe bottom of the original lighter.

The first Zippo lighter is proudly displayedat the Zippo/CaseVisitors Centerin BradfordPennsylvania.

On The Lighter Side, commonly know as OTLS, isan international lighter collectors club based outof Quitman, Texas.

In 1984, Judith Sanders came across an ad looking for Dunhill lighters that John Cuevashad posted in Antique Trader magazine. She immediately contacted John, andsuggested they form the OTLS for the hobby they cherish, collecting lighters.

Started with just 3 members in Quitman Texas, the club has since grown to 800 membersin 10 countries. It is comprised of collectors of diverse tastes in their collections, butwith the same passion for the hobby. "Belonging to a club creates a network of friendswith like interests," stated Judith, co-founder and chairman of the board.

OTLS holds an annual lighter convention. Every other year the convention is held inLas Vegas, Nevada and the opposite year at a location on the east coast.

A limited edition convention lighter commemorates the annual event. This year, theclub’s commemorative lighter was a Zippo lighter with a graphic of the location (RivieraHotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada) pictured on the front of the lighter. Zippo has beenthe chosen brand for the commemorative lighter since the first OTLS convention in1987. "We picked Zippo because so many people in our club collect Zippo lighters,"Judith stated. "They are a reliable company and we like the lighters!" she added. Thefirst convention lighter in 1987 was designed by Judith, with many others contributingdesigns over the past 16 years.

OTLS publishes a bi-monthly newsletter that contains notesfrom the editor, articles on lighters, articles on members, question and answer section, and classified ads. An annual"Convention Letter" providing convention details is also published.

Any questions or interest in the club can be forwardedto OTLS, PO Box 1733, Quitman, Texas 75783-1733 or(903) 763-2795. For more information, click on the OTLSwebsite www.otls.com
