Advanced Cardiac Services at Manatee MemorialWe take technology to heart
Reduced risk of possible stroke with the WATCHMAN™ ImplantThe Heart and Vascular Center is the first in the region to offer patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation an alternative to long-term warfarin medication. The WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Implant helps to catch harmful blood clots before they enter the bloodstream, which may reduce the risk of stroke.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)TAVR is a minimally-invasive alternative to traditional valve replacement for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. It involves the insertion of a balloon-expandable heart valve replacement, via a catheter.
MitraClip® for mitral regurgitationThe Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial is among the first in Florida to offer the highly advanced MitraClip procedure for mitral regurgitation. Mitral regurgitation decreases the amount of blood that reaches the heart, which can cause heart failure. MitraClip, inserted through a catheter, can help keep the mitral valve open so that blood can flow to the heart.
We’re dedicated to the health of your heart and vascular system. That’s why we continue to add to our range of services.

“My wife suggested I have a CT Heart Score Test at MDC when I turned 60, since my dad passed away at 62 from heart issues. I ended up having two stents placed at Manatee Memorial Hospital.”- Paul Chambliss
“After Paul, I decided to have the test. I have always exercised and figured my results would be fine. To my surprise the results weren’t very good. I also had to have two stents placed at Manatee Memorial.“- John Chambliss
CT Heart Score Test … it’s easy and quickThe noninvasive test takes approximately 15 minutes. Using specialized X-ray equipment, a scan produces cross-sectional images of the heart, while an EKG simultaneously measures electrical activity in the heart to evaluate calcium deposits in the heart and arteries.• No needles • No dyes • No liquids to swallow
CT Heart Score Test Makes a Difference for Brothers. “We’re so glad we had this test.”

from the president Jacki Dezelski, IOM President|CEO
As students returned to classrooms across the Manatee County region last month your Chamber was gearing up for a Fall season packed with workforce initiatives. We hear from you time and time again that your employees are your most valuable asset. Recruitment and retention require a big investment of time, money, and deliberate strategies that allow your business to grow and succeed.
This month your Chamber will be introducing local students to Manatee County businesses through two job shadow opportunities. We are partnering with UnidosNow to match 20 students with local employers to give them a better feel for careers within their interest inventory. Then a few days later we are once again partnering with USF Sarasota-Manatee to facilitate a one-day job shadow opportunity within the students’ chosen career fields.
Both of these job shadow initiatives are designed to help the students envision a successful career with Manatee County employers. The more connections we can make, the better for our long-term workforce pipeline. The business leaders who participated in our Spring job shadow experience were amazed at the talent and skills their hosted students possessed. Everyone remaked upon
Later this month we are hosting a panel discussion with local employers who have successfully hosted interns. It will be a great opportunity for companies that would like to consider hosting an intern for the first time - or for companies who would like to learn strategies to make their internships even more likely to result in keeping their interns in our community.
In October we will begin presenting our Big Bank Theory program at all six of our public high schools with senior classes. It’s designed to help elevate the financial literacy skills of these students. We will need more than 200 Chamber members to volunteer so that we can reach every high school senior. You’ll have your choice of high schools - Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto, Southeast, Braden River, Bayshore, and Manatee. I strongly encourage you to consider volunteering (it’s easy and fun - I promise!) Imagine the number of businesses these students will be exposed to that they might otherwise not have encountered. They’ll complete the activity experiencing how important personal finance is to their future success as well as gain a better understanding of how much their education impacts their career (and salary) opportunities.
We’ll end the year facilitating a series of industry tours that will give high school students an inside glimpse into businesses and careers in several targeted clusters (high skill trades, healthcare, manufacturing, etc,). They will end their tours with a visit to Manatee Technical College to have a hands-on look at the programs offered at our award-winning technical college.
Throughout the Fall we will also develop our State legislative platform and I am sure that workforce development-related topics will once again garner significant attention. Our first trip to Tallahassee will be in November and we look forward to being the voice of businesses in the greater Manatee County region.
An Eye on Workforce
USF students enjoyed job shadow opportunities in a number of fields including healthcare, finance, retail, marketing, law enforcement, and more.
The Big Bank Theory is a hands-on volunteer opportunity for Chamber members to impact the future. It's an eye-opening experience for students to work on balancing their monthly budget within their assigned salary and family profile. "I nenver knew you paid to have garbage picked up!"

Mitigating Storm Impacts to Businesses Chamber Advocates for a More Resilient and Prepared Community
Our community has seen its fair share of storm events causing severe damage to businesses and infrastructure throughout the County. It seems as if the “100-year storm” is much more frequent, and area businesses, infrastructure, and assets more vulnerable. The Chamber prioritizes our role as a conduit of information for business preparedness and recovery, and it’s vitally important for businesses to have a plan and be prepared for any type of emergency or disaster. We are also advocates for enhanced community and economic resiliency to mitigate potential storm damage. In collaboration with Manatee County Government, the Chamber has joined the Tampa Bay Regional Resilience Coalition, led by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. We believe that collaboration between local government, multi-jurisdictional organizations, businesses, and community organizations will help reduce risks associated with extreme weather.
In August, we had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion with Senator Marco Rubio at Port Manatee. We hit on a number of topics that are important to our business community, including water quality, transportation/infrastructure funding, and workforce housing. The topic of resiliency received the most attention. Chamber Board Chairman Bill Poulton asked the Senator to provide leadership on long-term investments and hardening of our infrastructure, adding that with climate change we’re seeing greater impacts to our coastal and inland areas. Senator Rubio pointed to the South Atlantic Coastal Study, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study that will plan resiliency projects for the Southeast.
As we work toward this long-term goal, we want to ensure the business community has the resources they need to be best prepared
for future storm events. We must be prepared for power outages, flooding, road closures, and other impacts that may lead to business closures and employees’ inability to work.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and according to the National Weather Service, the peak of the season is from mid-August to late October; however, deadly hurricanes can occur anytime in the hurricane season. Now is the time to review your preparedness plan and talk to your employees about your organization’s plans for potential disaster. After Hurricane Irma, the Chamber, Manatee County Government, Florida Power & Light, and other business and community leaders met with representatives from the International Economic Development Council to receive feedback and suggestions regarding business community preparedness. This was a debrief session to learn more about how the business community reacted, what we did well, our challenges, and opportunities.
The most important takeaway we received was that business owners need to create a disaster recovery plan and share emergency contact information with their employees. Employees are also strongly encouraged to have a disaster/emergency plan with their families.
We also learned how critical it is for a community-wide, post-storm assessment of
storm damage to businesses and determine where assistance is needed. While it is important to report the direct physical damage, it’s equally important to report indirect damages, such as your employees’ inability to come back to work, lost revenue, etc. This data is used by state and federal agencies to calculate the amount of financial assistance our community will need to recover, including assistance to businesses.
In order to provide assistance in the aftermath of a disaster, the County has created the Manatee County Government Business Recovery Directory. We encourage all businesses to register by visiting MyManatee.org/econdev. The information in this directory is kept private and used by County staff during recovery efforts only to notify businesses of which companies have resources available to assist after an emergency. From finding volunteers to obtaining meals, parking, and temporary office space, the information will help our community rebound and get back up and running after a disaster.
If you need assistance with your emergency preparedness plans, contact Bruno Kapacinskas, Business Resource Manager with the Redevelopment and Economic Opportunity Department Economic Development Division in Manatee County at 941-748-4501, ext. 6218.

Help Students Apply for AidFAFSA Informational Station Added to Big Bank TheoryIt is estimated $2.6 billion of free college money went unclaimed by 2018 graduates. Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA is an important step for students wishing to pursue post-secondary education. In Manatee County, 54.5% of our population has a low-income rate, yet we only have a 32.5% FAFSA completion rate. It is important for ALL students to complete the FAFSA regardless of income level because aid is available for multiple income levels and most colleges and universities use the information when determining scholarships and grants.
REACH Manatee, Manatee County’s Local College Access Network, is launching some initiatives to help increase our FAFSA completion rate. One way is by creating more awareness of FAFSA during the Chamber’s Big Bank Theory program. We have added a station for the students to gather important information about the application and receive a schedule of FAFSA labs being held at their school.
Volunteers are needed to help, not only at Big Bank Theory, but at the high school labs. This is one way our business members can help students pursue post-secondary degrees which helps develop our community’s future workforce. CareerSource Suncoast is hosting a FAFSA training on September 19 at 5:30 PM. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Terri at the Chamber at [email protected]. Based on interest we may be adding additional trainings at the Chamber.

CONGRATULATIONS 2019 SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS
The 40th Annual Small Business of the Year Awards Breakfast was held on Friday, August 23 at the Manatee Performing Arts Center in Bradenton. This community-wide celebration recognized successful small businesses and non-profit organizations for the crucial role they play in creating a quality, dynamic environment for visitors and residents to live, work, play, and do business.
“Our finalists exemplify the diversity, spirit, and community-mindedness that makes small business in Manatee County so special and so successful,” stated Bill Poulton, Tropicana Products and the Chairman of the Board of the Manatee Chamber.
“These employers and community leaders are an integral part of the fabric of our community, creating the unique culture that attracts and retains individuals and families to live and do business here. Small Business is Big Business in Manatee County - and it shows,” he said. Help us in congratu-lating the 2019 Manatee Small Business of the Year award winners:
Phil-Com Training& ConsultingTracy VanderneckCATEGORY I – SMALL BUSINESS UNDER $200,000
Big business comes in small packages, and Phil-Com’s one-woman business is no exception.Tracy provides tremendous benefits to her clients - and as a result, to our community, providing free resources and advice, and often putting in extra time at no cost if it means clients will receive the highest quality possible. Her company, Phil-Com, has a big mission. In fact, numerous missions, as this company assists other organizations with planning, fundraising, storytelling, research, and writing. Tracy’s business model supports the important work of helping children, feeding families, housing homeless animals, sharing music and art, protecting the environment, and more.
She is the sum total of the company’s customer service effort and gives back in many meaningful ways through her volunteerism for various programs and boards - one of which has led her to create a blueprint for non-profits to improve their inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in order to strengthen their organization and increase success.
Phil-Com strengthens our community - and perhaps our country - through Tracy’s national blogs by helping non-profits deliver their missions efficiently and effectively.
Veritas! PestManagementDon Goudy, Tami Goudy, and Bill GoudyCATEGORY II – SMALL BUSINESS $200,000 TO $700,000
Don, Tami, and Bill of Veritas! Pest Management believe in using the term citizenship as a verb - doing what they can to make Manatee County a terrific place to live, work, play, and raise a family. They are great community partners and they demonstrate this by serving on various committees, volunteering for civic projects and programs, and supporting non-profit organizations. This business team is able to do this while also realizing double-digit growth in revenue this past year. As experts in the industry, Don and team take time to train others in business best practices.
Clients describe Veritas as “trustworthy and conscientious,” “dedicated to outstanding service”, and that they are “always willing to go the extra mile” with “hands-on knowledge and personal attention to their customers' needs”. We would expect nothing less from this company that was named after the Roman goddess of truth and promises to serve with “Honor and Integrity.”

Home Helpers of BradentonJonathan MarshCATEGORY III – SMALL BUSINESS $700,000 TO $2 Million
Johnathan Marsh of Home Helpers of Bradenton prioritizes taking care of his employees by offering monthly bonuses, creative benefits, and ensuring competitive pay by regularly performing a competitive analysis of similar businesses. He’s also instituted a monthly employee recognition program to highlight exceptional work. Refining processes and procedures is part of doing business for this company, as they regularly take feedback from clients to improve their business model.
Johnathan started his business because he learned that the caregiving burden is real, and it impacts the family as much as the patient. His passion for helping some of the most vulnerable, and often ignored, members of our society is also real. He treats these clients with the dignity and respect we would give our own family members, and with the same dignity and respect we would expect ourselves. Now that’s being in it for all the right reasons. As one of his clients stated, “He is a problem-solver who bends over backward to keep our family informed and delivers unparalleled service.”
U.S. Tent Rental & Linens by the SeaBrian Boyle, Tim Boyle, and Cliff BoyleCATEGORY IV – SMALL BUSINESS OVER $2 MILLION
Brian, Tim, and Cliff of U.S. Tent know their priorities, with a focus on customer service and taking good care of their employees. As this family company grew from humble beginnings to a dominate player in their industry and increased revenue over time, they directed these gains toward creating a robust compensation and benefits package for their employees. Believing “if you take care of your employees, they will take care of you,” this company has realized tremendous growth.
Community contributions come in many forms from U.S. Tent. They prioritize giving back to local non-profit organizations that work hard to provide much needed services in our community, providing well over $100,000 in contributions to the local community last year. They also contribute to our quality of life by implementing strong eco-friendly practices and products.
The number of awards and recognition this family team has received shows how well respected and committed this business is in the community. Starting out with one tent and one old truck, U.S. Tent has one shot at getting it right each time, often at high-profile and once-in-a-lifetime events.
TurningPointsAdell Erozer and Mark DeHaanNON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
A strong, healthy organization takes care of its own, and Turning Points is no exception as they work regularly to ensure the work environment is safe and welcoming for staff, clients and volunteers, providing health and wellness programing, annual recognition events, and staff retreats.
They have received a coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator, a nation-wide charity evaluator, demonstrating strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency to the community and donor base. In just this past calendar year, volunteers for Turning Points have logged 55,602 hours of service, with in-kind value of over $2 million– all to better our community.
Adell, Mark, and their team serve an immense community need. Through community collaboration, they create healthier lives for our residents as they provide leadership in developing strategies to tackle the complicated issue of homelessness. They serve this immense need with the help of approximately 150 volunteers per month. Daily they help their clients, often in crisis, maintain housing, find employment, get basic needs addressed, and improve their health so they are able to work.
