In what may commonly be consid-ered as a cup of tea for women, hairdress-ing and beauty therapy were dared by two men competitors from Ilocos Region who equally aimed gold finish in the pre-qual-ification selection process of team Philip-pines for the ASEAN Skills Competition happening in Korea Philippines Vocation-al Training Center Buhisan, Tibungco, Davao City on April 30-May 4, 2018. Maxima Technical and Skills Train-ing Institute graduates John Leonard Ra-mos and Reylom Cruz fearlessly showed competence in skill No. 29 Hairdressing and skills no. 30 Beauty Therapy, respec-tively. Twenty year-old Ramos, disclosed in an interview that he is unleashing his best to complete all the tasks incorporated in the test package, though he admitted that the competition experience is slightly “nakaka-tense, nakaka-excite na kinaka-bahan ka”, considering that his rivals also aimed top places in the game. When asked who influenced him on hairdressing, he openly shared that his father and brother are barbers who taught him initial techniques from which he honed through constant practice and countless hairdressing exposures since he was 15 years old. “Family ng barber po kami, kaya hindi na bago sa akin ang pag-style ng buhok”, he said. Ramos furthered that at first he only gave it a try but now he ended up loving more of it especially that he is earning from the payment of his friends and

neighbours for hairdressing services. On the other hand, Reylom Cruz he first appreciated beauty therapy told when he witnessed his high school classmate who also joined the 2015 provincial and regional in Ilocos. Cruz proudly shared that being a gay is his advantage since doing make-up is a skill he considered not just a pure hobby but also his most convenient source of income. “Sumasideline ako pag may mga wedding, hair and make-up, marami akong raket”, he said. Cruz said that his family fully ac-cepted him for being gay and supported him in his career as a make-up artist except his older brother who is much against who said that his make-up raket will not amount to anything. “Nung provincial at regional skills com-petition nabubuhay pa yong kuya ko, yong kuya ko na yon is hindi nya ako matanggap na ganito”, he added. Cruz shared that he had admitted him-self as a BSBA student before, but he stopped for he does not feel happiness where his heart is longing to pursue beauty therapy considering

that “dream ko ang pagiging make-up artist kaya pinush ko to”. He also said he wanted his deceased brother to be proud of him proving that his make-up career is something that can make him into someone, hence he is giving his full blast in the competition in hope to the ASEAN stage.

Rex Ian Vincent M. Sustiverio and Arnold M. Talaboc of Region XI vowed to catapult the opposing joint forces of Jared Warren L. Delos Santos and Kim Paulo S. Orquia of National Capital Region in the Mechatronics contest during the Philippine National Skills Competition held at the Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center Buhisan, Davao City calendared on April 30-May 4, 2018. Unlike beauty therapy and hairdress-ing competitions with three repre-sentatives from Regions I, III and XI, Mechatronics is a face-off only of two regions. Due to limited competition materials with only one set of complete tools and equipment, the two regions spent a round robin completion of the tasks with Davao Region which started the third task while NCR had the first task. The first and the second task focused on the assembling, programming,

commissioning, maintenance and optimization of a handling station with electrical drive and stack magazine while the third and the fourth tasks as-sembling, programming, commissioning, mainte-nance and optimization of a small production line including handling station with stack magazine. In an interview, Susteverio and Talaboc said that they will do their best in the competition to finally achieve their dream of entering in the ASEAN arena especially that both have supportive fami-lies as well as their expert who always inspire them to win.

Sleepless nights. Deadliest dead-lines. Cooked under pressure. You name it? We have it!

Being a correspondent is never an easy job. It demands not just writing or layouting or photography skills, but passion and commitment.

Being trainees enrolled in Information Processing and members of Techno Eye Center Publication of KorPhil Davao is both a responsibility and an opportunity of a lifetime.

In our shoulders lie a required gigantic responsibility of reliable journalism that is fearless and dignified, balance and accurate, fair and square in report-ing our views and news, in all stories we cover.

Techno Eye stands to “see what lies beneath, leaving no stories untold” by covering stories that capture hu-man interest. We do it, without being told. And that is journalism. Proactive journalism.

Our sincere gratitude to some people who helped us in our growth and development as writers during this World Skills Philippines Davao City. To our center librarian, Jessa Jessah B. Elevencione, who polished the grammatical erratum of our articles, to Engr Jeric F. Bilita who lent us constructive criti-cisms in improving our writing and lay-outing presentations, to our advisers Sir Mario Dela Cerna and Ma’am Ruth De Castro and our center administrator Egmedio O. Valdez Jr., for their support in countless aspects from the materials we need, the food we eat, the

pieces of advice we get, among oth-ers; all of you are our inspiration.

We regretted not that we became members of this organization even if others would hurl some discour-agement at us. We thanked instead that we got those sleepless nights while being cooked under pressure to beat deadliest deadline simply because we saw it in ourselves that we became better.

Someone said in the opening ceremony that the competitors who have much sweat in their training, have bled less in the battle. So do

us in the publication.

All the challenges that have impeded along our ways in our service in the publication helped us improve not just our writing skills but it also helped us built new acquain-tances and friendship, and enhanced our interpersonal skills as we deal with people of all walks of life during the interview. Not to mention that we became better team players who can work in a group of diverse person-ality.

These are the memories worth remembering!
