Congratulations to our Potentate, Richard Spaulding, and the rest of our hard working Divan. As we embark on the new year, it’s time to start thinking of how we can step up to the plate and accept Illustrious Sir Spaulding’s challenge for each of us to sign up 1 new member this year. Who do you know that will make a good Mason? … a good Shriner? Sit down and think about it and start with a plan and if you need help on ideas to approach your friend, call me, I have plenty of information to help you get it done.Yours In The Faith,Richard Weaver Membership Chairman

Scottish Rite News

By Noble Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCHThe Scottish Rite confers twenty-nine degrees, the 4th through the 32nd, originating from old French Masonic rituals probably birthed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Rewritten by Illustrious Albert Pike 330 in the 1850s, the degrees have been updated and revised over the years into their modern state. The three degrees of the “Blue Lodge” fall within the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge system, so the Rite does not confer them. However, the Rite does possess its own introductory degrees, referred to as the “Red Lodge” degrees and they are worthy of investigation and study. Among the objectives of the Rite is the continual self-development and education of the individual Brother. The Rite is classed into four bodies, each with its own particular emphasis. The Lodge of Perfection includes the 4th through the 14th degrees. They tell a more expansive version of the Hiramic Legend because the Rite’s third degree has a different narrative than the Blue Lodge’s. These degrees portray events occurring subsequent to the third degree and deal differently with the Ruffians. Additional characters are introduced into our story line and their roles developed to good effect. These degrees espouse lessons of morality and virtue for the individual and society. While ostensibly they simply tell a longer or more expansive legend than our Third Degree, their subject and focus is individual character development. Ultimately, their theme might be described as encouragement to “know thyself.”The Chapter of Rose Croix includes the 15th through 18th degrees. Its work redirects our attention outward, toward living rightly and justly, charitably conducting ourselves with our fellow men and searching for knowledge or a fuller awareness of Deity. These degrees are at once religious, moral and philosophical. The Council of Kadosh includes the 19th through 30th degrees. The Council is composed of the knightly or chivalric degrees – but each is intensely mystical and symbolic. The 29th degree, Scottish Knight of

St. Andrew, depicts (one of) the founding legends of Freemasonry. The 31st and 32nd degree comprise the fourth body, the Consistory. The former degree returns our attention to the self-examination and self-reflection inculcated in the Lodge of Perfection. It is a powerful degree, reminding us that the path to immortality is more than the mere outward appearance of piety. The 32nd Degree culminates with the exploration of the Royal Secret and the Holy Doctrine. The Scottish Rite meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 PM, preceded by a 6:00 PM dinner. At the February 10th meeting, Brother AJ Ahrens 320 will present an educational paper. The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred on March 29th and April 5th. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org.

We achieved the goal of three new Nobles and were honored to attend the January 4th membership appreciation Bar-b-que at Hooper’s Hollow. Winter has attacked the Sunshine State in force, but this is does not compare to the frozen tundra 14 of your clowns just returned from. New England was cold outside but the fellowship with great friends and the opportunity to learn more about clowning warmed the hearts of all that attended NECI. When you watch your clowns perform and compare their makeup and costumes to other clown units, it is easy to understand why they make the trip to NECI each year. Each clown comes home with something new or an addition to their makeup or costume, especially after they meet the Chief. Balloons up to the clowns that take their time and finances to travel and learn to be the best clowns they can, then share that knowledge with others. So, they also can learn and improve.Clowns we have a big event February. Fair Day at the Florida State Fair is on Wednesday the 12th. We will attend this function in costume, so keep an eye for the Boss Clown’s E-mails and remember; if it’s not fun, don’t do it!

EGYPT CLOWNS By Noble J. Lee “Smurf” Cornett

The Highlanders hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years.2013 was a tremendously busy but rewarding year for the Highlanders as we were blessed to participate in some tremendously patriotic activities. Among these were several “Welcome Home” events honoring the World War II Veterans both in Clearwater and Lakeland. These large groups of World War II Veterans which made up the flights visited our most important national memorials and monuments, including their WWII Memorial.

HIGHLANDERSBy Noble Bill Newton

Another tremendously moving event was the Highlanders participation in the Iraqi Memorial Dedication in Veterans Park off of US 301. This beautiful and befitting memorial will honor our fallen heroes from the Iraq War.Other events we participated in included the Memorial Day and the U. S. Veterans Day Services held throughout the Bay Area for our fallen heroes and Gold Star Families. Additionally, the Canadian Remembrance Day Service at MacDill AFB remembering the United States, British, Canadian and Australian fallen from previous wars was a tremendously moving event!!!We also participated in another very important event. “Homes for Our Troops” builds specially adapted homes for our troops with disabilities. SSG Alex Dillmann received the keys to his new home during a Key Presentation Ceremony and we were able to participate in the raising of the U.S. Flag over his new home during that event. In addition, we participated in the USCENTCOM “Coalition Night” at MacDill AFB. This is a gathering of all the Coalition Nations’ personnel assigned to USCENTCOM along with their families. Each nation’s personnel are dressed in their native dress and share food, drink and culture from their country. It was a tremendous experience and much appreciated by all attending.Further, we participated again this year in the International Folk Fair held in the St. Petersburg Vinoy Park. This was another international gathering of people from numerous nations. Personnel from each nation were again dressed in native attire, discussed their cultures and folk art and dance, and shared their native foods. A parade of countries through the park was a highlight of the weekend. An again this year, we participated in the Great American Teach-in at Hudson Middle School. What a reward! The kids were a joy, interested, and appreciative. They were very inquisitive about the bagpipe and its history. The Highlanders also continued to participate in all the normal Gasparilla and city and surrounding communities’ parades as well as numerous Christmas parades throughout the area.We can’t forget the Tartan Ball, our premier fund-

raising event for the year that we had at the Event Factory. It is always a tremendous success for the Highlanders! All in all, it was quite a year for us. It is indeed a pleasure for the Highlanders to give back a little for the sacrifices all these individuals and groups of warriors have made to their country, the Great Land of America. It’s humbling and tremendously rewarding to be able to participate in events such as these.Indeed, the Highlanders are always on the lookout for additional prospective pipers, drummers and new members for our unit. If you have any desire or have ever considered bagpiping, drumming or merely socializing with a great group of guys, then we are the unit for you. Even if you just enjoy the pipes and drums and would like to be a part of an outstanding unit, talk to anyone in our unit. We would love to further your experience in both piping and drumming but also in having a good time.

The Legion of Honor sure looked good leading the field in posting of our colors at the East-West Shrine game. They also had a fantastic tailgate party led my George Fenno. The Legions of Honor from Sahib and Bahia as well as the young marines were fed very well. It was again our Honor to post the colors for our new Potentate, Richard Spaulding at his party. The Legion will also post the colors at Tampa Bay downs on March 29th. This is a truly fantastic day at the races. We have our own room and everyone that attended last year had a ball. If you are a veteran you may join the Legion and still belong to another unit. We are a band of brothers and always remember “IT IS AN HONOR TO BELONG TO THE LEGION OF HONOR”We have our new Officers for the year after our Change of Command.Commander-John Kimmel1st Lt. The new Commander cooked a delicious meal and the ceremony was very moving. We appreciated the Divan for being there and for Noble Juan Martinez for taking the picturesIn closing we had a fantastic 2013 and 2014 will be a better one. Without a doubt our Ladies are the best and we owe them everything.

Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Richard Spaulding and our Divan on their election, we look forward to working with you this year. Our new Oriental Guide, Reggie Guier, has hit the ground running. We wish him great success and pledge to support him through his Divan years and beyond.February is here which means that the annual Mid Winter Meeting did not happen, no one was there and there was no fun to be had by anyone, because as we all know what happens there stays there. We did, however present our proposed FASMC Bylaw change for competition and are waiting for the results to get back to us. It was great to see Rand back in town for a few days and see him get appointed to the bottom of the FASMC line. He will make us all proud.February also means it is time to get serious about competition practice, especially since we have some cars available and 2 new Midgets to ride them. We are really close to having that 8 man competition team to go to All Florida in late April-early May. Let’s communicate our availability to our Director, Dewey, so we can schedule all of our practices. Room update, I will be in the room on Monday, February 17th at 6:00 PM to change the light fixtures. If anyone can come in to help, please let me know. It should not take a lot of time. We also need to figure out when we will be getting together to do the floor. That will be a bit more involved and I suggest that we do it on couple of consecutive Saturdays. Garage News, We have a few cars available and need to move some stuff around to get more efficient use out of the available floor space, that also needs to be a Saturday work day. I want to take this opportunity to

The Motor Corps is looking forward to working with you this year. Our 2014 president Shane Moore is looking forward to a great year of motorcycle riding, parades and competition. We are all looking forward to the 2014

Thank Noble Arnie Walker for his years of dedication and service to the unit as Director and keeping our cars running. Arnie has retired as a driver, but is still an active member of our unit. If it were not for what Arnie, Mike C. and Mike R. did during the lean years, we would not have a unit to belong to. Thank you all Nobles.Broken Spindle Alert! Since we have not had any events or practice since the Safety Harbor Parade, Dewey still wears the spindle proudly. For those of you who don’t know, our “Broken Spindle” award goes to the Midget who last broke down in a parade or practice. It is always passed on with Brotherly Love and Affection as well as a little bit of ribbing. Awards like this are popular among FASMC units. The Motor Patrol has their “Crash Dummy” The Motor Corps has their “Pickle” the Pharaohs have their “Skunk” We all do it and we’ve all earned it. In another life, I dropped my bike 3 times in a Christmas parade and earned the Skunk. Noble Toby Reese was happy to transfer ownership to me since he had owned it for over 6 months … I owned for the next 5 months and was happy to turn it over after All Florida when Joe LeClaire dropped his bike in a parking lot while keeping an eye on passing talent right before our celebratory dinner.Until next month, keep our Hospital Kids, staff and Doctors as well as our Divan in your prayers. Put the pedal to the metal and keep the rubber side down.

MOTOR CORPS By Noble Andy Foster

FASMC Midwinter. FSA is scheduled for May 1st thru the 4th of 2014 in Cocoa Beach. Preparations for the 2014 FASMC competitions in Cocoa Beach are underway. With lots of practice we hope to ready. We know that there will be plenty of competition again this year. Plan to attend and enjoy the fellowship and friendly competitions. The Motor Corps will be starting our weekly competition practice every Sunday starting in February. Come out and watch. Bring your Motorcycle. After practice we typically practice our riding skills. This is a great opportunity to practice your skills. The Motor Corps has some very good riders that are always willing to share their knowledge and experience.

What a wonderful parade day we had in Safety Harbor on December 21st ...the sky was clear and sunny, weather warm, and loads of parade watchers along the route. The Band enjoyed riding with the Provost Guard, who, by the way, did an admirable job in reconditioning the trailer. At the December Ceremonial, I thought we had a couple of possible new Nobles to join the Puffers and Pounders, but one decided to affiliate with another musical unit. It’s our loss …but their gain. The important thing is that he’s becoming active.I guess my first 2014 boo-boo in the January Sands, was that I neglected to congratulate Noble Bill Martin on having been elected to the Band’s Presidency, and to First Lady Christine. Noble Bobby Appleton remains Secretary/Treasure, and Yours Truly as Vice President.Congratulations too to Egypt’s new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Richard Spaulding and his Divan. The Band wishes you God Speed, Fair Winds and Following Seas for the coming year.Happy February Birthday to Lady Billie Brantley on the 19th.Remember the kids in the hospitals.

TIN LIZZIES By Noble David White, P.P.

Greetings and a Happy New Year from the Tin Lizzies. We also send best wishes to our 2014 Potentate, Illustrious Sir, Richard Spaulding. May I take this opportunity to thank those Nobles who came to the hospital last month to enjoy the visit of the East/West players who were as usual, great fun. I thought we should have some history in our monthly article. The 1st Model T was built 105 years ago in Detroit, Michigan. Henry Ford had the foresight to use the very first assembly production line and was ultimately producing a car every 93 minutes. Interestingly at the very outset black was not available since black paint was not durable. Instead the colors gray, green blue and red were the order of the day. The “any color as long as it is black” policy didn’t start until 1914. The car had three gears; two forward and one reverse. Kevlar was used in the production of brake linings. Well, I suppose if it will stop a bullet, it will also stop a car. In 1911 the car was also being produced in Trafford Park Manchester, England, and in Canada. Production reached 15 million in 1927 and this number was not surpassed until 1972 when the Volkswagen Beetle took top spot. So there!

Thanks for listening,

This month is busy with the Super Bowl Party, Showmen’s Parking, Fair Day, Hospital Days, and Memorial Service.Congratulations to all the newly elected and appointed officers for Egypt Shrine. Especially to our very own Provost Guard officers for 2014.And don’t forget to support the 2014 Circus with your Ads and Provost Guard parking and security. See you at Raymond James Stadium, April 10-13, 2014.

The gates open at 7:30 and there will be coffee and donuts available. Wear your Fez and help conduct some of our disadvantaged kids through the fair and rides. At 7:30 PM we will have our Stated meeting at the Stu Lang Activities Building. Sick around and stay up later for a fun time at the Fairgrounds as the Showmen have their Jamboree at 11:00 PM. If you haven’t been, you won’t believe how much you’ve been missing. If you are not a member yet, and want to learn more about what is going on at Egypt Shrine, stop by and enjoy some great company.

44 O January 2014 O Sands Magazine

Dear Nobles:First, I want to thank Illustrious Sir Richard Spaulding for re-appointing me to serve as your director of the Sands Magazine. I really enjoy the creative process and, though I started this as a favor because I did not want an appointment 3 years ago, I could not imagine not doing this. On the same note, I have to realize that if something unexpected were to occur, Egypt Shrine would not have the Sands magazine until someone else figured out how to do what I do. If anyone wants to learn, please let me know and I’ll be happy to share the duties as you acclimate to the system. Is everyone ready to hunker down? This is our busiest time of the year and we need your help. With Hospital Days, The Potentate’s Ball, Fair Day, The Showmen’s Jamboree, the Dade City parade and our Memorial service kicking off the first month of Illustrious Sir Spaulding’s year, we will be going around the clock to get everything else that is going on this month up to Egypt Shrine standards.Remember that we are trying to have Family Friendly events at our Oasis Lounge to make sure that we get the maximum bang for our membership dollar. Come out and spend some time on Fridays and you will be hooked. Where else can you go and get the drink prices, family friendly atmosphere and great times? We have even changed the club room, thanks to 1st Lady Trish’s program last year. We have 2 large flat screen TV’s in the room as phase 1 of the project and are planning to keep improving it until it flows over into the Oasis Lounge. Come out and check out the changes … and enjoy your Oasis Lounge.Until next month, please keep our Hospital kids in your prayers. May God bless you and keep you safe.
