DG Message The weekend of 4 th and 5 th February 2017 was a memorable one for Lions Districts C1 & C2. On Saturday 4 th February 2017 we saw the launching of our new mobile skin cancer screening unit. The unit was officially launched by the Governor of SA his Excellency the honourable Hieu Van Le. The event took place at the Torrens Parade ground in Adelaide and was well attended by Lions representing both Districts C1 and C2. Apart from the actual launch members were offered a free BBQ and plenty of musical entertainment. Congratulations must be extended to the skin cancer group members for organizing and managing the day. My understanding is that at least 39 screenings have already been booked for the next 12 months. The flow on effect from this is that of course more lives will be saved as a result of the detection of serious lesions requiring immediate attention. This is a wonderful community service of which every Lion involved can be justifiably proud. The very next day, Sunday 5 th February saw the chartering of a new Lions club at Lameroo. This club chartered with 43 new members with 2 new members being actually inducted literally an hour or so just prior to the chartering ceremony. It was a wonderful day which was well attended by members from all over our District and had been well organised by the new club members. The down side of all this good news was that Kay and I missed it all. We were both confined to bed for several days with severe gastro and the flu. This left us both pretty weak and almost totally lacking in energy. I can report though that we are both nearly back to full strength and have been able to resume our DG duties. GMT and GLT Coordinator’s positions The current incumbents of these two positions are Denis Haseldine and Mick Allinson respectively. Both appointments are initially made for a 3 year tenure. At the conclusion of the period of tenure and in the normal course of events nominations for both positions are called for and are considered by the then current DG team (DG, 1VDG and 2VDG). From these nominations an appointment to each role is made by the DG team which is recommended to LCI for confirmation. The current tenure for both roles will conclude on 30th June 2017 but unfortunately we are not really in a position to call for nominations to fill these roles. We have been informed that the duties of both roles will be the subject of discussion at the Board of International Directors meeting to be held during March 2017. Apparently changes are being considered but no indication has been provided as to the nature of these changes. Our advice has been to hold off from making any such final appointments until after the International Board meeting. Rather than delay this matter totally until after the International Board meeting, I have invited any member interested in taking on either role to submit to me either by e mail, normal mail or just a phone call, an expression of interest in undertaking either role. I have emphasized that this will NOT constitute an application for either role. Once the outcomes of the International Board meeting are known then steps will be taken to call for applications for both roles based on these outcomes. Early contact will be made with those members who have submitted an expression of interest.

Leadership Forum

On Sunday 26th February 2017 a leadership Forum was held in the Hahndorf Community Hall. The forum was primarily aimed at members considering taking on a leadership role of some sort at club level. It was deliberately held at this time of the year to coincide with clubs holding their election meetings over the next few weeks. Those who attended were a mix of Lions representing a whole range of experience and membership as a Lion. Several had already been club presidents and had progressed onto a cabinet position whilst others were still within their first two years as a Lion but openly admitted they had a strong interest in progressing into club leadership roles. During the course of discussion it became abundantly clear that very little attention is being given to the development and education of individual members at club level. When a new member is inducted they are required to respond to a number of questions as part of their induction ceremony. Similarly their sponsor is also required to respond to a number of questions many of which revolve around the ongoing development of the new member. Clearly this personal “one on one” type of individual development is not occurring or if it is there was certainly no evidence offered during the forum. It was emphasized at the forum that the topics covered were not aimed at incoming club presidents particularly. The primary concept was to provided attendees with some basic information relative to leadership regardless of the role held. Many roles within clubs require some degree of “leadership.” These roles would include the chairing of any type of subcommittee including any of the vice president roles.

In every survey conducted by Lions relative to why members leave the organization, poorly conducted meetings will regularly be nominated as the major cause for such action. Whilst this would be seen as being primarily directed at club meetings, I have no doubt that the running of subcommittee meetings would also have some bearing on this decision. The “newer” Lions members who attended the forum were most appreciative of the information provided and were in total agreement that their attendance was beneficial and had most certainly provided them with information that will greatly assist them as they progress as Lions. The more “senior” Lions all agreed that they too had enjoyed the forum and had also gained some useful advice. Given the feedback received from this forum it is possible that another forum may be held in the very near future. This will hopefully be held out of the central geographical area provided a suitable venue can be located. Nobody knows everything, we can all learn something new and the best part of these forums is the networking and interaction with other Lions from whom we can all learn something new. More experienced Lions can share their knowledge with the newer Lions and the ultimate outcome should be more effective and efficiently administered Lions clubs which will in turn reduce the loss of membership numbers.

E Mail addresses About one third of our member clubs currently operate through a members private email address. This is fine until such time as the incumbent member is no longer a club officer or sadly if and when the member suddenly becomes unavailable. They may be overseas on an extended holiday, they may be hospitalized, they may move home etc, etc. Under such circumstances it means that no club business can be transacted unless another member has access to this personal email address. This is of course unwanted and inefficient. In an attempt to remedy this situation a lot of work has been done at MD level and I have re printed below an email recently received from Rob Oerlemans, CEO of Lions Australia relative to this topic:- “The MD201 National Office are ready to roll out Phase 1 of the standardised email address project. With the assistance of Microsoft, and some generously donated licenses, every Club will be issued with a @lions.org.au email account using Office 365. Nominated members of the Club’s committee will be able to access the mail account via any generic web browser or mail program on both fixed and mobile devices. Moving forward, this will become the designated email address for all Club correspondence across the organisation. The National Office are seeking a progressive and enthusiastic District to participate in Phase 1. Please reply with your expression of interest after consultation with your current Cabinet and DGE to [email protected]

The earliest our District Cabinet could consider volunteering to act as the “guinea pig” for this proposal would be at our next Cabinet meeting to be held on Saturday 29th April 2017. By then I’m sure one of the other Districts will have put their hand up, however I will include it as an agenda item for that meeting at which time I may have more information to pass on.

Flinders Uni Campus Club

During the period 20th to 22nd February 2017 Denis Haseldine, Harry Tillyer, John Austin, myself and several interested Flinders Uni students staffed a Lions stall at the Uni “O” day. (Orientation Day) Our stall was one of dozens that participated and the aim of all stall holders was basically to recruit students to whatever group was being represented. We collated 160 names of students who might be interested in joining a Flinders Uni Lions Club. How many will actually follow through remains to be seen. Many of the students recruited are from overseas and it was surprising to note how many saw this as an opportunity to take something constructive other than their education, back to their countries of origin. A follow up meeting will be arranged with those students indicating an interest in forming a Lions club and it is genuinely hoped that another Lions club for District C2 can be formed at that meeting. To assist with the formation of Campus clubs many concessions have been made re membership fees and joining fees at all levels of administration and this has most certainly been an attractive feature for the students. Centenary Projects

Page 4: The official Newsletter for MD 201 District C2 March 2017 ... · March DG Message The weekend of 4th and 5th February 2017 was a memorable one for Lions Districts C1 & C2. On Saturday

During the course of my club visits and via other means of contact I have encouraged member clubs to host, as part of Lions centenary celebrations, some form of Lions awareness event during the first week of April 2017. I’m aware that many clubs have taken my request on board and are working hard to undertake such an event during this time frame. I’m also aware that some member clubs have planned such an event but as a result of their busy schedule it will take place outside of this time frame. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those clubs that are undertaking such an event and to those clubs that have not yet considered this matter, I would urge them to do so as soon as possible. Several other districts around Australia have planned a similar strategy but have confined their activities to a single day. I found this to be too restrictive hence my alternative suggestion covering a whole week. Regardless of when such an event takes place I would request that following completion of the event, all participating clubs provide some basic details to our District Centenary projects chair Melinda Fogden on [email protected]. 20/20 Multiple District Convention At our last cabinet meeting a small steering committee was appointed to work with C1 representatives with a view to putting together a bid for the 2020 Multiple District Convention. I am pleased to be able to report that this group has commenced to meet and to discuss some of the obvious basic requirements as provided by Lions Australia CEO. Contact has been made with the Adelaide Convention Bureau from whom much valuable information has already been received regarding potential venues, hotels, room availability etc etc. At the time of writing this report an invitation had been extended for on-site inspections of many of these locations but which have not yet been undertaken. I would hope to be able to provide further specific reports in later editions of The Gov. Without making any commitment of any kind at this early stage it is interesting to note that the bid year being considered is 2020. In Australia we currently have a very popular cricket program known as the Big Bash which is played in a 20/20 format. Given the need for any convention venue to be able to host up to 1500 delegates, potential convention venues are quite restricted and will most likely be constrained to the central business district of Adelaide. As part of any convention other venues need to be identified to host various dinners and other similar events. With the “2020” nomenclature as mentioned above wouldn’t Adelaide Oval make a great venue for a gala dinner? Just saying, just thinking out loud, no commitment should be inferred but what an opportunity!!!!!! The steering committee will be working hard to develop a bid that can be put to the floor of the 2017 MD Convention to be held in Hobart in early May this year. Nothing is guaranteed but to date there has been no indication of any other District considering such a bid so provided our bid can be shown to provide conventioneers with a program delivered for an acceptable financial consideration then chances are we could be successful. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Around the Clubs

Broken Hill As its major fundraiser each year, the Broken Hill Lions Club holds a New Car Raffle Draw at the Westside Plaza Shopping Centre. Lions Club members were regularly rostered on to sell tickets each day in the months leading up to Christmas. This year the winning ticket was drawn by the man in red, Santa Claus, in front of a large crowd of Saturday morning shoppers.

Santa rolling the barrel! Lions members selling tickets. Co-ordinator Trevor Odgers was extremely pleased with the fantastic result of another successful Lions fundraising project!

Ridley Carolyn Kilpatrick inducted Rose Rose and Ron Kelertas into the Lions Club of Ridley on Sunday 19 February at the zone meeting. Welcome to the Lions family

Waikerie

Life-threatening cancers detected Article by SONIA FOWLER published in the River News

THE Lions Club of Waikerie held its free skin screening at the Waikerie Medical Centre last Saturday and Sunday under the banner of the Lions Cancer Institute of Western Australia. Spokesperson for the project and Waikerie Lions Club cabinet director Joe Vikor said the local appointments were booked out almost as soon as they opened. “We had about 80 people we couldn’t accommodate due to a full appointment book, so it shows there is a real need for this in our community, and it was pleasing to see people taking the time out for their health,” Mr Vikor said. “Funding for this project comes primarily from Lions Clubs and other donations and there is no charge to the patient for the service. “Of the appointments we had available we managed to screen 221 community members over the two days.

Page 7: The official Newsletter for MD 201 District C2 March 2017 ... · March DG Message The weekend of 4th and 5th February 2017 was a memorable one for Lions Districts C1 & C2. On Saturday

“Our results showed 38 of the people screened had life-threatening lesions detected, while 54 people were referred to their general practitioner (GP).” The screening personnel involved at the Waikerie Lions Club free screening days were Siva Lowings, Chris Lowings and Colin Beauchamp, all from Western Australia. “These three personnel have completed advanced courses overseas in dermocopy presented by Giuseppe Argenziano, Jergan Kreusch and Horacio Cabo,” Mr Vikor said. “Giuseppe Argenziano is credited with being the author of the three-point and seven-point checks. “Both Lowings and Beauchamp all have been screening for a number of years, having over 30 years combined experience.” At the Waikerie skin screenings no formal prognosis or diagnosis was offered to the community members screened, but any patient believed to have an area of skin that requires further investigation was handed a sheet with an indication of the area of concern shown on a skeletal drawing. The person screened was then urged to make an urgent appointment with his/her nominated general GP to have the area of concern investigated further. Mr Vikor said it was disappointing to see that out of the 221 people screened at Waikerie that only 120 had never had a skin screening before. “The Riverland has one of the highest rates of skin cancers in Australia so this number was surprising. “We recommend anyone who hasn’t been tested and think they have a suspect lesion to see their GP,” he said. “Seeing a GP on a regular basis would prevent some of the problems.” The Lions Club skin screenings act as a filtering agency; and its referral rate averages between 27 per cent and 30 per cent when 100 patients are screened, and 63 of those would normally not have any suspect lesions. The protocols under which the Lions screening program operates are designed to support local medical practitioners aimed at leaving the nominated medical practitioner more time to deal with the patients who have problems rather than looking at patients with clear skin.

Gambier City

Lions Youth of the Year Program conducted in Mount Gambier. The 2016 Lions Youth of the year program was conducted in the form of a Combined Mount Gambier Club final hosted by the Lions Club of Gambier City.

Three Mount Gambier High School students participated under the guidance of teacher Marianna Van der Berg.

Year 12 Tiana represented Lions Club of Mount Gambier, Year 11 Sahra represented Lions Club of Gambier City and Year 10 Brodie represented the Mount Gambier Lioness Club.

The program was conducted in two stages.

In the first stage the applicants were assessed on their written application and a personal interview. Attributes considered were leadership, sporting & cultural involvement, academic performance, general knowledge and personality.

In the interview the applicants also responded to questions such as “Using your imagination, please tell us in what way the world will have changed in 20 years?”, “How are social media and text messaging changing the way you communicate with your friends?”, What do you think would be the pros and cons of a proposed sugar tax on reducing obesity?” and “If you spend a day with anyone in the world, who would it be and what would you do with them?”

The second part of the program was a formal Public Speaking program held after dinner at the Community RSL in front of an audience of 50 people.

Each applicant spoke firstly to two impromptu questions for two minutes. The impromptu question topics were, ‘It’s another blackout and phone or Internet for the weekend, what will you do?” and “:”What would you like to see happen to increase sustainability?”

The responses were generally strong and to the point demonstrating the ability to think quickly and approach issues from a number alternative paths.

The final segment of the Public Speaking session were prepared 5 minutes speeches on topics of their own choice.

Tiana spoke of her “”Young Endeavour Experience”, Sahra on “Happiness” and Brodie on “Friends and Family”. The speeches were well received by the audience and they all displayed strength and depth of character, personal resilience to hardship and empathy for those around them.

The Youth of the Year winners for ach club were: Tiana Olle - Lions Club of Mount Gambier, Sahra Rowhina-Farid - Lions Club of Gambier City and Brodie Musgrove - Mount Gambier Lioness Club.

The Youth of the Year Public Speaking winner was Sahra Rowhina-Farid.

All three will now move on to the Youth of the Year Regional Final that will be held in Mount Gambier on Sunday 5th March in the rear function room of the Community RSL. The Public Speaking session gets under way at 1.45pm.

At this regional final there will be between 8-10 students representing Lions, Leo & Lioness Clubs in Zones 10 & 11 of from the Lions District 201 C2. This covers the area from Naracoorte across to Kingston down to Port McDonnell.

The same judging process will be used, though there will be only 1 overall Youth of the Year winner and one Public Speaking winner at this final.

The judging panel headed by Lachlan Wookey, Manager Business Banking NAB, representing NAB as major sponsor of the Lions Youth of the Year program, Alison Brash Community Development Officer, City of Mount Gambier and Keith Cowling Coordinator Bunninghs Warehouse Mount Gambier commented that the three young applicants disported themselves well and spoke well and confidently in the interview showing great depth of knowledge and understanding of their community and the world. All are fine examples of the youth of Mount Gambier.

Zone 10 Chair Wilf Nitschke and Youth of the Year Coordinator for the combined final also congratulated each participant on their performance and wished them well at the next level of the program.

He also praised the Mount Gambier Lions and Lioness Clubs for participating jointly giving opportunity to these three fine young students to proceed further in the program.

A Certificate of Participation was presented to Principal Chris Edmonds acknowledging the strong and continued support of the program by Mount Gambier High School and a special Certificate of Appreciation was presented to staff member Marianna Van der Berg for her continued efforts in raising and maintaining student interest, enthusiasm and participation.

The Lions Youth of the Year is open to students aged 15-19 years of age. Full details are found on the program website http://lionsclubs.org.au/activities/youth/yoty/. All schools with eligible students enrolled will be approached

Immediate Past President Brendon Hirth was presented with a Lions Clubs International Club Excellence Award for his Presidential year 2015 -16 by the Lions Zone Chairman Wilf Nitschke.

The criteria for the award application included a growth in membership of the club, participating in the Lions Centennial projects and involvement in the local community. The club well qualified for the latter with projects conducted such as Lions Mad Minute, Blue Lakes Brass Band Festival, Lions Christmas raffle, sale of Lions Christmas cakes and mints, conducting Bunnings BBQs, catering breakfast for the annual Toy Run and the Relay for Life. 2500 recycled spectacles were collected and forwarded to the Lions Recycle for Sight project and 3.3 kilograms of used stamps were collected for The Australian Lions Mobility Foundation. Members built a 70 metre long post and rail fence at Rook Walk and cut and delivered 95 cubic metres of firewood. Youth development projects included the Graduate of the Year Dux Awards, Grant High School Dux of the Middle School Awards and Lions Youth of the Year competition. Members were involved with Generations in Jazz and assisted the Historical Society with a clean-up at the Mount Gambier East Cemetery.

The club celebrated its 53rd year of humanitarian service to our community with great pride.

Some Centennial Reminders

District Centennial Lions Awareness Week

Our District’s Centennial Lions Awareness Week will be held in the first week of April. What plans does your club have to recognise the centennial and promote your club as well as national and international foundations & projects?

It would be great to hear what clubs have planned, so please drop me an email with some information so I can share your ideas with other clubs in our District.

Volunteers Week

It has been confirmed that the Volunteers Week parade will be held in the city on Monday 8th May 2017. It would be great to see as many of our Lions in the parade as possible to celebrate our centennial and raise awareness of our organisation.

Lions Clubs Centennial Commemorative Coin

Order your limited edition Lions Clubs Centennial Commemorative Coin now! This exquisitely crafted, limited edition, silver dollar coin is produced by the United States Mint and features our founder, Melvin Jones.

Celebrate the Centenary at your Club’s Handover

I am sure that club Presidents are beginning to think about their handover/changeover in a few months. The Centennial year is the perfect time to take your club's celebration to the next level, making 2017 a special, bigger and better event to celebrate the centennial.

Consider inviting past members, representatives from organisations that the club may have supported in the past and other community members to celebrate the Centennial. It’s not only a fun way to bring your club members and your community together, it's also a great opportunity to highlight your club's contributions and show your friends and family what being a Lion is all about.

This keepsake coin is the perfect way to honour our rich history and support the life-changing work of Lions around the world as US$10 of each coin sold will be donated to LCIF. If all 400,000 of the planned mintage are sold, that means LCIF will receive US$4m!

Proof Finish coin: US$52.95 & Uncirculated Finish: US$51.95 (plus US$2.95 handling fee per coin and freight). The Centennial coins will only be minted during 2017 and supplies are limited so don’t miss your chance to own a piece of Lions history.

“Lions Clubs and LCIF Making a Difference to People’s Lives”

March 2015, 2 years ago, Cyclone Pam the largest storm in a generation flattened a wide path of devastation across the Vanuatu Islands. Then on ANZAC Day 25th April 2015 Nepal experienced the first of two massive earthquakes that caused so much destruction and tens of thousands of people in need of help.

Local Lions immediately provided help distributing food and drinking water to their communities and villages on neighbouring islands and high in the mountains.

Australian, Indonesian and New Zealander Lions Clubs gave generously to LCIF to help these Lions and Leos distribute food, drinking water and essential goods.

News cameras and broadcasters have moved on, but Lions are continuing to rebuild communities. New schools in Vanuatu are underway, construction made possible with LCIF Grants. In Nepal, the reconstruction of 9 schools has started. Bids for the construction contracts have been published. Successful tenders will be chosen and begin work. The work will take a couple of years, but Lions remain, part of their community’s fabric, supported by your Lions Club and the Lions Family around the world via LCIF Grants.

This year, our 100th Birthday, celebrate by making a donation to “LCIF Area of Greatest Need” to help provide future Grants to your neighbouring Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs across Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and around the world take on large humanitarian projects in their communities.

100% of every dollar donated goes back to Lions Clubs in way of LCIF Grants.

Send your donation to your District Cabinet Treasurer, or individually donate via www.lcif.org

Thank you for your support. Yours In Lionism

Working With Children Checks - Comparison Table

Volunteering Strategy for South Australia project team three has compiled an essential table giving a national snapshot of the level of checking used by all states and territories to process Working with Children Checks (WWCCs).

http://www.ofv.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/50589/Summary-and-Table_State-and-territory-comparison-to-obtaining-Working-with-Children-Checks.pdf

The comparison table is the result of the increased national focus towards a consistent approach to WWCCs and shows the different, as well as the common sources of information each state and territory draws upon in determining whether to approve a WWCC. The Volunteering Strategy for South Australia is a cross-sector strategy developed by to improve the experience of volunteers, enhance the outcomes for volunteer involving organisations, and help maintain a volunteer participation rate of 70% or better

To help publicise Lions I have made the following suggestions and feedback is welcomed:

Each Club awards a Lion of the Year badge and the DG picks the District Lion of the Year.

Criticism is basically that we are n lions not for awards – nevertheless I can visualise great PR opportunities

A C2 Computer Linked Lions Club similar to Lionsonoz be formed aimed at younger people (It is often claimed that we do not attract younger members – partly because they are tied to their computers and phones).

The Skin Cancer Detection Vehicle has arrived I’m sure details will have appeared elsewhere concerning its operation and venues.

Zone 5 - that is Strathalbyn, Hahndorf, Nairne, Battunga, Mt Barker have contributed to the local radio station 88.9FM outside broadcast bus which has already been used to great effect publicising Lions.

Lionsonoz in Action While on a short stay at pretty Lake Cathie in February, Lionsonoz member PDG Warren White contacted the local Lions club to ascertain if they needed any assistance in projects they were involved in. President John Hayes was grateful for assistance in conducting a BBQ outside the local Supermarket, so Lion Warren was put to work in the final shift for the day cooking sausages, onions, eggs and bacon while Lion John and his wife Lion Sandy served the many customers. The Lake Cathie Bonny Hills Lions Club is few in numbers but big in ideas. Their latest project is to construct and provide a skateboard rink for the youngsters of the village and the many young people who visit this lovely seaside resort each school holidays. The fund raising project was kicked off in October when the Club earned over $2,000 as marshals for a vintage Motor bike rally at Port Macquarie. From then on it involves applying for grants and money raising projects, such as the various BBQs the Club conducts to attempt to achieve the $200,000 needed complete the project. Lionsonoz members do not conduct their own money raising projects due to the fact that members are situated all over Australia but they do enjoy meeting the local Lions in towns they visit to help them in their projects and make new friends while doing this.
