Samuel Goldvasser lay dy-ing in his bed, his young son Moishe, standing

by his side. As Samuel began speaking his nostrils began to flare sensing a beautiful aroma.

He looked at Moishe and said: “My son, my dearest son, I can smell that mommy’s baking rugelach. Please, I don’t want to die without tasting her rugelach for the last time, run down and bring me a couple.”

Moishe ran down the stairs and was back in a flash.

“Nu Moishe,” Samuel queried, “where’s the rugelach?”

Moishe looked at him with sad eyes and said: “Mommy says they’re for shiva!”

Sitting shiva involves specific practices, but in today’s world most liberal Jews don’t follow them.

Shiva, just as the name implies, lasts seven days. The mourners sit on low chairs, do not rise to greet visitors, don’t wear leather shoes, don’t bathe, don’t look in a mirror (mirrors are covered so that we don’t worry about how we look; vanity shouldn’t exist during shiva) and don’t practice any physical intimacy.

We, the left wing liberal Conservative, the Reform and the Reconstructionist Jews live in a very different world, and although we bend those rules, we don’t break them.

“May this synagogue be a place of happiness and health, of generosity and hope, of creativity, and kindness. May all who visit, pray, and study here know only blessing and peace.”

– paraphrased from the familiar house blessing

While searching for my theme for this month, the house blessing

magnet on my refrigerator “jumped” out at me. For these words describe how I feel about Congregation B’nai Israel. These past few months have not been easy ones. But when I’m at CBI, I definitely feel happiness and hope and kindness and peace. It is indeed a blessing to be here.

This month we’ll have lots of opportunities to enjoy our children. We start off with a Shabbat for Every Age and Stage. You get to choose the age level you want to spend time with – Dalet and Hey class will be in the main sanctuary helping with the Learning Service; eight to eleven year olds will be at the 8-11 Service in the Hebrew School wing; and the Young Family Service, for children seven and younger, will be in the library. There are two Bat Mitzvah celebrations this month – Sabrina Hirsch on Saturday, May 13, and Ella Glastein on Saturday, May 20. And then on

Sunday, May 21, we celebrate all of the Hebrew School students at their Moving Up ceremony/end of year celebration. We will also celebrate moms this month – Sunday, May 14, is Mother’s Day.

The month ends as we finish counting the Omer and celebrate Shavuot (49 days starting from the second day of Pesach to the day before Shavuot). There are two reasons to celebrate Shavuot. The first is that it commemorates the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. The second is that it also commemorates the harvesting of the first fruits, which were brought to the Temple. The best part, of course, is that we get to eat cheese cake. The morning of the second day of Shavuot (which is June 1) we will hold a Yizkor service at 7:30AM.

May tends to also be a busy time in our personal lives – college graduations, lots of outdoor sports events, school programs, dance programs, and more. The weather is nice and we’ll be spending a lot more time outdoors (don’t forget to order your plants from Men’s Club!!) Remember to make some time for CBI too. It’s always a good place to find some peace and quiet and a chance to catch your breath. And don’t forget one of the other key words in the blessing up top – generosity. Your CBI community needs your support and generosity so that we can burn our mortgage and help ensure a strong and blessed future for CBI.

Shalom from the Education Committee! The Passover break afforded our

children the opportunity to celebrate with their families, show off their learning by chanting the Ma Nishtanah, Dayenu, and other Passover standards, and also sleep in a bit on Sunday morning (for two weeks in a row!). It is hard to believe that Passover, Yom HaShoah, and all of April, are behind us. We hope that you and your families had great April and enjoyed celebrating together.

Along with the end of April comes May. May is bittersweet for us here at the Hebrew School, but there is much to look

forward to this month. All students who fulfilled their Shabbat service requirements will be rewarded with an ice cream party on May 7. The morning of May 21, the last day of Hebrew School, we will have our moving up ceremony. As usual, the Hey class, directed by Cantor

Lenny Mandel, will give a performance that is a moving expression of their journey here at CBI as students of the Hebrew language, Jewish identity, and Israeli culture. At the moving-up ceremony, all students will receive a certificate of completion for meeting the standards for their grade. We will finish with celebratory cake and juice, so please come join us for this special day in our children’s lives.

June, July, and August are quiet(er) months at CBI, but there are still Shabbat services and Sunday morning minyans. We encourage you to bring your children over the summer so that they stay connected with the CBI community, and so that they don’t experience the “summer slide” when they return to CBI in the fall. We hope to see you over the summer and of course, in September.

Should you have any questions over the summer, please contact us at [email protected].

As they say in Israel, L’hitraot, meaning, “Goodbye for now, see you again soon!”

SISTERS IN THE HOOD

by Beth Leipmann & Joan Zelman, Sisterhood Co-Chairs

We hope everyone had a good Passover. We want to thank

all the helping hands that joined Sisterhood and Men’s Club at the Homeless Shelter in Hackensack on Sunday, April 30. Feeding so many disadvantaged souls so soon after recounting the suffering we encountered in Egypt as Jews made this event that much more meaningful. Once again, we have to thank Renee and Warren Kuperinsky for always stepping up to the plate (no pun intended!).

In the works are a restorative Sunday afternoon at Salt of the Earth, Center for Healing, which is Sheryl Silver’s new adventure. In addition, we will be sponsoring a cooking class with Warren, so keep an eye out for details on both of these upcoming events.

Spring is here, enjoy all Mother Nature has to offer, and we wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day!

GREETINGS FROM THE CBI MEN’S CLUB

by Dave Bloom & David Gordon, Men’s Club Co-Chairs

If you joined us for our pilgrimage to Famous Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse, you saw a great show, en-joyed wonderful food, and have since doubled the dos-age of your statin to compensate. Thanks for coming!

Once more, a reminder to SEND IN YOUR ORDER for this year’s plant sale! We offer flats of your favorite flowers, vegetables and herbs for garden planting, as well as hanging baskets, window boxes, patio pots, etc. All will be delivered fresh from Vecchio’s Nursery of Closter two days before, so you can be confident your plants haven't been sitting around for weeks at some big box store.

Simply order your plants and pick them up on Mother’s Day (May 14). After you drop your kids off for Hebrew School, swing the car around to the far side of the parking lot and we’ll load your car with your order as we say a brocha ensuring your plants will have suffi-cient moisture and sunshine.

[Reply to the congregant with the personal inquiry: No, we can’t sell you those plants… we suggest you call a congregation in Colorado.]

RITUALWe are starting this message on a chilly,

very rainy evening at the end of April. By the time you read this we envision there will be a warm May sun with buds and blossoms brightening up our surroundings. Yom Ha Atzma’ut gets us off to a happy start on May 2. We will celebrate Israel’s Birthday on Saturday, May 6, during our “Every Stage and Age” Shabbat Morning Services. Cantor Mandel will lead Services in our Sanctuary from 10:00 – 11:30 am for the congregation, and our Dalet and Hey families (who are required to attend). We invite families with children 8-11 years old to a Service held in the Hebrew School wing from 10:30 – 11:30

am which will be led by a Hebrew School family. Our Young Family Service for families with children 7 years old and under will be led by Judy Schoenfeld and Audrey Bida in the Library from 10:30-11:30 am. Age appropriate songs, prayers, stories, and crafts, will fill the hour. At 11:30 am, we will all gather in the Social Hall for an extended Kiddush of pizza, salad, and ice cream!

On Sunday, May 7, Sabrina Hirsch will lead Sunday Minyan in preparation for her forthcoming Bat Mitzvah. The following

Erev Shabbat, May 12, she will again lead us in evening prayer, and on Shabbat morning, May 13, Sabrina will lead services as she becomes a Bat Mitzvah. Mazel Tov to Sabrina and her whole family.

We are proud to have Ella Glastein on the Bima leading our Sunday Minyan on Lag B’Omer, May 14. She will lead us in prayer on Erev Shabbat, May 19, and again, as a Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat Morning, May 20. We wish Mazel Tov to Ella and her entire family!

Sunday morning May 21 will be a very special day as our Hebrew School will celebrate their Moving Up Ceremony from 10:30 – 11:30 am. They are to be applauded for all their hard work and growth throughout the year.

The following week is Memorial Day Week-end and we will celebrate Shabbat Morning at our homes on May 27.

Erev Shavuot is May 30, with the first day of Shavuot following on May 31. Our Yizkor Service will be held on the second day of Shavuot, Thursday, June 1, at 7:30 a.m. This will be followed on Friday, June 2 by a Casual Shabbat at 7:30 pm.

Check the Shmooz for updates on all our activities. We look forward to seeing you in Shul!

Ask the Clergy[aka Dear (R)Abbi]

Several questions about Shiva: Why is 7 days the traditional time frame for sitting Shiva? Why are we supposed to walk around the block when it’s over? Why are mirrors covered in a Shiva home?

“Shiva,” referring to the seven-day mourning period which begins immediately after the funeral, is based on the Hebrew word for seven — shiv’a. Seven is a mystical number in most religious traditions. The world being created in seven days, etc. The Jewish custom of mourning for seven days is based on the verse in Genesis, Chapter 50 Verse 10,

when Joseph mourned his father Jacob: ” …and there they conducted a very great and impressive eulogy, and he made for his father a mourning of seven days.”

The practice of covering the mirrors began centuries ago and was based on a belief that spirits were attracted to mirrors. The Rabbis of the time declared that mirrors should be covered to discourage vanity and encourage inner reflection.

During Shiva one doesn’t leave the house (except on Shabbat when mourning is forbidden, and the family goes to shul), so walking around the block symbolizes the family’s return to society following this mourning period.

A Note from Your Rabbi

Interfaith Update

Thanks to everyone who participated in the March showing of the film ‘BESA – The

Promise’, and the discussion that followed. This story was simultaneously broad and

narrow, as the film brought us along to see, and hear, the personal accounts of several Albanian Muslim families, and the Jews they protected during our darkest days. It was particularly poignant to follow the film maker as he assisted one of these Muslim families keep their Besa – their Promise - to the Jews they housed, and then helped escape beyond Albania. This family had to leave a set of prayer books behind, but were assured they would be returned after the war. Despite 40 years of isolation under communism, the Albanian father passed this obligation along to his son, who went above and beyond to eventually track down the son of the Jewish family they had housed. The raw emotion of their reunion, and the pure meaning of the act of one son passing these precious prayer books to the other son, was unforgettable.

Hanna Wechsler was able to join us that afternoon, and she brought her own experience as commentary to the discussion. No one who participated that day went away untouched by these stories.

Hanna was invited to address Peace Island’s Youth Group of 9 -12th graders on Sunday, April 16. The timing was fortuitous, as it was only a week after our Seders, as well as the week before Yom HaShoah. We brought Passover treats to share with our hosts as Hanna conveyed her story (as only Hanna can!) and answered their questions. This was a unique opportunity for our young Muslim friends to interact directly with a survivor, and it was an afternoon that they will not forget.

On a separate note, I was invited recently to meet with Lori Fein of the Jewish Federation. The Federation is exploring ways to engage other faith groups in standing together with the Jewish community in more politically active ways (ie attending Town Halls and meeting with local governmental representatives). We will see what role CBI might be able to play as this effort unfolds and becomes more focused.

DOES THE US GOVERNMENT SUPPORT ISRAEL?A Story of AIPAC

The American Israel Public

Affairs Committee is a group

founded in 1963, which states

that its “mission is to strengthen,

protect, and promote the US-Israel

relationship in ways that enhance

the security of the US and Israel”.

Each March, this group holds

a two and a half day conference.

They present speakers from

Israel, US political players from

Republican and Democratic aisles,

new environmental, scientific,

medical, artistic, research from

Israel, discussion of Iran’s influence

in the Middle East, concern about

instability of many nations in the

Middle East, and how all of these

people and issues play into our

support of Israel as a democratic,

independent, Jewish State, and

ways in which they affect the US.

At the end of March 2017,

I attended my first AIPAC

Conference in Washington, DC.

More than 18,000 people were

present. At the Washington Convention

Center, we arrived, one by one, group by

group, with our bar coded ID tags hung

about our necks. Senator Mitch McConnell,

Representative Nancy Pelosi, Senator Chuck

Schumer, UN Rep Nikki Haley, Former United

Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair, former

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper,

Senator Tim Kaine, Senator Bob Menendez,

Vice President Mike Pence, and Speaker of the

House Paul Ryan, are just some of the folks

who came to speak, all in support of ongoing

financial, military, scientific exchanges with

Israel. Many noted their Jewish connections,

(Nancy Pelosi has Jewish grandchildren...),

and well, who doesn’t? Of course, politicians

cannot help but send some digs to the

opposition party, but not when it comes to

the State of Israel. Common Ground was

the theme, and it was clear that Washington

is listening to our voices. And they stood

up together and took note of how much

Israel has shared with others, including a

new device, with an internal battery, which

can synthesize water from the air around

us! Imagine, whether in a desert, a refugee

camp, or communities damaged by storms,

free, clean, drinkable water can now be

immediately produced!

Nikki Haley said, “Friends have each other’s

backs...we will not have another negative UN

vote on Israel while I am there”. More than

4,000 students activists were in attendance,

many people under 50 years of age, many over

70 years of age, Latino organizations, people

of color, Jewish and not Jewish, non-Jewish

student campus leaders of AIPAC....Everyone

was there, but you.

If I, or you, already support Israel, isn’t this

conference and organization “preaching to

the choir”? I felt supported by speakers, those

around me, and was impressed by how many

types of politicians want Israel to succeed.

The break-out group on Iran and her dirty

deeds in the Middle East that I attended was

chaired by an educated panel. They spoke of

Iran’s intentions to take the lead on the Middle

East stage, doing anything and everything to

undermine other nations and people.

Josh Gottheimer is a new Congressman

from our area, who happily met with his large

constituency from NJ in a special meeting

room at 1:40PM sharp on March 28th. I went to

demonstrate that we New Jerseyans care how

he represents us.

Israel is part of our Jewish DNA. Learn how it

makes each of us who we are, where we come

from, and who we may become. Join me March

4, 2018 in Washington.

TEHINA SHORTBREAD COOKIES

1¾ sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature1 cup sugar1 cup tehina

2 cups all-purpose flour1 tsp baking powderPinch kosher salt

1. Combine the butter and sugar in a stand mixer on medium speed or in a large bowl with a hand mixer and mix until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the tehina, and continue to mix until well incorporated.

2. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl and whisk together. Transfer to the tehina mixture and beat until just incorporated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight. (The dough keeps well in the freezer for a few months.)

3. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Drop the batter by heaping tablespoons on the prepared baking sheets. Bake until the cookies are light brown around the edges and set, about 15 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for 1 week.

Dear Congregation B’nai Israel,

This letter is to thank you for hosting the annual CBI

One Book One Community event that took place on

Sunday, March 26. It was great, with many more in

attendance than we expected, including quite a few

from Jewish organizations and synagogues in the area.

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, and to

meet the new people who dropped in to increase their

knowledge and experience the fun.

Mike Passow enlightened us with his very interesting

and fact-filled talk about this year’s Jewish Federation of

Northern NJ’s pick, Let There Be Water, by Seth Siegel.

We all learned so much about Israel’s water technology

and how it relates to us here in New Jersey and other

places in the US and abroad. He also told us about the

water system in our area and its history. There were

many questions throughout the presentation, and then a

lively discussion. And, the schmoozing afterward went

on and on! Of course, we couldn’t have done it without

our president, Nancy Passow. Thank you Mike and

Nancy!

As a special added attraction, there were delicious

Israel-inspired treats,….some store-bought, and others

home-made in our CBI kitchen. Thanks Marie for

your help with kitchen access and incidental supplies.

Thanks Warren and Renee Kuperinsky (Warren made

his spectacular chocolate babka!), Neila Cohen (my

partner on the Jewish Federation One Book reading

committee and helper to set up the event) and her

husband Peter, Lori Yoselow, Robyn Abrams, Marilyn

Weinstein, and my husband George – all of whom

helped with the shopping, cooking, baking, kitchen

clean-up, and event set up. (My apologies to anyone I

may have left out.)

I am looking forward to the Federation’s author

event featuring Seth Siegel. It will be Wednesday, May

10 at 7:00 at the Frisch School, 120 Century Road in

Paramus. Tickets are $18 and registration is required.

Check it out at www.jfnnj.org/onebook. Even if you

don’t get a chance to read the book, I encourage you to

attend. It will be an exciting event.

And finally, thanks to all the attendees. You made it

a success!

Wishing you all good things,

Hurry... there isn’t much thyme left! This year, the Men’s Club is teaming up with the Ways & Means Committee to bring you a Mother’s Day sale like no other! Buy gift certificates for local services and everything you need for your spring planting from us and CBI benefits!

Annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale! Why buy from us, you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

• Our plants do not come to you via Home Depot, Lowes, or other big-box store where they’ve been sitting for days or weeks. Ours are delivered directly from the nursery just two days before!

• Got children in Hebrew School? On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, drop your kids off (we recommend slow-ing down to a complete stop first), then swing your car around to the other side of the building and pop the trunk. We’ll load your plants for you while singing your favorite aria from Verdi’s “La Traviata”!

• All proceeds go toward funding CBI, so you do a triple mitzvah by honoring that special mom, beautifying your world, and supporting your shul with a single check.

Be sure to get your order in on or before Sunday May 7, either by dropping off your completed form at the office, faxing it, scanning/emailing it, or sending it via postal mail as directed in the instructions on the accompanying form.

We will also have a small selection of plants available for purchase on Mother’s Day, great for last minute gifts from your kids or something nice to bring to Aunt Essie’s.

Don’t wait... order now!

Mother’s Day and Graduation Gift Certificates! With Spring Break, Mother’s Day and Graduations right around the corner, purchase that special gift for the special someone in your life. Best of all, CBI gets a percentage of the purchase price!

This year, you have a selection of three offers:

• Swedish massage from Back at Ease in Montvale ($65 and $100 options)

• Mani-pedis, tanning, facials, massages and more from Nail Spa Plus in Montvale ($50 and $100 options)

• Dining at Mezza Mediterranean in Westwood ($50 and $100 options)

Order your gift certificates by April 30th and make checks payable to “Congregation B’nai Israel” or pay by cash.

BAT/BAR MITZVAH MESSAGEELLA GLASTEINMy name is Ella Glastein. For my mitzvah project, I chose to help people who suffer from Alzheimer’s. I am volunteering my time every Thursday at the Jewish Home for Assisted Living. Each week, I play cards with a woman named Sandy. She suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. It feels great to see her smile every time she sees me. By volunteering my time, I know that I am making a difference in her life. I wanted to help people

with Alzheimer’s disease because relatives on both sides of my family have suffered from this disease. To contribute to the study for a cure, my family and I participated in a walk-a-thon to raise money. The funds that we raised will help doctors conduct research with the goal of learning how to find a treatment and a cure for Alzheimer’s. I truly hope that no one else in my family or anybody’s family will have to go through this. My goal is to continue raising money for Alzheimer’s research in order to help people all over the world.
