The Decatur Community High Red Devils spent about three hours on a bus Thursday to get to Mon- tezuma and face the South Gray High School team, which came into the game with a 7-1 record. The Running Rebels downed the Red Devils 50-0 after scoring 22 in the first quarter and 28 in the second to end the game under the “mercy rule.” That ended the Red Devils’ season in the first round of the Eight-Man Division 1 Tourna- ment of the Kansas High School Football Playoffs. “It was a tough game last night,” Coach Trevor Williams said. “We knew South Gray was a really good team and we would have to play a really good game if we were going give ourselves a chance to come up with a win. “Unfortunately, we made too many costly errors and the game just got out of hand quickly. The guys played hard, but we had way too many mistakes Thursday night. “I felt like this group of young men accomplished some really good things this season. With everything that every team is deal- ing with this fall, I felt these guys came out everyday and gave their best effort.” Oberlin entered the game with a 3-3 record after beating Wallace County, WaKeeney and Hill City and losing to St. Francis, Hoxie and Atwood. The Rebels had previous wins over Ingalls, Santana, Minneola, Ness City, Meade, Spearville and Jetmore-Hodgeman County and lost to undefeated Leoti-Wichita County. 6 THE OBERLIN HERALD Wednesday, November 4, 2020 Sports Schedule Providing our region with Community Hospital believes you and your family deserve excellence in accessible care.
