Kathy MarschmanInterim Secretary of the

Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs’ commitment to our military veterans doesn’t waver. This is especially true as we transition leadership within the WDVA.

I am honored to have been appointed as Interim Secretary by Governor Scott Walker and look forward to doing my best to continue to faithfully serve those who served our nation while ensuring the department operates at the highest standard.

King is an important part of what we at WDVA do, and it, too, is in the midst of many changes that we hope show our commitment to providing top-notch care in a beautiful, modern setting that meets the evolving needs of our state’s veterans.

Many of the changes have been happening at the Marden Center. The Veterans Café and Alley 5 Bar both underwent renovations and are reopened with a more modern look and more food and beverage selections. Both will continue to see upgrades in the coming months as new furniture and new flooring are installed in these areas. Plans are also in the works to add a four-season room on to the Café so that the views of Rainbow Lake can be enjoyed year round. We also moved the Home Exchange to the Marden Center, making shopping more accessible for all our members.

In addition to those improvements, bathrooms on campus have all been recently upgraded and new flooring was installed at Legends of the Lake II as well as in the Marden Multi-Purpose Room. A cemetery expansion project is beginning that will include new facilities and signage, and we continue to move forward with plans for a new state of the art skilled nursing facility that will be called Moses Hall.

While our King campus is already beautiful, it too will see some upgrades. We are currently working on plans to improve the park and other outdoor areas for members. Park improvements will include a new plaza, new walkways with various monuments, a new shelter area where campfires can be hosted for members, and new signage to help people navigate the campus. I hope all of you enjoy the improvements we are making at King and continue to enjoy calling the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King “home.”

THE WOODI have used wood for many a thing

To hear it crackle in the fireplace makes me sing. You have to get it first.

Not having enough is the worst.I use it to heat my home.

It removes the urge to roam,For it warms the heart.

You don’t want to be apart.Cutting it can warm you too,

As hauling it can do.Then you have to make sure it’s dry,So it will burn and light up the sky.

Of the warmth that it brings, To your home and it will make you sing.

On those cold chilly nights,That can be a fright.

But the most important thing,Is that it makes you think of spring.

Of growing saplings,And what it will bring.

Looking Forward to New Things

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column

11

continued on page 12

David GuerreroChaplain

“See, I am doing a new thing!” Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)As 2016 came to a close, we ended the year with new things—new toys for the kids, new clothes and for many a new perspective. We start the year off with new things, too—a new calendar on the wall, new bills to pay, and new resolutions for the days ahead.

Everybody likes new things, including God. He’s called the Ancient of Days, but He says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 40:18) God begins the Bible with the story of His creating a new world; He ends it with His plans to make a new heaven and new earth.

God is a God of new things and Our heavenly Father wants to do new things in the lives of His children. He desires to teach us new truths about Himself, provide new opportunities for ministering to others, take us to higher levels of worship and deeper levels of trust. But too often we’re like the Israelites when they were traveling in the wilderness.

God promised to provide for them by raining down bread from heaven six days a week. He instructed them to gather only enough manna for each day, except for the day before the Sabbath when they were allowed to store up two day’s worth. When some of the people disobeyed and tried to hoard extra manna, it became rotten and full of worms by the next morning.

God wants to do new, fresh things in our lives for His glory. But often time we try to hold on to yesterday’s stale manna. We don’t want to let go of what is comfortable and familiar—same old way of thinking, a certain way of doing things, our usual area of service to Him. As we do this we may miss new and exciting things God has planned for us if we don’t fully trust His guidance, even when He seems to be leading us down unfamiliar paths.

One of the best ways to keep our faith fresh and new is to develop a habit of daily Bible study. God’s Word is timeless—old and new at the same time. Just as God’s “compassions are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23), a daily dose of His Word can give us new understanding, fresh insights, and renewed strength.

We can drink in the Psalms to help us “sing to the Lord a new song.” (33:3 and others) We read in Ezekiel about God’s promise to give us “a new heart and a new spirit.” (chapters 11, 18, 36) We rejoice along with Paul as he declares, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Studying the letters of Colossians and Ephesians reminds us that we have taken off our “old self with its practices” (Colossians 3:9) and are to “put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24)

VITAL STATISTICS

If we need motivation to live like a new creation, God has provided two keys in His Word. It’s important to look backward to the New Covenant, the source of our salvation. We can meditate on Hebrews and thank God again that the sacrifice of Jesus made “a new and living way” for us to enter His presence. (Hebrews 10:19-22) And we also keep looking forward to our future by reading Revelation. We can find comfort in thinking about the time when God will right all wrongs, heal all hurts, and give us a new name and a new home.

A good way for us, as children of God to celebrate the New Year is to let go of anything that has gone stale or rotten. Then we’ll be free to live each day expecting new, fresh things from the One Who promises, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5)

The Library has added several books to its permanent collection.Following are some of those books.

Splash One – Air Victory Over Hanoi by Walt Kross This novel is based on the Vietnam War’s Operation Bolo, one of the most dramatic turnabout victories in American aviation history. It is 1966 and the U.S. Air Force 8th Tactical Fighter Wing is operating out of Ubon Air Force Base, Thailand. The 8th TFW, armed with F-4s, is charged with escorting F-105 Thunderchiefs on bombing runs over North Vietnam. The problem is – the White House has restricted U.S. forces from striking North Vietnamese aircraft on the ground. This results in a rising “kill” rate against the Americans. Things start turning around when Colonel Clint Adams arrives at Ubon. Clint is a former West Point football star, World War II double ace, and a maverick. He soon rallies the 8th TFW to gain ground – through the use of aggression and intelligence. This change is unwelcome news to “The Dragon” – Colonel Nguyen Tomb, head of the North Vietnamese Air Force. “The day must come when the two men will meet in the deadly skies over Hanoi.”

Love Finds You in Lancaster County Pennsylvania by Annalisa Daughety Both Amish-born Lydia Ann Raber and Southern belle Caroline DeMarco strike up an unlikely friendship when they discover their shared history of loss. The friendship blossoms and they decide to open a gift shop in beautiful Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lydia Ann discovers herself drawn to handsome woodworker Simon Zook. Whether or not this romance blossoms will depend on how Lydia handles the secret that Simon harbors… Caroline’s love interest lies with journalist Michael Lands. However, Caroline is a fugitive from an infamous past, and she wonders if Michael is to blame when reporters start pursuing her again.

The Sound of Sleigh Bells by Cindy Woodsmall Beth Hertzler is trying to recover from the loss of her fiancé. She tries to keep busy by working with her Aunt Lizzy in their dry goods store, and serving as a contact between Amish craftsmen and Englischer retailers. One day, in one of the Englischer stores, Beth comes across a large, intricately carved scene of Amish children playing in the snow. That carving inspires something deep within Beth, and she decides to help the unknown artist find homes for his work. When Aunt Lizzy notices the way Beth has “perked up” since meeting artist Jonah, she is determined to make sure romance blossoms!

Arctic Drift by Clive Cussler & Dirk Cussler Follow Dirk Pitt and his colleague Al Giordino as they search for a potential breakthrough discovery to reverse global warming. Their motivation is a mysterious silvery mineral that they traced to a long-ago expedition to find the Northwest Passage. At the same time, the world is becoming less and less stable. A rash of international incidents between the U.S. and one of its closest allies threatens to erupt into an all-out war!

Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Sanction by Eric Van Lustbader James Bourne (now living as David Webb) finds his quiet life as a linguistics professor at Georgetown University, well, a bit boring. He misses the years of espionage and being one step ahead of death. Professor Specter, his academic mentor, knows his friend is struggling at trying to live a “normal” life. Specter opens the door for Bourne to return to his previous life when he asks for help in solving the murder of a former student; the young man was murdered by a previously unknown Muslim extremist sect. The murdered student carried information about the group’s terrorist activities, including an immediate plan to attack the United States!

Diary of a Stage Mother’s Daughter by Melissa Francis This memoir was written by Melissa Francis, former child actress and current Fox Business News anchor. When Melissa was 8 years old, she was selected to play Cassandra Cooper Ingalls, the little girl who was adopted by the Ingalls family on “Little House on the Prairie.” It appeared as though Melissa was living a charmed life, but behind the scenes was a “tiger mother” who made life especially difficult for Melissa’s older sister. It was not until years later – after Melissa graduated from Harvard University, and had married – that she came to realize the damage caused to her sister’s emotional well-being. When she saw that her mother continued to play a role in Tiffany’s downward spiral, Melissa resolved to end the manic, abusive cycle once and for all. This is a fascinating read, and will beg the question “how hard should you push a child to succeed, and at what point does your help turn into harm?”
