MeSSAge FroM SidhArtA Auctioneer
Since last year, we have managed to once again hold two Fine Art auctions annually. This is our second Fine Art auction this year, and it will be held in two separate auctions, combined with a Collectibles auction.
Our first session (Fine Art), will be held on Sunday, 20 November 2016. In order to present our clients with auctions, we have to find interesting works or art that someone or another would like to sell. Auction houses usually get works from galleries or dealers, but the most exciting lots usually come from the collections of old connoisseurs who have become detached from the current network of art collectors due to a generational gap or other social matters.
Old collections that consist of a select number of authentic artworks are very hard to come by, and therefore when we do come across one or two it give us great pleasure and satisfaction. It makes us happy and at the same time proud because we envision that our discovery will bring pleasure to our valued clients who also would like to acquire the wonderful art pieces for their collection.
Once in awhile, through our networks of families, friends and acquaintances, we get introduced to families who consider it time to let go of their collections. Recently, a small yet wonderful collection of Indonesian fine art, property of a gentleman, has been entrusted to be auctioned through our auction house.
The collection consists of various Indonesian art works, some of which we highlight here. From the selection of paintings in the possession of the collector, it seems evident that he was fascinated with people a work, and in particular women at work. Various forms of Balinese dances performed by women are shown in different artistic styles by Bagong Kussudiardja, Lim Wasim and Nyoman Gunarsa. While Sudarso's painting is of a woman with a basket taking a rest, Tatang Ganar depicts a socially active yet culturally conscious Indonesian woman elegantly and smartly dressed in her kebaya.
In the collection there is one of JB Iwan Sulistyo's early works, which is a painting of two women carrying water vessels. This painting seems to show a different and in many ways more interesting phase of the artist's oeuvre, which shows traces of his artistic influences. Rustamadji's painting of women carrying baskets of fish, suggests not only the women's determination to work hard but also their communal spirit of progressing together, which should be the spirit and ethos of how people do business in the country today.
The second (Collectibles) session will be held on Sunday, 11 December 2016. Our collectibles auction feature ceramics, textiles, furniture and decorative items that have originated from various collections, primarily from collectors residing in Jakarta. Some of the most exceptional items can be found here.
The Third (Fine Art) session immediately follows the second session. In this session we feature some great works by noted Contemporary artists including Jumaldi Alfi, Saftari, Lucia Hartini, Ivan Sagito and Pintor Sirait. We also present a special section about Indonesian-Chinese (Tionghoa) artists, which include Lee Man Fong, Lim Wasim, Liem Tjoe Ing, Lim Kwie Bing and Huang Fong, among others. From the property of notable collectors, there are also a number of works by masters of abstraction from Jakarta, Bandung and Yogya schools of art, namely Zaini, Popo Iskandar, Ahmad Sadali, Mochtar Apin, A.D. Pirous, Handrio, and Rusli.
In total, we present you with 310 lots, in the three sessions. We hope that there will be some pieces in our auctions that will attract your interest. Happy viewing and bidding!

guide For bidderSBidding at the AuctionThe following pages are designed to give any prospective bidders useful information on how to bid and buy at Sidharta Auctioneer's Fine Art auction (the "Auction" or the "Sale").
1. BEFORE THE AUCTION
EstimatesThe estimated price range of each lot, printed below the description of each lot, is intended solely to be a guide for prospective buyers. Any bid between the high and the low estimated price range would, in our opinion, offer a fair chance of success in the purchase of the lot. However, all lots, depending on the degree of competition, can realise prices either above or below the estimates. Estimates do not include the Buyer's Premium.
ReservesThe reserve is a confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept in the sale of the lot. If the highest bid of the lot fails to reach the reserve, the lot will not be sold.
Pre-Auction Viewing/Condition of LotsPrior to the Auction, viewings will be open to public and free of charge. The condition of each lot is described in the condition report which Sidharta Auctioneer prepared with reasonable effort and good professional manner. We strongly encourage interested buyers to re-quest these condition reports and to examine the lots properly. The absence of reference to the condition of a lot in the catalog description does not imply that the lot is free from faults or imperfections.
2. THE AUCTION
Buyer’s TermsThe Auction is governed by the Terms for Buyers and Sales Terms printed in this catalog. These Terms apply to all aspects of the relation-ship between Sidharta Auctioneer and actual and prospective bidders and buyers. Anyone considering bidding in the Auction should read and understand them carefully. They may be amended by way of notices posted in the saleroom or by way of announcement made by the auctioneer.
Bidding at the AuctionRegistration is required for all bidders 30 minutes prior to the start of the Auction. The identity of bidders will be verified. Bids may be executed in person by the use of paddle or by telephone through Sidharta Auctioneer's staff during the Auction, or in writing prior to the Sale. The Auction speeds vary, but usually average between 50-60 lots per hour.
We reserve the right to refuse admission to the premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid.
Consecutive and Responsive BiddingThe auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may further bid on behalf of the seller, by placing consecutive or responsive bids for a lot, up to amount of the reserve. The lots are auctioned in consecutive numerical order with video image or any manner of display we consider appropriate. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah in incremental price increase. The auctioneer accepts bids from those present in the saleroom, from telephone bid-ders, or by absentee bids left with us in advance of the Auction.
9
Bidding IncrementsBidding generally opens below the low estimates and progresses in the following increments:
Rp. 1.000.000,- to Rp. 3.000.000,- by Rp. 200.000,- Rp. 3.000.000,- to Rp. 5.000.000,- by Rp. 300.000,- Rp. 5.000.000,- to Rp. 10.000.000,- by Rp. 500.000,- Rp. 10.000.000,- to Rp. 20.000.000,- by Rp. 1.000.000,- Rp. 20.000.000,- to Rp. 30.000.000,- by Rp. 2.000.000,- Rp. 30.000.000,- to Rp. 50.000.000,- by Rp. 3.000.000,- Rp. 50.000.000,- to Rp. 100.000.000,- by Rp. 5.000.000,- Rp. 100.000.000,- to Rp. 200.000.000,- by Rp. 10.000.000,- Rp. 200.000.000,- to Rp. 300.000.000,- by Rp. 20.000.000,- Rp. 300.000.000,- to Rp. 500.000.000,- by Rp. 30.000.000,- Rp. 500.000.000,- to Rp. 1.000.000.000,- by Rp. 50.000.000,- Rp. 1.000.000.000,- and above: according to auctioneer's direction
The auctioneer may change the increments during the course of the Auction at his or her discretion.
Bidding in personTo bid in person at the Auction, registered bidders should collect their numbered paddle before the Auction begins. Proof of identity references and registration will be required to collect paddles.
The paddle is used to indicate your bids to the auctioneer during the Sale. Successful buyers of any lot should ensure that their paddle is visible to the auctioneer and that it is their number that is called out as the successful bidder. Should there be any doubts as to price or buyer, the bidder should draw the auctioneer's attention to it immediately. All lots sold will be invoiced to the name and address in which the paddle has been registered and cannot be transferred to other names and addresses.
Please do not mislay your paddle; in the event of loss please inform the sales clerk immediately. At the end of the Sale, please return your paddle to the registration desk.
Absentee BidsProspective buyers who are unable to attend the Auction can submit absentee bids using Written Bid form that can be found on page 139of this catalog. This service is confidential. Absentee Bids can be in the form of a Written Bid or Telephone Bid. The Absentee Bid type should be indicated on the form.
Absentee bids must be confirmed before the Sale by letter or fax. To ensure satisfactory service to bidders, please ensure that we receive your bids at least 24 hours before the Sale.
E-mail for bids : [email protected] or [email protected]
Written BidsProspective buyers who would like to entrust Sidharta Auctioneer to execute bids on their behalf can place a written bid ("Written Bid"). In the Written Bid form you MUST specify the lot number, the description of the item and the top limit. Unlimited or unspecified bids such as instructions to (buy) will not be accepted. Although the Top Limit is denoted, lots will always be bought as cheaply as is consistent with other bids and the reserves. In the case of identical bid limits, the earliest bid received will take precedence.
Bidding by TelephoneFor prospective buyers who are unable to attend the Auction but would like to participate in the Auction remotely through the modera-tion of Sidharta Auctioneer's staff, it is possible to bid on the telephone on lots. An administrative surcharge of Rp. 300.000 will be ap-plied to successful phone bids. As the number of telephone lines is limited, it is necessary to make arrangements for this service 24 hours before the sale. We also suggest that you still indicate a Top Limit maximum bid which we can execute on your behalf in case we are unable to reach you by the telephone. Bilingual staff is available to execute bids for you.
Successful BidsThe fall of the auctioneer's hammer indicates the final bid (the "Hammer Price"). The auctioneer's will call out and record the paddle number of the buyer. If your written bid is successful, you will be notified immediately after the Sale by post. Bidding may be reopened at the auctioneer's discretion.
Currency ConversionSince bidding is carried out in Indonesian Rupiah, a currency converter may be operated, based on the most recently available rates of exchange quoted to us by Bank Indonesia applicable on the date of the Auction. However, please note that figures shown in foreign cur-rencies are only approximates and do not represent exact exchange rates.

The Art of Raden Otto Djaya(Lot #054 - 059 & #062)
Raden Otto Djaya (1916 - 2002) is one of the great masters of Indonesian fine art. He is a legend strongly grounded in the history of art in Indonesia. He would have become one hundred years on 6 October 2016. Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta, celebrated his life and art with a large solo exhibition 30 September to 9 October 2016.
Otto Djaya was a non-conformist. He painted with a distinct and recognizable style to explore and express both the mundane and spiritual lives of Indonesians, especially of the Javanese. He was deeply analytical of humanity, and was able to synthesize natural beauty, myths, folklore and satire. Otto Djaya caricatured, never ridiculed.
Otto Djaya painted through six decades of Indonesian history and politics, from colonial times through war, revolution, the Sukarno and Suharto regimes, to democracy. He served in the first revolutionary army as a Major and company commander and fought in the Sukabumi battle of Bojong Kokosan in 1945.
In 1947 Otto Djaya went to The Netherlands to obtain formal education as a painter. He enrolled in Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and in addition studied philosophy at Gemeentelijk Universiteit van Amsterdam.
During his three years in Europe he and his brother Agus had two successful exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and several other exhibitions around Europe receiving excellent critique. While painting in the Netherlands he stayed loyal to Indonesian motifs and the figurative painting style that survived in his paintings all his life.
Returning home in 1950, he first settled in Semarang, then moved to South Jakarta in 1966.
Otto Djaya painted throughout his life paintings of his military time and paintings showing Indonesian folklore, myths, traditions and social changes. In a majority of his paintings Otto Djaya incorporated the legendary Punakawan characters in order to help his message get through more easily to the general public.

The Body and The Nude in Art
In the English language, nudity, nakedness and stripped are three words that can be associated with the state of the unclothed human figure, each having distinct connotations. Yet nude or nudity are commonly used to refer to the representation of the unclothed figure in art, as can be seen in paintings, sculpture, Hindu - Javanese temple reliefs and carvings and so forth.
At least, we can accept that the state of being unclothed in such works are based on the assumption that the state of nakedness in the works are meant to achieve the symbolic significance of purity, naïveté, honesty and frankness; or nakedness that does not start from the state of being dressed which later has been either intentionally or obligatorily taken off or stripped. Imagine the state of Adam and Eve when they had not had any knowledge of sin and so their nudity of course did not have any association with sexual desire or even shame. It is the nudity that is in the same par as the nakedness of a baby that has just been released from his/ her mother's womb. This is the nudity that is related to the notions of purity, naïveté and honesty that has been previously mentioned.

Property of a Gentleman (lots #111 to # 132)
In order to present our clients with an auction, we have to find interesting works or art that someone or another would like to sell.
Various forms of Balinese dances performed by women are shown in different artistic styles by Bagong Kussudiardja, Lim Wa Sim and Nyoman Gunarsa.

Soeparto’s Opulent Decorativism(lots #326-329)
Along with Mulyadi W., Arief Soedarsono, Irsam, Hatta Hambali and a number of other artists, Soeparto developed Soedibio and Widayat's "School of Decorativism" in their own ways in Jakarta starting around the late 1960s and early 1970s. Decorativism developed organically and never developed a discourse and therefore each proponent was free to interpret their Decorativism accoring to their own paradigms.
Soeparto's Decorativism was quite particular and distinct from the others. He often used horizontal bands of contrasting pastel colors, usually light pastels for figures and darker pastels for sky or grounds to subtly define foreground from background. The application of paints of colors do not follow the form, but rather become elements of embellishment. Yet, the figures and forms are perceived as objects with clear dimensionalities. Soeparto's Decorativism is not only particular. The artist seems to be gifted with a unique talent that allows him to create such wonderful art pieces with distinguished opulence.
We are proud to feature four among the best of Soeparto's works in this auction.

Abas Alibasyah(Purwakarta, W. Java, 1928 - Jakarta, 2016)
In the 1990s, Abas Alibasyah was most famous for his paintings of rather surrealistic masks and landscapes, but his works could not be easily categorized as coming from the Yogya school of Surrealism nor Decorativism. Devoid of human figure, his landscapes seemed to reveal the artist's melancholy. Although his masks seem to suggest human presence, they also enhance the melancholic spirit of his paintings.
While in Session I, there is a painting entitled Flowers and Mask dating from 1989 (lot #112), in this section there are four other relatively earlyAbasAlibasjah paintings from two collections. Mascot, 1969 (lot #331) Abstraksi Warna, 1967 (lot # 332) are typical of his paintings from the 1960s, in which the artist seemed to explore colorist abstraction.
Scenery, 1971 (lot #333) is a predecessor of his later melancholicand rather surrealistic landscapes that are devoid of human figures. In this painting, the landscape appears more realistic, but no less haunting. Somehow it seems to remind us not to neglect our environment.
Last but not least, Cili, 1991 (lot #334) also seems to be a predecessor of his later paintings of masks. The painting extends the artist's exploration of abstraction while including the mask as anicon. Hence, the painting appears more of an artistic expression rather than a realistic description of the subject matter.

Artwork by Tionghoa (Indonesianof Chinese Descent) Painters(lots #355-371)
The Tionghoa (Indonesians of Chinese descent) played an important role in shaping the history of Indonesian art. As early as 1955, Lee Man Fong already held an exhibition at the Kolff Bookstore in Batavia and participated in an exhibition that was held by the Dutch Indies Art Association at Hotel DesIndes the following year.
The Indonesian Proclamation of Independence in 1945, was followed the Indonesian Revolutionary War in 1945 - 1949 and eventually the Dutch recognition of Indonesian sovereignity at the end of 1949. In 1955, along with other Tionghoa figures and artists, Lee Man Fong established an organization called Yin Hua Meishu Xiehui (The Organization of Indonesian Chinese Artists) in Jakarta. They held their first exhibition in January 1956. Among the names listed as members (other than Lee Man Fong), are TjioTek-Djin (whose portrait by Trubus Soedarsono appears in lot #073 of this auction), and Lim Kwie Bing who was known to have also chaired the Tsing Feng She and M.M Art Club in Malang. Later on, Lim Wasim also joined Yin Hua.
"As the definition of national art was never conclusively formulated, the complexity of the Tionghoa identity (being a mixture or cross section of Indonesian and Chinese), actually contributed to the diversity of national aesthetics" stated Brigitta Isabella, a researcher who has done research on Yin Hua. Lee Man Fong, for example, often painted Indonesian subject matter using the hanging scroll format of Chinese landscape painting. Yet, his European training and aesthetics further complicated and at the same time enrich the enculturation.
In this auction section we feature the works by several Tionghoa artists, including some historic works. Liem Kwie Bing's Boy with Kite (lot #369) dates from 1947, while Lee Man Fong's drawing of a Buddha Figure (lot #357) dates from 1958. Lim Wasim's Mencari Kutu (lot #355), Anton Huang's sketch of a Balinese marketscene (lot #364), and Lim Kwie Bing's intricate renditions of Balinese rituals (lots #370 & 371) all date from the 1960s and '70s. Lee Man Fong's impressionistic Bunga Kembang Sepatu (lot #358), Liem Tjoe Ing's and from the 1980s are among others Huang Fong's expressive renditions of horses (lot #359, 360 & 362), Adam Lay's serene painting of gold fish (lot #361), Huang Fong's elegant painting of a Balinese dancer (lot #365), Liem Tjoe Ing's painting of fishermen by the beach (lot #366) and his watercolor of reliefs of a Javanese temple (lot #367).
Although not grouped in this section, there are a number of other Tionghoa artists whose works appear here. Among the woman artists, Maria Tjui (whose painting appears in lot #115), is a Tionghoa artist famous for her expressiveness in her art, and also. Ivan Sagito (whose painting appears in lot #343), was very influential in the development of Contemporary Indonesian art in the 1980s and 1990s.
Each Indonesian Chinese artist, with their unique cultural paradigms, contributes to the diversity of Indonesian art.
