Gladys: Use both vertical and horizontal number lines frequently to illustrate addition of integers, attending to both distance and direction. Use them even for problems with context.

Kevin: Help students realize that just a sketch of a number line may be useful, and that zero does not always have to be in the middle or even visible.

Megan: Watch for common errors when students use number lines for addition of rational numbers: miscounting units, misaligning arrows, and starting subsequent arrows at zero.

SPACE SELFIEHow far away are they from home base?

Commander K-8 and Lucy are once again on the ARCCOS ship traveling through space to pick up supplies. Lucy has the urge to take a selfi e, even though the fl ash has previously resulted in shutdown of the ship. Apparently, Lucy has not learned her lesson and decides to take another selfi e while the Commander isn’t looking. This stops the ship and they must determine their distance from home base before rebooting the ship. Luckily, Lucy got the Trackometer in her selfi e shot.

Use Lucy’s selfi e to determine their distance from home base.
