Beef ShowS in full Swing at liveStoCk expoSition Broadbent Arena and Freedom Hall are in full swing with beef cattle shows at the 42nd Annual North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). With 20 different beef cattle breeds on the grounds, we can almost guarantee that we have your favorite color somewhere in the barns. With 1700 junior entries and just under 4000 open entries registered to show, it makes for a packed house.

Showing beef cattle successfully is not a just one person job. A successful project takes a family, a team and multiple experts to use knowledge and skill to put the animal together properly.

A fitter is someone who specializes in grooming and feeding an animal to accentuate its best qualities and reach its maximum potential. From shampoo to adhesive, and scotch combs to roto-brushes, the industry is booming with ways to show the animals to their full potential.

The exhibitor takes the animal into the show ring. More than positioning the calf with the show stick and walking an animal in circles around the ring, the exhibitor makes the animal stand with elegance, power and balance, and ensures that the animal travels smoothly around the ring.

Often the future teller/selector of the animal starts shopping for the “winner” months in advance. In order to be successful, this person has to have the ability to see the potential of a future show animal at an early age.

The nutritionist, who can sometimes be the exhibitor or fitter, controls what the animal is eating and manages the animal along its growth curve. From day to day, while keeping the end goal in mind, the nutritionist strategically keeps the animal on track for the end goal weight and finish.

There are often other jobs on various livestock teams, and rarely does just one person produce a successful show exhibit. Each person’s expertise and knowledge is important in showing and winning.

As you finish up your week at the North American International Livestock Exposition, take the time to thank your team, or family, your fitters, the feed specialist or nutritionist, the people behind the genetics, and all the folks who have provided support and encouragement. It takes more than one person. It takes the entire team.
