A satellite is moving through space
around the Earth. Scientists are taking
photos of the Sun. The Sun has been
having a solar storm for the last few
days. Solar winds leave the Sun and
move to the Earth!
1
Solar winds are a form of energy. They
are made up of charged particles. Solar
winds have electrons and protons. Solar
winds move in a stream, much as how
water fl ows through a river!
2
The solar winds move to the Earth.
The Earth’s magnetic fi eld protects us
from solar winds. Most of the charged
particles from the solar winds are bounced
away. But some of the particles have
become trapped!
3
The trapped particles move to the
Earth’s poles. Some of the particles
move to the North Pole. The North Pole
is magnetic and it pulls in the trapped
particles. The particles start to get close
to the North Pole!
4
The charged particles begin to bump
into oxygen and nitrogen in the air.
Colorful lights start to glow over the night
sky. The lights in the sky are an aurora!
The lights move in waves. The colorful
lights shimmer and sparkle with beauty!
5
People have named the auroras seen
in the north as “northern lights.” These
lights never look the same. They can
be different shapes, sizes and colors.
Northern lights can be big or small. They
can be green, red, blue or a mix of two!
6
The lights are seen best at night when
the sky is clear. The lights may last for a
few minutes or a few hours!
