Ron Arden received his musical training at Butler University in Indianapolis, a Masters from the University of Nebraska in viola performance, and did doctoral work at the University of Houston in voice and viola. A “renaissance man” in the truest sense, for 25 years he has performed, taught, and conducted as an artist of the first rank. Orchestral viola experience includes the Omaha Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, Lincoln Symphony, Houston Bach Society, Houston Grand Opera, The Florida Philharmonic, and Symphony of the Americas in Ft. Lauderdale. Vocal/acting experience includes performance as a free-lance artist in Omaha, with Houston Grand Opera, and Class Act Broadway touring company of South Florida. Ron has taught private voice and viola in each of the cities mentioned above as well as being a featured teacher for Elderhostel Continuing Education programs. Presently he is on the faculty at Lake Forest College and keeps an active studio in his home. He and his wife have toured the country for over 20 years and have three recordings from their performing duo A Cross Between. They have two children, Nikolas and Ivan and reside in Zion, Illinois where Ron spent 5 years as Minister of Music, Worship, and Drama at a large non-denominational church. Besides orchestrating worship there, he was artistic director of the Zion Passion Play, Dean of the Zion Conservatory, and Music Director of the Zion Chamber Orchestra – twice awarded by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. In 2003 Ron founded and became music director of FullScore Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble of professional singers and instrumentalists on Chicago’s north shore. FullScore Chamber Orchestra was the first orchestra invited to the newly renovated Genesee Theater in Waukegan and plays there regularly for national artists. Ron is highly sought as a musical director and works as a consultant on the arts in worship. Enjoying a wide diversity of performing/conducting experience, Ron’s reputation for instilling excellence and artistry into musicians is his deepest passion. From classical to Broadway, barbershop to gospel, Ron comfortably communicates the beauty of great music.

Program Notes American Salute Morton Gould (10 December 1913 – 21 February 1996)

Morton Gould was recognized as a child prodigy, publishing his first composition at age 6. Despite the evidence of greatness in Gould, he was still a man of his era, making extra income for his family during the Great Depression by playing vaudeville. Eventually, times changed. Gould became the house pianist at Radio City Music Hall. He moved onto gigs in radio and television, finding larger audiences. Throughout his adult life Gould conducted for the major orchestras around the world and groups all over the United States commissioned his music.

Gould composed American Salute in 1942, with the nation at war. Evidently, Gould began the composition at dinnertime and had it finished just in time for a 9:00 am broadcast the following morning.

The work is a short set of variations on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” The original tune dates back to the 16th century. Patrick Gilmore composed the familiar American song during the Civil War. The piece demonstrates Gould’s masterful orchestration as well as a complete ease in a jazz idiom.

Rhapsody In Blue George Gershwin (26 September 1898 – 11 July 1937)

George Gershwin’s rise was the quintessential American success story. Born to Russian-Jewish immigrants in Brooklyn, Gershwin’s talent was relatively late in revealing itself. His family acquired a piano when Gershwin was 12 and he began to earn his way as a player a few years later. Rhapsody in Blue was his breakthrough work and fame and fortune soon followed.

Early in 1937, Gershwin began to have blinding headaches and olfactory hallucinations. His health continued to deteriorate and he passed away in July at the age of 38.

If there are certain watershed moments in the history of music, then the opening clarinet glissando of Rhapsody in Blue on February 12, 1924 marks the “legitimization” of Jazz. In the early part of the Roaring 20’s, Jazz was finding its legs; but mostly in the clubs and on Broadway. The Paul Whiteman Orchestra had performed some fairly sanitized jazz inflected works in the concert halls, occasionally collaborating with Gershwin. In January of 1924, Whiteman announced a concert entitled “An Experiment in Modern Music.” Gershwin composed the work for two pianos and Ferde Grofe arranged it for piano and orchestra. The Syncopated Clock Forgotten Dreams The Waltzing Cat Leroy Anderson (29 June 1908 – 18 May 1975)

Leroy Anderson received his first piano lessons from his church organist mother. He studied music theory, counterpoint, harmony, composition and double bass at Harvard. He stayed at Harvard to study German and Scandinavian languages.

During World War Two Anderson joined the Army where he put his knowledge of Icelandic to the service of the country. He was elevated to Chief of the Scandinavian Desk of Military Intelligence. It was during that period that he composed “The Syncopated Clock,” which is one of his best-known pieces.

Program Notes (continued) Salute to Big Bands Calvin Custer (1939-1998)

Calvin Custer attended Carnegie Mellon University and Syracuse University. For the majority of his musical career he was associated with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He played keyboards, horn and string bass. He conducted and served as the staff arranger. Custer also played guitar and keyboards with rock and percussion ensembles

The salute to Big Bands medley contains snippets of several well-known American classics. Listen closely for sounds of:

• “April in Paris”, the Count Basie tune • “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You”, popularized by Tommy Dorsey • “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, the song most closely associated with Glenn Miller • “Serenade in Blue”, another Glenn Miller standard • “Sing, Sing, Sing”, written by Louis Prima, but best known from Benny Goodman’s

rendition.
