Renewal
March 15 – 31, 2014
Sunset Tranquility Karen Woodin
The Niche Gallery continues a promising season with Renewal, an exhibit of work by renowned artist Karen Woodin and her emerging "budding” art students: Jackie Corso, Kathy Gillis, June Lacijan, Ann Madeo, Jennifer Paley and Leslie Sheldon. An opening reception for this beautiful show will take place Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 1 to 5 pm. The two week Renewal exhibit will celebrate spring with floral blossoms and scenic landscapes of the Adirondacks. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Capital District Community Gardens.
A noteworthy segment of the exhibit is the four interpretations of Lake George created by Karen and three of her students. “They all worked from the same photograph taken by Ric Easton and each captured something different. The variety is so interesting” said artist Kathe Kokolias who helped orchestrate the show. “I have always admired Karen’s work and am thrilled to see her pass her knowledge and enthusiasm on to her students!” According to Karen, “the Lake George painting is a culminating piece and reminiscent of previous paintings that we have done in class. It is very vibrant and organic in quality with tree and rock formations along the lakeside.” Karen Woodin’s classes are held at the artist’s residence in Waterford. Group classes often focus on traditional landscapes that emphasize creating naturalistic compositions with scenic views of the Adirondack region.
The Niche Gallery launched an exciting 2014 season with a bewitching exhibit. Enchanted, a multimedia assemblage featuring the work of 10 very talented artists was on display from February 14 through March 15, 2014. That beguiling show presented works in oil, pastel, watercolor, encaustics, collage, photography, solar plate etching and mixed media and helped the Niche raise much needed funds for Make-a-Wish North Eastern New York.
Renewal, like each and every exhibit at the Niche, benefits a charitable cause. A portion of sales made throughout Renewal will go to Capital District Community Gardens (http:// www.cdcg.org.) Capital District Community Garden started in 1975 as a community service project of Garden Way, the former manufacturer of Troy-Bilt Lawn and Garden Equipment. Today CDCG works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York’s Capital Region by organizing community gardens, providing healthy food access, offering nutritional and horticultural education for all ages and coordinating urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga Counties. Help us help them keep going – and growing!
The Niche Gallery is the home of Greentree Fiber Arts, whimsical fabric creations by Susan Rivers, and the Art Allies Foundation, an Adirondack Trust Community Fund. Susan Rivers’ unique style of skillfully blending the age old art of quilting with other media has earned her the distinction of being a “leader in contemporary folk art.” The Niche Gallery also proudly features work in various media by very talented artists. Exhibits rotate frequently and each show benefits a different not for profit organization. Complementing the revolving exhibits is work permanently on display by accomplished artists Kathe Kokolias, Kathy Liguori, Gwen Stander, Bradford Smith and Marilyn Ramsdale. In addition to the art exhibits, The Niche also offers jewelry for men and women, books by local authors and unique fine art gifts.
The Niche Gallery is open by appointment and Tuesday – Friday, 11 -3 pm during March and April. For more information visit The Niche Gallery on Facebook or call 518-330-5176.
