THERE IS A BURGLARY EVERY 7 MINUTES SOMEWHERE IN THE COUNTRY.

Just as world peace and security is important for all, security

for our land, homes, farms, schools and our business premises

is important for the wellbeing of us all, here in New Zealand -

whether they be children, millennials, couples or elderly.

New Zealand is a safe place and according to the Global Peace

Index (2018 edition) we are the second safest country in the

world to live in. However we do have a high rate of burglaries

– Police statistics from Ministry of Justice shows burglaries

occur for each household, 14 per 100 in 2020. Residential

burglaries stand at 75% and commercial burglaries stand at

25% of the total number. We know also that a significant

number of burglaries are not reported for various reasons,

possibly around 25%.

Identity theft is also increasingly at a significant rate.

Despite an increase in modern detection methods such as DNA

and the use of alarms and cameras, the statistics show that we

can all do a lot more to protect our property.

Most property crimes are committed without planning, that is,

they are opportunistic.

There are some burglaries that are planned where the keys

to the premises are obtained and duplicated at a local key

cutting store allowing free access to the house or commercial

premises. Police statistics indicate that at some burglaries there

are no signs of forced entry, leading to the conclusion that a

key had been used to enter the premises.

Burglaries are now being given priority by the New Zealand

Police.

9 Fit a door viewer and strong security chain.10 Fit a lock with a deadbolt to the door and all the other

external doors including connecting door between garage and house.

11 Fit hinge-bolts to french doors, top and bottom. Fit sliding door deadlock to sliding patio doors. Fit patio bolts to deck or patio doors.

12 Keep shrubs trimmed so that they do not cloak any intruders activities. Display warning signs.

A secure house should also be a safe house. For your safety, the New Zealand Fire Service recommends that every home be fitted with at least one smoke alarm and that every bedroom/living room have two ready means of exit in the case of an emergency.

6 Fit locks to any window that opens in your garden shed and a padlock and strong hasp to the door.

7 Back doors are often fitted with a basic lockset. Upgrade to a quality lockset and deadbolt. The back of your house is often more vulnerable than the front.

8 Secure gates with padlock and padbolt. Lock ladders and tools in shed or garage.

Rural properties are also subject to burglary of homes, sheds

and live-stock and many of the previous mentioned measures

apply.

Neighbours are so important in rural areas and generally are

concerned with ensuring crime does not prosper. Reporting

suspicious movements around neighbouring properties is

important and alerting the police and other neighbours can

prevent and deter crime.

Just as in urban areas, use of cell phones allow photographing

and recording serial numbers of household possessions, farm

equipment and of course stock is so critical.

Police say they can and will respond to rural crime and

encourage reporting of suspicious activity and just as they

are committed to investigating urban crime. The Police are

interested in receiving all information as they can more readily

establish patterns of potential crime.

Most locks for the urban residential, rural market and some

commercial premises use a common keyway which is easily

duplicated at hardware and key cutter stores throughout

New Zealand. This means if your keys fall into the hands of an

opportunist and they locate your address then an unforced

entry can be made with unfortunate results. The solution is

not to hand over your keys to anyone you do not trust as they

could duplicate the keys to your premises quite easily.

Another solution is to have a restricted keying system installed

that is protected by IP (intellectual property in the form of

patents or design registrations) and can only be duplicated by

the locksmith who supplied the system and must be authorised

by the owner/occupier of the premises.

Generally found in residential properties in urban and rural
