The newsletter of the Ottawa Power and Sail Squadron Spring 2018 Page: 1 From the Commander’s Helm Station: T he Spring or Vernal Equinox (equal day and night), when the sun crosses the celestial equator, is upon us. The Vernal Equinox is in Pisces now; it used to be in Aries (a little tidbit from the Offshore Navigation 2 course). This means the boats will be coming out of storage in the ensuing weeks and work will begin in earnest in preparing for the upcoming season. The National AGM and Conference will be held in Ottawa this year and it will be an anniversary of 80 years of service by CPS-ECP to the recreational boating community. The Ottawa squadron has 66 years of service to the local boating community. The planning of this event is headed by the Commander of the Rideau District, Guy Ladouceur. This committee has been working diligently to provide a top rate event for the CPS-ECP membership. The work of this committee is ongoing and won’t be finished until well after the event. We are looking for volunteers for this event, so please consider this opportunity. Why not volunteer for a day and be part of the event and see what goes on at a National Conference. You will meet members from all across Canada and you can learn what it is like to boat in their part of the country. If you are interested, you can get in touch with Guy. You will find his contact information on our website at cps-ottawa.com. For more detail see the volunteer article in this newsletter. The health of the squadron is in reasonably decent shape. The squadron has over 400 members which is healthy but will be impossible to maintain unless we can recruit new and younger members. Especially ones who are willing to volunteer and take on leadership roles. Some sources for achieving this are our courses, RVCC checks and getting boaters out to our social events. As a membership we can do our bit by word of mouth, by talking with your boating neighbours and encouraging those who are not members to join and enjoy the benefits of being a member. The lifeblood of our existence is providing quality boating safety courses and maintaining a healthy membership. So as a way of resurrecting our main boating safety courses we have developed a new strategy for the mode of delivery of our courses. We are now delivering these courses online. We still offer the classroom option, but we are building up a library of videos that will provide the content for the courses. Students will spend a week reviewing the required videos from home then once a week they will meet online with their instructors and proctors to discuss the material and clear up any questions they might have. Students will be quizzed on the content so that instructors can get feedback on the progress of the students and on the achievement of learning outcomes. The feedback we have on the presentation and delivery mode of these courses has been very positive. We have enrolled 22 students since September and expect another 12 to 15 (Continued on page 3)

Everyone enjoyed a 30-minuteslide show of photographsdepicting the history of ourSquadron as well as the Britannia-Rideau Squadron The creator ofthis masterpiece was Rolly Nantelwho spent a lot of times organizingthe photographs

In my opinion our presence at the Show was asuccess It gave us a terrific opportunity to promoteour ONLINE Courses a chance to recruit newstudents for our up-coming in class courses andrecruiting new members plus enticing former

The classic dark poem SamuelTaylor Coleridgersquos The Rime ofthe Ancient Mariner was basedupon maritime superstition In thepoem the Mariner recalls a voyagein which a gigantic storm rose andpushed the ship southward to afrigid land of mist and snow wherethe ship was hemmed in a maze ofice Suddenly the sailorsencountered an albatross flyingaround the ship The ice crackedsplit and a favorable windpropelled the ship out of the frigidregions and into a dense patch offog The albatross followed behindthe vessel and it as considered asymbol of good luck to the sailorsThe Mariner shortly confesses thathe shot and killed the albatrosswith his crossbow

At first the sailors were furiouswith the Mariner for having killedthe bird that appeared to make thebreezes blow In time the windpushed the ship into a quiet seaThe men had no water to drink andhorrible hallucinations occurredThe sailors blamed the Mariner fortheir predicament and hung thedead albatross around his neck likea cross This late eighteenthcentury poem reflected thesuperstition that albatrossescontained the soul of dead sailorsand slaying such a bird asconsidered bad luck for mariners

2018 RecreationalVessel CourtesyCheck (RVCC)So you think you are ready for theboating season Are you sure

Many boaters think that becausethey have their Pleasure CraftOperator Card that they know allthe rules and are good to goHowever somehow the authoritiesmanage to levy a good number offines each year on boaters who arenot in compliance with safetyrequirements More importantlyover 100 people die each year inboating related accidents many ofwhich are avoidable

So how sure are you How longago did you study the requirementsand pass the test Have the ruleschanged since then Are you sureyou have all the appropriatemandatory equipment on board Isit all in good working order or arethe batteries in the flashlight deadThose life jackets are they theright size for all on board

There is always a chance that youmay have to answer all thosequestions and more If it is theauthorities that are posing thequestions and you canrsquot come upwith the right answers then youmight just be in for fines of $200or more

On the other hand a CanadianPower and Sail Squadron membertrained as a Safety Specialist cango over your boat and equipmentwith you to ensure all is in orderThere are no penalties involvedthe boaterrsquos personal informationis not recorded or given toTransport Canada and this serviceis offered free of charge this is anopportunity to learn about boatingsafety before heading out on thewater If you donrsquot have all theappropriate mandatory equipmentyou will receive a list of what youneed If you do have theappropriate mandatory equipmentyou will be issued a decal todisplay on your boat showingmarine authorities that you havebeen found in compliance withsafety requirements

From the Desk of theEducation Officer

Irsquom going to tell a small storyIt is true and based on personalexperience

Back in the day when houseboatswere popular my wife and Idecided we were going to take ouryoung kids and have a houseboatvacation on the RideauReservations were made vacationschedules were set and plans weremade for the big day when wewould take possession

The big day arrived The kids hadtheir fishing rods water toys andall paraphernalia associated withsummer vacation Provisions werepurchased and off we went to findour home on the water for the nextweek

We arrived at the marina and afterchecking in located our houseboatA 40ft monster with a 90 hp motorIntimidating to say the leastPossessions stored it was time totake the mandatory pre-departurecheck out This consisted of alesson on how to operate thevarious systems aboard such asengine starting what the lever toright of the steering wheel was foretc

The final checkout item was apractice cruise The instructor tookus out turned the helm over to meand said ldquotake her alongside thatgreen marker over thererdquo

I proceeded to maneuver thisbehemoth alongside the markerThe instructor said ldquowell donenow take me back to the dock andyou can proceed on your wayrdquo

After careful maneuvering wemanaged to pull alongside the

dock the instructor jumped off andwe were on our way to anadventure

The first few days and nights wereuneventful Kids were having ablast fishing swimming Momand Dad relaxing

We managed to get thru theNarrows with no problem thanksto the helpful lock staff A fewdays later we decided to anchornear an island ldquoNo problemrdquo Ithought a piece of cake wersquoll justthrow the anchor over and seewhat happens That night it wasvery peaceful and calm I turnedon a light and noticed that it wasvery dim

Further investigation also showedthat our refrigerator had stoppedworking as well Well wersquoll juststart the engine and charge thebattery Click click click was theonly sound we heard No sensetrying to do anything about it inthe middle of the night so back tobed

Next morning we tried to start theengine again Nothing Fortunatelyfor us a couple of fishermanhappened by and they were kindenough to give us a boost to get theengine going We were told not toshut it off as it might not startagain due to the battery issues

We decided to head back towardNewboro make a phone call andhave the marina staff change thebattery

Time to haul the anchor pull pullpull some more The d---n thingwould not come up enough tobring it aboard Jump in the waterand lo and behold we have a cablewrapped around the flukes Lots offour letter words and an hour of

pulling and heaving and a lostboat hook we finally succeeded inreleasing the anchor

We proceeded back to Newborogot a new battery told we shouldhave switched to the house batterygot the fridge restarted andenjoyed the remainder of the week

When we got back to the marinathe person who checked us inasked us if we had seen the cableon the chart prior to anchoring Isaid to her ldquowhat chart nobodytold me about any charts when Itook this thing outrdquo

ldquoOhrdquo she said ldquotheyrsquore right hereby the helmrdquo

After this adventure and we didhave a good time we did it againthe following year No furthermisadventures other than one ofthe kids falling off the swimladder Fishing rod in hand hecleared the rail and landed in thecanal Boaters coming into thecanal saw this and threw theirengines into reverse to renderassistance but thatrsquos another story

The moral of this story take aboating course Learn what thatGreen Marker means Learn howto read a chart that wavy line doesmean something

Take a Boat and EngineMaintenance course It will helpyou with all the various systemsaboard where to locate the batteryswitches and charging systems

Have a Safe Boating Season

The Indian Ocean is teeming withsea monsters in Caspar Vopelrsquos1558 map of the world A giantswordfish-like creature looks to be

on a collision course with a shipwhile a walrus with frighteninglylarge tusks emerges from thewater and a king carrying a flagrides the waves on a hog-facedbeast

Vopel a German cartographer leftbehind no explanation of why headded these things to his map buthe may have been motivated bywhat art historians call horrorvacui the artistrsquos fear of leavingunadorned spaces on their work

Chet Van Duzer a historian ofcartography has found dozens ofmaps on which cartographersappear to have filled the emptyspaces on their maps with non-existent mountains monsterscities and other gratuitousillustrations One reasonmapmakers may have done this isto hide their ignorance says VanDuzer Mapmakers may have alsobeen motivated by the market fortheir work Aristocrats and otherwealthy patrons who commis-sioned the most expensive mapswould have expected lavishdecoration Unfortunately the realmotivations of these mapmakersare mostly lost to time

Why take a chance Ask anySquadron Executive CommitteeMember about scheduling anRVCC for your boat Make surethat you are prepared
